Chapter 22

"Your mom wants to know when the two of you will be here this summer," Hannah's dad said tiredly over the phone.

It was early for him, living on the West coast, but Hannah called as soon as she got her mother's text message: 'Urgent. Please call.' Lucy still hadn't gotten the hang of texting and her messages ended up reading like telegraphs.

"That was mom's urgent message?" Hannah groaned and rolled her eyes. "Sorry for waking you up for that. I don't know; we're... still trying to figure out what we're doing this summer."

"If you could tell your mother as soon as possible, that would be excellent," Will replied with no enthusiasm.

"Ughh tell mom I will let her know when I feel like it," Hannah hung up after mumbling 'goodbye' and leaned back in bed. She hadn't slept well the past few nights since the Penguins had been eliminated from the playoffs. Olli had no interest in talking about their summer plans, but when he did, Hannah was happy that they included phrases like 'we' and 'us.'

They were a definitely couple now, but more than that; they were Hannah and Olli, Olli and Hannah ('Holli' as Beth had dubbed them). They were a pair, a unit; you didn't have one without the other, and instead of feeling trapped, Hannah felt secure.

Hannah did not mention his upcoming surgery when discussing their summer plans. She had no idea what kind of recovery would be required, or even how mobile he would be. She shuddered at the thought of spending her summer sitting next to him while recovered in bed.

Hannah snapped out of her daydreaming when she heard a sound from the kitchen. She crept down the hallway and peaked around the corner, only to find Olli making coffee.

"Oh hey," she sounded surprised. "I didn't realize you were here."

"I've been here all night." He replied without turning around.

"You must have come back pretty late, I didn't hear you come in." She slid her arms around his waist and tucked herself under his arm.

"You were asleep, and I didn't want to wake you up." He leaned over and kissed the top of her head as he slipped out of her grasp. He sat at the table with his coffee and Hannah sat across from him.

"I don't have much food, sorry, I've been kind of busy," Hannah bit her lip and felt bad about not being able to feed him anything breakfasty.

"At least you have coffee," he smiled, but it quickly faded. "My shoulder surgery has been schedule for May 22, right after I return from London."

Hannah opened her mouth to reply, but she didn't know what to say. "I'm sure it will go okay." She smiled hesitantly. "Did you want me to come to London with you?"

"No, I'm just visiting some old friends and watching one of the Knight's playoff games, it would probably be boring for," he laughed tiredly. She could tell he hadn't been seeping well; his pale skin showed the dark circles under his eyes clearly. "Besides, it's only about an hour flight, I probably won't be gone longer than a couple days."

"My mom wants us to visit at some point," she said, staring into her coffee, but glanced up to see his reaction. "You don't have to; I'll probably go back to Oregon for a few weeks anyway."

"Okay," he smiled, "but only if you come back to Finland with me the rest of the summer."

Hannah relaxed and actually laughed a little. She had been so worried that he wouldn't want to spend the summer with her, or they'd only spend a few weeks together. Especially after the bottle incident, she didn't want to seem clingy/needy/crazy or anything else. She knew he needed space after the loss, and getting over that would take time, but she was okay with that.

"I would love to," she smiled, and he smiled back, looking happy for the first time in a few weeks.

Hannah reluctantly called her mom back the next day to tell her that she and Olli would be visiting for a while, and somehow ended up agreeing to let Beth visit her in Pittsburgh. Perhaps it's because she hadn't seen Beth in a while and forgot how annoying she was, or maybe she was lonely without Olli or Brandon. Whatever the reason, she instantly regretted it when Beth arrived on her doorstep with three suitcases.

"Beth! You're only going to be here for four days, why do you need all that?" Hannah stared in shock as she rolled her suitcases in.

"Well.... I'm actually going to stay a little longer than that," Beth smiled fakely and tried to look sweet, as if that could make Hannah feel bad for her.

"How much longer," Hannah asked seriously.

"I'm not sure, maybe a few weeks? Just until everything blows over."

Hannah rolled her eyes and sighed exasperatedly. "What is it this time?"

"This time? What do you mean? I've never been arrested before, that was always you," Beth looked so confused and innocent that Hannah wanted to smack her. However, she was interested to hear more. "There was this party, in LA, where I live, remember? Anyway, there was a party, and lots of famous people were there, it was really awesome, until the police showed up for some reason. And they found some pills in my purse (oxy-something?), I don't know how they got there, maybe someone slipped them in when I wasn't looking, but..."

"So you're avoiding the police?" Hannah crossed her arms and looked disapprovingly at her sister.

"Well, not really, I'm just waiting for the charges to be dropped and the lawyers to work things out. Daddy says everything will be okay, as long as I stay out of trouble for a while." She smiled brightly, showing off her overly white, perfectly straight teeth.

"Whatever," Hannah gave up. "I'm going to Finland for the summer, so you can stay here as long as you want. As long as the apartment's in the same condition as when I left it.

"Yay!!Thank you!!!" Beth leaned down to give her a hug and skipped away to put her clothes in the guest bedroom.

The first day was okay. Beth kept to herself and spent the day reorganizing the guest bedroom, or 'her room' as she now called it.

By the second day, Beth started to test her limits. And Hannah started to wonder how much jail time she would get if she committed sororicide.

"Oh my God, your little boyfriend is so cute," Beth said and showed Hannah a picture on her phone while they were eating breakfast.

Hannah glanced at the picture (of Olli receiving his Penguins' Rookie of the Year award) and genuinely smiled because he did look pretty darn cute.

"Where did you find that?" She asked Beth. "Did you just google my boyfriend? Because that's kind of stalking."

"No, I track his tag," Beth replied, not taking her eyes of her phone.

"His tag...?" Hannah avoided social media at all cost unless absolutely necessary (like for work).

"On Tumblr. There's tons of stuff about him on here, I wonder if any of its true," Beth paused.

"Like what," Hannah asked, letting her curiosity get the best of her.

"Like, it's rumored that he has girls back in London from his OHL days that he sleeps with whenever he visits," Beth taunted with a wicked smile as she scrolled through Tumblr on her phone.

"Well, if that's true, I hope he realizes how unbeneficial that would be for his health," Hannah replied acerbically.

"Huh...?" Beth gave her a questioning stare.

"Really? You're confused? What exactly do you think I would do if I found my boyfriend cheating?" Hannah spat.

"Um...cry? I don't know," Beth looked a little scared as her (smaller) older sister stared her down.

"Let me give you a hint. Last week, I threw a bottle at his head because I thought he was seeing another girl, when he was actually at therapy for a shoulder injury. My only reason for thinking he was cheating on me was that he seemed a bit distracted and he didn't reply to my texts as quickly. Do you really want to know what I'd do if he actually was cheating?" Hannah was icy cold, yet seething hot with anger. Beth had always been stupid, but this was just too much. Without waiting for a response from Beth's horror stricken face, Hannah stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind her.

She knew it wasn't true, but she started to wonder what kind of 'old friends' Olli was visiting in London. She assumed he meant his former teammates, but he might have had a girlfriend, an ex-girlfriend, and if he was visiting her, Hannah would be perfectly okay with that. Because she trusted him.

She tried to remind herself that it was just one more day before Olli returned, and then two more days after that until they were in Finland, far away from Beth. That is, if Hannah could last three days without actually killing her sister. When she got home an hour later Beth was gone and left a note saying she'd gone shopping and wouldn't be back until later. Glad to be home alone finally, she tried to get a few things done. She watched a F1 race that she'd missed during the playoffs, she cleaned the apartment, and even tried doing yoga.

Hannah was restless with no hockey to film or edit, and no Olli or Brandon to distract her. She tried to remember what she'd done with her free time in the past, before hockey took over her life. She lay on her bed and stared at the ceiling, trying to let her mind relax, when she saw something out of the corner of her eye.

"Well hello," she said as she sat up. "I'd completely forgotten about you." She moved closer to the wall to stare at the poster for the film she wrote in college. It looked terrible, she knew that, but that's because she had a low budget and not a lot of time. However, in the right hands, it, and the rest of the movie, could look a whole lot better.

"I think it's time I finally do something with this film degree, other than editing hockey games," she pulled out her old typewriter and fed a sheet of paper through it, and started to type.
