Chapter 49
After Beth left, Olli and Hannah returned the crib to Dupuis. He made a joke that they didn't need it longer, which Hannah didn't appreciate.
"No. I don't think Beth will be coming back anytime soon." She said bitterly, and Duper decided not to ask. "Thanks for letting us borrow it, though."
"No problem."
The pair left with Olli smiling and Hannah still scowling about Beth. Underneath that frown, she was beyond excited about her film debuting in January. It was her dream come true, everything she'd worked toward. But hopefully it was just the beginning.
She spent the rest of the week making plans for January, including working with an agent (something she'd never done before) to book interviews promoting the movie. Hannah was so distracted by this she didn't even notice Olli, who seemed to be wrapped up in his own dream.
When he returned from an away game at the end of the week, he couldn't keep his thoughts to himself any more. He was ready to tell Hannah what had been on his mind, and he wasn't afraid of how she might react. He knew she may not take it well at first, but with time he hoped she would come round to it.
"I think we should have a baby."
Olli's words hit Hannah like a slap in the face. "What?!"
"You were so great with Finn, and I think now is the right time for us to start a family."
Hannah was starting to feel sick. Start a family? These kinds of words were for grown ups, not her barely 21 year old husband.
"But why now? We just got married less than a few months ago, what's the rush?"
"Because if we start now, it will most likely be born in the summer, during the off season."
Hannah sighed. Olli was always thinking ahead and had a logical answer for everything. "That does make sense, but why now? We can always wait until next year?"
"But why wait? We have everything going for us right now. My contract has been extended, your film is going to debut this January; things are going great!" He smiled and Hannah saw how happy he was, and how much he wanted this. She wanted nothing more to make him happy, but was she ready?
"I need to think about this," she smiled nervously, and he understood. Having a baby wasn't something you did without thinking about. Unless you didn't mean to.
Across Pittsburgh, Kasperi was scrolling through his phone looking at all the pictures he'd taken of his son last week. He didn't know why he felt this way, but he missed him. At first he had been terrified by that tiny human being, worried he would drop him, or that he would start crying and he wouldn't be able to stop him. He didn't think he could hold him and feed him a bottle without dropping one (or both) of them; he thought he would accidentally drown him when he was giving him a bath; he thought he wouldn't know what to do with him, or what to say. But everything that had once seemed like an obstacle was now an exciting new part of his life
Several days later Hannah's head was still spinning at Olli's suggestion. She'd thought about it non-stop since he brought it up and still couldn't wrap her head around the idea. She wasn't ready, and she didn't think she would be anytime soon. However, if there was one person that could convince her, it was Olli.
He wasn't persistent and let her think about it in peace. He realized how much of a commitment this was, and he knew she was the one with the most to lose. She would be the one who had to look after it while he was playing hockey and on long road trips. She would have to get up at night and take care of it so he could sleep well before a game. She was the one who would have to balance all of that with her career.
"You know, most people get a dog or something when they get married, and then maybe have kids," Hannah mentioned at dinner.
"A dog would be nice," Olli smiled. "But I still think we should start now."
"Are you sure you aren't just 'baby crazy' because of Finn's visit?"
"No, I've been thinking about this for a while," Olli explained. "Ever since I saw you holding Finn in the hospital room after he was born. Actually, before that. It really started in Sochi."
Hannah recalled what had happened in Sochi and cringed. She had told him about her late period, and that one positive test. False positive. She couldn't imagine seeing that plus sign and having it be a good thing.
"Then I guess I should start thinking about this more seriously. I was hoping it would blow over or you would forget about it, but I guess that's not something you forget about." Hannah sighed and looked down at her plate. She couldn't disappoint him if this is what he really wanted.
"And I don't want to hurry you, but you'd have to get off the pill and that might take a bit for your cycle to get back to normal."
"Wow, you really have been looking into this," Hannah was impressed. She hadn't even thought of the fact that she would need to stop taking the pill. After her incident with Jason, the pill had been like her safety blanket, and giving it up would be difficult.
But could she do it for Olli?
She had five pills left, so she had twelve days to think about whether or not she wanted to get her prescription refilled and wait another month, or if she was ready to try getting pregnant.
Ew. Trying to get pregnant. Hannah hated those words, and recalled the last person who had told her they were 'trying to get pregnant' and decided to meet up with him in a few days. She and Brandon met at their usual diner to get their usual cinnamon waffles and catch up, and they had a lot to talk about.
Hannah wasn't sure if should tell Brandon that Olli wanted to have kids. However, she didn't have a chance to think about it because Brandon started the conversation with the announcement he and Rachel had succeeded in getting pregnant.
He looked beyond happy, to the point where Hannah thought he might cry. "I'm going to be a dad," he added with a laugh.
"Congratulations." Hannah felt anxious. If her friends were having kids, then maybe she was old enough to too.
"We're pretty excited. The due date should be sometime in July."
"That's good, it's in the off season." Hannah thought of Olli's comment.
"Yeah, it's convenient it worked out that way, but we weren't really planning on that. I don't really care when we have a baby, I'm just excited it's happening."
"It kind of happened pretty fast, didn't it?"
"We pretty much got it on the first try. I didn't know it would be that easy!"
This did not help Hannah in making her big decision. If it was that easy, then she could be pregnant within a few weeks. Her palms got sweaty and she felt her face turning pink. The blood rushing through her ears became louder and louder as her breath rate sped up.
"Hannah," Brandon repeated. "Are you okay?"
She shook her head and ran outside, suddenly feeling claustrophobic in the empty diner. The cool October air washed over her and soon she was shivering. Brandon joined her and handed her her jacket.
"I took care of the bill, I figured you were done eating."
"Thanks." Hannah shrugged her jacket on.
"Is everything alright?"
"I just have a lot of stuff I have to do. I should go," she started walking toward her car but remembered she and Brandon had carpooled, since they're neighbors now.
"I can take you home, or drop you off at Consol and Olli can drive you back."
Hannah wanted to be alone, and not have to see Olli's subtle questing stare all the time. She knew he was waiting for an answer, and her time was running out.
"Just take me home. But don't talk about being pregnant any more."
Brandon didn't question it, and instead discussed the upcoming game against the Ducks. He had an idea why Hannah had reacted so strongly toward the subject of being pregnant, something that possibly had to do with her nephew visiting.
When Hannah got home she went into her office and tried to clear her head. She thought hard for a long time, weighing the options. She closed her eyes and tried to make a list of pros and cons, but when she opened them she saw something that made up her mind.
On the corner of her desk was her and Olli's wedding photo. They both looked so happy, like nothing could ever bring them down. Yet here Hannah was, tearing herself in half trying to make up her mind. Next to their wedding photo was a framed picture of her nephew that Beth had given her. It brought back images of Kasperi holding his son with a look of sheer happiness and adoration on his face.
And Hannah knew what she had to do. She quickly walked upstairs before she had time to talk herself out of it, and popped the remaining pills out of her birth control packet and flushed them down the toilet. She took a deep breath, but her knees were already starting to shake. She sat down on the edge of the bathtub and held the empty packet in her shaking hands.
'"I'm going to get pregnant."
