Freeing
Katara woke up the next morning as the sun was rising, she was in a bed? Was it all a dream? Was she home again? Did that mean Sokka was back home? She didn't want to open her eyes it was quiet today, she was so exhausted.
But it wasn't her home.
Katara forced her eyes open as it was just the break of dawn, sun peaking through the broken windows of the train station, she was sleeping on a bare mattress with a blanket and saw that kid, Aang, sleeping on the other mattress that was the other teen, Lee.
She sat up rubbing her head and felt the ends of her hair. It was so short. She missed her long hair so much.
"Your hair looks nice short,"
She looked up wide eyes seeing lee sitting at the window with a cigarette as he was already awake. She looked back over at his bed and realized he wasn't in the bed. Just Aang snoring away.
"Did you do that before or after you ran from your boyfriend?" He flicked his cigarette end before bringing back to his lips.
"So you do remember," Katara crossed her legs looking down.
"I knew as soon as I saw you at the park, short hair surprised me though," he looked at her with his scarred face being all she could see.
"Katara right?" Lee smirked at her as smoke crawled past his lips and nose.
"How-" "your boyfriend. He kept saying your name when he yelled at you," he dropped the cigarette and stepped on it before getting up from the window.
"Kats a good cover name, almost as good as mine,"
Katara smiled a little at him, she didn't care but for some reason it was kind of nice someone to know her name.
"Lee isn't your real name?" Katara asked with a smile.
"Nah, but when you look Asian people will believe it," he chuckled and sat on the end of the mattress with her.
"Why did you change your name? Are You running from someone too?" She asked pushing her short hair off her face.
"Yea, when I went to the streets I shaved my head and changed my name, best I ever felt," Lee nodded, he saw her smile more at that. They were a bit alike in that.
"You don't have any family you would've gone to instead of being homeless?" Katara looked down a little.
"My uncle, but he lives in Japan and when your a kid with no money it's really hard to get out of the states," Lee explained glancing at her.
"Yea, no passport either," she nodded.
"Never had a passport," he shook his head.
"No?" Katara was surprised by that.
He didn't answer that. She wondered why, a passport was silly to not have but something with Lee seemed deeper than just parents forgetting to get their son a passport. Maybe it was because of his scar that made her think that.
"You don't have to stare at my scar," Lee called her out. He looked unamused.
"Sorry I wasn't staring, I just didn't see it last time and-" Katara covered her mouth to stop her from talking anymore.
"It's fine, I have people poke and question it all the time, it was a childhood accident," Lee waved her off seeing her all flustered.
"What happened?" She asked thinking it might've been a funny story.
"Fell off my bike and scrapped my face on cement," Lee looked away calmly.
"Wow kind of bad ass," Katara smiled at him and Lee raised a brow but chuckled again nodding.
"Baddest kid on the block," he nodded.
Lee got up and left the room without another word as Katara pulled her hood up over her head feeling chilly in the morning air. She looked around the shared main room with Suki and ty Lee sleeping in the same bed looking exhausted still. She wondered how long they've all known each other? If they helped each other out living on the streets like they're helping her out. Or if they knew each other before?
She was curious to know their history, how they all ended up in the same place. But if lee kept his word she'd be gone at the end of the week.
Katara laid back down in the bed with a sigh. Where was she going to go? Would she have enough money to get to Gran Gran? Is Jet out there looking for her already? She wondered if he told anyone she left, or if he had to much pride to say his girlfriend rather run away to being homeless than stay with him.
She didn't want to live in fear of Jet finding her.
Two more years. Maybe she could do this for two more years and then get an apartment in another state.
She could move to a whole other state and be homeless there or find a shelter. Find someone that would help her. She didn't know what to do.
Or maybe lee will let her stay, he seemed to be the one that is considered the leader. Or maybe it's Suki? Or both?
"You want me to fix your hair? It looks jacked up," Katara heard from the side and saw Suki was awake now and was putting on a different shirt from wearing a hoodie.
"Oh um sure, it's not the best," Katara blushed embarrassed of her hair as she took her hood off and ran her fingers through it.
Suki went to the corner of Lee's and went through his stuff to find a pair of scissors.
"Come over here," she jumped up on the windowsill where she would be leveled with the back of Katara head.
"Is it cool if I cut it shorter a bit? Little longer than my hair but the bottoms kinda fucked up," Suki picked around Kataras hair seeing the bottom had some shelving.
"Do whatever," Katara sighed crossing her arms and looked down so Suki could cut around her neck.
"How long was your hair before?" Suki asked as she started to cut.
"Close to my waist," she closed her eyes.
"Damn, big change, do you like it short?" Suki whistled impressed.
"Not really, I miss my hair long," Katara gulped. "I just couldn't stand myself anymore so in the moment I just chopped it all off,"
Suki paused with pity, she understood the value a woman has with long hair, to some women it's their safety blanket, it makes them feel good, and kat chopped it all off just because of whoever or whatever made her life feel like it wasn't hers anymore. And chopping all her hair off was the only thing she could control.
"I think you look beautiful either way, short hair makes you look super cute, especially with all your waves you got," the red head smiled gently.
"Reminds me of those girls at the beach with the wavy beach hair," she snipped some more off.
"I've never had my hair short before, I feel so bare," Katara laughed a little.
"Yea but it's also so freeing," Suki nodded.
