Chapter 33
"This is my last interview ever!" Hannah smiled brightly as she sat down next to Geno. "And I'm so honored that you're my last interview."
"Really?" He turned to her with a grin.
"No, not really. But I'm happy it's you and not someone stupid, like Brandon," Hannah teased and Brandon shot her a look.
"Why not with your boyfriend?" Geno asked and gestured to Olli across the room.
"I'll still see him after I leave, I just won't be here anymore. Toronto's not that far; I'll visit often," Hannah smiled, and moved out of the way for Geno's interview to start. She was actually sad to leave the Penguins, despite how reluctant she was when she first started working here.
Olli met her in the film office with flowers before they headed to the airport, saying goodbye to a few teammates first. Hannah gave Brandon an extra long hug before wishing him a merry Christmas and punching him in the arm.
Olli was nervous as they flew to Finland. They would get there early the morning of the 24th so he hoped they could get some sleep on the plane. Hannah fell asleep right away, since she'd been very busy lately trying to get things together for the film. He hadn't seen her too much over the past month. Even when she was home, she was on the phone with the producers in Toronto, or in front of her computer. No matter how much she worked, she still felt there was a lot to do before filming began next month. She needed this break as much as Olli did.
Hannah was not expecting it to be as cold or dark as it was when they landed in Finland. Perhaps it's because they had flown in from Florida, but she was not prepared. Olli took off his scarf and wrapped it around her neck when he saw she was shivering, despite her winter coat, hat, and mittens.
"Is it night time?" She asked as they walked out of the airport.
"No, it's always this dark this time of year," Olli smiled. When they got to his house, his mother was so excited to see them, but they were tired so they went to bed. They woke up just in time for Christmas Eve dinner, which Hannah was very excited about. She was very interested in eating some traditional Finnish food.
Olli was quiet during dinner. His father took him aside after and talked to him quietly. Olli was usually a bit more talkative after a few drinks, but this time it made him more quiet.
"I'm going to get the sauna ready. We might be up late, with the time difference and stuff," Olli explained to his father Juha, while Hannah chatted with his mom about recipes (which Olli knew Hannah didn't care about, but he liked that she was trying to get along with his mom.)
Olli and Juha left, and Olli's younger brother Ville wandered after them. Alone with Olli's mom for the first time, Hannah suddenly felt uncomfortable and didn't know what to talk about.
"So, has Olli always been good at cooking, or does he just do that to impress me," she said.
"Olli? Cooking?" Minna laughed, so Hannah laughed with her. "No, Olli must have picked that up when he was living with his billet family in London. Why, does he do much cooking?"
"He does most of the cooking actually. I'm not very good in the kitchen, but he's taught me a few things."
Minna looked thoughtfully at Hannah for a moment. "He is so grown up now; I still see him as this little kid out playing hockey, or baseball, but now he's in the NHL, and playing in the Olympics, and he has you..."
Hannah wasn't quite sure what she meant by that last part, but Minna was smiling, so she smiled too. When Olli called her from the back, Hannah gladly left, having run out of things to talk about with his mom.
"Have you ever been in a sauna before?" Olli asked when Hannah found him.
"No, but I know it's hot."
"It's very hot," Olli smiled. They changed into towels and he led her toward to the sauna.
"Are you sure?" He asked one last time.
"Yes; if this is as traditional and important to Finnish culture as you say it is, then yes," she smiled confidently up at him, the way she did when she wasn't quite sure what she was doing, and followed him into the sauna. It was hot, hotter than she thought it could be, and she did not hesitate to slip her towel off and lay it on the bench before sitting down.
"Now what?" she asked Olli after a few minutes, and he chuckled.
"We sit, or we can talk, or we can...." Olli trailed off, and Hannah scooted closer to him.
"Oh really? Isn't it too hot for that?" She wrapped her arm around his.
"I think this is the first time your hands haven't been cold," he said, taking one of her small hands in his. "You're no longer a jӓӓprinsessa. You're just a prinsessa, my prinsessa." Olli leaned down and kissed her cheek. Not used to finding her skin warm, he kissed her again, and again, until he was almost on top of her.
"Why don't we take this to your room?" She moved to stop him, but her hands slipped of his arms. "We are way too slippery," she giggled and slid out from under him, wrapping her towel around herself again. "Come on!"
He stood up slowly and got his towel. This wasn't exactly what he'd had in mind, but he wasn't going to turn down sex.
They slept long into the next day, and woke up just in time to see the little bit of daylight that lit up the snowy Christmas morning. After breakfast/lunch, Olli and Hannah got bundled up and headed out for a walk.
After Olli checked his pockets for the third time, Hannah asked if he was missing something.
"Nothing, just making sure I have my phone." He took her hand and they kept walking, not talking too much. After a few minutes, Hannah recognized that they were walking down the path toward the summer cabin she had taken over for the summer.
"We're not going swimming, are we?" Hannah asked jokingly, but Olli only shook his head. They reached the cabin and instead of going in, like Hannah thought they would, they walked around it, toward the lake. It was frozen and covered with snow, but they stopped right where the beach would have been.
Olli wrapped his arm around her shoulder and pulled her close as they looked out over the ice. It was quiet and serene, but cold. Hannah was starting to wish she could hop back in the sauna for a few minutes to warm up.
"This is where I first skated," Olli said, breaking Hannah out of her warm thoughts. "I had gotten my first pair of skates for Christmas, I was three and a half. My dad brought me down here and shoveled off bit of the ice so I could skate. I'll never forget that, even though it was so long ago, it was such an important part of my life. After that, I started playing hockey, and that led me to you." He paused and turned to face her, so Hannah looked up at him. "Hannah, you have given me so much meaning in my life, something outside of hockey. This past year with you has been the best year of my life, and that's not because I played in the Olympics and in the NHL." He took a deep breath and reached into his pocket to finally take out the tiny box he had been checking on, and bent down on one knee, so he was looking slightly up at Hannah. "Will you marry me?"
He looked nervous, and younger than Hannah had ever seen him. Yet at the same time, he was so mature. He had obviously given a lot of thought to this, and had been planning it for a while. Hannah smiled, and laughed, a single tear running down her cheek. She wiped it away before it froze, or got her scarf wet.
"What makes you think I'm the marrying type?" She teased as she took her glove off. "If you were anyone else, I'd say no. But you're special, and you have made me a better person. So yes, Olli Maatta, I will marry you." She held out her shaking left hand, and he grinned as he slipped the ring on her finger. "This is beautiful."
"It was my grandmother's," he said, and pulled her in for a deep kiss. "Come on, let's go inside. It's warm in there." They walked hand in hand up to the cabin, and once inside, Hannah took her glove off again to look at the ring. They sat in front of the fire under a blanket, wrapped in each other's arms.
His parents were waiting for them when they returned, eager to see the outcome. They did not ask about possible wedding dates, or any other wedding related questions, which Hannah thought was nice. She realized at some point she'd have to tell her parents, but for now she'd enjoy the quiet, unobtrusive Maattas.
There would be plenty of time to plan a wedding later, but for now they were going to enjoy this on their own.
