Chapter 47
Duper had come through with the crib and dropped it off the day before Beth and Finn were going to arrive. He and Olli left to play golf with Tanger and a few other teammates. Hannah looked over the crib, which Duper had kindly put back in the original box, but the instructions were missing. After an hour of trying to put it together, Hannah gave up.
"Why isn't Olli around when I need him?" She leaned up against the door of what was supposed to be the nursery. She thought of calling Kasperi to help her, but that might be too stressful for him. After how distracted he'd seemed all week waiting for Beth and Finn's visit, perhaps this would be too much to ask. But what about her new neighbor?
"Hey Brandon," she said when he answered the phone. "Are you busy?"
"No, what's up?"
"Olli's out golfing with Dupuis and some of the guys, would you be able to come over and....help me with something?" She didn't feel like explaining her conundrum over the phone.
"Uh, okay?" Brandon's mind was wandering a bit, and he didn't like where it was going. He shook his head and tried to clear his thoughts. "I'll be over in a few minutes."
"And, can you bring a screw driver?"
Fifteen minutes later, Brandon showed up at Hannah and Olli's house with a screwdriver. He knocked, but the door was open so he came in.
"I'm upstairs," Hannah called. She looked over the crib parts one last time, but still had no idea how it was supposed to go together. Brandon came upstairs slowly. He wasn't sure what Hannah was up to, and didn't know why he'd need a screwdriver. He walked into the room Hannah had called from and found her sitting in the middle of what looked like it was supposed to be a nursery.
"Uh...Hannah?" He asked. She stood up and took the screwdriver from him.
"Yes! I think this is the right one." She smiled and tried matching one of the screws with it. "Thanks!"
"What is going on here?" Brandon finally asked. "First, you call me over here saying Olli's out and you need to see me, and now you're trying to put together a crib?" He eyed her carefully and tried to figure out what was going on.
"I'm trying to set up this crib, but it doesn't have instructions."
Brandon stared at Hannah dumbstruck. "Hannah, are you pregnant?"
"No, do I look pregnant?" She looked up at him, slightly offended.
"Why do you need a crib?"
"It's for my nephew."
It hit Brandon, and he suddenly remembered who Hannah's nephew was- Kasperi's son. "Oh man, is this his first time visiting?"
"Yeah, and Kasperi's first time seeing him. So, if he's a little off this week, that's why. And I'm not sure he wants the whole team knowing, so could you maybe keep this to yourself?"
"Yeah, of course. So, how does this thing go together?" Brandon and Hannah set about trying to put the crib together. With the proper screwdriver it went much faster and the two had it put together in half an hour.
"Thanks! Want a beer? Or something?" Hannah offered. She felt like she should do something to thank him.
"Sure." They wandered down to the kitchen and found something to drink, chatting about the upcoming games and Finn's visit.
"So, do I get to see him?"
"Sure. I can invite you and Rachel over for dinner. Maybe Wednesday?" Hannah checked the Penguins schedule on her phone to see when they were available.
"That would be great! And I can babysit if you want, I love babies," Brandon smiled.
"If you love babies so much, why don't you have one," Hannah teased.
Brandon choked on his beer and coughed a few times. "Actually, we've been thinking about trying for a baby soon."
"Eww, don't tell me that," Hannah made a face.
"What?" Brandon had been expecting an 'aww' or at least a 'congratulations' or 'good for you' kind of reaction.
"I don't need to know that you're 'trying' to have a baby. Whether or not you have unprotected sex is none of my business." Hannah replied with an air of mock disgust.
"Hey, you're the one that brought it up," Brandon defended, and took another sip of his beer. "So, does this mean you and Olli haven't even talked about having kids?"
"Just because we got married doesn't mean we're going to start procreating immediately! He's only 21, I think the guy should have a chance to grow up before he has children. It could be ten years before we get around to having a family."
"Ten years? Won't you be a little old by then?" Brandon teased.
"Shut up, 35 is not too old to have a baby. Maybe we'll adopt, who knows?" Hannah dropped the subject and asked Brandon about an upcoming game. She and Olli hadn't talked about this at all, and she didn't feel comfortable talking about it with Brandon before Olli. She knew the subject would probably come up when Beth and Finn were visiting, because that's the kind of thing Beth liked to asked. 'When are you guys having a baby?'
And then there was going to be the issue of the wedding, and why Beth wasn't invited. Hannah didn't know if she was up to facing all these questions. Maybe Beth would want to hang out with the wags again? That would distract her for a while.
On his way out the door, Brandon stopped to say one last thing to Hannah. "Oh, and next time you ask me to come over 'because Olli isn't around,' try not to sound like you want to start some secret affair with me."
"What? I don't know what you're talking about, but why would you come over if you thought I was trying to have sex with you?" Hannah asked and raised an eyebrow in confusion and astonishment.
"Well, I wasn't really sure what was going on, and then you said you needed a screwdriver and I realized maybe this wasn't what I thought it was." Brandon looked a little embarrassed, but he laughed.
Hannah stared at him for a minute before continuing. "Does this have to do with what you told me before your wedding?"
"What? Of course not," he laughed nervously again. "I'd better get going, before Rachel get's suspicious."
With that, he left and walked down the street to his house. Hannah looked after him for a minute, wondering if what just happened had really just happened. 'Did Brandon Sutter really think I wanted to have sex with him?' Hannah laughed and poured herself another drink. 'Wow, just when I thought I'd seen everything.'
She elected not to tell Olli that part of Brandon's visit, but when he returned from golfing Hannah showed him the crib. The nursery still looked a bit bare, but it was just temporary, and she was sure Finn wouldn't notice.
"This room doesn't look so bad as a nursery," Olli commented. "I always thought we'd use the room closer to our bedroom, but I think this one looks nice."
Hannah shrugged. "I hadn't really thought about it. We have a long time before we need to decide which room we'll use as a nursery."
Hannah left to get ready for bed, but Olli stayed to look over the nursery. He could see Hannah sitting in the rocking chair in the corner, holding a little bundle. He could see a little blonde toddler playing with blocks by the window. Olli may have only been 21, but he knew he was ready to have kids. He was ready to teach his son or daughter how to skate and play hockey. He was ready to go to dance recitals and parent teacher conferences. He was ready to be a dad.
