Chapter Five
When the light hit her, Scarlet knew she was higher up than the ground but didn't dare to open her eyes. Smoke still ran through her nostrils, making her tremble as all of the thoughts from earlier came rushing back. Was she still in the glass? Part of her figured she was considering the smell. But it could also be on her clothes. Bouncing up and down a little, she wondered if someone was getting her out. She didn't understand how that could be possible with the door locked from the inside. Unless Silver did it. Maybe she finally caught his attention before it was too late. Unable to help it, she took a peek, needing to see if it was really him.
Sure enough, Silver unlocked the door and kicked it open with his foot, carrying her carefully out of the room she had been trapped in for two weeks. This all confused her even more. She didn't know what to think. He always said that he wasn't helping Ash, but for so long he was always doing everything that showed different actions. Now, here he was saving her like it was no problem at all. From what she could see, Ash was nowhere to be found, so maybe he did it because no one was watching her. But there was a part of her that wanted to believe that he truly was trying to save her. What best friend wouldn't, right? No matter what they went through, he wouldn't let her die. That couldn't be possible. She shut her eyes before he would realize that she was awake, wondering if he would say anything he wouldn't say if he looked at her.
He set her down on a chair that sat right outside of the room that held her prisoner. Holding her head up he said, "Wake up, Scar. You're okay now. I wouldn't let anything happen to you."
Scarlet stayed still for a few extra moments before she decided to blink, his blue eyes popping into her vision. She gave him a smile before pushing herself up against the chair a little more.
"Careful, you've been out for a while." He brushed her hair back and put the few pieces behind her ear, grinning. "I'm so glad you're okay."
His voice was different now, concerned almost. Back to what it used to be. For once, they weren't fighting, even though she hadn't said a word yet. It needed to stay this way. She missed him. Reaching for his hand, she responded, "You saved me. What happened?"
At first, he sat across from her, waiting for her next move. Now he moved to her right and ended up on the cold floor, holding her hand. His smile turned into a little frown. "I'm not exactly sure. There was a lot of the smoke in the room and when I came in you were passed out, unconscious. It's been a few hours."
"Hours? What about Ash? If he finds me out, who knows what'll happen." Scarlet jumped up out of the chair, ready to walk away and get back into the room. She hated it. Though she would love to cause some trouble, she didn't think her body was ready for it yet. Turning, her parents were still in their glass, not paying attention to either of them.
Before she was able to take a step, Silver got up and placed both his hands on the glass on both sides of her. He smirked. "You're not going anywhere just yet."
She couldn't help but smile as she looked into his eyes. He was right. His hands were so close to her head she wouldn't be able to move unless she pulled an arm off the glass and made him. Forcing herself to take a breath and breaking eye contact with him, she realized she didn't want to do any of that even if she could. Her heart pumped faster and the butterflies came back. Just like they used to. He had her trapped and he knew it judging by the way he continued to stare. His lips parted and for a few moments that was the only thing she noticed. She wondered how they would feel against hers. Would it be different now that everything happened between them? Maybe, but no matter how badly she wanted to try it, she knew that it wasn't the best decision. So focused on watching him and the way he looked at her, unable to leave the position he cornered her in, Scarlet didn't realize that her hand she had on the chair from when she jumped was on fire. When she looked to her left quickly, the smoke was coming into the air again, slowly burning the chair as it started at the top.
Silver took a couple steps backward, but put his hands back on the glass before she could move again. "Woah, you didn't have to do that."
The chair was burning faster now. She removed her hand from it and said, "I know I didn't. You may have me stuck here, but I can do much worse."
"Alright, alright. I get it. You're still upset. If I could fix that I would, but you'll just have to trust me on this."
She sighed, too tired to keep hearing that same few words over and over. "How? All you've done is lie. This is the first genuine step you've taken toward getting my trust back, but I just can't. You've known more than I ever thought you did and you haven't done anything to prove it to me. Can't you just tell me one reason?"
He took another step closer to her, their bodies touching now. His right hand stroked her cheek, making the fire in her become stronger. She knew he was trying to distract her and though it was working, she needed answers. All she asked for was one. A part of her wanted to savor this moment and kiss him. They were so close there was almost no other choice, but instead, she pushed him away.
He stumbled back, but recovered quickly and stood up straight. "Come on, Scarlet! I promise I will tell you, just not now. Let's just forget this for one moment."
"No," she answered, walking away from him. "If you can't tell me, then there is no us right now."
"Fine." He huffed and grabbed her wrist, pulling her back toward him. She spun closer, hitting his chest. "You want an answer?" he whispered into her ear. "I'll give you one. I'm not letting you go."
Her heart raced. Though afraid of what he was going to say next, she was ready. Maybe this one act of telling her would make her trust him just a little more, even though she knew it would break her heart. The fact that this was all true still messed with her head. She had so many words to choose from, but being so close to him, the smell of his cologne replacing the smoke, all she could do was nod.
Silver sighed, shutting his eyes before he took another long breath. "I'm sorry. I just want you to know that before I say anything. It's been really hard for me to keep this from you and I would say it all if I could but I don't know how much time we have left without Ash."
"Please just tell me. I can't promise I won't be upset but I need to know."
His arms wrapped around her, holding her close. "Okay. Wow this is harder than I thought." Another deep breath. "Alright. I've known about this since–"
The doors to the building where Scarlet was once trapped flew open. She scrambled out of his grasp, doing her best to run back into the glass, but it was too late. Ash pulled her back, holding on to her arm so tight she screamed. "What is going on here?" he yelled, pointing at Silver. "Did you let her out? I told you there would be punishment if you did!"
"I-I–" her best friend stuttered, unable to get any words out. She didn't know about a punishment, but there was no way she'd let Silver get hurt. Not after he saved her. He may have broken her trust, but deep down he was still hers and she wouldn't let anything happen to him.
Her voice was tiny, but she managed to speak up a little, though she could barely hear it. "No, Ash. It was me. I did it."
"That's impossible! There's no way your powers would work in there!"
She laughed, even though she was still struggling in his grasp. The confidence grew stronger as the fire burned in her. Though one arm was unable to work with her powers right now, she still had her other hand. Without being noticed, she lifted her hand in the air and turned it toward his shoulder. The fire blasted out of her hand and immediately hit his shoulder. "Sure, Ash. Keep thinking that."
Ash yelled, holding on to his shoulder as he stumbled back. She knew she only had a few moments before he'd come after her. Looking between him and Silver, she ran over to her best friend and grabbed his arm. "We only have a few minutes before he comes after us! I didn't hit him that hard. Come on!"
"Why?"
"Because you still need to tell me your reason." The two of them ran out of the room her parents were trapped in and stopped outside the door. Scarlet took a moment to look back, wondering if she should've found a way to release her parents first, but she knew there was no time. Then, the doors burst open and she knew she was right. All they had to do now was keep running. She could only hope they'd escape.
