Caleb stared back at his reflection in the bathroom mirror. There was nothing wrong with his face, his mahogany eyes were aligned and were well matched to his nose, lips and eyebrows. He splashed some water on his face and used the towel to wipe off the drops that lingered on his olive skin.

He could not understand why the campers were staring at him when he did his morning round to check up on them.

He stepped into the kitchen of the remote forestry station. Before he even had time to start preparing lunch for the team a deafening noise brought him to his knees. His hands quickly turned down the volume on his hearing aids.

He rushed to the control room, switched off the siren and checked the monitors. A fire had started on the East-Northeastern side of the mountain. A mere thirty four and a half miles off the campsite.

"What do we have?" asked John, his Deputy Chief, as he sipped his warm cup of coffee.

"Fire," Caleb checked the wind gauge monitor. "Winds are moving at a speed of twenty one miles per hour, labeled as a fresh breeze."

"That could pick up speed without a moments notice," John voiced, and went through the notions of calling in the incident to headquarters.

"What do we have?" Ela yelled, as she ran down from the attic of their small forestry station taking the steps two at a time.

"Fire," John and Caleb replied in sync.

"It is not safe to take the steps two at a time," Caleb said.

Ignoring Calebs comment, "I'm coming with," she stated, while stomping her feet, "I'll be able to monitor him better." John nodded, Ela smiled and quickly walked up the attic mumbling to herself. Caleb could not hear her as well he should. He turned up the volume on his hearing aids.

"Alex, you're in charge," Deputy chief informed as they walked past Alex who was leaned on the door frame of the room.

"Yes sir."

John and Caleb, both rushed to their lockers, put on their uniforms and jumped in their type 7 wildland fire engine.

"Ela, come on, we need to go yesterday," Deputy Chief John called.

"Coming dad," she mumbled as she held on to her laptop, temperature gun, wind gauge and a piece of toast in her mouth.

"Miss Ela, it is not wise to talk with your mouth full," Caleb said. A low chuckle escaped John.

"Dad, don't say a word. Caleb, thank you for the information."

It took them half an hour to reach the fire. Ela pointed her temperature gun towards the fire. The screen flashed at 1674 degrres Fahrenheit.

"Temperature, one thousand six hundred and seventy four, no seventy five degrees. Winds are steady at twenty two miles per hour. Permision to engage," Caleb read off his wrist monitor and turned his head to Ela.

"All systems are ready," she said as she hit the recording command on her laptop. "Go ahead Caleb."

Ela was biting her nails as she watched both her monitor for Caleb's vitals and the fire progress as he begun to reach for the fire hose and headed to the fire front.

"He has this," her father whispered.

"It's my last chance."

They stood side by side as Caleb, Ela's side project, a project she had been dreaming and working on since high school, extinguished the fire.

Finally, Ela thought. An AI forestry officer. Able to react faster and more effectively to extinguish small wildfires before they turn into massive life threatening fronts.

Caleb's systems had alerted him that the wind changed direction. He immediately retracted and approached the fire from another angle.

"Great job Caleb," Deputy Chief John said. "You too my dear," he said as he patted her back.

Ela beamed at her father's words.
