Chapter 20
Hannah sat on Olli's bed in shock for several minutes before she fell back on the bed sobbing. 'I shouldn't have told him,' she thought, and buried her face in his pillow. She quickly fell asleep; after hours of traveling, she was exhausted.
Olli wandered around the Olympic village for a while. He was trying to make sense of what Hannah had just told him. She thought she'd been pregnant? And what if she had been? Olli couldn't think those words: he could have been a dad. He shook his head and found a bar, hoping to distract himself for a while.
The bar was the last place he should have gone. He ran into Brooks, Kuni, and a few others, and of course they invited him to sit with them, so he couldn't say no. They were talking about anything but hockey, mostly things Olli didn't want to hear about: how much they missed their families, their wives and children, how they couldn't wait to go home and see them.
"Yeah, but not without a gold medal, of course," Olli added with a laugh, trying to change the subject. They started talking about hockey again and Olli relaxed a little. But the image of Hannah holding those tests was permanently etched in his mind; the three negatives, one positive.
One positive. "It's a false positive," Hannah had explained. Olli had no idea what that meant. He took out his phone and held it low so the other guys at the table couldn't see it. He searched 'false positive' and quickly read through the first thing that came up. He sighed in relief as he finally understood what it meant. He stood up quickly and left some money on the table to cover his tab.
"I have to go, it was nice seeing you guys," he said as he left. As he walked back toward his room he stopped to pick something up, something for Hannah.

Hannah was still sitting on his bed when Olli burst through the door. She sat up suddenly, startled by his entrance. They stared at each other for a moment, each waiting for the other to start talking first.
"Are those flowers?" Hannah finally asked. Olli held out the bundle of 'flowers' he bought at a souvenir shop. They didn't have a very nice selection, and Olli knew Hannah probably didn't even like flowers.
"Yes, I'm sorry, I got these for you," he sat down on the bed near her and handed her the bouquet. "I was hoping you'd still be here, since I have no idea where you're staying, and I really wanted to apologize for leaving like that. I know that's probably not how you imagined I'd react, but..."
"No, it's my fault, I shouldn't have told you. You're already under enough stress with the Olympics, you didn't need to hear this," Hannah apologized wearily, knowing she had caused him more pain than necessary.
"You are more important to me than the Olympics," Olli said with remarkable confidence that made Hannah swoon. "I care about you more than hockey, more than playing for my country, more than playing in the NHL... Hannah, you are the best thing that's happened to me." He moved closer and cradled the side of her face with his hand. "I love you, Hannah. Don't ever feel like you should hide anything from me."
Hannah was struck by his words. Olli looked so much older, and suddenly she felt like the inexperienced, naïve, 19-year old. She looked up at him, his warm hand on her face like a security blanket, and slowly blinked tears away from the corners of her eyes. One tear escaped and slowly rolled down her cheek toward his hand; Olli brushed it off with his thumb and leaned in to kiss her.
"I love you too," she said quietly as she pulled away from the kiss.

Over the next few days, Hannah tried to give Olli some space. She knew he had some important games coming up and he needed to focus. He said he was fine, but there was something a little off in his smile. His eyes seemed more distant, like he was lost in thought. Hannah wrote it off as the stress of the Olympics and tried not to think about it. Instead, she enjoyed the fact that she got to see some of the best athletes in the world performing in person. She went to as many of the men's and women's hockey matches as she could, wearing her Maatta jersey when Finland played.
It was nice to relax and just watch a game, without worrying about camera angles or anything like that. She actually got into the games, something she didn't usually do. She had never been a hockey fan, but she knew enough from working with the Penguins the last year and a half to know what was going on. After Finland's 8-4 win over Austria, in which Olli got a goal, Hannah felt more confident about team Finland's outcome. Olli got another goal and two assists in their next game against Norway. Hannah was very proud of Olli and stopped worrying that she had scared him. However, Olli felt he was actually playing better because of what Hannah had said. In some way, having to face the fact that his girlfriend might have been pregnant made him realize what he actually wanted in life. Instead of being terrified (like he thought he would be) he was, in a way, happy.
He had never thought about whether or not he'd wanted kids, mostly because that wasn't something he'd had to think about. He was so focused on his hockey career and getting to the NHL that he didn't really think about what he'd do after he got there. And now that he was playing in the NHL, and in the Olympics, he had a lot to figure out. Now that he had Hannah, he realized exactly what he wanted from his future.
Hannah was completely oblivious to Olli's thoughts, and if she'd know how he felt, she would have been surprised. Despite being older and having faced this situation before, she had no idea what she wanted in life. She was almost 24, yet the only thing she was sure of any more, was Olli. Hannah was mercurial and changed her mind as often as the seasons. She'd been through so many different 'phases,' like her hipster phase, and her tomboy skater phase, that she worried this was just the next phase, or if it was the real thing. Whatever it was, she liked it.
Finland's close overtime loss to Canada put them in a quarterfinal match against Russia. Hannah joked with Olli that the Russia/Finland game was going to be like the Winter War all over again.
"You remembered," Olli chuckled, a bit surprised. He'd told her that how long ago?
"Of course; it was fascinating, so I looked it up on Wikipedia. Let's hope the outcome is the same, except with less casualties," Hannah added with a smirk. "Actually, no casualties at all would be great."
And, just like the Winter War of 1939/1940, Finland defeated Russia in a 3-1 win. This knocked Russia out of the competition, and while Hannah felt bad for Russia and Geno, she was thrilled that Olli had a chance at a medal. Which medal he would play for was decided in the next game against Sweden. The game was close, but Sweden beat their Scandinavian neighbor 2-1, leaving Finland to play the US in the bronze medal game, while Sweden fought Canada for gold.
This was the first time Hannah felt slightly torn. As an American, she should cheer for team America, yet she was sporting her Maatta jersey, sitting with Olli's family and several other Finns. She found herself half cheering for the US in the first period, which ended scoreless.
She hoped it would be a close game, so she could cheer for both sides equally. However, as the game continued, she started to feel bad for team America as team Finland scored goal after goal. The final and fifth goal was scored by Olli on a power play, as the game wrapped to a saddening close for team America. Not only had they lost, they had not scored a single goal.
Hannah cast away any guilt she might have had for cheering against her country's team and celebrated Finland's bronze medal like it was gold. Watching Olli get his medal was the proudest Hannah had ever felt for anyone. His mother leaned over and hugged Hannah, saying something in Finnish she didn't understand. Hannah made a mental note to try to learn a few words in Finnish. After all, Olli had learned English, so she could probably learn Finnish, right?
After celebrating with the team, Hannah snuck Olli back to her hotel room. It wasn't a very nice room, but at least she didn't have a roommate, like Olli did. It was nearly 1 AM, and they had both been drinking, so it didn't take long before they were on her bed, picking up where they'd left off a week ago, when Hannah first arrived in Russia.
The next day they watched the gold medal game between Canada and Sweden with anticipation. They were both cheering for Sid and Kuni mostly, but they were pretty happy when Canada beat Sweden 3-0. Sadly, they had to leave soon to return to Pittsburgh. After the closing ceremony, they flew back to States together. On the long plane ride, Olli kept wanting to tell Hannah something, but he couldn't figure out how to say it. She kept trying to apologize, but each time he said he was 'okay.'
"Come on, Olli, there's no way you're okay after hearing something like that. I'm sorry, I should have found a way to tell you better, or-" Olli interrupted Hannah with a kiss.
"Hannah, I mean I'm okay with you saying that; I'm okay with you thinking you were pregnant, and I'm, almost....happy," he explained, and Hannah starred back at him, her eyes wide and confused. "I mean, I didn't know it until after it happened, but I was in a bar and talking with a couple of older teammates. They were NHL players, playing in the Olympics with the best athletes in the world, yet they just wanted to see their families. And I realized I wanted that; I wanted to have something back home to miss."
"You...you want a f-family?" Hannah stammered, completely surprised by Olli's confession.
"Not like, right now, but maybe, sometime, in the future," Olli explained quickly, reacting to Hannah's blank, confused stare.
Hannah giggled, almost like a little girl. "You are 19 years old! One slight pregnancy scare and you start planning a family? Please tell me you haven't picked out names?" Hannah gave him a teasing smile, and he blushed.
"I'm sorry, you just kept asking if I was okay, and I just wanted you to know that I am actually okay. I'm better than okay!" Olli was beaming, smiling brighter than when he won his medal. "And no, I haven't picked any names."
Hannah smiled a crooked, confused, grin, and looked up at Olli. "So you're okay."
