Bree's Needs and Please Jane
(Jane's POV)
I missed Gavin. He wasn't due back home until the end of the week, which was in three days. My hormones were driving me up the walls and the hours of spending my time in our little apartment was eating away at my sanity.
Bree was too busy with her new friend, Barbs was away at home in Canada, and Lindsay and Kara were dealing with work. I missed being at the Roosterteeth office--hanging out with the lads, playing games and laughing my arse off, the Podcasts.
As I sat there, writing a two page essay for my online class, I began to feel the need for human contact. Picking up my phone, I dialed Ellie's number, hearing the long rings go off until her cheery, thick accented voice filled the line.
"Hi, Jane! What do you need, love?" Her voice was always so light and filled with so much happiness that it never seemed like she had any problems or was ever dealt with sorrowful crap.
"A friend." I mumbled.
"Sounds like my area of expertise. I'll just finish up this pie I'm making and I'll bring it over with me." She giggled and I could hear something metal open and close.
"You're baking?" I asked, finishing the conclusion sentence in my essay and sending it to my professor.
"It's what I do in my spare time. My mum owned a bakery when I was little, so I learned a few things. Anyway, I'll just do this and I'll be right there!" 20 minutes later she showed up, her wavy hair strung up in a messy ponytail and she wore a pair of cut-off overalls with a flowered shirt underneath. She held an oval shaped pan in her hands, the top covered in aluminium. Her fingers were stained with white powder. The smell the pie gave off was wonderful and warm.
"I'm guessing that's the pie?" I laughed and ushered her in, where she skipped and brought the pie into the kitchen.
"Yes. It's apple, if you were wondering. My boyfriend is coming soon to visit, so I made a few. He really loves them." She unwrapped the foil that was on top to reveal a professional styles pie with intricate cut designs along the crusts
"That looks good." I said, my mouth watering from the delicious smell.
"Well, you'll definitely have some!" She smiled. We had at least two plates each of the wonderful pie, our stomachs filling equally. We talked for at least an hour, misty about the baby and I couldn't help the excited smile that covered my face.
"I still can't Gavin is going to be a father." Ellie said, shaking her head as she flipped through channels on the television.
"I can believe I'm going to be a mother." I said, the words weird coming from me. It was true. Never had I believed I would be a mother at 23 years old. It wasn't entirely a bad thing, but definitely something strange.
"Parenthood is something no one will be ready for, Jane," Ellie said, turning her eyes to me. She moved a stray wavy brown strand away from her forehead and smiled softly. "It's a gift, a reward at times and sometimes a hardship, but it will always be weird to know that you have created something with the person you love--a little person."
"That was deep." I giggled and she laughed along, nodding her head, making her loose ponytail become undone and spill over her shoulders.
"Yeah. Anyway, how about we talk about your wedding? It's been a dream to go to Lindsay and Michael's, but since that passed, I'll just have to settle with yours and Gavin's." she pulled my laptop from its orange case from the wood coffee table and we spent the rest of the day discussing wedding ideas.
________
(Bree's POV)
"Ray," I said, walking out of the bathroom, putting in one of my small earrings as I get ready to meet Brad for a friendly dinner. He wasn't bringing Madi since the babysitter came, so we would be by ourselves. "Ray?"
He was sitting on the sofa, watching some random movie as I strolled in. "Hm." Was all he said.
"You okay?" I chuckled softly and walked over to him, sitting down beside his unmoving body. "You seem distant." His body tensed and his jaw clenched. When I placed a hand on his arm, he moved it away, never looking at me.
"I'm not the one being distant." He muttered, his sigh distressed.
"What?" I raised an eyebrow. "What are you saying?"
He shrugged and flicked his once warm brown eyes at me for a split second before turning them back to the screen. That was long enough to see a cold, sad look in his eyes that made my heart skip a fluttering beat. "Nothing," He sighed. "Have fun at your dinner." With that he stayed silent as I stood up and grabbed my emerald coloured purse on the stool at the kitchen counter.
"Bye." I smiled weakly before heading out. Before I closed the door, I thought I heard a soft 'I love you too.' I felt unreasonable tears spill over my cheeks for some reason, but I wiped them away and went down the stairs to be met with Brad's red convertible driving up.
His hair was it's usual ruffled sandy blond were ruffled from driving against warm wind. "Hey!" He smiled, his hazel eyes looking me up and down. "You look great. Where's Ray?" He asked, looking around me. I gulped as I stepped inside the car and sat.
"He couldn't make it. Very busy." I chuckled lightly, not making eye contact with him. I felt his fingers lightly touch underneath my chin so I could look at him.
"You okay?" He asked.
"Y-yeah." I smiled and nodded, reassuring him. His hazel eyes warmed the cold emptiness that haunted my mind and I couldn't help the smile that lined my face.
"Good," Brad said, pushing back his sandy hair away from his eyes. "Because I planned a whole night for us." As he started up the engine, I wondered if this was a date. Was I on a date while I was in a relationship or was this just a friendly outing? I wasn't too sure.
"A-Are we on a date?" I asked him, running a hand through my black curls and smoothing down my dress.
"Well, you have a boyfriend," Brad chuckled, stopping at a red light, making his beautiful eyes look towards me, the street lights reflecting in them. "So, it depends on how you want it."
What did I want? I liked Brad as a friend, but believing this to be a date had something deep within my heart flutter and stop momentarily. Yes, Brad was a very attractive man, but Ray will always be the one I love, but sometimes I wonder if he feels the same.
Every time I've tried to make him feel pleasured or happy, he seemed to retract away from me and treat me as if I was a friend. That's my reason behind being with Brad because he makes me feel like a special woman that has a lot to live for. Maybe that's something I want.
"A friendly date." I smiled and he laughed lightly, making me giggle.
________
(Jane's POV)
"Tell me why you called again?" I asked as I sat in Ray's flat. He called me, saying he wanted to talk and to be honest, his tone of voice scared me. Not in a frightening way, but more concerned.
"It's Bree." He said, slouching against the back of the couch, moving his glasses so he could rub his tired, brown eyes.
"Again?" I sighed out, taking a drink from the water bottle he offered me.
"Yeah. Haven't you noticed how distant she's been?" He asked.
"Well, kind of. She's been on a roll with this Brad guy. Apparently they are very similar." I shrugged.
"Yeah. They are both Art enthusiasts, they like the same coffee, same music, same shows, same stupid shit," his voice became more aggressive and I could tell it pained him to see Bree with someone else, someone that has all of the same interests. "I miss her, Jay. I did push her away, but only when she was becoming too grabby and needy. She was acting all seductive, trying to jump me whenever we were alone." He shook his head.
"Isn't that what guys want?" I chuckled.
"Yeah, sure, but I just don't like how all of a sudden she began acting like that. Can you help me? Please Jane? I'm growing tired of dealing with a new problem with her, but I'm not ready to give up." He sounded genuinely tired and scared about their relationship. I missed how cute and lovey they were in the beginning, so it made me pissed off that Bree would do this.
"I'll try." I smiled.
"Thanks." I stayed with Ray that night, waiting for Bree to come back...but she never did.
