Chapter 11: Alive

                           Sokka's POV

"NO!!" Sokka's heart plunged into his stomach as he felt Y/N's fingers slip from his grasp. Her eyes widened in fear, and then she hit the water, disappearing in a cloud of bubbles.

"Aang! Turn around!" Sokka screamed, desperate to not lose track of where his sister had fallen, but he couldn't even see the bubbles anymore. "Katara, waterbend her out or something!"

"I can't see her! Where did she land?" Katara yelled over the wind, and Aang began turning Appa around. They circled over the water, searching.

"Why hasn't she surfaced yet? Y/N! Y/N!" Katara called to out towards the water, and Sokka shook his head.

"She might not be conscious. Her head hit the water first." Aang yelled, searching and steering Appa at the same time.

"I'm going down after her!" Katara announced in a panicked voice, standing up, but Sokka pulled her back down as a large fireball roared over their heads.

He looked up to see the soldiers firing blasts of flame at them, not hitting anything, but Aang could only concentrate on steering now, and Appa's flying was a lot more jerky, making it hard to see below the water's surface.

"If we stay here much longer, we'll all be killed!" Aang yelled over the roaring flames. "We have to leave!"

"Not without Y/N, we aren't!" Sokka yelled back, ducking another fireball.

"Even if she's unconscious, the small bag she has on her will retain some air. She'll be floating closer to the surface, and is probably already drifting downstream. We need to lose them now so we can look for her!" Aang explained, turning Appa downriver and flying up into the clouds, avoiding a bunch of weighted nets flying their way.

          "NO!!" Katara screamed.

                             Zuko's POV

He had been so close. Again.

The Avatar and his friends fell over the waterfall, only to be scooped up by his flying bison.

Zuko walked up to the edge, fists clenched, but stared in confusion as the bison turned around, swooping back down towards the pool below. They were all yelling unintelligibly, seeming to be searching the water for something.

"What's going on? Did they lose something?" He muttered to himself, then  looked closer at the figures sitting in the saddle. One was missing...

Y/N. She fell into the water. Zuko realized, looking at the waterfall's base. Could she have actually survived that fall? Hitting the water from that height would be like hitting solid ground.

"Quick." Zuko called to his remaining soldiers. "We still have a chance to catch them. Bring that bison down!" Pirates and soldiers rushed down the hillside to the left, yelling and pushing at each other to get down to the pool below.

"She's going to drown if you don't do something." Iroh voiced Zuko's thoughts, pointing down at the pool. When he followed his uncle's gaze, he could see a small form far below, right under the surface of the water, still and unmoving.

"I don't care." Zuko dismissively waved his hand in Y/N' s direction. Iroh watched him curiously as Zuko began to head down the hillside after his soldiers, barking orders and yelling in frustration.

He tried to focus on the fact that the bison wasn't any closer to being brought down, and that the pirates were trying to sabotage them, but the form under the surface of the water always caught his eye again and again.

Each second that passed made him feel even more tense and anxious. The pirates began to throw their weighted nets at the Avatar, and the bison flew away, screams of protest coming from the saddle as they disappeared into the clouds.

Everyone paused for a moment, looking up at the clouds, then a soldier hesitantly approached Zuko.

"Sir, do you want us to follow them?" He asked, flinching as Zuko suddenly moved. Not towards the soldier as he had expected, but over the small overhang into the pool.

The water was extremely cold, but not near as bad as the South Pole. Zuko surfaced moments after jumping in, swimming towards Y/N and wrapping his arms around her waist, slowly dragging her back to shore.

He wasn't the best swimmer, so this took more effort than he had anticipated, but he managed, laying her on the beach while panting heavily.

Zuko didn't look down at her as he stood, Iroh hurrying over to check her pulse. He didn't want to know if it was too late. He wrung out his hair as his soldiers stared at them, the pirate ship long gone from chasing futilely after the flying bison.

"She has no pulse." Iroh said, and Zuko's heart dropped, and unknowingly, his shoulders slumped. "Does anyone here have the medical training to help?"

"All medics are back on the main ship, sir." A soldier piped up nervously. "But I do have some training, General."

"Come forward then, quickly." Iroh prompted, but Zuko held up a hand.

"No need. I'll do it." He stated, turning around and grabbing Y/N's wrist, pressing firmly for a pulse. Confirming there was none, he gently tilted her head to the side, letting some water trickle out of her lungs through her mouth.

What am I doing?? He hesitated for a moment, tipping her chin up. Then he looked up to see the expectant and confused faces of his uncle and soldiers, and gave them a harsh scowl, bending down and pinching Y/N's nose, firmly locking his lips onto hers and delivering a strong rescue breath. Her lips were cold, which was disheartening, but he did it again before starting chest compressions.

The only sound was the waterfall, and Zuko felt extremely self conscious with everyone just sitting there and waiting as he lowered his ear to Y/N's mouth, trying to detect any sign of breathing. There was none, so he repeated the process again, still getting nothing.

Maybe it's better that's she's gone. There was a sinking feeling in his chest as he delivered another rescue breath. He studied her for a moment, then tried another one. Her lips moved under his, and he sat back, almost falling over in surprise.

She didn't seem to be moving, so he listened for her breathing, unsure if he had imagined it or not, but was met moments later with water in his ear and all over his face.

Y/N coughed violently, curling over on one side as Zuko yelled in disgust, plunging his face in the pool to wash off the water, and washing out his mouth from the little bit that had gotten in, sputtering and gagging.

Gross... Zuko spat out river water as he surfaced again, wiping the water from his eyes. He glanced behind him to see Iroh had ordered a soldier to pick Y/N up, as she was unconscious again, but clearly breathing fine.

          She's alive...
