Chapter Six
Almost out of breath, Scarlet's lungs pleaded for her to stop as the fire burned within her, but she couldn't. Stopping could cost her both of their lives and there wasn't a single way she'd bother trying to bargain with Ash. There wasn't enough time. If only she could linger and focus on what the next option was, but Ash was catching up to them too fast. She didn't dare to look back; it was too easy to know he was right behind her.
Frantically, she grabbed her best friend by the arm, barely giving him time for his legs to catch up. He stumbled on the white tile, but quickly recovered, his breathing heavier now. "Where are we going?" It came out softer than normal.
She knew he was tired, just like she was, but there was nothing they could do. Even though she pulled him along, part of her didn't want to be in charge. He knew this place better than she ever did. But she was the one that admitted what was never really true, easily making her the leader. Now it was time for her to put that in motion. There was only one area she knew of that she needed to get inside. It was the quickest way to find out Ash's plans. Scarlet glanced over at Silver, sweat slowly trailed down her face, and responded, "Where Ash found me earlier."
Silver stopped in his tracks, jerking Scarlet back a few steps from the momentum. "Are you crazy?" he yelled, letting go of her arm. "There's no way I'm going in there!"
"Do you want to get crushed?" Scarlet shouted, running toward him. "We don't have time to argue! There's been enough of that. Come on!" Grabbing on to his hand, she pulled him toward the black door. She knew it was a crazy idea, but this was the only thing she could think of. They may not be safe for long. At least they might get a little time to talk. Still, she wondered why she was helping her best friend. With all the things he put her through, she'd do anything for him, even now. But then she realized that she, more than likely, wasn't doing it for him. Nothing was for him anymore. Not until she could trust him. She was helping him so she could learn exactly why he betrayed her. It was the only reason she could come up with for being as nice as she was to him. Even though she still did love him, maybe this was the best way to get him to admit to everything he did.
Scarlet was pulled out of her thoughts in a rush when Ash's footsteps came closer to them. Her eyes went wide at the chance of being caught. The space between them shortened with Ash gaining so much speed he could almost grab them. They stopped outside the door while Scarlet placed one hand on the knob, twisting and turning it with no luck. She couldn't focus, her hands glistening with sweat. All she needed to do was open the door, but she was unable to pull herself together. Everything jumbled in her mind, leaving her too spread out to do one simple task. She sighed and backed up quickly, knowing she was running out of time. Then, she pushed Silver toward the door. He stood in front of her with a blank look on his face. "You do it. Now! Open the door!"
"Why can't you?"
Rolling her eyes, she shoved him again. He was so close now that his hands were forced on the door knob. "That doesn't matter! Just do it! We're running out of time!"
Silver stared at her, not making a move to get them inside. "Honestly, I don't see why you can't—"
"I swear, if you don't open that door I will make you open it."
"But—"
She sighed, getting even closer to him. "What is with you? Are you not able to open a door all of the sudden? Here. Let me help." Placing her hands over his, the door knob sent a chill through her bones. Scarlet shivered and twisted the knob to the right, moving her best friend's hands in the same motion. "See? That wasn't so hard now, was it?"
Without another word, the two of them scrambled inside, slamming the door shut behind them. It was almost too hard to take another breath, but she did, filling her lungs with the sweet air she could almost call freedom. She placed her hands on top of her knees, leaning toward the ground. "We..." Stopping, Scarlet's lips moved, but no words came. She needed a break. If only they could stop and relax for just a few moments. But she continued on anyway. "We did it."
"For now," Silver answered. "Who knows how much time we have in here before he catches us."
Scarlet could only nod, knowing he was right. Her shoes skidded across the floor as she took a few steps forward, those cages that were there when she entered the room the first time still filling her vision. It was too dark. She was barely able to make out the features on her best friend's face. With her palms face up and waiting a few seconds, she concentrated a little too intently before fire popped out from her hands, lighting up the room like a flashlight.
Now that she finally calmed herself down a little bit, the motion of setting her hand over Silver's kept replaying in her mind. Of course it was just to move them faster into the room, but a tiny part let her heart race at the mere thought of it. There was no doubt that her touch still drove her crazy. She could only wonder if he felt the same way. If only trusting him was easier. In order to do that, Scarlet needed to figure out what he was hiding. That had to be her first priority.
When a hand fell on her shoulder, she jumped, bringing her eyes up to Silver's. A small smile crept on her lips after she realized that staring at the ground was her only company for a few minutes, not wanting to look at him. But now that she was, the fire in the room brightened, bringing the concrete walls to life. She couldn't deny that she needed him. His eyes only drowned her further into his sea of blue, barely able to keep her afloat. Every touch of his sent a spark surging through her body, melting her heart to pieces. Then, she remembered what she brought him in here for and said, "Tell me what you've been hiding from me."
