Chapter Three

Blinking, a blur of two people standing by her sides did its best to make its way into her vision. Unable to make out details, Scarlet glanced to the floor, realizing she was higher up than normal, the people standing next to her were holding her up. Before she got a chance to register what was going on, they lowered her to the ground, the cold freezing her bones as soon as her legs touched it. Footsteps faded away too quickly, not giving her even a clue as to what was happening. Immediately, she looked to the sky, but it wasn't blue. Sleep threatened to take over again, but she was determined to stay awake. Her eyes may be deceiving, but she was waiting for the day to come. Losing the ability to see colors became something she expected every day she woke up, the anticipation of when it would happen eating at her. But she wasn't afraid.

"Did we really have to put her in there?"

She knew now that it was a man's voice, one that sounded too familiar. He was whispering, she could only wonder if he thought she was asleep. The need to sleep started to wear off and Scarlet placed her hands against the floor and pushed herself up, wanting to sit and stretch her muscles. It seemed as if she'd been asleep for days, but there was no way of knowing if that was really true. Staying as quiet as she could, Scarlet glanced to the sky again, only now she knew why it wasn't blue when she first took a look at it. It was all clear, or at least that's what her eyes showed her.

"Of course," a deeper voice answered now. She wanted to look, but in case she was in trouble, she wasn't going to take the chance. "She tried to get into the one place no one's allowed. Even you."

The first voice sighed. "I tried to stop her."

Her eyes went wide. There was no mistaking that that was Silver. That single sentence of his words made her remember it all. His warnings, his touch, all of the talk about him wanting them together, every word she said to forget it all, and when he ran making her disregard everything he said. It was only then that she knew she did get into Ash's secret room with only a few seconds to search before he snatched her up. Still stiff, Scarlet managed to stand. She knew exactly where she was now. Her eyes never lied. She was in the same situation her parents were in. Glancing to her left, she could see them right across from her, staring her down as if she caused more problems. Ash and Silver needed to know she was awake. They still hadn't noticed her standing, which turned out to be good for her. Especially when she walked over to the edge of the glass and slammed her fist into it, making both of them jump. She screamed at the top of her lungs, but she knew no one could hear her.

Part of her still couldn't believe that Silver was there, helping Ash like it was no big deal. No matter how much she wanted to believe that they were best friends, that he would never do anything to harm her and most of all that he loved her like he said he did, seeing him there just made it all harder to get through her mind. Whether it was fake and he was doing it to get out of something he was somehow involved in or if he was really a part of Ash's team, she needed to find out why. The only issue was being able to hear him out long enough for him to actually explain. She wasn't ready to hear his side of the story. But watching the frown on his face as he stared at her, seeming to ignore everything Ash was saying as his lips moved, only made her want to get out of here more. Placing a hand on the glass, Scarlet studied their movements as they continued their conversation, ignoring her. Hated being ignored, she wanted to start something, but knew it was better to do once Ash left. Almost as if her legs were about to collapse on her, she struggled to stand, but considering nothing was happening, she chose to sit for a few minutes. It wouldn't cause any harm. Her eyelids fluttered, wanting for her to fall asleep again, but she fought it. Just before her eyes closed once more, she caught sight of Ash leaving. Now was her chance. He was gone and she could talk to Silver, somehow. She wasn't exactly sure if Silver could hear her, at least she didn't think so. Scarlet couldn't hear her parents when she was outside of the glass. But still, she tried anyway.

Pounding another fist on the glass, it was the only way she knew to get his attention. All she got back when he turned her way was a smile, but he was heading over to the controls that he stood at when she first saw him standing there when she arrived. Starting to shake, Scarlet wasn't sure if he was going to let her out. It wasn't going to be that easy, would it?

His eyes stared into hers, the grin never leaving his face. She watched him closely, loving the fact that he still wore her sweatshirt. It was probably a dirty mess, but it never left him. That had to mean something. Then, he pressed a small button in between the two large controls. Was that going to let her out? She waited a few seconds, but nothing happened. Next thing she knew, his voice came through the glass, chuckling. "You didn't listen to me, did you? I told you not to go in there."

Scarlet's feet left the ground for a moment as her heart raced. She wasn't expecting that. Still, she rolled her eyes. "Oh, would you just shut up? I can do what I want."

He pressed the button again. "Sure you can. But you're kind of stuck right now. I don't think that'll happen."

"Okay so not right now, you dummy. But still. I am allowed to. You can't tell me what to do." She crossed her arms. "Let me out of here. Clearly you're helping him."

"Ugh, Scar, I'm not helping him. Won't you believe me?"

"No," she answered. "I can't. I told you before that actions speak louder than words. How am I supposed to believe you if you're literally talking to him and helping him with all of his plans?"

"First of all." His voice got louder, like he was yelling. "Do you want me to end up in your position?"

She muttered, "Maybe."

A grin spread across his lips. "I know it's because you want me in there with you."

"That's not–"

"Sure, Scar. Sure," he responded, laughing. "Second, I am going to help you. You've just got to give me time."

"You seriously can't expect me to just sit here and wait for you. That's not going to happen."

He sighed. "But it is. Ash can't know."

"He doesn't have to know. I'll just melt the glass. That'll get me out of here. And my parents. Everyone's saved then." A big grin came across her face. She didn't know why she hadn't thought of it before, but it was perfect. Putting a hole in the glass wouldn't make Ash suspect a thing, at least until he saw the hole. Then, they'd be in trouble. But maybe by then they'd all be out.

"Not everyone," Silver said, placing his left hand on the other control. "We don't have much time. Ash will be back soon."

"Well, if you won't let me out, I'll just do it myself." Scarlet faced her hands out toward the glass, ignoring anything else Silver said. Fire started to sprout from her palms, but he knocked some ice into the glass, the bang against the glass almost making her lose her balance. "What'd you do that for?" she yelled.

"You wouldn't listen to me. Ash is almost here. I can hear him." That was the last she heard from Silver as Ash walked through the entrance and started to talk to him again. He took his hand off the little button that provided sound in the glass. She didn't know how long it would be until they'd speak again. Ash looked in her direction, but luckily she hadn't thrown anything off and he just brushed it off. Maybe Silver was helping Ash, but maybe he wanted her safe too. She couldn't decide which one was more important to him, yet she decided she would play along with his little plan for a little while. At least until he messed something up. But the doubt came back when the two of them left, leaving her alone in the glass with her parents across from her, so close yet so far.
