Chapter Nine

Tears wouldn't stop flowing down her cheeks since the second Scarlet woke up in the same bubble she was just in hours ago. Almost escaping, she was too frustrated with herself now. But it wasn't just her crying and at least this time she wasn't alone. Silver stood across from her in the same bubble, both of them stuck with no way to get out. Deep down she knew he was taking this hard. Neither of them were speaking, but there was a cloud of rain over him, soaking him completely. She never saw this before. Come to think of it, she couldn't remember a single time he ever got like this. Part of her wanted to fix it, to make him happy once more, but with everything they went through she wasn't so sure if that was even possible.

Her gaze drifted toward him without a second thought. He wasn't even glancing at her now. The rain still fell around him, the sea of blue now turning to darkness. She couldn't even imagine what was running through his head. Though she was upset from being trapped again, her heart ached knowing he probably thought he failed her. But he wasn't the only one. She failed him, too. Her mouth opened, wanting to say anything she could think of, but everything was blank. For the first time, she wasn't sure how to comfort him. The cool concrete hit Scarlet's legs as she sat down, still staring at Silver. If she wouldn't have got him involved in her parents going missing, none of this would've happened. It was all her fault. Here he was, changed and lying to her as if it wasn't a problem, but she was the one to blame. She missed her best friend. It was time to hear all the answers. He couldn't escape now and she'd take a rocky relationship over them not speaking at all. Her hands shook as she made the decision to get up and talk to him. Before she got too far, Scarlet stopped and took a deep breath. This could either fix everything or ruin it all. Not letting herself run wild with thoughts, she moved forward and tapped Silver on the shoulder.

Silver didn't acknowledge her at first. It took her starting to turn away for him to grab her wrist softly and pull her back. "Wait," he mumbled. "I know you want to talk. There are tons of things you need to know and yes, I've kept it a secret for too long. I know that, too. But why don't we think about that later? Shouldn't we be thinking about how to get out of here first?"

Her eyes locked on to his. They were a different shade now, darkness pouring into them too quickly, like the wrong answer would completely shatter him. Silence slowly spread between them as she contemplated what to do. Words chose not to come out of her mouth, knowing anything she said wouldn't be right. Instead she shook her head. Letting Silver get his way would be the easy path. She needed these answers. All of this secret keeping went on for too long; it was time for him to spill it all, whether he wanted to or not. "I can't, Silver. Yes, you're right I do want to escape from this nightmare." She looked away, too scared to see his reaction from what she was about to say next. "But when I found out you were a part of this more than I thought, that's when my nightmare turned into a reality. We were supposed to be on the same team and you–"

"Stop," Silver interrupted, grabbing her hand. He pulled her closer and lifted her chin to meet his gaze. "I know I hurt you, but we are on the same team. We always will be. Please understand that what I'm doing, even though it may seem terrible, I'm doing it for you."

Scarlet sighed, but didn't move. Though she wanted to know everything, there was a tiny part of her that still wanted him. She loved his touch now just as much as she did before. No matter how much she wanted them to be together again like two pieces that fit easily into a puzzle, she knew she needed to continue on. It was time to brace herself for the heartbreak. "How can I see that if you don't tell me what is going on? I need to know. You say you're doing this for me, but what is it that you're doing? It's not fair to leave me in the dark, especially when it involves me."

"You're right." His arm dropped from her chin, his icy eyes leaving a mark as he turned away from her. Sitting down on the concrete floor, Silver patted the spot next to him. "It must be story time," he said, lips cracking a small smile.

"Are you trying to lighten the mood?" Scarlet asked, walking toward him.

He shrugged, laughing while holding his arms out for her. "Did it work?"

"Maybe." She smiled and sat down, pushing him playfully. Here she was seconds away from finding out what Silver had been hiding all this time and no matter how much she said she was ready for this, now that the time showed up, she didn't know. Having this little moment between them told her that she definitely wasn't ready to give Silver up. She could only hope that what he was going to say next wasn't going to shatter the world around her even more than it already had been. Deep down, Scarlet knew that wasn't possible.
