Chapter 30
Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for things, and this year, Hannah was thankful for alcohol.
"I can't believe you made him get a tattoo, Hannah," Lucy said after Hannah and Olli showed off their new tattoos.
"It was his idea to get one too, actually," Hannah defended, and poured herself yet another drink.
"What does it look like when you flex? I heard arm tattoo's change shape and you've got some pretty decent muscles on you." Bill smiled, and convinced Olli to roll up his sleeve. Yes, the bear did change shape a little, but they'd put it in the right spot and at the right angle so it wouldn't get too messed up.
Beth was fidgety and obviously was not paying attention to the conversation. They had barely arrived, and Hannah knew this was going to be a long night.
"Guess what Hannah," Beth said with a smile. "You're going to be an aunt!"
Hannah shot Olli a look and knew he was thinking the same thing she was: Kasperi. Hannah was starting to feel sick just thinking about it. First, her little sister couldn't be pregnant, that just wasn't allowed. And secondly, it certainly couldn't be with Kasperi. Hannah definitely was not okay with this.
"How." Was all she managed to say; her mind was going so fast, jumping from one incoherent thought to the next.
"While I was visiting you I missed one of my depo shots, so a few weeks after I returned to LA I went to get the next shot, and they said they couldn't because I was pregnant," Beth was still smiling, and their parents were smiling. They were so proud that their daughter had gotten herself knocked up.
Hannah could not hide her disgust and rolled her eyes. If they had known about her unplanned pregnancy three years ago, they would not have treated her they way they were adoring Beth now.
"Why are you not on the pill?" Hannah asked Beth.
"I can't be bothered to take a pill every day; besides, I'd probably forget it." Beth looked at her like she was crazy. After all, she had forgotten to get one of four yearly shots, so daily pills would probably be out of the question.
"What about an IUD? You get it put in and forget about it for three years," Hannah suggested, and received the same dumb stare from Beth.
"No, that's painful," Beth pouted.
"You know what else hurts?" Hannah stood up and slammed her hands on the table. "Giving birth!" She stormed out of the dining room.
Of course Beth could not have waited until after dinner to share her exciting news, so Hannah still had to sit through Thanksgiving dinner listening to her parents talk about Beth and her baby. Hannah made sure to drink enough to eventually tune them out, and after dessert she fell asleep on Olli's shoulder watching football with her dad.
Olli was not drinking much since he had a game the next day, and unfortunately remained completely aware of the entire situation. After thinking about it for a while, he texted Kasperi. He asked if he knew Beth was in town.
*Oh God no, why?
*Umm, you might want to talk to her
*Why?
*I can't tell you. Just talk to her, okay?
Olli didn't hear back from Kasperi, but soon after, Beth got a text and excused herself from the table.
*Hey Kaspy! Want to hook up later?
He hated that she called him Kaspy, but he was willing to ignore it (and many other things) due to the fact that she had incredibly long legs and the perfect butt. He was at Brandon's, but he said he could meet her somewhere that night. She told him where she was staying and said to meet her in her room at 7.
He was a little nervous to see her, since he still couldn't look at her without seeing Hannah. It was like a curse: Beth was gorgeous and beautiful in every way, yet underneath it all she was pretty dumb. And then there was the part where she looked like her sister, whom Kasperi had somehow fallen in love with. He still could not figure out why he got a boner every time he saw Hannah; she was like a forbidden fruit that he just had to have.
At seven he wandered up to the ninth floor of the hotel Beth was staying in and knocked on her door. As expected, she opened the door wearing something seductive. She loved her 'outfits' and loved to play dress up; unfortunately, anything beyond that was far over Beth's head.
"Hey Kaspy, looking fine tonight," she ran her finger down his the buttons of his shirt and led him inside. Without any further conversation, she pushed in on the bed and crawled on top of him, trying her best to be 'sexual.' Again, Kasperi reluctantly found himself wondering what Hannah would do in this situation. Just as he was imagining what it would feel like if it was Hannah's tongue in his mouth and not Beth's, she stopped.
"What's wrong?" He looked up at her as she straddled his waist.
"I want to talk to you. I feel like we never talk," she slid off him and curled up next to him on the bed, resting her head on her elbows so she could look at him.
"Okay, what do you want to talk about?" Kasperi pushed a pillow behind his head so he could look at her, although it only gave him a better view of those long legs stretched out behind her.
"I don't know, just things," Beth smiled that dumb smiled.
"What kind of things? Like, hockey? Or how the season's been going? Because that's all I've been paying attention to lately," that, and Hannah of course.
"No, I don't watch hockey...let's talk about the baby."
"W-what? The baby? What baby?" He sat up more, and he felt his heart rate speed up.
"I bet we're gonna have a beautiful baby," Beth said adoringly and traced circles on his stomach.
"Wait, what?!" He sat up and looked at her, his head was spinning and he was starting to feel sick.
"Oh, Olli didn't tell you? I'm pregnant," she smiled as she sat up and put her hand on her lower abdomen. "You can't really tell yet because it's still really tiny, but I saw it on the sonogram."
Kasperi's head was swimming. Hadn't they always used a condom? And she said she was on birth control, so how did she get pregnant? He felt sick and ran to the bathroom just in time. A minute later he felt a pair of cold hands on his shoulder, and for a second he thought it might be Hannah. For a second, his weary mind realized that the only positive outcome from this was that he might get to spend more time with Hannah.
"Silly, I'm supposed to be the one throwing up, not you," Beth laughed.
"I don't believe you," he said before coughing again. He got himself a glass of water and tried calm down.
"What do you mean? I've had a sonogram and a blood test; of course I'm pregnant!"
"How do you know it's mine?"
She rolled her eyes, exactly the way Hannah did, and it sent another wave of sickness through him. "We've been together how long? And you accuse me of cheating on you?"
"What? We were never official. When did we start dating?" Kasperi was starting to get mad now; an emotion that outweigh the gripping fear that gnawed at every nerve ending in his body.
"Are you serious? Don't say this to me. I can't handle this kind of stress in my condition." Beth put her hands on either side of her forehead and began to rub her temples.
He sat up and caught his breath long enough to start to think straight. "Oh my God I'm going to be a da-" He choked on the word dad, and muttered something in Finnish, which Beth thought was hot.
"I know, right?! You'll be part of the 'hot dads club'!"
Kasperi did not know what that was, but he did not want to be a part of it. "No, no this is bad. This is really bad. Can't you, like..."
"What?" Beth looked hurt and surprised, like a puppy that got in trouble for chewing on your favorite slipper.
"Can't you get an abortion?"
She was quiet for a minute, so he looked up at her. She was silently crying, tears running down her face.
"No, I'm sorry, of course not," he wrapped his arm around her shoulders and wondered if he could get out of this some other way. Maybe if she tripped and fell down a flight of stairs...
His conspiring was interrupted by a sudden sob from Beth. "I can't do that to an innocent little baby, who hasn't even had a chance at life. She's our baby, and I'm keeping her."
Perhaps he was going insane, but Kasperi laughed. "Her? What makes you so sure it isn't a boy?"
"A mother knows these things. You wouldn't understand, you're not a mother."
"You're right I'm not. And I've only known about it for," he checked the time on his phone and noticed he had a missed call from Olli, "about half an hour, so I think it's going to be a while before I wrap my head around it."
"You're right," Beth said with a surprising amount of maturity. "You should probably have some time to think about this."
He looked her over for a minute, not entirely believing that she had actually said something that made sense, before agreeing with her. He left and went home to try to get some sleep before the game the next day, but he tossed and turned all night. The next morning he considered talking to Brandon about it, but he didn't want to drag him into his problems.
The next day they boarded a flight for their second game against the Canes, and he tried to find a seat alone near the back of the plane. He put his headphones on and closed his eyes, but someone still sat with him. When he opened his eyes to see who it was, he was shocked to see that it was Hannah. He wasn't entirely sure he was awake, since there was no way she would have willingly sat next to him if there was another seat available.
"Listen, I know things didn't really end well for us, but I need to talk to you." She sat sideways in her seat so they were close enough that no one else would hear them talking. "You need to somehow talk Beth into taking a paternity test. There is a very likely chance you are not the father of her child since she has no idea how sex works. She's been in LA how long? Long enough for her to get pregnant with another guy."
"What? But she said she-"
"Beth is an idiot. We need to find out how long she's been pregnant, because if it's only a few weeks, then it's not yours."
Kasperi's wide, shocked, eyes stared back at Hannah. He was scared, and reluctantly, she felt bad for him. "I really don't want to do this, but you look like you could use a hug." She leaned closer and awkwardly wrapped her arms around him. He melted into her embrace, letting her cold arms securely hold him; and for a second he forgot that she hated him.
