Chapter Twelve

Jumping out of the hole in the glass, Silver smiled at Scarlet with his arm held out, waiting for her. She glanced around the little prison they were once held in, not daring to miss anything about this terrible place. Scarlet fished in her pocket for her sunglasses as more color around her disappeared. It started happening more often now, but she was focused on other things which gave her the ability to brush off what was going on. Though it was scary to possibly lose her sight at any moment, she knew that with Silver along for the ride, they could achieve anything. Maybe now that she trusted him again it was time to bring the subject back up. The two of them hadn't said a word about it since they first went looking for her parents, who now stood in the same glass bubble across from her that she was working on getting out of. All she had to do was take Silver's hand. But for a moment she hesitated, leaving him standing there watching her.

"What's wrong?" Silver asked, dropping his arm to his side. "Do you need help?"

Scarlet shook her head. "No, no. It's not that. Sorry I just need a moment."

"Hold on," he responded, "You're telling me you're actually gonna miss this? I hate to break it to you, but we really don't have a moment to spare here. We have no idea when Ash is going to be back."

"Screw Ash," Scarlet scoffed, feeling the edges of the glass with her left hand. "There's something I need to tell you."

Rolling his eyes and sighing, Silver answered, "And you had to wait until after we blew up this glass to tell me? Come on, really? Can't this wait? We only have to get out of here and then you can tell me whatever you want." He grabbed her hand, pulling her forward, but she wouldn't budge.

"I'm sorry, but it can't. I need to know if you still think I'm crazy."

Silver frowned, walking back inside the glass bubble and stroked her cheek with his other hand. "Crazy? When did I ever say that? I've never thought that way about you. You're amazing and the best thing that could've ever happened to me."

"Don't you remember what I told you in the training rooms when we were first searching for my parents?" She looked across the room, sadness mixing in with her thoughts as she stared at them across from her. Scarlet wanted to take them with her when they left, but she knew that wasn't possible. Not yet at least. They just needed time. Hopefully they would understand.

"Scar, we've talked about a lot. There was a lot going on then. I remember a conversation about your sunglasses, but it was nothing that stood out to me. Especially that I called you crazy. I would remember that."

"I know, there's been a bunch of things happening, but this is important. Do you have my sunglasses?"

He pulled her black sunglasses out of his pocket, handing them over to her. "Perfect shape. I know how much they mean to you."

Scarlet smiled and placed them over her face. "Thanks." Immediately, the color came back and she could see everything clearly now. "I don't know if you'll believe this or not, but I'm losing the ability to see colors."

"Wait, really?" Silver's jaw fell open as he put a hand on her shoulder. "How?"

Relief rushed through Scarlet as she realized that he might actually have believed her this time. Maybe now she could be herself and tell him the full story. After all, they were best friends and she hated having to hide anything from him. "Well, I'm not really sure how. I was hoping my parents could explain that, but that can't happen now–"

"They're right over there! I know how to operate the machines, we could as–"

"No point. As you mentioned, we don't have time. All I know is that these sunglasses keep the color in my life. For now, at least. When I take them off, it all starts to disappear."

"Ahhh, he answered, dragging the word out. "I guess that would explain why you never took them off before and why...well, pretty much everything. I get it now. I'm sorry that you tried to explain this before and I brushed it off. I'll never do that again, I promise."

She took his other hand in hers and brushed her lips across his cheek, then pulled away, knowing they couldn't be here much longer. "I'm so glad you believe me and don't think I'm crazy."

"Well for that, I'd say you are a bit insane." He laughed, swinging his arms. "I could never think that about you. If I ever do, there's certainly something wrong with me. Don't be afraid to smack me if I say that."

Scarlet chuckled, her cheeks getting hotter by the second. She guessed they were bright red now. "You got it."

Just as she was about to step over the hole they created in the glass, the doors swung open, so hard they both hit the walls on each side. Ash walked in with a smug grin on his face as he made his way toward the machines that controlled their bubble. Scarlet held back a gasp while Silver pulled her along as quietly as he could. Luckily they made it out of the glass, but she knew they only had a few seconds to escape, if that. Slowly making tiny movements toward the door, they could almost reach it; Ash was too involved in his other plans to notice.

Hitting a button on the machine, Scarlet wondered what Ash was up to. She could only hope that the controls would still work even though they broke it. The two of them continued tip-toeing toward the door, but as soon as Scarlet heard the shattering noise of the glass, all the hope left in her was lost.

Silver was just in arms reach of the door, pushing it slightly forward enough for them to escape. But the moment he made a small movement, the hinges squeaked, quickly giving them away. There was no chance for them to hide.

"Hey!" Ash screamed, slamming his hand on the machine, hitting multiple buttons at once. "Did you put this hole in the glass?" He bolted toward them as quickly as he could.

Scarlet stole a glance behind her, noticing that the prison they were in was now shattered into a million pieces. She smiled, knowing they were close to winning. They were just by the door. They'd be able to make it out and Ash would never get to them. But she wasn't too sure how well that plan would work. Hopefully Silver had a better plan than she did. Ash was gaining on them now. There was no time to waste. "Silver, run!" Scarlet let go of his hand and pushed open the door, both of them running away. "Where are we going to go?"

"Follow me!" Silver shouted, gaining speed.

Just as she let go of the door and caught up with her best friend, Scarlet heard the crack of Ash's face against the door as it swung. She was so happy now that she had to hold back a laugh. Everything she loved was around her again. Knowing where her parents were and having Silver back to normal again was just what she wanted. Though she couldn't slow down, there was a small part of her that didn't want to change anything.

They made a right instead of a left, bringing Scarlet to a new area she hadn't seen before. It was still as white as all of the other rooms in this dreadful building. The two of them stopped to catch their breath, Scarlet's heart racing faster than she could've imagined it would go. "What...what are we doing here?"

Silver took a deep breath, slowing down a little, and smiled. "You'll see."

Scarlet knew it wouldn't be easy, that there would be more obstacles for them to get over, but she only realized now that she couldn't wait to go on another big adventure with her best friend. Trying to find out what Ash was up to would be the best one yet. It was time to get her parents back.
