Chapter 31 - Rings
Dart takes Jo to the jewelry store the next morning, to look at wedding rings. The owner smiles at Dart and says: "So this is the woman you gave the engagement ring to." Jo smiles softly and the owner looks at her ring and thinks for a second. "So what about black wedding bands?"
Jo looks at Dart and he says: "Go on, look at them, make up your own mind, because you will be picking my ring. And I am sure George can make our rings match. I'll be back in a little while." Jo watches him walk out and bites her lip.
George smiles at her and says: "You can't go wrong if you pick with your heart. Trust me." Jo nods and looks at the rings. She is not excited by any of them, until she sees a mat black ring, that's dark red on the inside. She starts to smile and picks it up. When you wear it the red can't be seen, it just looks like a black ring. George winks at her and says: "Excellent choice! The inside has the colour of your hair. He will love it. I will make sure it's his size and we'll engrave your name and the date."
He looks over Jo's shoulder and quickly switches display boxes with a sly smile. Jo looks at the box and sees it's filled with really shiny rings full of gemstones. She giggles and waits for Dart to enter the store. George speaks up and says: "Well if you are sure miss, than that's what we'll do." Dart walks up to the counter and looks at the box in front of Jo. She sees worry flash in his eyes for a second, but he composes himself pretty fast.
Jo kisses his cheek and says: "Your turn now. Bye! Thanks George!" She walks out and now Dart's the one getting nervous.
He looks at traditional rings first, but is not happy with them. George pulls out the black wedding rings for Dart too and Dart stares at them. A thin, black, faceted ring catches his eye and he touches it. George walks off and gets an engagement ring like Jo's to show Dart what they look like together. George says: "This one doesn't have a diamond like your lady's, but the design is the same."
Dart places them on top of each other and smiles. "Yeah, this is the one. I love the way they look together."
George whispers: "They will all look great together." Dart looks up at him and sees the amusement in George's eyes.
Dart nods at George and says: "You know what to do and when there's a date, I will let you know." Dart is about to walk out when George stops him.
"Hold it! I have your lady's size, but I need yours too." He measures Dart's ring finger and then sends him off to find Jo.
He finds Jo sitting on a low wall, talking to an elderly man. The man looks really excited talking to her, like everyone else she graces with her attention. He smiles and walks over to her, kissing her cheek when he reaches her. "You're not looking for a new husband already, are you?"
The old man looks at them with kind eyes and says: "I wouldn't dare. I am happy enough, just talking to her for a little while." Jo smiles at the man and touches his hand.
"Come by the cafe some time. We have really good vegetable soup, it's worth a try."
Dart wraps his arm around her and adds: "And service with a smile like that." The old man looks really happy and wishes them a good day. Jo waves at him and wraps her arm around Dart, as they walk towards the cafe together.
They sit down outside and enjoy the sun on their faces. Jake walks out and says: "Hello lovebirds. What can I get you?"
Jo looks at Jake and asks: "You're seriously asking me that?"
Jake laughs and says: "Okay, one Not Sharing Combo. What about you Dart?"
Dart grins and says: "Well, since she is not sharing, I would like to have the same."
Jake nods and says: "I will be right back."
When he comes back with the coffee and cheesecake, he hands Jo a bag. "It's a gift from Maria, she told me to give it to you, the second I saw you." Jo looks inside the bag, sees various wedding magazines and pulls the first one out. She sips her coffee and looks through the magazine, while Dart looks at her with a soft look in his eyes. Jo sees a lot of huge dresses, with a lot of lace or frills and she is not getting really excited by them.
She pulls out a different magazine and sees it has a segment about beach weddings. She stares at the pages, full of lighter dresses. Some of them are even short. Out of the corner of her eye she sees a fork move in on her cheesecake and she grabs the plate and pulls it towards her. Dart laughs and kisses her cheek. Jo glares at him and takes a bite of the cheesecake, moaning softly.
Dart takes the magazine from her and looks at the beach wedding pictures, wondering what Jo will be wearing. Jo takes another bite of her cheesecake and when she has swallowed it, she whispers: "Barefoot." Dart looks at her and studies her face to see if she was kidding or not. Jo smiles at him and nods. "Yeah, I can picture you with rolled up pants and naked feet. And I am not wearing heals on the beach. I would love to be barefoot."
Dart smiles and says: "Does that mean a little more casual wear for the rest of the body too?"
Jo thinks for a second, chewing on some cheesecake. "For you, definitely. For me, I'm not sure yet. I would love to see you in a light colored suit with a white T-shirt under it. But I want you to pick your own thing of course."
Jo leans over to stare at the magazine on the table, making a mental note of a certain style dress: the skirt is low at the back, high at the front and short enough to walk on the beach with. Dart looks at the dress too and is about to say that he thinks it would good on her when he sees the expression on her face. He smiles and manages to steal her last piece of cheesecake. But Jo gets up and sits down on his lap, kissing him deeply to get it back. He pushes the piece into her mouth with his tongue and holds her close. Jo swallows the piece of cake happily, as a blush rises on her cheeks.
Jake walks out and pretends to be annoyed: "You guys! Behave! You'll chase away the guests!" Jo laughs and shrugs, before kissing Dart again. Jake sits down at their table and looks at them with a soft look in his eyes.
Jo turns to Jake and asks: "Are you on a break? Do you have a few minutes to spare?"
Jake nods and says: "For you? Always!" Jo gets up and sits down next to him. She looks into his eyes, waiting for Jake to realize it's something serious she wants to talk about. He looks at her and waits for her to start.
Jo takes a deep breath and says: "I would like to ask you something important... It's about the wedding... Would you be willing to give me away?"
Jake blinks a few times, totally stunned and gets very emotional about it. He clears his throat and says a bit shaky: "I would be honored, little sis. Truly honored." Jo smiles wide and jumps onto his lap, hugging him tight. Jake laughs at her antics and hugs her back even tighter. He feels a few tears roll down his cheeks and hides his face against Jo's shoulder. He takes a deep breath and leans back a little. He looks at Jo, who has tears in her eyes as well and asks: "Does that mean I have to wear a suit?"
Jo giggles when she sees his face and says: "Well, you can come barefoot at least." Jake stares at her totally confused.
Dart laughs and helps him out: "The ceremony is going to be on the beach, here."
Jake smiles and says: "Seriously? You're getting married here?"
Jo nods and says: "Seriously. I feel most at home here, so this is the best place." Jo gets up from Jake's lap and sits down in her chair and says: "So do you think you could handle a wedding reception at the cafe?"
Jake puts his hands up and says: "Stop it sis! My face is going to crack from all the smiling. You make this old man way too happy." Jo laughs and looks over to Dart. Dart laughs along and winks at her.
Jo gets up and says: "I need to move a little or I'll burst. I am off to see Maria. See you later, handsome men!" She kisses Dart quickly and skips off. Dart and Jake watch her skip away and shake their heads.
Jo reaches the boutique, still full of energy and walks in. Maria is unpacking new clothes and hanging them on a rack and Jo runs up to her and hugs her. Maria hugs her back warmly and says: "Perfect timing! I was just thinking about you."
Jo steps back and asks: "Why?"
"Well whenever there's a new collection, I think about how it will look on you. And I really want you to try this one." Maria hands her a white, lace dress, with little pompoms on it. It's short, but Jo immediately likes it. Jo walks into the dressing room and tries the dress on. She comes out and Maria smiles wide at her. "I knew it! It looks awesome on you. It's yours. Gift from me!"
Jo smiles and does a turn in front of the mirror. "Thank you so much Maria, it's really cute!" Jo kisses her on the cheek and Maria's phone beeps. She checks it and stares at Jo. Jo sees the shock on Maria's face and asks her if she's okay.
"D-did you really ask Jake to give you away?" Jo nods and Maria wraps her in a tight hug and cries. Jo rubs her back, not sure why Maria is so emotional. Eventually Maria calms down and apologizes. "Jo, I don't think you know... what you just did. Jake was just talking about your wedding the other day and his thoughts drifted to his real sister. He broke down, he was really sad that he will never see her marry someone or walk her down the isle. And he was convinced you would marry in The Netherlands or France. And that he might not even be there for the ceremony..."
Her phone beeps again and she smiles, while crying again. "The reception is in the cafe? And you're not moving away?" Jo smiles and pulls Maria close for a hug again. "Jo, you really are the best thing that has happened to all of us."
Jo laughs and shakes her head. "You're wrong, it's the other way around. I wouldn't be here, engaged to the man of my dreams and confident enough to wear this dress, without you guys. You all became family." Maria and Jo stand there hugging for the longest time, letting al their emotions run free. Jo looks at her and says: "Let's close for lunch and head over to the cafe. I need to show you something in one of the magazines you gave me." Maria agrees and Jo puts her own clothes in a bag and her boots back on, walking out with her arm through Maria's.
The men are still sitting outside and watch them walk up. Jo and Maria giggle both at their stares, throwing a bit of extra hip as they move closer to them. Dart gets up and wraps his arms around Jo, the second she gets close enough. He whispers: "I love your dress babe."
Jo kisses him softly and says: "It's a gift from Maria, so you should thank her."
He looks at Maria and says: "Thank you Maria."
Maria winks at him and says: "You're welcome."
Maria whispers something in Jake's ear and Jake says: "Alright. Dart, come with me." Dart looks surprised, but Jo nods at him, so he walks off with Jake. Jo and Maria sit down and Jo looks for the dress she liked in one of the magazines. She finds it and points it out to Maria. Maria studies it up close and smiles. "That would look amazing on you, sweetie. And awesome for a beach wedding. I actually know the designer, want me to give him a call?"
Jo's jaw drops and she nods. "That would be great, Maria. Thank you!"
Maria gets up and says: "Come on. Let's go find the boys and eat something." Jo grabs her magazines and follows Maria inside. Dart is sitting at the bar and Jo sits down next to him. He looks her over with a sexy smile and winks at her.
Jo blushes slightly and turns to Jake behind the bar to order. "Jake, I would like a Long and Hard." Dart spits out his coffee and Jo smiles at Jake. Maria leans forward on the bar and orders the same.
Jake mumbles: "Should have refused to put it on the menu." Jo and Maria laugh out loud and Jake walks off to the kitchen, grumbling. He walks out with four baguettes and places one in front of Dart, before serving Jo and Maria one and keeping the last one for himself.
Dart takes a bite and raises an eyebrow. He swallows the bite and says: "Well the name is horrible, but it tastes great!" Jo nods and enjoys it. They eat in silence and Maria is the first to get up.
"I'm going back to the boutique. When you're back from Europe, can you come over Jo? I would love to put you in the new collection and take some pictures."
Jo smiles at her and says: "For you? Always!" They hug and Maria walks out.
Jake smiles and Dart stares at Jo again. Jake leans over the bar, towards Jo and says, nodding at Dart: "I think it might be better if you took him home."
Jo leans over to Dart and whispers: "How bad is it?"
Dart clears his throat and says: "Bad."
Jo licks his neck slowly and he moans in her ear. Jo smiles wickedly and says: "Come on, Mister Perfect. Let's go home." Jo waves at Jake and holds her hand out to Dart. He laces his fingers through hers and his eyes burn with desire.
When they arrive at home, clothes come off fast and they come together feverishly.
