Chapter Four

Smoke rose from the palms of her hands, little by little, wanting to feel the warmth instead of the cold, hard floor she was laying on. It was too easy to turn her head and scream into the void, staring at her best friend that she missed too much. No matter what he did, she still wanted to be by his side, but everything he did got in the way. He barely looked at her now, choosing to follow Ash's every move instead, and giving her a treatment she never expected. If only it could all go back to normal; she had to hope that maybe one day it would.

Clear glass swarmed around her vision, one little door straight in front of her on the left. She saw it before, but every time she went up to it and pushed, it wouldn't budge. It was more than likely locked from the outside so they could at least bring her food and water every few times every day for two weeks now. But even when Silver came in with that sad frown on his face, probably to try and tell her this wasn't what he wanted, he still managed to slam the door shut behind her. She was sick of it. Nearly a month since she turned seventeen now, that celebratory day flashing in her mind almost like it was a dream she could never reach again, and her life flipped so quickly she didn't know what to think.

The unbearable moments of wanting to talk to her parents, watching them the same way they did to her, was something she never imagined. Once in a while she'd try to talk to them, screaming, even though the movement of her lips were the only thing they could see. They never responded; it surprised her at first, but now she was close to giving up. She remembered Ash mentioning that she had no idea what they've done, yet with all this time to think as she sat here, nothing came to her mind. They were amazing parents. Giving her everything she needed and more, there was no reason they would do anything wrong, would they? She couldn't help but turn toward them again, a hand falling on the glass as she stared. After a few seconds she looked away, probably a little too quickly, but she knew tears would start to fall.

Ash and Silver kept going in and out of the room. Scarlet always looked up when footsteps appeared, but it was never just Silver alone. They hadn't gotten a chance to talk since the last time, which made everything worse. Every so often he'd give her a small smile, but that was it. From the way things were going, Ash was definitely planning something. The two of them kept coming in and testing out the machines that stood between her and her parents. No matter what button either one of them pushed, it wasn't the controls to let her out and nothing was affected in that room. She had no idea what it was, but she needed to find out. Maybe if she did, she could trust Silver again. Without knowing if she was even ready to give Silver a chance to explain, there was a part of her deep down that wanted to.

Scarlet sat down, wondering how in the world she needed to plan to get out of here. Knowing that it would be best if she got Silver alone, she glanced out the window, but no one was in her view. They must've been gone again. When she looked to her right, the lights around the room focused on a shadow, but this time it was alone. It was shorter than Ash; she figured it might be Silver. That shadow vanished when it stepped out from behind the wall, leaving exactly who she thought it was. Her best friend, standing there with a grin on his face. Alone. He wasn't paying too much attention to her and that needed to change. Now was her chance to get out of here. More importantly, to have him prove his loyalty.

She just needed to figure out how to get him to notice her. A chill ran through her bones again, making her shiver from head to toe. Lifting her hands, she focused, letting fire spill straight up out of her palms. It became almost a tradition now; she couldn't handle the cold. The bright red flame that flew up made Silver look toward her and grin, but he went back to messing with the machines a little too quickly. Scarlet wanted more of a reaction out of him, creating more fire. It started dancing between the left and right, meeting in the middle, but he still didn't bother to pay attention. Anger ran through her veins now, the fire she once had control of was now lost. It moved in every possible direction, bouncing toward the glass and back again. The smoke rose as the fire continued to spread. Needing to calm herself down, she lowered her hands, hoping that it would stop, but no matter what she did the fire and smoke kept coming. Eventually, the smoke filled her glass bubble. Now, she trembled, her heart racing faster than she could keep up. She wanted to curl up and sit on the cold floor, but all of the panic froze her in place.

He still wasn't looking at her. All she could ask herself was why. Knowing he couldn't hear what was going on, she needed to get his attention, fast. But how? The fire wouldn't stop, leaving her unable to use her hands. Taking a step was too hard. She couldn't get to the glass now. What if he never noticed her? Being so close to the glass she could almost hit it, her freedom was right around the corner. When she got help, Scarlet could only hope he would let her out. But when was a big word. Too focused on his work, Silver hadn't looked up. There may have been a small glance, but not enough to realize what was really going on. Pain rushed to her head now, heart still running faster as her knees almost buckled from under her. She wouldn't die in here, would she?

Multiple coughs escaped, easily telling her that there was too much smoke in this tiny little room. Of course when she tried to get a glance out of the window, it was too grey. All she could think about now was whether or not she'd make it out of here. It was getting too difficult to keep up with now. Sweat ran through her body from the heat. Normally she loved it, but now her power only made her want to run away. Yet she couldn't escape it. After what seemed to be an eternity of seeing flames, Scarlet collapsed to the ground, her body hitting the concrete a little too hard as she fell back, but the fire was slowly lowering. She blinked, trying to adjust her vision then coughed, but before she got a chance to get up again, the darkness took her down.
