Oli opened the door to the common room, incredibly surprised to see a few other people there as well.

It was his first night in the boys' dorm, and he'd woken up incredibly early and hadn't wanted to wake anyone, so he'd quietly snuck out to the common room, expecting to find it deserted.

He could see five people and recognised three. Katherine was quietly reading a book in the corner, and Sausage and FWhip were both asleep, FWhip's head resting on Sausage's shoulder. (Oli hadn't been there a full day and he already suspected that there was something going on between FWhip and Sausage, but he needed more time to figure out whether his suspicions were correct)

There was also a boy with messy blonde hair that had way too much hair gel on it and green eyes. He was simply wearing a hoodie and shorts, and he was scrolling through something on his phone.

A girl with ginger hair and elegant butterfly wings protruding from her back was sat at the table Jimmy and Katherine had been sat at earlier that day. It looked as if she were wearing a butterfly hair clip, but on closer inspection it was actually a living, real butterfly. She was wearing a rather expensive-looking dress (odd clothes to wear when she was previously trying to sleep, but it wasn't Oli's place to judge) and was doodling in a sketch pad.

Katherine and the girl with ginger hair both looked over. "Oh! Are you the new kid? Oli, right?" The ginger-haired girl asked quietly.

"That is me. Wwwwhy are you all out here?" The blonde queried, sitting down on one of the empty chairs.

"Same reason as you, I suppose. Can't sleep." The girl said with a laugh. "I'm Gem, and this is Joey." She pointed at the boy with blonde hair. "I presume that you've already met the other three. Welcome to the Early Risers Club!" Gem added jokingly. "Pretty much all of us always wake up super early and we just kind of hang out here while we wait for everyone else to wake up. Well, most of us do. FWhip and Sausage normally wake up early, come out here and end up falling asleep on each other. Everyone is like, ninety percent sure they have a crush on each other, but we have no proof."

Joey let out a laugh. "Speak for yourself, I took pictures to use as blackmail." The blonde said with a grin, nodding at Sausage and FWhip, who were still very much asleep.

Oli exchanged an amused glance with Gem. "So you just wait here till your first class?"

"Well, we have breakfast and registration first, but yeah." Gem said with a shrug, smiling.

"What... are the classes like, by the way? I'm only gonna get my timetable tomorrow, so I have no idea." Oli said with an awkward laugh.

"Here we go." Joey muttered. Gem shot him a half-hearted glare before speaking.

"Well, we basically have all the classes that a regular school would have- like English, and Art, and History- but we also have a bunch of extra classes that we have way more often. The classes you're in depends on your power- for example, you'll only have Terrain Manipulation if your power involves something like that, so your power really gets you into certain classes more than anything." Gem paused before continuing. "There are, however, two classes that we all have to take. We all have to do Battle Training- kind of just practicing fighting against each other- and we all have to do Hero Simulations. There's a simulation room that creates incredibly realistic simulations and we're thrown into a simulation of a situation a hero might have to face, like rescuing hostages or tracking down villains using very vague clues. All in all, very interesting."

"Yeah, interesting." Joey commented with a snort of laughter. "Because the time that Joel forgot we were in a simulation and smacked his head on the roof trying to fly was 'interesting'."

"Yes, because Joel knocking himself unconscious and being in the nurse's office for most of the day is absolutely hilarious- the epitome of humour." Katherine commented wryly, not glancing away from her book. Oli shot her a curious look- when you first looked at the black haired girl, it appeared as if she was holding her hand over her book for no reason, but upon closer inspection he could see that she had a small sphere of light in her palm, lighting up the words.

Gem glanced at Oli curiously. "So, what's your power?"

"I can freeze people in place- stun them, I guess- by humming, or tapping something with my finger or something along those lines- anything that creates a somewhat melodious rhythm-" Wow, melodious, that's a big word, "-and I can temporarily borrow other people's powers." Oli added with a grin, and Gem raised both eyebrows, clearly impressed. I mean, why wouldn't she be, I'm awesome.

"That's very cool, actually! And it doesn't sound like it has any negative effects either." The ginger-haired girl said, somewhat intrigued.

"It's quite tiring, actually, but otherwise, yeah, no negative effects." The blonde glanced between her and Joey. "What are yours and Joey's powers?"

"Well, I can control insects, which is incredibly helpful in my hometown, because Dawn- my hometown- mass produces honey, so I can influence the bees and sort of... speed the process up a little bit. Also, bugs are awesome, so it's cool." Gem glanced at Joey, who sighed.

"I can breathe underwater and control water. Like this-" He reached for a glass of water on the table and held his hand over it for a moment, concentrating quietly. The blonde then moved his hand upwards and the water- now in the shape of a small sphere- moved along with it. The only thing that didn't move was the glass itself. Joey carefully lowered the water back into the glass. "So, yeah. That's my power."
