Chapter Seven
Silence kept them company through the concrete walls longer than Scarlet expected. Silver only glanced around a few times, placing his thumbs in his pockets as the two of them advanced a couple steps forward. He kicked at the dirt before looking into her eyes, jaw opening as if he was about to speak before closing it again. She had enough. Ash was probably right behind them and he wasn't revealing a single thing. "So," Scarlet said, dragging out the word to cover up the awkward moment. It didn't seem to help. The sparks of fire falling onto the dirt caught her eye, leaving her no choice but to look down. At this point she'd take anything over looking at him, but she still continued the conversation. "You've been quiet long enough. Tell me your secrets."
"Are you sure you want to know?"
Anger ran through her veins at his question, fire slowly pouring from her hands again, making the light in the room much stronger. She took a deep breath, somehow managing to calm herself down and rolled her eyes. "Are you insane? You're asking me this like it's the first time I've mentioned anything about it." Instead of making her way forward, she turned and got closer to him. The same light that shined through the room was now making his blue eyes pop. "Of course I want to know," she shouted, "How many times do I have to ask for you to spill? Just. Tell. Me."
"Alright, alright. I will. Before I say anything, just know that I love you and I always will—"
Scarlet sighed. "I've heard this before. Get to the point."
"—and I don't want this to change anything more than it already has so please understand—"
"Mhmm," she hummed, interrupting him again. "Just tell me."
"—that everything I did was because I thought I was protecting you. You should know I would never actually hurt you. That is not—"
Flames rose from Scarlet's hand even higher now. Every moment the anger flew through her, the more she started to lose control of her power. She couldn't figure out why this happened, but she tried to contain it. It was no use. Fire was flying around the two of them when she flailed her arms in the air, rage rising now. "Just tell me, Silver! I've waited so long to hear what you need to say and I'm getting so tired of waiting!" She walked toward him, fire still blazing through her as she shouted, "Do you think I care about anything else right now? We are under pressure. Who knows where Ash could be! I need you to say it and do it now!"
"Okay I'm sorry, I—"
"No, I've had enough!" Scarlet's voice rose again. The fire was so close to the two of them that sweat now rolled from the top of her head. Still furious with him, she shoved him to the ground. "You can't expect me to just sit here and wait on you. I'm done!" Huffing, she turned away from him, careful to let the fire fall slowly as she took a breath.
"Fine," Silver spoke, multiple deep breaths escaping too fast. "Fine. But here's one thing I think you should know."
Scarlet hadn't faced him. She didn't want to see what she did, even though there was no mistaking it. From the sounds of the scraping against the ground, she knew he was trying to stand up again. "What?" She crossed her arms, still fuming.
"Let's see, how do I put this?" He chuckled sarcastically. "Oh yeah. I'm on fire. Fix this!"
She laughed and rolled her eyes. "Ha ha. Sure. Just like you always think you are on fire, huh? That's just what you want me to think. We all know you are."
Sighing, he yelled, "I'm serious, Scarlet. Look at me!"
His voice made her flinch, unsure how to react but she turned slowly, trying her best to wipe every little piece of emotion on her face. At first, Scarlet didn't think she could actually set someone on fire unintentionally. Yet when the flames came into her view, tearing up her best friend's shirt as they inched closer to his chest, it took all of her energy to hold back a scream. She gasped, running towards him. How could she have lost control so easily? There's a chance he'd never forgive her for this after all they've been through. She didn't even want to think of the results of this. A tear slipped down her cheek as she lifted his head, watching the flames. The bridge between them would be burned now and she had no idea how to fix it. Being a master in setting everything on fire was too easy, but learning how to take it all back was something she still needed to be taught.
"Scarlet!" Silver shouted, taking her out of her trance. "Do something!"
"I-I can't," she stammered. "I don't know how. Can't you melt it?" Placing her hand on his forehead, she brushed the hair out of his face. The touch eased her pain of seeing him like this, but the reality was still there. He was almost as hot as the volcano she stepped foot on before he got taken away. When things were good between them. If only she could wish on a star and take all of this back, but it wasn't possible. Now she needed to be strong and figure out how to save him. After all, this was her fault.
The concentration on his face told her he was trying to bring his power to life. She could only hope that the fire wasn't draining him. They were on a timer and nothing was happening. Unable to help much, she didn't know what to do, but she decided her touch against his might help more than she thought. Sure their relationship was rocky right now, but they were fire and ice, always meant to be together no matter what anyone else thought. Still, she hesitated before putting her hand into his. The minute their hands touched, his eyes flew open, the bright blue as clear as the sea that took him down when all of this started. If she looked hard enough, she could probably see right through them. Before she had a chance to think, water came up from his hand, freezing as it ran up into the air. Time stopped for a few seconds as the ice slowly lowered down to his body, crashing against the flames that continued to rise, then the two powers exploded into fireworks.
Pushed back, Scarlet lost his grip and fell onto her side, but the impact barely hurt her as she jumped up and ran back to check on him. Silver was breathing hard and burn marks ran through his shirt, leaving small scars on his chest, but his head turned toward her and he smiled. "We did it."
No words came to her mind. There was nothing she could say that would fix any of this. Instead, her lips landed on his, soft but still passionate. Immediately, Silver followed her lead and ran a hand through her hair, making her smile. She couldn't believe she almost lost him again. It didn't matter what happened between them. Everything around them changed, but she'd always love him. Putting him in danger like that gave her a heart attack. The next thing was to figure out how to fix that, but for now, she stayed wrapped in his arms. Finally the two of them came up for air and reality hit her. He still hadn't told her anything. She didn't want to leave his side, but he'd been putting this off for too long. Sighing, she started to move and said, "You still haven't told me."
He pulled her back against his body, laying her head on his chest. "Don't you dare. If you think you're leaving me after that, you're so wrong."
A small smile crept on her lips as she thought about the two of them being in a happy relationship again. The happy moments instead of the bad ones. She would love that. But it was too hard to give him what he wanted after everything he did to her. Still, she chuckled, managing to make sure he knew that she was serious. "Then tell me. Now."
Taking a deep breath, his face went blank but he agreed. "Alright. So, you need to know this before I tell you anything else. And you can't be upset."
"You know I can't promise that. Go on."
Curling her hair around his finger while he struggled to come up with words, he answered, "I've been working with Ash since the third cl–"
A rattling against one of the cages made Scarlet jump, but being too invested in what her best friend was about to say, she brushed it off. More than likely she was overreacting and there was nothing in here that could attack them. Considering they didn't notice anything when they walked in and as far as she knew there was no other entrance, they had to be safe. But it wasn't until she heard a voice that she froze and Silver completely stopped his sentence, both of them looking in the direction of the cage to the left.
"Well, well, well, who do we have here? Are you Ash's hostages too?"
