CHAPTER TWO

"Careful with my baby." Brittany one of my friends say as I slam the door of her car.
Brittany drives I and Scarlett to school because amongst the three of us, she's the one that hates driving the least. Also, what better way to bond with your friends than to carpool everyday with them to school?
I scowled at her as I fastened my seatbelt.

"What got your panties in a twist?" Brittany asked.
"My panties are perfectly fine the way they are." I scowled at her again for making that comment.

"Did your mom make you angry again?" She tried again, as she navigated out of my estate.
How she manages to do both very well, that is, drive and talk is still a huge mystery to me. Which is way we voted her as the driver. Brittany and Scarlett don't know why my mom and I fight, I have never told them about what happened to me and my failing health. I'm scared that they'll look at me differently and I don't want that. Some people the moment they learn of my condition, they immediately give me a free pass even if I just offended them. It's suddenly alright because of my 'condition.' I don't want anyone looking at me in pity. But it wasn't my mom that made me angry this time, it was someone else.

"It can't obviously be her mom. After studying the course of HailMase 303 for three years, that study proves that it's Mason that got her panties in a twist. If it's her mom, it's grumbling under her breath but if it's Mason it's slamming of the car door," She was sitting at the front so she faced me almost as full as her seatbelt could allow her as she stared at me with her eyes opened fully, "Am I right or am I right?" She asked.

I grunted in reply signifying yes.
Scarlett the ever dramatic one, pumped her hands in the air signifying victory then she faced Brittany and said, "If you have studied the course then maybe you'll start acting as a shrink, rather than a lost sheep." Scarlett said all but sweetly to Brittany, but not meaning it in a nice way at all.

"If I were you, I would reserve my diss till I get to school. I can drop you off and you'll trek the remaining distance." Brittany said, effectively making Scarlett squirm but we both know Scarlett was not scared at all. She was just faking it 'cause we both know that Brittany would never do that to Scarlett.
"So what did Mason do this time?" Brittany asked.

The scowl returned to my face as I narrated the story, "You know how we have calculus test fourth period? So..." I was still talking when Scarlett interrupted me, 'I have calculus third period though, just saying, not that it was important for me to say. I just wanted to get it out there. You know what, just continue with your narration.' She finally kept quiet when she noticed my glare.

"Like I was saying before I was rudely interrupted, Mason thought that by one a.m I have read enough, so he started playing music so loud and when I told him to tone it down, he said he feels I have read enough and I should get some rest. Read enough my ass! I had no choice but to than to go to bed 'cause everyone knows how Mason never backs down when he sets his mind to something." I concluded.
"If you ask me, I think what he did was good. Everyone knows you take life way too seriously, sometimes you just have to let go of the reins, not just in academics but in every aspect of your life. When you do that, you find out that you're not just an existing being bidding time to go but you are actually living." Scarlett said, not not knowing she hit home.
You see when something unpredictable happened to me, that is my cancer. I decided if I can't control that aspect of my life, I can control the other parts. I follow my schedule to the letter, yes I know what you're thinking... She has a schedule? Yes, I do. I never want anything to catch me unawares, so when unpredictable things happen it scares me that I'm not still not able to control the aspects of my life I aim to control.

But I didn't let Scarlett know that she hit the nail right on the spot, so I asked, "Have you ever ridden a horse?"
She nodded her head. I knew Scarlett has ridden a horse 'cause this year, the three of us spent our summer in Cuba. It was more of a rhetorical question.
"Do know what happens when you let go of the reins on a horse? You either die when the horse throws you off it's back or you lose the sense of direction."

Scarlett just kept quiet, I can tell she wants to argue with me and tell me that 'or rather you can be led to somewhere really amazing that'll never have known if you didn't let go of the reins.' It's just how Scarlett is, she believes in the perfect ever after but sometimes life deals you a blow that you can't help but to be pessimistic everytime.
"Brit, remember to stop by 'Coffee and me.' I need to get Mason's coffee." I remind Brit so she wouldn't go by it.
Brit drove into coffee and me, and went through their drive through. I ordered Americano for Mason 'cause that's what he likes and I know he'll order coffee latte for me.

Brittany didn't say anything but I know she wanted to say something.
"You can spill it you know." I tell her, immediately she drives out of the coffee shop. Brit isn't like Scarlett, she rarely talks. She only does when she feel is really important.
"What I don't get is why you'll get coffee for someone you're mad at. I mean I've seen the both of you do this for three years and I still don't get you guys. Plus you know both of you can just order your own coffee without the whole locker exchange."
I sighed and tried to explain, "I'm really mad at Mason. He just loves pushing my buttons and I just get easily pissed. Plus buying each other's coffee is..." I didn't finish my statement when Scarlett chorused the last part with me, "Tradition."

"Exactly! At least someone gets me. Mason and I have been doing for as long as I can remember. This tradition is almost as long as our friendship. It started one day when we both went to get coffee. I didn't know the waitress made a mistake with my order. She switched both coffee cups and we didn't know until we got to school. So when I tasted his and I was like 'This isn't my latte I ordered'  and he said that his wasn't the Americano he ordered. We then discovered our coffee was switched, so we switched it back. From that moment, it became a tradition that we'll buy each other coffee and do a locker exchange." I explained.

"You see Brit, something you need to know about Mason and Hailey's relationship which you'll know if you studied HailMase 303 is that no matter how mad Hailey is at Mason, this tradition always stands. Another thing you need to know is both of them can call each other names but the moment someone else insults Hailey or Mason with the same insults they used on each other, that person will be dealt with. Let me give an instance, can you remember when Mason was arguing with Hailey in our tenth grade and called Hailey a buffalo. Then the next day, when Hailey was passing, Shane called her a buffalo and started goofing around with it and he made most of his teammates torment Hailey. After school we saw Mason beating Shane to a pulp, then Mason was suspended for a week. I also remember when we were learning about genetics in biology that Charlotte mocked Mason's genes and said that they were confused and everyone in class started laughing. I know it was Hailey here that put that glue on Charlotte's seat and made her unable to stand up. Wasn't it you Hailey?" She turned to me.

"You should become a detective since you like questioning someone a lot." I said, effectively avoiding her question. I think everyone knew I was the one, but no one could find any evidence incriminating me.
"What I'm trying to say is... Don't mess with any of them else you'll get fucked up." Scarlett said in a sinister voice.
"Language miss." Brittany scolded her as she looked for where to park in the school's lot.
"What am I? Four? I can say whatever the fuck I want." She said deliberately using another swear word to aggravate Brittany.

Brit just shook her head. You'll think after knowing each other for three years, we'll be used to Scarlett's sass by now, but sadly it is the opposite.
Brittany finally parked the car and we got out. We walked into school together and went to our lockers.
Mason's locker was beside mine, so I put in his combination code, and the locker popped open and I carefully placed his coffee.

"I find it weird that you both know each other's locker combination. Just saying." Brittany said from beside me almost scaring the shit out of me.

"Their relationship is weird. I've come to accept it after three years, you've known them for as long as I have known them, so I think you should too and stop acting like you are just noticing her weird they're." Scarlett said beside me. How both of them finished with whatever they're doing with their lockers, and appeared beside me is what I don't know. They both are fast locker users. When everyone is still trying to understand how to go about their textbooks, they're already done and ready to go. It's one weird thing I haven't figured out about them. I guess we're all weird one way or the other.

I moved to my locker and popped it open,  my coffee latte was already in my locker. Meaning Mason was already in school. I'm going to kill him when I see him, for the trick he pulled with the music this morning. I wasn't done with getting my books from my locker when I heard a micmicked sickly sweet voice from behind me.

"Doll." The voice called.
I don't need rocket science to know who that was and trust me with my mood, I'm ready to kill that person this morning.

Till the next update which is on Friday
Bye😊🚶
