A festival for a fighter
The sports festival finally reared its head and you felt more than prepared. You were sitting on the counter, excalibur in your lap, as you and Aizawa ate your breakfast in the comfort on one another's presence. After putting the dishes in the sink, you helped him wrap the bandages back around his mouth and snorted at how goofy he looked. The sight of him being mummified would never not be funny.
"Ready Ao?" His voice was slightly muffled by the gauzy bandages covering his mouth but with his tendency to mumble—mainly insults to Hizashi or complaining about his shitty students— before the accident, it wasn't that much harder to understand what he was saying.
"Mhm, I'm going to kick ass today." Hatsume had given your arm a tune up, making sure all the heating and new parts were working properly last night so you were feeling more ready to go than ever. Your surrogate father felt his entire body flood with unwanted warmth. He had noticed the change since the USJ incident and was so proud of who you were becoming. No longer did he see the little girl with no understanding of anything but death and pain, he saw a strong growing woman who was finally learning who she wanted to be and how there was more to life than being a Tenshi.
"I'm sure you will...today the whole world is going to know who you are who...who your family was." Aizawa and Principal Nezu had given you the option to opt out of the festival if you didn't want the world to know where [Name] Tenshi was, but you disagreed. You didn't care that they were going to know who you were, you wanted to compete in this festival for yourself. It was something you trained for, something you believed would help you find your identity as a person and as a hero. Besides, Bakugou would probably try to murder you if you didn't even try.
"I know. There is going to be a lot of people who want me dead aren't there." It wasn't a question. You knew it was going to be a lot of mixed reactions, it always was when people found out who you were, who you were related to. Your identity had been pretty low-key after your moving in with Aizawa but today everyone was going to know who you were....for good or bad it was going to happen.
He couldn't say he was disappointed with the whole world knowing you, it was scary to think of all the people that would despise your mere presence in a hero school but Aizawa believed they could all go suck it. There were too many pompous people, too many with a narrow view of a hero and why they were going to be a hero but you (and begrudgingly the softy Izuku and feral Bakugou as well) would be able to help change that narrow view of good and evil.
Aizawa believed he was surely not a caring man, not in the slightest, but the trickle of pride knowing that the whole world would know you were his ward, his...daughter and that you were so strong. It made him feel some sense of warmth...though he still swore it was only because they'd see how strong he helped you be...surely nothing else.
Aizawa was standing right in front of you, his height less towering since you were seated on the counter, swinging your legs for childish amusement. His dark bloodshot eyes were boring directly into your lilac ones and you smiled, a bitterly amused smile at how your parents never didn't fuck your life.
Even after all the training to not be afraid of failure and learning how emotions worked, after meeting people who didn't instantly hate or fear you for being born the way you were, after meeting Akito and the other kids who taught you reasons to protect other people...your parents still managed to fuck up something in your life from beyond the grave.
Your guardian took one step forward and you met him in the middle, jumping from the granite countertop and wrapping your arms around his middle, only squeezing him tight enough he'd lightly groan (whenever you had bruises he would poke them just to amuse himself so you got your much needed revenge). His bandaged hand was placed on the top of your head, he could barely feel the ridges of the dual french braids trailing down to your back. You could feel the rumble of his chest as he spoke, the lazy drawl laced with a firm, prideful conviction.
"It doesn't matter who you were. What matters is who you are. Go out there and kick ass, show them who [Name] is, show them why you deserve to be in the hero course....and so help me if you stab a student, your diet will only be calorie bars until I'm satisfied." Your whole face went completely blank before you threw your arms in the air in exasperation...a feeling Aizawa managed to bring out more than any other person in your life.
"That was once, when I was 11! How the hell was I supposed to know competing in gym class didn't include sparring." Though you couldn't see his smirk, the mirth glimmering in his eyes was enough to know he was enjoying this immensely. He'd never let you live it down, it is funny now that you aren't suspended for 'the student not dodging fast enough.' Luckily, it was only a flesh wound and they didn't even need stitches from the slice to their bicep.

"Ahh Angel face, your glowing beauty makes me feel so calm!" You and Hatsume leveled him with a gaze, seeing right through the fake, super dorky, smile he was wearing. His flirting was not a new thing but you knew your friend enough to tell he was panicking. He slumped his shoulders and groaned dramatically. "Dammit [Name]-chan I'm so nervous! Everyone has it out for us because of Baku-jerk. I don't wanna die! There are so many dates to go on, so many parties to throw, so many people to fall in love with my heroic awesomeness."
Even with the nervous chatter of the many first years around you, Kaminari's voice was loud in your ears. Hatsume snickered as she tinkered with the joints of your middle finger. The metal was sticking just slightly after Bakugou had hit it with a well times blast and she was making sure it would move properly in the trials to come.
"You're..." He perked up, waiting for some comfort from you, "a loser." Kaminari deflated instantly, pouting childishly at the soft laughter that bubbled up to escape your lips. Kaminari was goofy unlike anyone else and his dramatic reactions and declarations of his dreams were what you looked forward to daily. His nerves made you feel a bet better knowing you weren't the only one stressing about the festival. It was times that your nerves bubbled up that you wished you had somebody to suppress them.
"Ahh, don't spend so much time alone with gear head, she's tainting your innocence and making you mean to me on purpose!"
"So its better when I'm mean to you on accident?" The pink haired support student doubled over into laughter. Even not being either of their biological daughter, Aizawa's dry wit and Hizashi's dramatic teasing were becoming more and more apparent as you interacted with your friends. Both men just prayed to whatever deity out their that you didn't start to inherit Kayama's...interests.
"Never-mind." Kaminari took a look around the room packed full of all the first years..he broke out into a cold sweat before meeting your calming lilac eyes. It gave him a great idea. "Oh, let's team up, we can totally kick ass." You'd three have been working together for a while and if you were to team up for as long as possible success would be eminent, he'd totally get noticed and be able to last longer if he wasn't forced to overdue it right away to hold people back.
"That's actually kind of smart." He grinned at the backhanded compliment, deciding that you were cute enough to ignore the surprise in your voice.
"Surprising for an idiot!" Mei grinned, her goggled eyes bright with teasing mirth.
"Hey! I'm not that stupid!" They never failed to start an argument, it was the same as Hizashi bugging Aizawa until he'd argue back.
"Then why'd you get last in the entrance exams?" You ignored their banter to continue talking and making a plan. Teaming up would not only be beneficial to saving energy for the later rounds, it would be perfect to help people see that you had friends, that you were personable...kind of.
"The first two rounds of the festival are always to eliminate the weak from those with potential so if we work together, we can eliminate people easier and finish faster than alone." Kaminari agreed eagerly, all on board for kicking ass and taking first, Hatsume was in the same boat. Not only would it look good for her support course, it would be fun to kick some ass. You and her exchanged a loud high five completely oblivious to the dark lavender eyes watching your group with confusion, envy, interest, and the slightest malice; they were intrigued on why the prized 1-A students were happy with a support student and what kind of accident you could have gone through to be bandaged the way you are and to have a completely missing limb.
Oh well, less arrogant or not, your injury would give a better advantage to take you out first...many of those hostile to you hero students were on the same page.
"Plus if people see us working together, they'll have less of a reason to fear you right! They will be forced to see that you are not your family because another 1-A student and the greatest support hero want to work with you, that you know how to be a person and work well with other people!" Hatsume rubbed her calloused hands together, the familiar look taking over her face as she schemed. "Besides, when they see us get in the top from the help of my precious babies, I'll have the attention of all the heroes. They'll all want a Hatsume baby and I'll be filthy rich with all the requests for my awesomeness."
A muddled voice came on the intercom and the loud voices drowning out the speakers began to quiet. Each class was herded to their prospective door they would be exiting from and so after a quick goodbye to Hatsume, you and Kaminari made your way to the rest of your class. Midoriya was muttering and pale, looking more nervous than the rest of your class combined. You gave him a nod in greeting when he finally noticed you moving towards him, he stiffened and gave a shaky wave back, seeming a bit more calm yet flustered as he remembered your chat in the hospital. You believed he was strong, now was the chance to prove it, to prove he was All Might's successor.
You and Kaminari were going to stand by him and Uraraka when Mina grabbed ahold of your arm and dragged you over to the newly dubbed Baku-squad who was conveniently missing their namesake. He was off, leaning cooly against the wall as calm as ever. He and Todoroki looked completely unfazed at the mass of students they would be competing against. Kirishima shot you both a sharp toothed grin and although it was lacking in its usual confidence, it was still as warm as ever.
"Man, you don't look nervous at all." Kirishima muttered sheepishly, feeling like a wuss for being nervous when you and Kaminari looked leagues more calm than he felt inside.
"[Name]-chan agreed to team up so I'm pumped and ready to go!" The golden blonde gave a lopsided grin, static coursing through his veins from wanting to get out and fight.
"I'm nervous but that's not going to stop me." You were confident in your skills but that feeling of wanting to puke was growing stronger the closer and closer you got to everyone in the world knowing your location.
"That's so manly!" Kirishima was impressed with your agreement to work together. It was true friendship. He was planning to work alone to show off his own skills but working together was just as manly because heroes teamed up in the field almost as often as they worked alone. The nervous energy dissipated slightly.
"That's the spirit, I'm ready to rock this." Mina punched the air aggressively, a lethal grin on her pink features. The excitement she brought was quenched instantly, being suppressed by tense heavy breathing as the entire class silenced themselves when Todoroki and Midoriya were facing off. The dual haired boy declared war, he wanted to crush the entire class and called out those who were planning on teaming up, Midoriya especially.
That lit a fire in everyone, this was war and nobody wanted to lose anyone else. You instantly knew nobody else would team up, it was too personal now and everyone saw one another as an enemy. That was fine, you didn't care what he had to say. You and Kaminari would still work with Hatsume. It would give you a leg up if they were all focused on one another instead of splitting off to team up and be stronger together.

"HEYY!" Present Mic's voice boomed above you, making the lights flicker from the loud pressure of his vocal chords. "Make some noise all you rabid sports fans! Get those cameras prepped, media hordes! This year we're bringing you some of the hottest performances in sports festival history, guaranteed I've only got one question for you little listeners before we get this show started. ARE. YOU. READYYY!"
The screams of the excited fans was deafening, their feet stomped into the ground to make more noise, the pressure rattling the walls around you. Students all around stiffened, their backs ramrod straight and shoulders tense from nerves or confidence, only they knew. You moved to stand tall, cracking the bones in your back loving the pop they made. You moved your shoulders, feeling no pain from the healing stitching of your wings, they were still too fragile to move much but they were better and better on the daily.
At least now you wouldn't have to worry about them hurting during the festival...besides, nobody would lay a hand on them if they wanted to play 'dirty. You and Bakugou had counter measures in place for that, for as needy as he was to win, he never played dirty, he wanted to win fair and square so you both went over the underhanded ways someone would win to prevent those 'shitty extras' from being 'fake winners'.
"First up...The students who are no strangers to the spotlight, the rising stars who brushed off a villain attack with their steer willpower!" The gates to 1-A's entrance opened and flooded the room with a brighter light, the crowd's cheering amplified to the point it was almost painful. "You know who I'm talking 'bout! The hero course's very own students of... CLASS 1-A!"
The crowd went wild cheering and screaming for your class, everyone's eyes were going to be on your class today and the high praise, much of it seeming underserving, made many nervous once again. The expectations were that much higher with how much Mic talked up your class, that combined with being the 'survivors' of a villain attack made the pressure more pressing for your class to succeed. With praise and recognition like that it was no wonder the rest of the students wanted to crush 1-A, they wanted recognition too, they wanted to show their strength by kicking the famous villain defeating students and get noticed for future hero sponsors as well.
You thought the idea that media recognition determined your worth to be stupid, Aizawa was stronger than most but he was underground so he was looked over, it was a dumb way to determine power and worth but it was society's way. One that the longer you were apart of it, the more you decided it was stupid.
"They haven't been getting much recognition but these kids are full of amazingly talented kids. Welcome to the hero course...CLASS 1-B!" Class 1-B walked out being led by a haughtily smiling blonde pretty-boy. Everyone had eyes full of ferocity, you had seen them at lunch but you mainly recognized the ones taking the recommendation exams with you. The boy was strong, the lizard girl as well; definitely equal with your class in many aspects—better than some in your class as well— so you wondered if there was actually a difference in the classes besides the lettering.
Mic introduced the rest of the classes and they all came flooding out to stand beneath the elevated stage sitting in the center of the arena. Midnight took to the center of the podium, skintight outfit on display as she cracked her whip, gaining the attention of everyone. In class it didn't take long for students to place her civilian identity with her hero name when she started talking, but seeing her dressed in her costume instead of her teaching clothes, it was a sight for many wandering eyes.
"Silence!" The crack of her whip made all the noise drop to a minimum so she could be heard by everyone. "Now for the introductory speech...For the class representative, we have Katsuki Bakugou!" Everyone blanched, your face dropped into surprise like the rest of the student body at the news. Oh fuck. If nobody had a reason to hate you before, they will now. You were torn between wanting to laugh at the hilarity and wanting to bury your head in your hands.
Bakugou cooly made his way up the stairs of the podium, the students parting for him like the red sea. His hands were shoved deeply in his gym pockets and his viridian eyes raked over everyone blankly, subtly threatening those around him with just a glance. It was the most calm you'd ever seen him, he was so serious about winning he didn't even have that cocky grin on.
"I just wanna say..." His tone was disinterested, lacking in the usual screaming volume he kept it at. Everyone was leaning forward waiting for what he was going to say with bated breath. "I'm gonna win." Though slightly bland in tone his confidence wasn't missed, he didn't falter. Red orbs locked with your lilac ones, the unspoken competition burning in both of your gazes. He smirked in the slightest, you returned it. His words rang loudly for a second before the student body broke out into angry and offended yells directed both at Bakugou and class 1-A.
"We're screwed. Completely and totally wrecked because Baku-jerk decided to ruin it for everyone!" Kaminari waled in growing anguish.
"Why would you say something so disrespectful; you're representing us all!" Iida's voice rang louder than the rest of the student body. Bakugou turned a cold gaze to the blue haired speedster, shrugging a shoulder in a casual dismissal of the anger directed towards him.
"Not my fault you're all just stepping stones to my victory." He glared at Midoriya, the contempt he usually held was replaced with a burning desire to win, to defeat the green haired boy. He shifted it to Todoroki, after the heterochromatic boy's dismissal of the rest of you, Bakugou was pissed. He wanted to prove to the half-and-half to not overlook him again; especially not for a shitty Deku.
Midnight basically shoved Bakugou to the staircase, he kept his head high and moved back into the feral crowd of opponents. The crowd was going wild at how crazy competitive the entire day was going to be if it already started out this hostile.
"Without further ado, it's time for us to get started! This is where you really begin feeling the pain. The first event of the festival!" A hologram screen burst into existence where everyone in the arena could see. The screen flashed between random events before stopping on 'Obstacle Race.'
"An obstacle course...really?" At the disbelieving statement Midnight's smile was slightly more sinister as she licked her red tinted lips in...excitement. Nothing good could come from that look, you learned firsthand to be wary of the seductive— borderline crazy—hero when she smiled like that.
"All eleven classes will participate in this utterly treacherous 4 kilometer course designed outside of the stadium." It seemed like a perfect way to take other students out without resorting to blatant violence. "Now, I really don't want to have to disqualify any of you...at least for now so as long as you stay in the course boundaries, do whatever it takes to win." Lethal grins took over many of the students, you could almost taste the hostility and bloodlust in the air. "Take your places little warriors."
You and Kaminari pushed your way to find Hatsume, the pink haired inventor grinning and pulling out 'babies' as Midnight began the countdown. A few students looked like they were going to pass out from worry, others looked ready to rip their classmates to shreds. The last light on the clock turned to black and a whip cracked, startling everyone into action.
People darted past the three of you, crawling all over one another to be the first ones to make it out of the tunnel and into the course. Nobody hesitated leaving you three alone to listen to the wild screaming of the fans in the crowd and the loud, slightly biased commentary of Present Mic and Eraser Head newly dubbed 'mummy man'. Your heart rate was beginning to accelerate in excitement, you wanted to kick ass and showcase yourself as becoming a hero.
"Look, in all the fury three students haven't moved forward. Are they paralyzed with fear or are they plotting something big?!" You exchanged glances with your two friends and shared a collective nod, grins on the three of your faces. Kaminari's beating heart slowed, his panic easing and the sweat on his palms drying. Hatsume was bursting with adrenaline and excitement to show off and help her two closest best friends.
"Lets" You all got ready to run as the shouting increased. Your fists extended and Kaminari raised his to press against your left, Hatsume doing the same to your right.
"Do" The air around you chilled and panicked shouts rang clear, Todoroki made his move and now you three could make yours. After the battle trials, you and Hatsume figured that it was a no brainer that someone with such wide range long distance attacks he'd try to take out everyone in one blow so if you waited, you could miss the initial damage and still surpass everyone.
"This" You ran, Hatsume and Kaminari doing the same, quickly moving so the support student was in the middle so you could protect her sides. The crowd...and Hizashi announcing...were cheering loudly as three students, one not even in the hero course, were teaming up to work together.
You didn't skid to a stop even when reaching the ice, instead you shouted at the both of them to trust you and to jump. Neither hesitated with all the energy you could muster, planes of light formed beneath their feet, just large enough to hold one foot. They were small and as soon as your full weight was placed on the makeshift air stairs, they cracked. None of you fell though, running quickly enough on the light creations to have a foot on the next plate right the previous one shattered. You ran right over the ice and frozen robot, faltering only when the robot crashed and sent a burning breeze into your eyes.
"That was so badass!" Kaminari cried out as you all dropped from your break in concentration. You were beginning to pant as you slid down the backside of the crushed bot, instantly taking place in the top 10 of the course for now. Students were beginning to appear behind you, breaking free from their trap and rushing forward.
"Mei what do you have to slow them down."
"Nari, stun gun me!" Hatsume held up a metal pole with a curved plate at the top, she switched it on and you could hear the buzz louder than the patter of your feet on the densely packed dirt floor.
"Got it." Kaminari's body sparked to life, golden electricity sparking around his limbs brightly. He aimed both hands towards Hatsume and let the sparks fly. He still hadn't figured out how to fully control the direction and size of the discharge, only the voltage of his attacks. Instead of the normally widespread attack, all the lightning was drawn to Hatsume's baby and Kaminari cut off his quirk, his eyes a bit more hazy but nothing close to frying his brain yet.
"Do mama proud my sweet baby 38!" The switch flipped once more and all the lightning Kaminari had created shot back out of the machine and spread out, the current and amount of golden static amplified from her creation and stunning anyone who had made it past the obstacle of the robot. "Yes my precious baby, work!"
"AHHH." Many forms dropped, bodies twitching in pain as the muscles seized up from the foreign current...a stun gun indeed. Many of those hit weren't even from the hero course, most of the support students had tools to get out of Todoroki's ice faster than others so they took the brunt of the hit. Those on the outer fields of the electric shock took less damage and would be up much quicker.
A few were little more than shocked so with a well timed fist you created, you shoved a few, Kirishima included, back down the bot. The crowd jumped to their feet at the display of your flawless team's execution to press on with less competition. They were finding themselves rooting for your teamwork, the blatant display of close trust and friendship winning the hearts of many.
"They must be such sweet students to work together like that, they aren't even all in the hero course together how!"
"Strong too! Even bandaged heavily, that winged girl carried her team on those...light thingies!"
"Don't forget that guy, his golden electricity took out almost half their competition."
Only with the help of that support student, she's gotta be a genius."
"The ice kid took out more, completely alone!"
"And that blonde with the explosions, for them to propel him like that, his quirk is amazing!"
"That girl uses vines, look how much she can make to move!" Chatter broke out about about those who made the biggest show of advancing.
"Did you see that listeners! What a team up! After the first 1-A student saved her teammates from the ice, the support student's creation to amp up the 1-A boy's lightning attack literally stunned the competition! What a team, with trust like that can they take the top spots from the heavy hitters that are in the lead!?" Hizashi was grinning at your actions, he'd be shaking Aizawa in excitement if it wouldn't severely hurt the mummified pro. He didn't need nor want anymore broken ribs from Hizashi's excitable nature.
Even with the pain of the deep gash stitched on his cheek, the eraser hero was smirking from pride and listening to the chatter of the crowd. They didn't know your name yet but they were rooting for you. Hopefully it would stay that way.
A/N: Back from the dead, summer break is in session and I'm not in a country with no internet connection for me so I can update more. I got a renewed desire to make this story great and I'm working on it now, next chapter will be out soon! Thanks for sticking with me and reading. Hope you enjoy as I fuck with canon.
