Chapter One

Heart shattering in her chest, Scarlet wondered what Silver meant by everything. Was it everything from the time they met? Or from when this started with Ash and she lost her parents? Had he lied to her throughout it all? She didn't know who to trust anymore. Every bit of power that made her stronger became weak. Fire was slowly leaving her body as it poured out of her hands. She gasped, unaware for a moment. Thinking it was just her sunglasses acting up, she didn't move. Until the fire hit the floor, burning everything in its path. It inched closer to her best friend, but Scarlet wasn't even sure if she could still call him that.

His feet bounced off the ground trying to avoid the fire bolting toward him as it melted the ground to pieces. Ice cubes slammed toward it heavily like hail, but nothing worked. He couldn't escape it. "Scarlet, I promise I didn't...I'm sorry. Please make it stop. I'm your best friend. When I said I love you, I meant it. I really did. Please, stop."

Looking between her parents and Silver, she didn't know what to do. Or even how to control what was happening. Ash was just smirking in the corner throughout all of it. Part of her wanted to make it stop, but wanting to cause him pain became more of a friend than an enemy now. "How could you? First you're working with him and then you kiss me, but only tell me you're sorry for everything afterward? What is that supposed to mean, Silver? How can I even call you my best friend now? Maybe you should just stay here and I'll take my parents and go home. I don't...I can't trust you anymore." Every word flew out of her mouth so quick there was no chance she could take it back now. Anger still fled through her bones. It was clear when the fire kept toward him. Still, she partly wished she could just swipe a finger in the air and take it all back. It wasn't worth trying, though.

"You don't understand. There's so much more to what you're seeing."

"I don't understand? My parents are standing right there in that stupid bubble that you won't let them out of, but I don't understand?" The fire grew darker, not even knowing how that was possible, and raised. It stood tall in front of Silver's face, staring at him like this was all his fault. One wrong move and he could melt. That thought scared her, but she still stood up for herself. "I told you I love you. Right here. And you're telling me I don't understand. You've got the wrong girl if you think I'm going to fall for that."

Silver's eyes glistened with tears. "Scarlet, no. That's not what I meant—"

Clearing her throat, the fire pointed straight toward him now instead of directly up. "Then, what did you mean? Enlighten me. I'm not going to play games with you."

"I-I can't say," he stuttered, sniffling. Tears ran down his cheeks, managing to freeze right on his face. "Please, Scar. I love you so much. Please believe me."

It was the first time she could remember seeing him cry, so sad that ice froze. She couldn't believe that he was actually shedding tears. The fire lowered slowly. She wasn't so sure if it would've actually hurt him. Part of her still wanted to. There was no way of knowing if he was being one hundred percent truthful. With the fire now at his waist, she stared at him. "How am I supposed to believe you if you can't tell me? I thought we were best friends." Now, she sniffled, but ended up crying more than he was. Each tear lowered the fire more. Her voice was softer, yet the questions never stopped. "Best friends tell each other everything. What kind of secrets are you hiding? If you really love me the way you say you do, the way that kiss said you do, now would be a great time to tell me everything you're sorry for."

"You know if I could tell you I would. In a heartbeat. You're my world, Scarlet. Please don't shatter it." He walked closer, the fire creating a path as he came forward. Silver held her hand. "I love you. This isn't the end for us. There is no end. I'm still the same person I always was."

The words shook her. She wanted to believe him. Wanted to run to him. But most of all, his touch made her want to kiss him. His eyes sparked a beautiful blue; it became one of her favorite colors just a few weeks ago, but it disappeared so quickly. That favorite color broke her heart and she wasn't sure it'd ever be the same again. Every moment of that went away when she glanced to her right, her amazing parents who took Silver in like their own child, still sat there in the bubble watching everything happen. Scarlet pulled away, turning her back on him. "I don't believe you."

His hand brushed against her shoulder, but she moved too quickly. "Why?"

Their hands touched for just a moment, sparking a jolt in her heart. "Why? Actions speak louder than words, Silver. I love you. I told you that and it's something I'll never take back. But you can't expect to let my parents still sit there watching us and let everything go back to normal. This is not normal." She pointed toward Ash. "You need to fix whatever you did to him."

Ash laughed, coming closer to join them. "There's nothing to fix. He's not the person you thought he was. Things are different now. You two should stop arguing and move on."

"You're a liar!" Silver shouted, the ice that was once heading toward the ground now rotated in Ash's direction. Blue flew toward him as he rolled to the ground, careful not to be attacked. "You're lucky I missed."

The building surrounding them was now filled with color a little over half way. White still shined from the top of the roof, gliding down. Scarlet wasn't sure what was going on, but her sunglasses didn't change a thing. When she slid them off her face for a minute, colors flew everywhere. From bright blue glowing around Silver to a golden hanging around Ash, a mixture of red, blue and gold filled the floor. Where the fire destroyed the ground, ice replaced every step Silver took toward her earlier. That was one thing she'd always love about him. He was never afraid to jump if it meant he might not survive. He'd do it for anyone he cared about, but she still couldn't put all of her trust in him. Scarlet's parents stared at her from the glass. She tried to read their lips and figure out what they were saying about the whole situation, but it was no use. Their hands touched the glass while they pointed at her best friend. They were probably telling her to forgive him and move on, to save them, but she just couldn't. It wasn't that easy.

"Am I, though? Or were you trying not to attack me? There's a difference."

Scarlet chimed in. "Maybe he's right, Silver. Considering you're working for him, there's no way you could hurt him, right?"

Silver opened his mouth, then closed it again. He moved toward her, but she backed away once more. No matter how much she wanted his touch, things weren't the same. He wasn't the one in the ocean who saved her, or even in the volcano when she thought of him and got the clue. Maybe this wasn't really him. But it sure felt like him. The words he said to her were his thoughts, they had to be. If he were really here, he'd attack Ash, wouldn't he? She didn't know what happened to her best friend, but she was going to find out. Betraying her was something she never saw coming and she could only hope that he was somewhere else. The part of her that knew everything she was saying was just trying to get her to believe it wasn't true, but it was. Not attacking their enemy showed that.

"That's what I thought," Scarlet said after a few moments of silence. He was crying now, but she wouldn't go comfort him. He could've admitted it all and he didn't. It took all of her courage to look him dead in the eyes, turn around, and listen to her own steps as they faded away from him. She didn't know where she would go, but being here would only cause her more pain. Already being stitched up enough, she couldn't take anymore.
