Forty Seven.
They drew first blood. And in the unofficial laws and ways of war, that means I have the right to fire back. Get even with them.
Kill or be killed right?
I grab my backpack, bow and arrows, leaving everything else there.
"Go! Go! Get out! This way!" I scream rushing to the front of the pack. I look around frantically. Peeta packs up as quickly as he can. "Dayne!" I cry. "Lets go!"
He pushes past me, leading the pack, I turn back to help Peeta. "Go Katniss!" He exclaims. "Get out of here! Go!"
"No! Come on!" I say.
They're closing in on us. I fling an explosive arrow they're way, a small section of them fly apart.
"Lets go!"
I continue to shoot arrows at them, but beside me, Johanna stands still.
"Shoot!" I cry.
She mumbles a sorry and begins to shoot, my ears ring. Just myself and her stand shooting. Peeta has left to help the group.
Then I see what she saw. The men walking and shooting at us, they're perfect. Doing everything in complete synchronization.
They continue to pour out. I turn to Jo briefly. "I'm out of explosives. We really can't keep this up. We gotta catch up with the pack." I say.
"Okay." She says lowering her gun but still watching them come to us.
Suddenly one shoots and catches our attention. We see a spark around it, and both look at each other.
"Come on." I say.
We begin to run, the things on our backs and our armor heavily weighing us down.
"Which way?" She asks frantically.
"Uhm-" I grunt looking around. "I-"
"You don't know?" She asks me.
"No one told me!" I think. "Okay this way. We'll meet up with them soon."
I turn for a spilt second to check on the people chasing us. They march, all of them completely synchronized.
Whoop. Whoop.
Katniss!
Two loud cries cracking through the silent forest like a gunshot. Which can be heard every few seconds also.
"This way." I grunt.
The whoop was Dayne, the scream was Peeta. I could hear the distress in his voice.
He yells again, and again.
Another whoop. I answer. So does Johanna.
"Up this hill!" I call. "Come on."
We come over the hill, and turn the sharp corner. I run into a body, and I retract and pull my bow up.
"Hey! Hey!" I look up and find it's Peeta.
"Oh god." I whisper. I crash my lips into his, and hug him tight.
I look up from his embrace and find Dayne staring at me with hurt eyes.
"Why didn't you answer me?" He asks me softly into my hair.
"It was just easier to whoop then have to yell."
"Katniss!" Haymitch says. "Your gonna wanna see this."
I break from Peeta, still holding onto his hand, and walking over to Haymitch. I look down over the cliff, my eyes go wide.
At the foot of the cliff, the synchronized peacekeepers continue to walk. They walk into the side of the mountain, not getting anywhere.
"They're mutts." Johanna says causing us all to jump. Her arms are hanging at her sides, her brand new axe shinning in her hand. "They're mutt from the capital. They're playing games with us." She says.
"We could talk to Beetee and-"
"No." I say. "We can't do that." I shake my head. "His therapist wants him to have nothing to do with the war."
"Therapist?" Peeta asks.
"Yes. I told you that. His therapist lives with him now." I tell them. "He kind of went crazy after realization set in that he was alone."
"Wiress?" Someone asks.
"Yes. Wiress." I nod.
"Okay, well what do we do? We need a plan." Haymitch says. "They're gonna find a way up eventually, we need to do something."
I think for a minuet. "Gale's group is still coming." I say. "If we just wait it out a few more hours, we can surround them. And use a few of those bombs Gale has to finish them off."
"Do you really think that'll work?" Vanc asks.
"They're robots. Of course it'll work." I answer. "Someone get ahold of Gale." I say.
Peeta pulls out his phone and dials Gale's number.
"He didn't answer." Peeta finally says.
"So leave a fucking message?" I snap angrily. He looks at me sadly then walks off without another word.
"Damn." Haymitch says. "You okay sweetheart?"
I sign and collapse on the ground. "This is all just a lot. I wasn't ready to lead anything."
"Yes you are." He chuckles. "But your doing fine. You've got all of us. And we only lost one person."
"We lost someone?" I gasp, covering my face with my hands.
"It's fine. One person. We're almost to thirteen. We can do this."
"I'm not so sure."
"Don't sell yourself short girl on fire, we got this shit." He smiles proudly. "I wouldn't wanna be led to victory with anybody else."
***
"Alright everyone! We're gonna wait it out here for a while until the second group can catch up. Then we're gonna take out the peacekeepers and then make it to D13 by nightfall."
Peeta tugs on my leg. "Dayne and Vanc are gonna head to D13 right now if you wanna ask if anyone wants to go now."
"Slight change of plans!" I call. "Two of our people are heading there now, so if about half of you would like to head out now, please move to the left of me." I motion with my hand. "And meet up with Dayne and Vanc. They are your superiors."
More than half of our group moves to the left. I look down at Peeta. "Well have all of Gale's group also. But I don't think sending that many people with them two rookies is smart."
I nod in agreement. "Okay, since so many of you want to go, Peeta Mellark will be coming with you also."
He grabs my leg angrily. "Katniss I'm not leaving you." He growls.
"Peeta we fight about this all the time, I always win, remember?" He sighs. "I'll be right behind you. Okay? I need you to do this for me."
He thinks for a moment. "Fine."
"Good." I smile down at him. "Okay, you guys leave in ten." I say to the large mass of people. "Everyone staying back is willing to fight. Correct?"
"Hoorah!"
Hearing that screamed sort of brings me back to the first war. How Coin would make everyone yell that. It sounds almost like something a tyrant would make you do.
"Oh! And from now on, no more hoorahs. I want you guys to make the whooping sounds you hear us superiors make. Sound good!" I call.
Whoop. Whoop. Whoop.
I smirk. "Good."
I jump down off the stump I was on and look at Peeta. I straighten and tighten his body armor.
"Your handsome." I smile.
"And your insane."
"Hey that's not nice." I frown.
"Just promise you'll call if anything happens?" He asks.
"Promise."
His eyes squint, and his nose twitches which happens when he thinks. He finally sighs and nods briefly. "Okay, I want you to call me when the suns down."
"I will."
"Wait no, you should be there by then."
"Probably if everything goes right." I nod.
"Then call me in three."
"Ten-Four." I smile.
I lean in for a kiss and then pat his butt briskly. "Better get going Soldier."
"Alright Sarg." He smirks. "I love you."
I smile and kiss him again before nodding him off. I watch him as he gathers the group and begins to lead them off. Once I lose sight of him I sigh and sit down.
I rest my head on a tree base, and quickly fall to sleep.
