Chapter 39

Hannah lay next to Olli on the sand and they slowly tanned their pale skin. She was sipping her third or fourth pina colada and thinking of how nice it was to just lay there and not worry about anything. They'd been in LA for almost a week now, since their previous plans got sidelined once Beth went into labor. She was still in the hospital recovering from her c-section, even though the doctors said she could go home yesterday. The main reason she didn't want to leave was because she couldn't name her baby.

It was-as she'd feared, and Madame Zelda predicted-a boy. It wasn't supposed to be a boy, Beth kept saying. She didn't want to see it, not even once it got cleaned up and bundled up in a blanket. She didn't like the blue hat they put on him. Lucy tried to get Hannah to talk some sense into Beth, but of course Hannah just got frustrated with her and left.

The second day, Beth at least held him long enough to have her picture taken with her son. She spent the rest of the day alone, sleeping, or sulking with Deryck, who had become increasingly uncomfortable around the baby. Lucy had tried to get her to discuss names. The nurses kept asking what to put on the birth certificate, but she said she didn't care.

So by the end of day three, Lucy was at her wits end with Beth and called Hannah.

"Get your ass off the beach and help me deal with your sister. This is seriously a problem, and the hospital room is starting to get expensive."

Hannah couldn't remember the last time her mom had sounded that mad at Beth, so she dragged Olli away from their pina coladas and back to the hospital. She was ready to give Beth an angry speech about responsibility, and how she'd chosen to keep the baby so now she had to live with the consequences of her actions, but when she got to Beth's room it was dark. The curtains were drawn, and the light was off, so Hannah knocked gently.

"Hey," Beth said and turned on the light next to her bed. She didn't have any makeup on, and her hair was a mess. She was so unlike the Beth Hannah was used to seeing. She and Olli sat down next to the bed and Beth sat up a little.

"He's over there, if you want to see him," she gestured her head toward the corner. There was a bundle of blankets in a clear crib on wheels. Hannah felt a pang of guilt that she hadn't seen him yet, but at the same time she was terrified of holding a baby. She couldn't remember the last time she had held one, and the thought of cradling a tiny human being in her arms made her hands shake.

"Olli, can you-" He stood up without her needing to finish her sentence, and picked up the tiny baby like a pro, as if he'd done it a thousand times. It looked so small in his arms, and the second Hannah saw them she knew it was right. Her breath caught in her throat and a thousand images of Olli holding a baby, teaching it to walk, playing catching catch in the back yard, flashed through her mind.

"Do you want him?" Olli asked and sat down next to Hannah again.

"Okay," she whispered, still caught up in seeing her adorable 20 year old fiancé holding a baby. Olli carefully handed the tiny infant to her and Hannah felt her heart speed up. She looked down at his tiny wrinkled face, a few wisps of light hair on his head. He made a cooing sound and blinked before opening his eyes. Even in the dark room she could tell they were green, like hers. She felt her heart melt as his little mouth opened and he yawned. "Oh my God," she said quietly and looked back at Olli to see him smiling back at her. "We have to find a name for this little guy."

Instead of complaining or being difficult, like Hannah thought she would be, Beth sullenly replied "I know."

"Don't you have any boys' names that you like?" Hannah asked, and Beth's face remained unchanged: sad and unfeeling.

"I don't know."

"What about making him William the fifth? Dad would love that," Hannah smiled, but Beth had no reaction.

"Yeah, that's what mom said, but I don't know...."

"Well, it's better than nothing, which is what he's called now. He needs a name," Hannah said, a little more sternly this time, and the baby started fussing. She handed him to Beth, but she held him like he was an uncomfortable, foreign object.

"I was thinking I'll name him after his own father," Beth said as she absently pulled her shirt down enough to feed him.

"That's a good idea, but...." Hannah exchanged a worried glance with Olli before continuing. "Shouldn't you find out who that is first?"

"It's Kasperi, I told you that."

"But what if he isn't? That might be awkward," Hannah said and tried to laugh, but Beth continued staring blankly at the wall. "I'm just concerned because Deryck said-"

"Deryck doesn't know what he's talking about," Beth interrupted her, showing the first sign of emotion since they'd gotten there. She looked down at her son and almost smiled. "I don't need a paternity test to know this is Kaspy's. Look at that nose...."

Hannah and Olli had both noticed the similarities between Kasperi's nose and the baby's, but he was only three days old and most babies had cute noses.

"You should still get a test done. I think you need to if you want to list him as the father on the birth certificate. Have you even talked to him? We've tried calling him a few times, but he isn't answering." Hannah shot Olli another worried glance. "Okay, well, maybe by tomorrow you'll have come to some kind of conclusion on his name," Hannah stood up, not really sure what else they could do. "We're going to head back to the beach, I'll send mom in on my way out."

She and Olli left the hospital feeling a mixture of stress and annoyance with Beth, yet there was the lingering feeling of 'aww' of having seen the other one looking so cute holding a baby. Olli could not get over how much the baby's eyes looked like Hannah's, and Hannah was pretty sure her ovaries exploded the second she saw Olli with the baby. Any doubts she'd had about some day having children were erased, for now at least. She could already see him teaching their future child how to skate, and hold a stick, or playing tag in the backyard of their new house.

Caught up in these dreams, they almost forgot about Kasperi. They tried calling him one more time that night, and Hannah texted him that Beth was planning to name the baby after him, but still no reply.

The next morning, their brunch on the beach was interrupted by a frantic call from Lucy.

"Mom, calm down. What did she do?" Hannah held her phone away from her ear as her mom screamed about Beth again. "Never mind, we'll be right over."

It was almost noon by the time Hannah and Olli got to Beth's apartment. Hannah was shocked to see Beth sitting in a rocking chair with the baby, Deryck nervously sitting by her side.

"You didn't actually name him Kasperi Jr., did you?" Hannah asked, hoping Beth wasn't really that stupid.

"Well, no," Beth paused. "I don't know Kaspy's middle name, and I couldn't use his last name, so he isn't technically 'junior,' but his first name is Kasperi."

Hannah stared at Beth in disbelief. "Why. We talked about this."

"And I told you, I know this is his son, I don't need a test to tell me that."

"And is he listed as the father on the birth certificate?"

"No, they wouldn't let me do that without him present, or his signed consent, so....it's listed as 'unknown,' but I can change that once we have proof."

"So you are getting the paternity test?"

"No, and hush. You know little Kaspy can hear you," Beth whispered angrily.

Hannah was so angry at Beth that the only thing keeping her from smacking her was the tiny baby in her arms. "This is not good, Beth. You know this isn't going to end well!"

"I don't know what you're talking about. Deryck is going to help me, since he's my boyfriend now. We'll be fine." She tilted her head, as if to say 'thanks for all the help but you can go now,' so Hannah left.

"There are literally not enough words to describe how mad I am at her! She is being so stupid!!!" Hannah glanced at Olli, who had been rather quiet. He nodded, but didn't add anything. "This is not going to end well. And did you see what she picked for his middle name?"

Olli shook his head.

"Finn. Can you believe that? Because she thinks he's Finnish. Finn isn't even a Finnish name!"

"Why don't we get a drink or something?" Olli wrapped his arm around Hannah and tried to calm her down.

Hannah agreed, however it wasn't a drink she needed. She pulled Olli up to their hotel room to blow off some steam, and he made sure she forgot about Beth, babies, Kasperi (both of them), and pretty much everything else.

Two weeks after returning to Pittsburgh, they had still not heard from Kasperi. Olli tried talking to a few friends in Finland that might know Kasperi, but they still couldn't get a hold of him. Hannah felt more and more guilty about getting Kasperi into this situation, and now that she couldn't reach him, she worried that he'd done something extreme. She knew he was alive, and that was it.

"Prospect camp is next week," Hannah said to Olli at breakfast. "Should we offer to let him stay with us? So he doesn't have to stay in a hotel by himself?"

"Maybe," Olli was reluctant to let Kasperi stay in their house again. Last time they all lived under the same roof things hadn't ended so well. "Or, he could stay in the apartment in town. It's closer to Consol anyway. Besides, none of our guest bedrooms are set up yet."

Hannah nodded. Most of the house was surprisingly in order, since they had spent the last two weeks packing, moving, and unpacking. It made it easier that they were not moving very far. However, living in a bigger house meant they had more room to fill, and shopping wasn't exactly Hannah's favorite thing. She and Olli had wandered through countless furniture stores trying to figure out what their 'style' was, or if a certain chair matched the theme of the dining room, if it even had a theme.

"We still need to decide which room is going to be a guest bedroom, and which one will be a nursery," Hannah added quietly. "Not that we need a nursery, but it's good to plan ahead, while we're still moving things in and stuff."

Olli nodded. He knew what she meant, and he didn't want to talk about it either. They had a kind of tacit agreement regarding their future children: it was going to happen at some point, but they didn't need to talk about it now more than necessary. Ever since they'd held baby Kasperi, something had clicked. Sometimes, it's not until you see your significant other holding an adorable baby that you realize you want that, that you need it, and start pointing your life in that direction. For Hannah, it was the moment that pushed her over that mental barrier that kept her from actually wanting kids, but for Olli it only confirmed what he already knew.

Leaving the subject at that, Hannah left the table and wandered off to her office, and Olli left for his morning run. Hannah sat in front of her computer and tried to read through some of the scripts the production office gave her, but Kasperi floated around her head like a blaring distraction. Finally, she closed her laptop and took out her phone. She called him, one last time, before moving to the next level. She'd considered trying to contact his parents somehow, but this....this was far more desperate than that. She scrolled through the pictures she'd taken of baby Kasperi and found one that Olli had taken of her holding it.

She sent it to him alone, without any explanation. It was clear enough who it was.
