Leo POV.
"Leo would you shut up?" Annabeth hissed elbowing him in his gut. Leo grunted and massaged the area that was sure to be bruised later. It was about 11pm and all the Gryffindors had gone to their rooms to get ready for the big day tomorrow, the first day of wizarding school. Leo and Nico were sharing a room with Harry, Ron, and the other guys they had met named Neville, Seamus, and Dean. Annabeth was sharing with Hermione which she was quite happy about.
After the wizards had told them about the big war, which wasn't all that big to the demigods, Annabeth and Hermione started talking so fast paced and super smart, Leo was sure it wasn't even English anymore. Nico had remained unresponsive the entire dinner with his occasional movement of his fork to push around some food. Leo had had a great time chatting with Harry and Ron and he learned all about the game Quidditch that was played on broom sticks that flew the air. Leo once again was secretly creating plans to do that without magic.
"Where is Nico?" Annabeth fumed. "We only have oh so much time to look before Filch will check the library! And McGonagall won't let us slack off on our work otherwise it'll flaw our cover-!"
"Geez Annie, I'm right here!" Nico said appearing at the bottom of the stair case that led up to the bed rooms. He was wearing his usual attire, a black shirt, black jeans that made him look a lot like the ghosts in the castle, not that Leo would ever tell him that for fear of get sliced in half by Nico deadly sword, which was in its sleeve on his side.
Annabeth was wearing her orange camp shirt and her dagger on her hip. her hands fiddled with her necklace of camp beads and Leo noticed a silver glint of an object, that he was sure had never been there before. It was a ring the shape of a owl with green-blue gems for eyes. Hmmmm...
Leo was wearing his camp shirt with his jeans and toolbelt, his fingers already messing with a bunch of pipe cleaners and a rubber band
"Oh good. And don't call me Annie. Now we only have three hours and that will put us at 2 to get back here-"
"2 In the morning!" Leo whisper yelled. "Three ADHD demigods in a library for three hours, Annabeth!"
"Yep! isn't it great!?" Annabeth squealed with excitement. Nico and Leo shared a look. Suddenly being trapped in a school for magical people wasn't the worst thing on their lists.
Suddenly Nico shivered. Leo looked at him.
"Dude, you ok?"
Nico looked around. "Yeah, I don't know why, but I feel like someone is watching us in the shadows."
"Some wizard magic trick?"
"Maybe."
"Oh come on!" Annabeth said. "You're just being paranoid. " She started towards the door and opened it slowly. Leo followed, and Nico took one last look around, still not satisfied, and the of them crept in to the silent hall. The weird thing, was Leo felt as if something, or someone was watching him. He shook it off.
Leo continued to nervously play with his pipe cleaners. He shaped them into a cat, and then into racecar, and then into a steamboat. He knew he could create mini engines to go with them to make them work.
"Why can't we just Iris Message, them?" Leo asked.
"I told you, wizard magic interferes with the Mist." Annabeth said as the walked silently down the hall. "Either that or Iris is just not putting me through."
"It's probably the second one..." Nico muttered earning a glare from Annabeth. "What? Both you and Percy have a unique habit of pissing of some very powerful people. Like Remember Kronos? Zeus? Gaia? What about Hera?"
"All of those were Percy and his big mouth." Annabeth said trying- and failing- to keep a smile off her face.
"So why can't Professor McGonagall just lift the stupid spell protection thing around the school?" Leo said. "You do know where we are going right?"
"Of course!" Annabeth said leading the way up a stair case. Leo watch above as other parts moved around. It seemed like the entire castle never rested. "And the spell was made by a very powerful wand. No other wand can lift it. McGonagall told me that the old owner of the wand snapped it in two and threw it off different sides of a bridge."
"Wonder-FUL!" Leo's sarcastic remark switched to a yelp, as his foot fell through a stair.
Nico and Annabeth looked at him for a full two minutes as he tried unsuccessfully to get his leg out, before busting into laughter. "What the Hades!" Leo hissed, his face red with embarrassment. "Styx! Someone help me!"
Nico leaned backwards laughing so hard it came out silent. His pale face was red as he leaned against the railing. Leo wished it would just give out so Nico would fall. Annabeth reached her arm out and pulled Leo up. Leo sighed with relief. They had no idea how weird that felt.
Suddenly they all froze as a door banged two stories down.
"PEEVES!" A gangly old voice shrieked. The the demigods shared a look and they all ran silently up the last set of stairs and ducked to the left disappearing behind some columns.
They listened acutely for the sound of footsteps coming their way. Annabeth held her breath. Leo strained to hear anything. Nico glared at the opening daring something to walk through.
They were totally unprepared when a cat posted up the stairs.
"Is that... a cat?" Leo murdered into Nico's ear.
"That's Filch's cat!" Annabeth whispered. From her tone Leo deduced that was a bad thing. "We've got to make sure it doesn't see us! Hermione told me it hisses and gets Filch's attention and then we're doomed! She told me a spell-"
"Forget the spell!" Nico said. Leo watched as Nico grew slightly cold and a pile of smile bones appeared near the cat away from them. The bones animated themselves into a small mouse. The cat sniffed it and the mouse took off back the way they had came. Luckily the cat jumped after it screeching and hissing and it lept down the stairs.
Nico sighed with relief. Annabeth let out her breath.
"PEEVES!" The voice screamed again fainter this time as the man ran after his snarling cat.
"Come on, let's go."
"Wait what's a peeves?" Leo asked.
"Not what, who." Nico said. "He's a poltergeist that probably won't even listen to me." Leo couldn't tell if Nico was mad or irritated with the prospect of a pranking ghost, but he decided not to ask.
Finally they made it to the library. Annabeth put a finger to her lips, signaling silence and lightly turned the door knob and push the doors open.
The smell of musty old books was overwhelming. Leo's jaw dropped, Nico groaned at the ceiling muttering a "why do they hate us?" while Annabeth's eyes lit up like she walked into a room filled with floor-to-ceiling book shelves--
oh ,Wait, she did.
If Leo had had any hope before walking into the library, it was gone now. There was no chance of them finding the one book that had the answer in this gigantic room. Not to mention, once again, that feeling Nico had had earlier about Hazel and Jason. Were they dead? Was that possible? What had happened after they fell? And what about Nico and that Hermione girl? Something very weird was going on there.
"Gah!" Leo exclaimed. "We are never getting out of here!"
"Relax, Repair Boy!" Annabeth said darting through the rows of shelves, picking books and collecting them in her arms. "This will only take a couple days! I wonder if I could borrow some for camp. Maybe they have extra..." Annabeth trailed off disappearing past a statue of some famous wizard. Nico and Leo slumped into some chairs under a table.
"This is going to be a long night." Nico groaned. Leo nodded, staring at a spot on the wall. Was it his imagination or did it just waver slightly? No it was probably just a trick of the light.
"Here let's start with these!" Annabeth reappeared supporting a stack of books that was taller than her.
"Start?!" Nico laid his head on the table. "Let's just forget it. I like these wizards anyway." Annabeth set the stack on the table and also Nico on the back of his head. It was pretty obvious Nico hated being here.
Leo leaned over and took the thinnest book from the stack. "I guess we can add "extreme book reader" to my list of titles." he joked opening to the first page.
He didn't get through the table of contents before his head slipped forward and Leo fell asleep.
He was back on Calypso's island. He was standing there a look of both agony and disbelief etched on his face.
"Leo!" Jason yelled but before he could move Calypso waved her hand and he went flying like a gust of wind had caught him off guard. Jason slammed head first into a nearby tree. Leo fell to the sandy ground trying to grip the handle of the knife Calypso had plunged into his stomach. It was slick with blood. His Blood. Calypso gave him a look of something like...pity?
"Why?" He yelled at her. She flashed him a smile, a cruel one that didn't fit her personality. Pain shocked through his body.
"The Gods cursed me because my dad was a bad guy." She said slowly like she was talking to a two-year-old. "They thought I was a bad guy too. I wasn't. But now this is what they've made me. And you Leonardo Valdez, were the first part in my plan for Revenge!"
She twirled around and drifted towards the Argo III, that was still open waiting to take her back to New York.
"So it was all a lie, then?!" Leo yelled his voice cracking with betrayal and pain. He was on fire, everything was red. His betrayal became anger. She'd played him?! This entire time-! "Your love for me? It was all just a lie?!"
Calypso's gaze faltered. For a second she seemed to be at war with herself. "Bye, Leo." She said finally. She turned and didn't look back. She walked on board and Leo's design took off. Leaving Leo screaming curses at her. After all he'd been through, he was going to die because the girl he thought had loved him as much as he loved her stabbed him with a knife.
Hades will have her soul. Leo promised himself. It didn't matter if she was a goddess or not. He'd get back at her. Blood seeped from the knife wound. Leo's vision became hazy and he dropped into darkness.
"Leo!"
"Leo wake up!"
"Leo you're burning a book!"
Leo coughed as something cold and wet fell on top of him. He was soaked in freezing water. Shivering he looked at Annabeth who was proudly pointing her end at him and Nico who was gazing the remains of the charred book on table.
"The Augamenti charm!"Annabeth said delightfully.
Nico looked up from the ashes. "I bet you five darchamas that was the book that had the answer in it."
"Shut up." Leo moaned. Knowing their luck, it probably was.
"Let's just call it a night." Annabeth yawned. She flicked her wand and the books floated back to the place they came from. "That is so cool! I wish we had that at camp!"
Nico yawned and lead the way to the door. Leo felt as if someone was watching him, again. He gave the room one last go over pay special attention to that spot that he thought had moved earlier. Then he turned and left running to catch up with the other two.
It he had stuck around an extra three seconds he would have noticed the spot waver again and come out the shadows as Harry Potter pulled off his invisibility cloak.
