Talents

Katara couldn't sleep when they went back to the hideout as everyone went to bed when the sun went down, Aang was snoring with his body sprawled out on lees bed, lee was asleep on the ground with a book over his chest that he was reading, and Suki was tucked under the blankets and her back to the boys.

She sat where she's seen lee sit so many times to smoke or to think when they had time to spare.

She can't believe it's been a week since she ran away. Seven nights she's slept on the streets. Seven days she's been without a home. The strange thing was, she doesn't regret it yet.

Playing with the short brown hair that tickled her neck, did her family know by now she was missing, run away, whatever they wanted to call it.

"Oi?"

Katara let out a small gasp seeing lee now walking over to her as he was taking out a cigarette and his lighter.

"Hey," she nodded as he sat with her on the large window.

"How's the concussion?" He lit the stick and leaned back against the edge.

"Hurts pretty bad," Katara smiled softly looking across the creek behind the building they hid at.

"You'll be okay, you should be resting then," Lee blew out smoke from his lips and a little from his nose.

"It's fine," she whispered shrugging.

It got quiet as the sound of creatures of the night echoed outside, there was comfort in their silence but they both wanted to ask questions they weren't sure if they were allowed to ask.

"Henry was worried about you, said something about someone name Jet," Lee asked anyways.

"Oh, that slipped out," Katara looked down at her knees disappointed.

"Are you doing okay? Mentally?" He sounded more worried now.

"Honestly better than ever in a long time," she assured him.

"Can I ask you a personal question then?" Katara raised a brow.

"Can I ask you on after?" He hummed. She nodded smiling.

"Do you know where your family is? Like with being a runaway and all, how they are or what they're doing?" Katara gulped a little playing with the ends of her sleeves.

"I have a sister, she's the only one I know what she's up too now but we're not close, but my dad I have no idea, I don't want too," Lee flicked the cigarette with a shrug.

"Is she a runaway too?" She asked.

"No, but she knows her ways around the streets here," he didn't seem to care very much about his family. Katara had to remind herself that they all have a reason they're here now.

"What's your real name?" Lee asked calmly now.

"Your not going to use it are you?" Katara pursed her lips.

"No, I'm just curious if it's Katherine," he smiled.

"Will you tell me you're?" She asked almost hopeful.

"No, no one calls me it, and less people that know, better luck I have staying away from those I don't want to find me," Lee inhaled a breath of his cigarette.

"Will you use another name when you leave New York? When you, Suki and Aang leave?" Katara bit her lip a little and Lee thought about it for a moment.

"Yea I probably will," he nodded.

Katara looked outside once again as they fell into silence.

"Thank you, for taking me in like youve been doing, I don't know if I'd make it if it wasn't for you guys, if it wasn't for you Lee," Katara sighed pushing her hair to the side embarrassed at the sappy moments.

"You should really thank Aang for that then," Lee corrected.

"No, You too, you were the first person that saw I wasn't in a good situation, first person that saw me and that's when I realized how bad it truly was," she glanced around the abandoned building, seeing if Suki or Aang was awake.

"You told me you saw how he treated me, it probably didn't mean much to you but I meant a lot to me, a lot of people at school thought he was a great and wonderful boyfriend, no one listened to me," she whispered for only lee to hear.

"Youre welcome then, I wouldn't want anyone to be in a shit situation and feeling like there's no other way to life, it's suffocating," he nodded putting out the cigarette on the ledge of the window.

"we're all family here," Lee mumbled softly.

Katara smiled kindly, him and Aang felt like they were as close as brothers, Suki treated them both like brothers and they cared for her like a sister. She wondered how long it would be till Ty Lee came back, where she goes during these times. Katara hoped she was safe.

"So do you have any special talents?" Katara asked curious.

"Hmm, I can play the piano, violin, and tsungi horn," Lee offered.

"The tsungi horn?" She was surprised.

"My uncle made me learn in middle school unwillingly," he stuck out his tongue cringing.

"And the other two?" She was interested.

"My mom taught me piano, and my sister and I played violin for whatever competitive reason," he shrugged.

"Did your mom play herself for a while? Or did you learn together?" Katara wanted to keep the conversation going, neither of them were tired, neither of them could sleep.

"She played and I always followed her around, sat on the bench and watched her play till she just started to teach me, it was our thing," Lee looked down at his hands with a smile, Katara could see how touched he was by the thought of his mother, his smile was warm.

The cold serious exterior melted away back into a teenager who was like her, a boy that had a life that wasn't on the streets, he had a family and a home, parents and a sister. A time where he wasn't a protector or a runaway from gangs and cops. She wondered if it was the time he got his scar was when that little boy turned into Lee.

"We should find a piano, I'd like to hear you play," Katara nudged him with her foot.

"It's been a long time, I don't know if I'll remember much," he kicked her back softly.

"I'd still like to hear you play lee,"she giggled.

"Do you have any special talents?" Lee changed the topic shaking his head.

"I'm double jointed in my elbows and hands, and I can do a standing back stand," Katara hummed proudly and he chuckled.

"You'll have to show me," he teased.
