Daddy's Consent and The Unexpected

(Gavin's POV)

While Jane was at her skill class for the day, I had decided on visiting her father. I didn't exactly know where he lived, so with Burnie's directions and Barbs' driving, I was on my way.

The last time I saw Mason Downing was when he had his heart condition and laying in the hospital. It broke my heart to see Jane emotional and worried, but I knew she was strong. She was my beautiful, strong Jay.

"Are you nervous?" Barbs asked as she turned a left, passing by a long expanse of green fields.

"Definitely." I sighed out, leaning back and running a hand through my hair. My other hand played with the velvet box that lay in my pocket, taunting me with it's very presence. Today was the day that I would be asking Jane's father for his blessing. It was something I haven't done before and it gave me the worst anxiety. What if he says no? What if he laughs in my face and tells me to leave?

"Well, don't be. You said yourself that he approved you. What's there to be scared of?" Barbara takes a glance at me before turning her eyes back onto the road.

"I don't know. I mean, I haven't done this before! How do guys do this? How was Michael able to?" I was overreacting, right? Maybe if I took deep breaths...

"Actually, I think Michael just did it without getting her father's approval," She chuckled. "But that's Michael. He's too cool for that." As she says that, she turns into a quiet looking neighbourhood with dark red brick houses that lined the street. It was definitely a comforting feeling. There were some parts of Tottenham that made people never look back twice, but this place was perfect. Nothing out of the ordinary. "I think this is it." Barbs pulled up in front of a pale blue house that had a nicely cut lawn and even trimmed hedges.

"I think I'm gonna throw up." I muttered and she placed a hand on my shoulder, rubbing her thumb back and forth soothingly.

"Gavin, just calm down. You'll be fine. Hopefully, he doesn't threaten you with wet bread." She tried to crack a joke and I felt my lips tug into a smile. "Do you want to call Michael? It's almost 7 in the morning, but he should be up." Michael always seemed to calm me down and was able to help unwind me. Even though he cursed me out and punched me during our recordings, he was the best friend anyone could wish to have.

"Yeah." I nodded and soon she had her phone out, dialing his number, leaving it on speaker phone.

"Hello?" His voice spoke through and it sounded like he just woke up from sleeping.

"Hey, Michael," Barbs said. "I have some important news to tell you. It will involve your advice."

"Well, fucking spit it out. I don't have all morning." The both of us laughed at his morning crankiness. Same old Michael.

"Actually, you do. You don't have work today," He quietly tells her to 'Fuck off'. "Okay, well, Gavin and I are in front of Jane's father's house and Gavin is going to be taking a new step. He's going to ask for her father's blessing." Barbara grinned at me and I leaned back, breathing out deeply.

"Oh, shit. Seriously?" That sparked interest in the curly haired boy's voice. He was the most encouraging, next to Barbara, about the whole proposal. He said it would be the best thing I have ever done and he even told me it was the best thing he ever did with Lindsay. "So, why call me? Gav, you okay?" I guess he knew he was on speaker.

"I'm nervous, mate," I said. "Should I just do what you did and propose without asking?" I was really considering that option because my heart was beating so fast I thought it was going to explode.

"No, dude. Trust me. You need to ask because I got a long lecture from, not just Lindsay's father, but also her mother. Fuck, it was terrifying, but thankfully they were happy afterwards." Michael chuckled and I could hear a stuff being opened, making me believe he was making breakfast for himself.

"Why'd you skip out on it?" I asked.

"Because I didn't want to feel the way you are right now. But let me tell you..it's a lot worse if you don't. If you show how mature you are and step up to him, ask him for his daughter's hand, he will definitely have a lot of respect for you. Trust me when I say I wish I could redo it. " Michael's words really sunk in and I started to realise that him not doing the most simple procedure of the engagement had him feeling worse than me. If I didn't do this, I might not hear the end of it.

"Thanks Michael. I owe you." I smiled and Barbs was looking pleased by the advice.

"Fuck yeah, you do. Both of you, bastards. I was having a good dream with some chicks in it. So, either you throw me a party with the same amount of hot babes or I'll wring your stupid British neck." Michael said, having Barbs and I laugh at him. As we hung up, I sat there for a little while, twiddling my thumbs and looking at the house through the car window.

"I'll stay out here just in case you need a quick getaway. I'll be your Robin for today." She grinned and unlocked the doors for me.

"Thanks." I smiled to her before opening the car door and trudging out onto the lawn to make it to the front. My palms were sweaty and I had a nervous habit of running a hand through my hair as I stopped just before the front doors.

Never had I been so nervous. I couldn't believe that I was here, about to ask for her father's consent on asking her to be mine, to propose to her. It was a weird thing to think about because I had never considered the fact that I might do this sometime.

When I knocked on the door, I begin to panic. I turned around to where Barbs was still parked, watching everything in her seat. I was glad I wasn't alone in this.

"Yes?" I turned to see her father standing at the door with an apron on and his hands wiping themselves on a towel. "Gavin? Is that you?" A grin spread on his face as he ushered me in.

"Hi, Mr. Downing." I smiled as I took in the room before me. It was the living area and I could make out the pictures that lined the wall and brick fireplace. Most of them holding childhood photos of Jane. It was weird seeing her with blond hair in some of the pictures.

"Mason, please. Jane's still at school." I followed him to the kitchen where the smell of cooking meat could be distinguished.

"Actually, I came to talk with you," I said and he turned around once he went behind the island to where the meat was being marinated. "It's something that's been on my mind for a month now." I sat on one of the stools when he motioned me to.

"Okay, what is it?" Mason said as he sprinkled on ingredients. I tapped my hands on the granite countertop as I plucked up the courage to say what I had in my mind. I could tell he was watching my movements and the way I tapped my fingers and moved my feet up and down made him raise his eyebrows. "You seem nervous."

"Well, once I tell you, I'm sure you'll understand," I chuckled and he stopped what he was doing to listen. "I came here to ask you something."

"Does it involve my daughter by chance?" I noticed a slight Irish accent coating his words as he spoke. I never did before, but when he mentioned Jane it seemed to have peeked out and became gruffer.

"Yes, it does, but nothing bad, I assure you," I smiled and he nodded, keeping his eyes fixed on me. His grey gaze reminded me of a glacier, cold and hard. "I, uh," At that moment I fished around my pocket to retrieve the black box that settled in there. When I pulled it out and set it on the counter, I could hear him gasp lightly. "I've had this in my pocket for the last month now. I didn't know when the best time time would be or how to do it. I'm literally scared out of my mind. I love your daughter, with all of my heart, and I really want to spend the rest of my life with her. I never knew a girl could have such a strong hold on me, but your daughter definitely has a strong grip," He chuckled at that. "She means everything to me. So, that's why, I came here to ask for your blessing to ask for her hand," I paused for a moment and soon enough I began rambling." And I know it's sort of selfish because she's here, with you, and she's going to the college of her dreams and trust me when I say I don't want to take her away from it. I know--" Before I could continue, Mason held up his hand.

"Gavin. Calm down, son," He was grinning from ear to ear and even though his eyes were still glacier cold, I knew he wasn't upset or angry. "Rambling won't get you anywhere." He chucked and I felt a smile grow on my face.

"Sorry." I said and he just shrugged, going back to seasoning his roast.

"I was just like you when I asked for Violet's hand." He seemed to remember and a ghost of a smile played on his lips.

"Jane's mum?" I asked and he nodded.

"I was exactly like you, nervous and scared about rejection. The worst was asking her father's blessing, like you are. I do understand why you're nervous, but let me tell you that I like you, Gavin. This may be our second meeting, but from what Jane has told me, I can tell you're perfect for her. Unluckily for me, Violet's father hated my guts," We both chuckled. "He would give me the coldest stares, the longest lectures, but in the end he was grateful that I truly loved his daughter."

I played with the box as he continued, "You don't have to worry at all. I give you my blessing." At his words, my eyes shot up and a grin spread on my face.

"Really?" I asked. I guess I really didn't have to worry about anything.

"Yes. You make my daughter really happy. You made her finally free from the depression she was suffering and I can't thank you enough." Mason smiled to me, leaning over and patting my shoulder encouragingly. I had a new confidence growing inside of me and I was glad I was feeling it.

"Thank you, but I'm still nervous about asking her though." I tell him and he chuckled, nodding.

"It's a hard thing to do, I completely know what you're saying. Proposing to the woman you love sounds easy, but once you buy that ring, you start feeling doubts and eventually become nervous by the minute," Mason began to season the meat some more as he spoke. "When are you thinking about doing it?"

"I don't know. Our friend, Barbara, said I should do it before I leave, but I know Jane and if she says 'yes', she'll drop everything here." I shook my head and flipped the box open and close.

"I know her too and you're right. She would. The way she speaks when she mentions you, tells me all. She would do anything for you. I'm glad you see her desires, unlike her last boyfriend did. He did things without her knowing." Mason had a look of pure distaste in his eyes and I knew why. Will was an arsehole, someone that didn't know how special Jane was.

"Well, I wouldn't keep anything from her. If I do, it'd probably be my jealousy doing that." I sighed out.

"Oh, yes. She told me about your tiff on Danny. Don't worry. Nothing is going on between them. I mean, I haven't met the lad, but she told me he means nothing to her bedsides friendly." Mason nodded and I smiled. "So, do you want to wait for Jane while I cook this? I'd love to have you over for dinner." He says, putting the roast in a pot to simmer.

"Sure. Oh, my friend is still in the car." I motioned behind me.

"They can come in and join us. I have enough to feed a whole pack of wolves."

_____

(Jane's POV)

"Bye!" I yelled out to Carrie as she sped away, blasting Les Miserable. There was an unrecognisable car parked along the curb in front of my house, so I suspected my father had a guest over.

Inside, my dad's famous home roast was filling the room and I smiled at the familiar smell. While my nose took in the scent, my ears picked up laughing and I couldn't help but go and see the people that were here.

My eyes almost popped out of my head when I saw Gavin and Barbs perched at on the island stools, laughing at my dad who was, no doubt, telling a story. "What's going on?" I spoke up and each pair of eyes looked my way.

"Welcome back, darling," My father said, wiping down the counter. "How was class?"

"Fine. We had to write a five-page essay." I sat down my bag and folders on the table before joining them. Gavin smiled at me, tugging on my arm and bringing me onto his lap as he kissed my cheek.

"Ew. I would flip a bitch." Barbara said, making my dad laugh from her crude language.

"What are you guys doing here? Not trying to be rude, but I'm surprised. What about the convention? How long have you been here?" I let the questions roll off my to tongue.

"Burnie let us go early," Barbara said.

"And we've been here for about 2 hours now." Gavin finished and I raised my eyebrows at him. What was he up to? I knew my father's presence intimidated him, so being here with just Barbs made me wonder.

"Why?" I asked and Gavin chuckled, placing his cheek against the side of my head.

"Well, jeez, Jay. We love you too." Barbara said, earning my dad to laugh again.

"I'm happy you're here, but there has to be a reason." I shrugged, but Gavin just rolled his eyes and shook his head. "Fine, I'm just going to put my stuff away." I moved off of Gavin and collected my books and I knew, as I made my way to my room, that he followed close behind.

When I entered my room, I sighed and undid the braided bun I had on top of my head, letting it hang in loose curls that brushed the middle of my back. As I began to turn to my bathroom, a pair of arms slid around my waist, pulling me against a body.

"Hi, Gavin." I giggled as he left kisses on the back of my neck to my jawline. "What are you doing?" I said, turning around and facing him. He had an arrogant glint in his eyes, his smirk on his adorable face. Before I could ask him again, Gavin pushed me against the wall, picking me up so my legs immediately wrapped around his waist and I cupped his face as he kissed under my chin, having me turn my head up. "Gavin, you do know my dad's just down the hall?" I ran my hands trough his hair.

"I can make it quick." His voice was muffled against my neck. I moved his head up towards me and I crushed my lips against his, pressing against him and letting out a slight moan as he gripped my thighs.

"At least lock the bloody door. I don't want him seeing us grinding against each other." I whispered and he let out a light laugh before doing what I said.

______

Barbs chuckled at us as we came back out of my bedroom. We were only gone for 5 minutes and I was speechless from Gavin's quick moves. I knew Barbara had an idea of what happened, but my father seemed complete oblivious to the whole situation.

"Shut up." I mumbled to her and that only made her laugh louder. Gavin had his smirk still plastered on his face as he sat next to me at the dinner table, his hand grazing my thigh and rubbing up and down. "Don't become a cocky arsehole." I said and he just grinned back.

"Alright. It's ready." My dad said and soon enough he placed the slices of his roast down in the table. Barbara sat across from me, throwing glances at Gavin a few times, like they were having a private conversation.

When my dad say next to her, everyone began to fill their plates, but I had my eyes glued on the blond in front of me, casually throwing looks to Gavin. What was going on? Why were they so secretive?

"This is really good, Mason." Barbs said around a mouthful of beef. He chuckled and thanked her. After that the dinner table was silent again, but now and then I would catch Barbs, and even my father, sending Gavin glimpses which he returned. What the fuck is going on?

"So, what happened today?" I asked, casually trying to start a conversation. But mostly to extract information.

"Nothing really." Barbara replied and I looked to Gavin, but he shrugged, like it wasn't important. I then looked to my father, who was once again giving Gavin a look.

"I worked on the car and just prepared food." He smiled and I nodded. At least someone said something besides 'nothing.' But soon enough, everything went silent once more and again glances were thrown at Gavin.

"Okay, what's with the looks? What are you guys doing?" I asked and Barbs and my father looked at me, trying to pull off confused looks. "Don't pull this bullshit." I pointed at them, but they looked at each other.

"Nothing, Jane." My dad smiled at me and then he took a glance at Gavin once more, making me scoff.

"Okay, Gavin," I turned to him and I saw his body tense. "What's going on?" When he only shrugged, I rolled my eyes at him. All of a sudden, my dad and Barbs stood with their plates, smiled to the both of us, and left without another word. "What?" I raised my eyebrows as Gavin chuckled, making me look back at him.

"You're adorable when you're confused." He said and I gave him a confused look, having him laugh. "Here." He grabbed my hand as he pulled me up, having us leave the table. I was about to question him as he pulled me to the back door that led to the garden, when I took notice of tiny rose petals on the floor, leading outside.

"Gavin, what-" He shushed me as he opened the door, still grasping my hand and pulling me along. Soon enough, we were outside, the garden my dad takes care of was in full bloom around us and the fragrance they gave off was suffocating me in a good way. The petals were scattered around the grass and I also saw many white candles were stuck in the ground or even on the tiled wall around the garden. It took my breath away as I took it all in.

"Thank God, they're still burning." I heard Gavin mumble to himself and my attention immediately snapped back to him.

"What's going on?" I asked. The petals and candles reminded me of our first date, minus the table and food we had before. I couldn't grasp what was going in. He looked nervous and his fingers twitched as they grasped both of my hands. When he turned to me, I saw how his green eyes were more vibrant and deeper they were. "What is all this?" I asked and he chuckled, pulling me against him and touching his forehead to mine.

"Don't you feel déjà vu?" He asked.

"Well, it reminds me of our first date. The rose petals, candles. Why, though?" I asked, touching his cheek with my fingers, our breaths mingling together. "How were you able to do this?"

"Your dad had a bunch of candles lying about and he helped cut up some roses from this garden." He said, making me giggle.

"What for?" I asked, biting my lip.

"I thought this would make what I'm about to do a lot more special." He said and I could feel my eyebrows furrow in confusion. "Jane, I love you more than I thought I could ever love anyone."

"I love you too." I smiled and pecked his lips, making him smile and tilt my head up with his fingers.

"You know, I would do anything for you, right? And if anything ever happened to you, I would probably lose my mind. You mean so much to me, more than words can describe. You have been the only one to make me feel this way. My other relationships can't even compare to this one--it's special, something I don't want to let go. You are the one that keeps me going everyday, you are the one that has helped me through so much and I hope you realise that you will be the only one to ever claim my heart. You may be better than me at video games, you may find it funny when I get upset or if I hurt myself and you may be a little devil when you threaten me with wet bread," I laughed lightly at the last part. "But that doesn't matter. I love you. You opened my eyes, Jane." I could tell he was becoming more nervous as he let everything pour out and as I ran my hand down his arm and have it lock around my waist, he eventually becomes less tense. "I want to spend every second of my life with you. I want to wake up in the morning and see you there beside me, I want to kiss you good morning before work, and most importantly, I want you to share my last name." My heart picked up its pace as he began to untangle himself from me and slowly move down to one knee. I was shaking and my eyes widened down at him.

"G-Gavin?" I said shakily and I could feel the tears start to build up in my eyes as he reached into his pocket, pulling out a black velvet box.

"Jane," I waited for him to speak, my hands covering my mouth as he licked his lips and opened the box, revealing a gorgeous ring. "Please, will you marry me and make me the happiest person in the world?"
