Speechless and Skype Calls

My mind went blank. Never would I have suspected this whatsoever. As Gavin sat on his knee, the ring in its little black box, I was frozen in my spot, at a loss for words. I was speechless.

I wanted this, for a while to be honest, but now that it's happening here, while I'm doing what I've always wanted to do, I was scared. If I said yes, I would have to drop my class and go back to Texas and forget about Oxford, but if I say no, then I would lose the person I loved.

When I looked into Gavin's green eyes, I could see the nervous expression clouding them and his smile was starting to shake. I haven't spoken yet, still tense from what just happened. I loved this boy, this wonderful person right here...so, why was it so hard to just say the one thing that would end this awkward stage?

"I-I..." I swallowed the lump in my throat. Gavin's smile was starting to lose hope and I hated to see that. "Gavin..."

"Yes?" He moved off of his knee to stand back up, his eyes turning to dread, as if waiting for me to crush his dreams. He bit his lip while he waited for me to speak.

"I love you," I said and he gave me a half smile, his fingers twitching on the box he held. The ring was definitely beautiful, breath taking and I was scared to even ponder how much it cost. "This was so unexpected, I never would have...It was unexpected." I repeated myself, closing eyes and taking a deep breath. "You caught me off guard."

"It's a no, isn't it?" Gavin's voice shook a little and I could feel the tears starting to build up from how sad he sounded. "I knew I should have...I should have waited o-or kept it to myself. I'm sorry for putting you on the spot-" I cut him off with a soft kiss on the lips, cupping his face and gently stroking his cheeks, feeling the stubble that was beginning to cover his face. I let the tears that threatened my eyes to spill down my cheeks and when I pulled away, I let a small smile spread on my face.

"It's alright. I just wasn't expecting it," I shook my head and chuckled. Confusion danced in his green iris', having me smile even bigger. "I've been waiting for you to do this."

"W-what?" Gavin said shakily. His hands had a slight tremor.

"Gavin, I love you and I want the same things you want," I placed my lips against his again, tilting my head to the side to deepen the kiss and as I did so, my hand trailed down to take the black box from him, extract the lovely ring from its place, and slide it onto my finger. Once I did, I brought that same hand up to cup his face once more.

"So, yes?" Gavin said against my lips, eyes closed and I had a feeling he was too scared to open them until I answered.

"Yes."

"Oh, my god! It looks so perfect on your hand!" Barbs exclaimed as she held my palm, grinning from ear to ear. When Gavin and I were done with our tiny make-out session in the back, we decided on telling the other two the great news. I knew they already knew about this, I mean they helped with the whole set up! "Why can't my boyfriend step up to the plate already?" She stuck out her bottom lip in a pout, making me giggle and hug her to me.

"You're so cute when you're upset." I told her and she practically squeezed the life out of me.

"Okay, my turn to hug my only daughter." My father said and I smiled as he engulfed me into his arms. I was happy he approved of this, that he supported Gavin and I being together.

Once I unraveled myself from him, I looked back and smiled at my fiancé. That was going to be difficult to get used to. I couldn't believe I was now engaged and not just to anyone, but the most perfect guy for me: my Gavin. The ring felt heavy on my left hand, but it was a good feeling, not one that screamed it to be a burden.

I played with it, twisting it around my finger, making it my new favourite thing to do.

"What time is it?" Gavin asked, his arm moving to wrap around my waist and pull me to him.

"Oh! Late! Definitely late." Barbs said, checking her phone. "The plane leaves at 8 tomorrow." She said. My stomach was churning at that. I didn't have enough time to contemplate or think over what I was going to do. Go back or stay here? I was engaged now, so leaving Gavin was almost out of the question.

"Want to come back with me?" Gavin asked, entwining our fingers, rubbing the back of my hand. I looked to my father, a large grin on his face shining amongst his features and his grey eyes practically beaming with joy.

"Go on, darling." My father said, ruffling my pink curls and making me giggle. Before we left, I gave my daddy a kiss on the cheek, reassuring him that I would return in the morning. To stay or pack up my things, I had no idea. All I knew was that time was ticking and I had make a decision.

_____

"Let's Skype them!" I said, flopping down on Gavin's hotel bed, grabbing his laptop that was lying carelessly at the end of the comforter. I wanted to tell Bree about the news and over the phone wasn't how I wanted to do it. I wanted to see her cute, pixie face react to the news and since I couldn't make up my mind on when to leave, I might as well do it now.

"Now? It's almost midnight." Gavin groaned, laying down next to me.

"Yes, now. Don't you want to see her reaction?" I turned his laptop on and when the screen was lighting up, I clicked in the Skype icon.

"Yeah, when we get back. I'm too tired at the moment." His hand was rubbing my back as he stared up at the ceiling. I tensed a little when he mentioned about us going back. I still hadn't made up my mind. I had a little less than 8 hours to eventually come to terms with what I wanted to do.

When I called Bree on the Skype app, she immediately answered, her lips crooked to the side and the dark eyes she had were narrowed at me.

"Oh, hello." She said and I felt guilty. The whole time I was here I hadn't contacted her at all. I was caught up with my class, Carrie and her brother's band, and my father, so I had completely forgot about calling her up.

"I'm sorry, Bree. I was super busy." I said, biting my lip.

"Yeah. Too busy to contact little ole me," Bree rolled her eyes, but I could hear a smile in her voice. Gavin had moved up to lay on his stomach next to me, grabbing my hand and kissing it. "Oh, look. Your other half is with you."

"Hi, love." Gavin smirked at her, making her shake her head. "Where's Ray?"

"In the shower. We're going out on a date. I was putting my make up on, but I got disrupted." Bree moved her eyes to me, having me flip her off and that made her smile. But once it was there it slowly disappeared with a more shocked expression and she frantically began pointing at the screen. "What's that?!" I furrowed my eyebrows until I realised which hand I had used and I chuckled.

"What do you think?" I wiggled my fingers. Bree let out a shrill shriek, covering her mouth and jumping up and down in her seat, a beautiful smile on her face. From the corner of my eye, I saw Gavin grinning, his green eyes sparkling at her reaction.

"Oh my God! It's beautiful! I can't believe it! Ray!" She turned around, her voice still giving off an ear piercing sound. Ray ran out of the bathroom, a towel covering his bottom half. I giggled as he looked at Bree with concern, but when he realised she wasn't in pain or danger he relaxed, rolling his eyes.

"What the fuck, Bree? You want to give me a heart attack?" Ray sighed and he came over to her. "What did you guys do?"

"They got engaged, that's what!" Bree smiled, her hands clasped and raised to her face, excitement in her eyes. Ray furrowed his brows and when I showed him the ring on my finger, his lips curled into a genuine smile. "It's amazing! I can't believe it." I think Bree was more excited than Barbs...and that's saying something. When we were in our early teens, Bree was always passionate about weddings and getting married. I was surprised because of what her father did, but I was also glad because she hadn't let that ruin her dreams.

"Congrats, guys," Ray smiled. "Looks like we'll have another Achievement Hunter wedding." We all laughed, liking the sound of that.

"Oh, are you coming to Lindsay and Michael's?" Bree asked as Ray went to go get changed. Gavin turned to me as I just shrugged.

"Not sure. I have a very important test for my skill class on that very day." She looked disappointed but she didn't push it. As we continued our talk, she began asking us when we would get married--wow, that's weird to say--and a bunch of wedding related questions, but we just got engaged not even four hours ago!

"Bree?" I asked as she was applying mascara on her eyelashes. Gavin had dosed off and was laying against the pillows behind me, his hand placed against my thigh, like he was afraid I would disappear from him.

"Yes, love?" She places the mascara wand back in it's tube and begins to rub off the excess that had smudged around her eyes.

"Would you like to be--" I bit my lip, getting prepared for her screams. "Would you like to be my Maid of Honour?" Silence took over the Skype app, as Bree sat frozen in her spot, processing what I had just asked.

Soon enough, Bree screamed so loud it woke up Gavin and he actually fell off the bed. I laughed at his sudden reaction and also Bree's, who was jumping up and down, tears actually streaming from her brown eyes.

"Yes! Yes!" She sat back down, her freshly applied mascara was already in ribbons down her cheeks.

"Geez, you act as if I proposed to you." I giggled as she wiped away the black stains.

"In a way, yes," She chuckled. Gavin huffed as he made his way back on the bed, glaring at the screen of his laptop, right at my friend. "Sorry, Gavy." She giggled.

"Yeah yeah." He said turning in his side back on the bed, trying to drift off back on the bed.

"I think he hates me." Bree whispered to me and I smiled and shook my head.

"When you sound like a damn banshee, yes." Gavin mumbled and both of us laughed.

______

"Okay, Janie. I have to go." Bree was changed in a short red dress, her black hair was curled and pinned into a braided side bun that left a few strands to brush against her pale cheeks. In the back, Ray was looping a belt through his trousers, humming to himself as he did so.

"Alright. Have fun you two lovebirds." I said and Bree grinned, blowing me a kiss before shutting off her screen. I sighed and laid back on the bed, smiling to myself in the dark. Gavin was already asleep, his soft snores supporting it. I turned on the lamp that sat beside the bed, the dull light brightening half the room.

I raised my hand in front of my face to study the lovely ring. It's delicate design was beautiful and the diamonds were catching the golden light of the lamp beside me, perfectly. I couldn't believe I was engaged. To Gavin Free of all people! I know some of the girls that watched the Roosterteeth gang would kill to be in my position and I couldn't help but feel glad that I was the one to catch this player's heart.

I turned on my side to look at his face. Before I could stop myself, I was outlining his jaw with my fingertips, lightly stroking his cheek and his lips. He was special to me. I loved him more than I thought I could love someone. That's why it was difficult for me to come up with a decision before we awoke in the morning. I wanted to leave with him, but I would never be able to walk across the campus of Oxford again. I would never enjoy how it feels to be a part of something like that.

I'll just sleep on it.
