Chapter 15

Katniss P.O.V.

"We had a deal!" I yell as I bardge into Coin's office. Her and Plutarch both look up at me with surprised looks on their faces.

Coin takes a deep breath and looks up at me.

"I take it Peeta told you about our conversation."

"Of course he told me. Did you honestly think that he wouldn't tell me?" My hands are clenched at my sides as my blood begins to boil even more.

If I weren't pregnant, I'd lean over this table and slap her as hard as I could across her face.

"Well, I've made my decision so there's really nothing you can do about it," Coin tells me as if she honestly thinks that I won't fight back.

"Peeta is my husband. I am not letting you do this without…"

"Without what?" Coin interrupts me. "Retaliation? A fight? I don't know if you realize this or not Ms. Everdeen..."

"Mellark," I say through gritted teeth as I take a step closer to her. Coin just ignores me and continues to talk.

"…but you are in no position to be making demands," Coin finishes. "Yes, we had a deal. I get Peeta rescued from the Capitol safely for you, and you do the films for me in return. I've stuck to my end of the deal, and so have you. At no point did you say that I couldn't do this without breaking our deal."

"You should have known!" I yell as I slap both of my hands down on the table. "You're supposed to be smart! You should have known that this would break our deal without me having to list everything that…"

"Our deal is not broken," Coin interrupts me again.

"Excuse me?" I say. "You think that I'm still going to help you?"

"I don't think you understand that there's nothing you can take from me," Coin says. "The only thing I can lose is this rebellion, and I know you can't stop it nor do you want to. But you? You have a family to lose from all of this."

"Are you threatening my family?" I feel like I'm ready to pounce at her.

"I'm not threatening anybody," Coin tells me calmly. "All I'm saying is that you deciding not to help with this isn't going to hurt me in any way at all. But think about what would happen to your child if this uprising were to never happen."

I look over at Plutarch for some help, but I can tell by the look on his face that he wants no part of this.

"What is so wrong with my decision anyways?" Coin asks me. "Peeta would be helping the rebellion."

"There's plenty he could do to help besides this," I say. Desperation is starting to creep into my voice.

"Like what?"

"Anything but this!" I yell as tears start flowing down my face.

"There is nothing else."

"You're going to send Peeta to the Capitol to fight with the other soldiers, and you're telling me that there's nothing else he can do to help? I don't believe you for even a second."

Coin opens her mouth again, but I cut her off before she can even begin.

"Peeta's not well enough."

"It will be a couple more weeks before any of the soldiers are going to be trained well enough to be sent to the Captiol."

"I didn't mean just physically. Peeta is not mentally himself. He will be fine one moment and so happy, then it's like he suddenly can't remember certain things."

I stop and grip onto the edge of the table as a dizzy spell hits me.

"Please," I beg as tears fall down my face. "Don't send him."

"I have no other choice."

I take a deep breath and point my finger directly at Coin.

"We're not done talking about this just yet."

I turn and leave the room before I get sick all over the place. I take off down the hallway as fast as my five and a half month pregnant belly will allow me. I bump into someone when I round the corner, and they barely catch me before I hit the ground.

"Katniss!" Peeta says as he pulls me back to my feet. "Where'd you go? You had me worried because you just left without saying anything."

I start sobbing, and Peeta takes my face between both of his hands.

"You can't. You can't." I sob as I shake my head a little.

"Katniss, please calm down," Peeta says to me softly. "It's okay."

"I… I went to talk to Coin to try to talk her out of it, but she won't budge."

"I'll be okay, Katniss," Peeta tells me as he wipes my tears away with his thumbs.

"You can't go, Peeta. Me and the baby can't lose you again. We just got you back from Snow and the Capitol. You can't go back!" Both of my hands are clutching Peeta's shoulders, and my arms are shaking. "I love you." My voice is barely above a whisper at this point, but I know that Peeta heard me alright.

He gently pulls my face closer to his as our lips meet. Peeta holds my face between his hands as our lips part and then lock again.

"I love you too," Peeta breathes out between kisses. When we pull away, we're both panting for breath. I take a deep breath and lean my forehead against Peeta's, closing my eyes.

"Let's go back to the room so you can sit down," Peeta says.

"Okay," I say as I slowly nod my head. Peeta wraps an arm around my waist as he leads me back to our room.

"Where's Wyatt?" I ask Peeta.

"I left him with Prim so I could come find you," Peeta tells me. "You left as soon as I told you, and it scared me. I had no clue where you went and I knew you were upset."

"I'm sorry," I tell Peeta truthfully as I lay my head over onto his shoulder. "I just had to talk to Coin as soon as possible."

"Let's not worry about it all right now," Peeta says as he pulls me closer to him with his arm that's wrapped around my waist. "Let's just go rest for a few minutes."

"I'm not going to give up this easily, Peeta. Coin is not going to win this time."

"Okay. Okay. But please just give yourself time to calm down before you try to talk to Coin again. You're mad and upset and it can't be…"

I know Peeta is still talking beause I am see his mouth moving, but I can't hear a word he's saying. It's like my ears are stopped up all of a sudden for no reason. I'm hit with another dizzy spell which causes me to lose my balance.

Peeta catches me, but I can feel his arms shaking beneath my weight as he tries to keep us both upright. Eventually, Peeta can't keep me balanced any longer with his weakened arms. He gently lowers himself to his knees and lays me on the ground, keeping my head safely in his lap as he continues to talk to me.

Finally, my hearing comes back to me so I can hear Peeta frantically asking me if the baby and I are okay.

"We're fine," I reply weakly. "I just got real weak and dizzy all of a sudden."

"You need to go eat and then rest for a while," Peeta tells me. "Do you need to go to the hospital and get checked out?"

"I'm alright," I say as I slowly shake my head at him.

"Okay. Can you stand?"

I nod my head, and Peeta slowly helps me up to my feet.

"Let's go," Peeta says as we slowly start walking again.

As I lean over on Peeta for support, I can't help but think about how broken we both are. Yet, deep down, I know we're okay because we both have each other.
