Chapter 46

Olli played with the ring on his finger, still getting used to the feeling of it, as he and Hannah waited for their chocolate croissants. He looked down at his left hand and couldn't help a smile from creeping across his face: he was married, to (in his opinion) the perfect girl. She might have had a few flaws here and there, but who didn't? They were what made her unique, and Olli loved that.

"Deux cafe, si'l vous plait," Hannah said to the waiter when he brought their croissants. He nodded and returned a few minutes later with two cups of coffee. Hannah was already peeling her croissant apart, but stopped long enough to take a sip of her black coffee.

"So, we're going to the Louvre today?" Olli asked and picked up his croissant. He wasn't sure if he should be eating all of this nice food so close to training camp, but he was on his honeymoon, after all.

Hannah nodded and set down her coffee. "Unless you don't want to."

"No, I'd love to. I mean, I don't want to spend this whole trip in museums, but we have to go to the Louvre, right?" He smiled. "I don't care if we do all the touristy/cliché things people always do in Paris. Dinner on the Eiffel tower last night was probably the coolest thing I've done in a while, and certainly the highest off the ground I've eaten. And that picture we had taken under the Arc de Triomphe of us kissing? I think we should have that framed and hung up in our new house somewhere. Maybe in the living room?"

Hannah raised her eyebrows, "Wow, I didn't expect you to be enjoying this more than me. And I'm pretty sure you ate on the airplane...so, the Eiffel tower is not the highest place you've eaten." Hannah laughed and finished up her croissant. "So, to the Louvre it is?"

By the end of the day they were tired from walking, and Olli tried to convince Hannah to get dinner at this little pizza shop they passed.

"Come on, this is Paris! We can have amazing French food, and you want pizza?" Hannah tried to pull Olli away from the pizzeria, but with no success.

"Please? It's authentic enough, I don't see anything in English on their menu."

"But we can have pizza any time back home. Don't you want something special or different?"

"You mean like frog legs? No thank you; I don't think I'll be trying that again." Olli shook his head.

"They weren't that bad; I thought they tasted a little like fish. And I know you liked the coquilles saint jacques we had last night." Hannah sighed and realized she had pushed Olli into eating all kinds of authentic French food because she had wanted this to be perfect, but never asked if he liked any of it. "Okay. Just this once. And you're right, this doesn't look like the kind of pizza we can get back in Pittsburgh."

"Thank you," Olli kissed her on the cheek and led her inside, letting the familiar smell of pizza wash away the memory of eating Kermit the frog's legs.

The next day they walked down the champs elysees and spent the afternoon in the beautiful les jardins les tuileries. Hannah, again, thought of what a great filming location this would be, but tried to push that aside and instead enjoy the day with Olli. By the end of the week, they had seen as much of Paris as they could, and eaten way too much nice food. Olli was not looking forward to the start of training camp and getting back into shape, since he'd been slacking a bit over the past few weeks.

One thing he was also not looking forward to was facing the team. He knew there would be some friendly teasing about eloping over the summer, and he was sure Brandon would say something about copying him- getting married right after he did. But Olli was ready for it. Whatever flak they gave him for getting married too young, he would just smile and take it. Because nothing could bring him down right now; he was happier than ever, on top of the world.

While the preseason was starting nice for Olli, Hannah was having a harder time adjusting. Married life was suiting her well, that wasn't the problem. Her issue stemmed from the fact that she had nothing to do. She was still waiting for her film to debut, and was having trouble finding another script to take on. There was always something wrong, and in Hannah's eyes, nothing was good enough. Hannah hoped that once she got some positive feedback from her movie she would get over this and be able to see new projects with optimism.

In the meantime, she took up a position in with the Pens film crew again, except this time she was an executive producer for 'In the Room.' She had an office, and didn't have to work as much, and didn't have to travel with the team anymore; overall it was a pretty good job. However, she still felt something was missing. She wasn't chasing her dream as vigorously as she felt she should be, and sometimes she felt like she was standing still. But with so many changes in her life over the past few years, what was her dream? Olli had come into her life quietly and had somehow turned her world upside down.

If Hannah had thought Olli had turned her life upside down, then this next challenge would turn her universe inside out.

Just three games into the pre-season, it was obvious Kasperi Kapanen was a changed player. He was making plays he wouldn't have thought of last year, his shot was stronger and more accurate- overall he was more mature. He'd been through a lot and had been forced into situations that made him grow up. Now that he has moved to Pittsburgh and settled into Hannah's old apartment, things were starting to look up for him. He was finding his place on the team, making friends, and trying to fit in.

One thing that had been on his mind, drawing a bit of his attention away from hockey, was his son Finn. He refused to call him 'Kasperi Jr.' as Beth had named him. Now that the birth certificate was signed, and Finn's dual citizenship was being processed, things were settling down. Beth had returned from her 'trip' and was living on her own with the baby (and her boyfriend) in Los Angeles. It looked like her acting career might be starting to make a comeback, so she was happy about that. Hannah thought she was doing well for the first time in a while, and she seemed optimistic about Beth and Finn's future.

So when Beth asked to visit in early October, Hannah couldn't think of any reason for her not to. She would have to make up one of the guest bedrooms as a nursery temporarily, but Beth should be bringing most of the stuff she'd need with her.

"I wonder if we can just borrow a crib," Hannah suggested to Olli on their drive to work. "Since we only need it for a week or however long she's staying, maybe we can borrow one from Duper or someone else on the team who has kids."

"Sure, but you'll have to ask. I think they'd tease me too much." Olli imagined what his teammates would say if he asked about that, and didn't want to deal with the teasing that would likely follow.

Hannah shrugged; she could see nothing wrong with it. "I'll ask someone after practice."

So, after practice, she made her way to the locker room with the camera crew as usual and sought out Pascal Dupuis. 'Surely he must have an extra crib, his kids are all old enough that they don't need one anymore,' she thought as she waited to approach him. She caught him just as the media moved away and planted herself in front of him before he got a chance to get up.

"Hey, can I ask a favor of you?" She asked him.

"Sure, what's up?" Duper replied.

"I need a crib, and I thought maybe you would have a few spare cribs. Can I borrow one?"

It got quiet, and a few guys were murmuring and exchanging glances. Duper looked like he was trying to hold back a grin.

"Borrow? Why would you want to borrow one? Won't you need it longer than that?" He finally asked.

"My sister's visiting for a week with my nephew. She lives on the west coast, and I'm not sure she'll visit with us very often with the baby, so I don't really want to buy one if we only need it for a week."

"Oh, so it's not for you? We were starting to wonder if you guys had eloped because you were having a baby," he explained, still fighting a smile. "I'll see what we have; there must be one or two in the attic."

"Thanks!"

Hannah didn't know why Olli didn't want to do that; it wasn't that hard. She just asked him a simple question, and it saved them the hassle of having to buy one. Hannah didn't want to have an unused crib hanging around there house, waiting to be used. She didn't think Beth would be visiting that often, and if she did she might not even bring Finn, since traveling with kids is so hard. It would be so much easier for Hannah and Olli to visit them in LA.

As Hannah was leaving Consol she saw something that made her heart jump: Kasperi. How could she have forgotten to tell him Beth was visiting with his child in a week? Hannah swallowed and tried to slow her racing heart. She called after him and quickened her pace to catch up to where he was waiting.

"What's up?" He asked. "Is this about the apartment? Because so far I think I've paid all the bills on time, and I've been keeping it clean, and-"

"No, but thanks. It's actually about something else," she looked around and pulled him off to the side so they wouldn't be interrupted. "Beth called yesterday and said she wants to visit next week. With Finn."

She watched his greenish eyes get wider, with fear or excitement she wasn't sure. He finally blinked a few times and took a deep breath, conscious that he had been holding his breath. Kasperi slowly exhaled and tried to wrap his head around what this meant: he was going to see his son for the first time.

"Okay," he took another deep breath, as if to psych himself up. "Okay. He'll be here next week?"

Hannah nodded.

"And they're both staying with you guys?"

"Yeah, that's why I was asking Duper about borrowing a crib."

Kasperi nodded; he vaguely remembered there being some talk in the locker room about Hannah needing a crib, and some rumors speculating why she needed it. He'd never thought of this- somehow the fact that she might need it for her nephew never crossed his mind.

"How long are they staying?" He asked.

"A week. You guys have a few home games that week, so you have the whole week to see him. If you want to," Hannah added. Maybe he didn't want to see him that much? Even Kasperi didn't know, and he needed to think this over. He and Hannah parted ways and he headed home. He wanted to be alone, yet at the same time he really wanted to be with someone. But who? Kasperi scrolled through his phone and kept stopping at the space in his contacts where Satu's name should be.

Without thinking, he got up and grabbed his jacket, heading out onto the Pittsburgh streets to let the cool autumn air clear his head. Kasperi walked down the street to his favorite coffee shop and thought of maybe trying to pick up some cute girl there, but at this hour the place was empty. He ordered his usual coffee and kept walking. Being careful not to get lost in a city he was still getting familiar with, he tried not to take too many turns or stray too far from his neighborhood. After half an hour he found himself standing next to the local park. There were a few kids playing on the playground with their parents. Of all the parents, there was only one dad. He pushed his kid on the swings and she giggled. "Higher, daddy!"

Her high pitched squealing laughter drew him out of his whirlwind of thoughts. "I'm a dad," he said quietly to himself. Every time he realized it again, it was like getting hit by a wave- knocking you to the ground, leaving you soaking wet and chilled to the core.

"Are one of these yours?" A woman near him asked. He hadn't even seen her; if he had he probably wouldn't have said anything to himself out loud.

He jumped, startled at her voice, and turned to look at her. She was wearing workout clothes, like she'd been running, and had a stroller with her that she was rocking back and forth. She kept checking it- like she wanted to make sure her baby was still in it.

"No," Kasperi laughed nervously. "I have a kid, but he's too young to play here."

"How old is he? Annabelle is almost a year," she said, looking down at Annabelle again.

"Uhh he's...." Kasperi did some quick math. "About three months."

"Aww they're so cute at that age. I'm Kim, by the way," she held out her hand.

"Kasperi," he said and shook her hand.

"Nice to meet you Kasperi. I have to get her home before she starts fussing, but maybe I'll see you around here sometime."

"Yeah, I'll see you around," he said and she started jogging with her stroller again.

'I could do that,' he thought. 'I could run with Finn in a stroller. I bet he'd like that.' He left the park feeling a little better.
