Inexplicable Attraction | Christmas Special: LizKai
[As requested by PokemonRio .]

He didn't know when it began.

Maybe it was when she visited when Saito wasn't around; her short red hair cropped close to her chin bobbing up and down whenever she laughed at his clumsiness, her azure eyes sparkling with genuine mirth. Or was it when they first met, two six-year-olds with no care in the world, socializing only due to their parents' interference?

He didn't know, and it irritated him deeply. Dracule Kaito wasn't one to pass up the opportunity to discover the root of his confusion, after all.

So this was why he was sitting on a bench with a book open in his lap, waiting for a certain redhead to appear.

"Sorry I'm late, Kai!" A voice called, a flurry of snow covering his precious book as the figure skidded to a stop in front of the ravenette. He blinked, propping up his glasses with a hand as he looked up at the newcomer; the tiniest amount of crimson creeping up his cheeks.

"It's fine.. Liz." He looked away, brushing off the snow before it could melt upon the pages of his book before snapping it shut.

Elizabeth le Roux looked at the book in his hands, all the color draining from her face as she realized that a few droplets had soaked the pages. "Sorry..."

Kaito glanced at his companion, offering what he hoped was a reassuring smile. "It's fine, really. I was about to finish reading it, anyway." He placed a hand on her shoulder, the blush upon his cheeks intensifying at the contact. "Shall we go?"

Liz looked up at him, smiling all the same. Without any implication of the reason behind her actions, she reached out, taking his hand in hers as she proceeded to walk towards the shopping district; her ankle-high boots buried in the snow.

"Hey, wait!"

"That was fun!" Liz grinned, resting her head against the taller male's shoulder. He looked away, tugging his scarf up to cover his nose and mouth - not from the cold, exactly, but to hide the blush upon his cheeks.

"Hey, Kaito," he glanced down, only to see the petite redhead smiling slightly at him, a similar blush upon her cheeks. "Thanks for today."

His purple eyes softened, as he smiled back at his childhood friend. Her parents were out of town, both traveling the Grand Line regions, leaving Liz in the care of the Dracule family for the holidays. He wondered why she didn't go with them in the first place.

"It's no problem, Li--"

Her lips met his in a brief kiss, resulting in the Dracule heir to stiffen in his seat. She pulled away mere seconds later, laughing softly.

"Wh-what was that for?" Oh God, I stuttered. Damn it. Kaito thought, averting his gaze. Her musical laughter met his ears, as she placed a hand over his own.

"Honestly, for such a genius, Kai, you can't figure out why I chose to be left behind for Christmas?" She laughed, her fingers brushing his dark hair away from his eyes.

"It's to spend time with you, stupid."

His eyes widened in surprise as she tugged him close, placing a gentle kiss on his forehead. "I love you, Kaito. Merry Christmas."

"I love you too," he whispered, placing a hand on her cheek as he leaned in, pressing his lips to hers. "Liz."

Well... At least now I know the answer.
