unspoken rule greenie
INSIDE THE HOMESTEAD
"So where are all the girls?" he asked munching on his sandwich.
That statement was enough to set the glade into chaotic silence. The greenie looked around to see all the commotion had stopped. The young boy with brown long hair looked to his guide, Newt, who looked like a puppy who was just hit with a semi. Before newt could speak Gally got up from his chair, it skidding against the hard wood floor, and walked out without a word. Newt sighed and looked at the greenie sitting across from him,
"You listen here greenie and you listen good. We do not speak about that, ya hear? Never ask or talk about that unless you want to be thrown off the edge of the cliff" He answered ever so callously. The greenie gulped down rising saliva and nodded.
"Good that."
With that the gladers went back to eating their food in silence.
1 hour later
The doors were closing and Newt sat staring. He always found the doors intriguing and somehow calming. He felt a hand on his shoulder and heat radiated off of it.
"I miss her too you know." His Asian friend told him gazing at the closing doors as well.
before newt could respond a shadow came around the corner. This shadow was running, no sprinting, towards them, but with a weary host.
"What the bloody-" his voice went soft as he saw who was running towards them. It was Hope.
"No way." Minho whispered.
The girl ran as hard as her muscles would allow and just when she had almost made it a griever came. The two boys shouted for her to run harder and faster but they knew their was a chance that they would truly lose her. The rest of the gladers gathered at the commotion. All except for one; Gally.
"What's going on, Newt?" Alby, the true leader, asked.
"Is that... Hope?" someone asked from the crowd.
Before they knew what they were doing they were yelling their lungs out.
The griever started to gain, but Hope looked into her brothers eyes and found a burst of energy. She flew through the doors leaving the griever to be smashed in between the door. She collapsed into glade breathing so hard they thought she was having a panic attack.
"Hope! How are- why are- where have-HUH?" Minho asked.
"Water, Toad, water." She said referring to his old nickname.
"Go get her some water!" He yelled so loud she thought her ears had spilt in half.
Feet echoed going away from the kneeling girl. She fell from one knee into her brother to where he completely supported her weight. she evened out her breathing and looked towards her big brother.
"Hey, Gecko." She whispered.
"Hey, Blue eyes. Stay awake so we can take you to the med-house." She nodded and stood leaning against him.
They hobbled through the door where everything went into complete chaos. The med-jacks yelled for everyone to get out. Out the door they went waiting for the unknown. When a thought occurred to Newt.
"Has anyone told, Gally?"
everyone paled at the thought. Newt and Minho raced to the builders hut only to find him staring at a notebook Hope had wrote in so often the pages were worn down with dust. Gally bolted up right staring at the two teens who had busted into his room. They panted heavily from both stress and the run there.
"Gally... We found Hope. She's here. She ran in from the maze right before the doors closed. Gally, she's back our light came home." Newt said still not believing it himself.
"What?! Where is she at? Where's Hope?" he said running up to them and shaking Minho.
"With med jacks." Before he could say more the builder was out the door.
Gally didn't know what to feel in those minutes he was running. Their Tomboy was back! He ran so hard his boots barely touched the swaying green grass. He thought he was going to do a Thomas. He burst through the doors and saw her. The girl he'd jump in front of a bullet for. The woman who left him alone only to come home.
The medjacks left as they realized she was almost unharmed. The small cuts could be healed later but a broken heart that needed to be healed quickly. Hearing the doors slam shut he ran to Hope and hugged her so tight she could barely breathe. It was then that Hope could no longer be strong. She broke. Crying harder and harder into Galley's shirt causing it to be soaked but he didn't.
He stood there holding her as she let everything go and he would continue to do so for as long as it took.
