IV
According to Judy, we've been here with her 'pack' for three weeks. Yesterday, I was able to leave the house for a little bit for a walk with her. It was nice to see something other than the few rooms that I had been stuck in. It hasn't passed my notice that whenever I leave my room, Dean, Gabriel, or Judy is always with me.
I was getting better, Judy kept telling me and I believed her. Everything about me was feeling stronger than I have ever felt in my life. Every now and then, however, she would start asking about my 'pack', where I was from and the like. Of course, none of her questions received answers. I had none to give her.
I sat in the den, eyes closed, listening to the people around me talking. Most of the topics were about the celebration that was rapidly approaching. And many of them were excited to see the people that were coming. Rubbing my temples, I try to wish the pounding headache away. They started maybe three weeks ago, and they were just getting worse. The sound of feet headed my way had my hands quickly landing in my lap. For some reason, I didn't want anyone to know that I had been having headaches.
Dean entered the den and took a seat across from me. "How are you feeling today?" He asked me softly. I just shrugged and he smiled again. "So, I've been thinking and I've decided that we'll start your training today. Of course, you'll have to shift so I will know what size wolf you have." I felt my brows lower in confusion. "You have shifted, haven't you Cleo?"
Suddenly, I couldn't explain it, but I was beyond anger. And the raging headache wasn't helping me at all. I surged to my feet. "No!" I growled out at him, the headache making me see double. The voice I heard sounded weak, rough, and foreign.
Surprise settled on his face as I spoke and he just sat there, staring at me. "I haven't shifted. I don't have a 'pack'. I don't know who I am. I don't know where I am from. And I don't know if I have a family. So would you just please stop asking me those questions over and over again." My throat felt sore by the time I finished speaking. My body felt hot as I massaged my head. "Cleo?" Dean asked as he stood up looking concerned.
"I... I don't feel good." My words were barely out of my mouth before a wave of excruciating pain washed over me. My legs buckled out from under me and the last thing I saw was Dean rushing towards me as I crumpled to the floor.
Gabriel heard an unfamiliar voice yelling at his brother as he hurried to the den. He arrived just in time to watch as Cleo fainted. Dean managed to catch her just before her body hit the hard floor. "What happened, Dean?" Gabriel asked as he walked towards them. "I'm not sure man. I was just telling her that we'll start her training today, but she'd have to shift so I'd know where to place her. The next thing I know, she's yelling at me that she doesn't know anything about herself before she fainted."
Before Gabriel could speak, the sound of bones breaking filled the room. Both men looked at each other before springing into action. Dean picked the girl up and rushed outside. Gabriel linked the doctor before letting the pack know to stay away from the shifting grounds. Once the doctor was beside him, Gabriel took off running after his brother. He had never known a werewolf to shift this late in life, but then again, given how she had been kept, it wasn't really that much of a surprise that she hadn't shifted earlier.
By the time both men reached their alpha, Cleo was more than half-way shifted, though she was still unconscious. "This is not good." The doctor muttered softly, but Dean and Gabriel heard him clearly. "Never in my two hundred years have I ever witnessed a wolf shifting while unconscious. I've heard storied about it, but most of them don't end well; for the human and the wolf. If she survives this with her wolf intact, she'll need a lot of help."
A woeful whine left Cleo's throat that gripped the men's heart as if they could feel her pain. They watched helplessly as she arched her back as a loud cry of pain exploded from her lips. "Toby... Help me, please." Cried Cleo just before the shift was completed. Gabriel was struck by the color of her coat. It was a deep smoky gray that reminded him of a heavy mist just as the sun starts to rise with two pure black strips running down on either sides of her backbone.
"She's large for a female." The doctor commented as he quickly checked her vitals, noting that she had a strong pulse. Dean took an experimental sniff of the air and growled softly, his wolf surfacing. "She smells like an alpha."
"I don't remember any of the alphas in the states searching for a missing member of their family." Gabriel commented softly, his eyes still on Cleo's wolf. Dean chuckled softly causing Gabriel to finally look at him. "Well, I guess we know what group to put her in when she starts training."
"Are you insane?" Gabriel growled out. "They'll destroy her." Dean met his brother's eyes, who couldn't hold the stare for long. "They won't hurt her Gabe, you know that. They'll work with her, helping her through each stage of training." Silence filled the clearing as both men watched the doctor work.
He slid the vial of blood that he took from the wolf into his bag and stood up. "As far as I can tell Alpha, both she and her wolf made it through. But, it is really impossible to be completely sure until she awakens. I have a feeling that this is her first time shifting, so you might want to have someone watch her when she comes to, just to be on the safe side."
Dean nodded slowly and told Gabriel to take Cleo to one of the large hospital rooms. Gabriel quickly knelt and slid his arms under the wolf, his body freezing instantly. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing," he replied softly, standing up with Cleo in his arms. Keeping his face wiped of anything, he swiftly headed to the hospital, and his heart filled with concern for the woman who now meant the world to him; a woman who he was terrified of hurting.
A soft moan left my lips as I shifted on the bed, my eyes slowly opening. Startled, I sit up, looking around. My eyes quickly land on a sleeping Gabriel and I just stare at him, confused. The white walls told me that I was in the hospital, but as I racked my brain, I couldn't remember why I was in here.
I just stared at him, not knowing what to call him. His family called him by his name, but the rest of the people I had met here called him 'Beta'. I didn't want to upset him by calling him the wrong thing, so I kept my lips closed. Suddenly, he yawned and sat up, rubbing his face slowly as he did.
His eyes fluttered open and locked with mine. For several seconds, we just stared at each other. I could feel my heart racing as a longing to rush towards him washed over me. Mentally shaking my head, I pull my eyes away from him and look down, embarrassed and confused. "How are you feeling Cleo?" He asked me softly and I just shrugged. "Okay I guess." I muttered softly, the words feeling out of place in my mouth.
"Most of us are pretty sore after a long shift like you've had. But that will be gone in a day or so." Shift? What was he talking about? I felt a slight pressure in my head but it wasn't like the headaches I had been having. I have waited a long time to finally meet you my human. A silvery voice spoke and I jumped. My eyes quickly scanned the room but I saw no one other than Gabriel. I watched as he stood up and quickly walked to the side of my bed.
I opened my mouth to speak when the voice spoke again. Don't be frightened my human, I'm a part of you. I'm your wolf; Morna. My breathing hitched as I tried to find out where the voice was coming from. I felt a hand on my arm that was quickly followed by a sensation of sparks running along my skin.
I look at Gabriel, worry written on my face. "You're alright. Tell me what's happening."
"I... I hear a woman speaking. But, I can't find her." Gabriel laughed softly and the sound made my heart flutter. Why was he causing me to feel this way? "You won't be able to see her Cleo, because she is a part of you. That voice you are hearing is your wolf spirit, and you are the only one that can hear her."
I just stared at him, not really understanding. He sighed softly and I could tell by the look in his eyes, he was thinking. "You are a werewolf. Because of how you have been forced to live for Goddess knows how long, you never shifted when you were younger. Your wolf must have felt safe here to finally come out and speak with you. She will never do anything to hurt you, just like you would never do anything to hurt her."
He smiled at me and I knew that he wanted me to understand, so I just slowly nodded my head. He smiled at me and I found myself shyly smiling back at him. Suddenly, my mind picks up a part of what he just told me and I froze. He called me a werewolf.
I knew nothing about them, except for one fact. The master was one; a horrendous wolf that thrived off the pain and suffering of others. Fear and dread filled me. Is that what I am, a monster? As the thought fluttered around in my mind, Gabriel suddenly tensed and hurried back to his chair. Just as he sat down, I could hear Judy's perky voice getting closer. As the door opened to reveal her smiling face, I couldn't help but wonder what was going to happen to me.
