Comparing yourself to another

The quickest way to kill my desire to write is comparing my work to another author's work. Is my work as good as Author X's work? Is my work good enough to publish?
It took time, but I learned to doubt my inner critic; a voice that questions my work or doubts its value. When readers like work I feel is mediocre, I am delighted! When work I feel is good receives a blasé response, I am disappointed. When readers like a work I feel is admirable, my heart does the happy dance.
The gift I receive from publishing my work, even when I doubt its value, is that I feel better about my work as time passes. I feel my writing is improving and my confidence growing. I feel I am learning more about the writing process and about myself as a writer. These are good feelings, so I post even when I hear the doubting inner critic. I'm glad I click on that button labeled 'Publish.' I trust myself to be a writer of works that folks enjoy reading.
