Chapter 23 - Questions
Jo wakes up by the smell of coffee the next morning. Dart is sitting on the edge of the bed, holding a mug under her nose with a smile on his face. Jo takes the mug and enjoys the first sip with her eyes closed. "Hmm, good morning handsome."
She opens her eyes and catches his worried look, before he tries to hide it. "I saw that. I am fine. I asked for it yesterday and I have no regrets. It was fantastic... I wonder if the door is dented." Dart laughs and pulls a wild curl on her forehead. Jo asks: "Are they taking pictures to go with the interviews today?"
Dart shakes his head and says: "No, they are using the ones from the campaigns."
Jo smiles and says: "Nice. Wild it is."
Dart raises his eyebrow, not sure what she means by that. She shakes her head, making her red curls dance and he smiles wide, saying: "Ah, that would be wonderful. I love your hair like you are. Stubborn, wild and soft."
Jo leans in for a kiss, before asking: "So when is the first interview?"
"In about an hour. I told Jake about it, but I think we will be in the cafe for the rest of the day."
Jo looks at him with a questioning look and asks: "Why?"
"Remember how Jake asked us to come to the cafe today? I have a feeling they want to celebrate us today."
Jo smiles and says: "Knowing Jake, Maria, and Ronnell, there's is going to be food. I'm glad I slept for this long, thanks to you." She gets up and stretches out, before leaning down to kiss Dart. "Come on, let's get dressed."
When they arrive at the cafe, Jake shows them a table in the corner, isolated from the guest tables and perfect for the interviews. Jake pulls at a curl on Jo's head and smiles. He walks off to get them coffee, Jo takes her first sip and sees a young woman walk in, looking a bit shy. She must be the journalist for the teenage girls magazine. Jo memorized the names of the journalists and asks: "Fiona?"
The girl looks up, blushing a deep red and Jo stands up to walk up to her. "Hi, I'm Jo." She holds out her hand and the girl shakes it, smiling a bit nervously. They walk over to their table and Dart stands up to shake her hand. That makes the girl completely flustered and she looks like she is about to cry. Dart looks at Jo a bit nervous himself now and Jo asks: "Could you get Fiona a cup of coffee?"
Dart gets up immediately, knowing Jo is up to something. Dart walks off and the girl starts to breathe again. Jo smiles at her and asks her if she is okay. The girl stammers: "H-he i-is..." Her hands shake as she looks down and Jo places her hand on Fiona's.
"He is hot, isn't he? I know."
The girl looks up at her in shock and then starts to laugh. Jo laughs with her and says: "He is human. I know he doesn't look it, but I swear to you, he is." They laugh even more and Dart comes back with a cup of coffee. He sits down and leans back, waiting for the girl to start.
She opens her notebook and starts asking them questions, without making eye contact with Dart even once. They are all simple questions, about their taste in music, food, drinks, favorite color and TV show. The last question she asks is a bit different though: "How do you get a guy like Dart as your boyfriend?" The girl blushes again and looks at the table.
Jo says: "By being yourself and by being genuine. I think guys like Dart are in a fake world a lot and surrounded by fake people so much, that someone who is natural and honest, is very attractive to them. At least that is what I think. What do you say Dart?"
Dart smiles and says: "I think Jo has a very good point there, she might be right. But I also love the way she looks obviously. What I loved the most about her was that she refused to let other people or my past cloud her judgment. She found out who I was and decided on her own that I was worth her time. I feel like the luckiest guy in the world every day."
Fiona looks up with her mouth open and whispers: "That is beautiful. The girls reading this are going to love it." She puts everything in her bag and gets up, holding her hand out to Dart and says a bit shy: "Thank you."
Dart shakes it and says: "You're welcome."
Fiona looks up to Jo and says: "Thank you so much. You saved me." Jo walks around the table and says: "You're welcome. We all need a little help sometimes. And believe me, I get how hard it can be to see him up close. I wake up next to him every day and still pinch myself." They walk towards the door laughing and Jo holds the door open for the young girl.
She walks back to Dart, who pulls her onto his lap and hugs her. "That was awesome. You saved that girl and me along with it. I was so worried she was going to cry."
Jo puts a hand on his cheek and says: "That poor girl. She thought you were so hot and got totally flustered by just seeing you."
Dart looks a bit surprised and says: "Huh? I just thought she was new at the job. I had no idea."
Jo laughs and says: "You are very hot, you know? And being so young and inexperienced on basically every level, turns it into a very scary thing. I am betting some higher up boss, figured she would fail at this."
Dart plays with her hair and says: "You might be right about that. They seemed very shocked that we agreed to this interview. They even offered to just do it through email. But I know they work with beginning journalists there, some of them are still in school. And I just thought they deserved a shot."
Jo kisses him softly and then says: "That is so kind of you. I picked the perfect guy to marry."
"So the next one is for Dreamgirl? What kind of magazine is that?"
Dart pulls on her hair and says: "This one is to amuse me. It's a magazine for guys, filled with pretty girls and their background stories. With some sexy pictures printed along with it."
Jo is about to speak, when a guy wearing black-trimmed glasses comes walking up to them. He looks them over with a naughty look in his eyes. Jo gets up from Darts lap and holds her hand out to the guy. "Hi Eric, I am Jo."
He holds her hand a little bit too long and says: "Hi Jo. Very nice to meet you." Dart clears his throat with his hand held out and introduces himself. Eric shakes his hand a lot less interested and mumbles a hi.
Jo leans back in her chair, trying to calm her nerves. This guy seems shady and will probably ask some weird questions. She gets ready to answer them all fast and honestly, hopefully getting him a bit flustered.
He confidently gets out his recorder and notepad and says: "Jo, the questions will be directed at you, since our readers are men. And they want to know all about you." Jo nods and waits, while moving a bit closer to Dart. She pushes her leg against Dart's. He places his hand on her leg and smiles at her. She can tell he is a bit annoyed, but he knows she can handle herself just fine. Eric leans forward with a wicked smile and asks: "Boxers or briefs, what do you prefer?"
Jo looks him dead in the eye and quickly says: "Commando." He sits up and looks at her a bit taken aback. Dart chuckles and relaxes. He can't wait to see where this goes.
Eric asks her a lot of questions with innuendo and Jo answers them fast. Totally taking the most sexual answer every time and even coming up with a few of her own answers that are worse. The guy starts to blush and becomes afraid to look Jo in the eye. His plan was probably to make her uncomfortable, but that's not working at all.
She fires answers at him and when he arrives at the last question he seems to hesitate to ask it, but does so anyway. "Do you have any tips for our readers on how to score a woman like you?"
Jo leans forward and gives him her sexiest smile. "Well, I'd say by ignoring everything you just asked me and not using the word score. Women like me want respect and honesty. And frankly, we need men like Dart. Very experienced in satisfying a woman, rock hard abs and a kind soul. And that's a very unique package to come by. I am blessed with such a rare man." She turns her head to Dart and kisses him long and deep. Eric gathers his stuff, mumbles a thank you and practically runs out.
Dart bursts out in laughter, tears streaming down his cheeks. Jo laughs with him and says: "Maybe we should offer them one of the pictures Dirk took of me for your birthday."
Dart looks at her and says in a deep voice: "As long as it's not the final one, I could be okay with it."
Jo laughs and says: "That one will never be seen by anyone but you and Dirk." Dart looks away and bites his lip. "Dart? What are you hiding from me?"
He looks at her and knows he has to tell her. "Eh, Jake saw it, on the night we went home to get clothes for you while you were in the hospital. I tried to tell him to stay out of the bedroom, but that made him even more curious."
Jo blushes and softly asks: "What did he say?"
Jake walks up and says: "I am not sure what I said exactly and I had to look twice. But you looked like a woman, a sexy one at that and that was kinda weird. But I knew it had to be the birthday gift for Dart. And well, I was proud of you for having the guts to do that, to be honest."
Jo smiles at Jake and thanks him. Jake takes the cups from the table and asks them if they want anything. They both order a glass of water and Jo turns to Dart. "This interview will probably require you to do most of the talking, right?"
Dart nods. "Yeah, they want to know about my look. So what I wear, use and how I train. Stuff like that. It will be a two-page piece with a few pictures."
Jake walks up with the glasses of water and asks them if the next interview will be the final one. Jo takes a sip from her water and says: "Yes. The one just now was no fun. So I hope this last one is less stressful."
Jake looks her over and asks: "Not too tired yet?"
Jo looks into his eyes and says: "I'm okay. Slept very well last night. But I am getting hungry though."
Jake smiles and says: "Oh we've got you covered. We have a nice lunch planned." He winks and walks off.
Jo watches him walk away and then notices a very pretty looking woman, walking up to their table. She makes eye contact with Dart and he gets up to greet her. "Ivette, so good to see you! How have you been?" Ivette gives him a wide smile and hugs him, kissing his cheek. Jo looks at them a bit shocked. Dart didn't say anything about knowing her already. They seem very comfortable around each other.
Ivette turns to Jo and says: "I am sorry. You must think I am very rude. I'm Ivette, it's really nice to finally meet you Jo." She walks up to Jo and hugs her. Jo hugs her back, still a bit surprised by it all. Ivette steps back and looks Jo over slowly. "It's good to see that his real taste in women hasn't changed. You seem exactly like his type, from what I've seen about you. And seeing the way he looks at you..." She laughs and punches Dart's shoulder.
She sits down across from them and gets her things from her bag. Jo stares at her, blinking. And then she sees it, the color of her eyes, her hair and the slightly crooked smile. Jo's jaw drops and Ivette sees her shock. "He didn't tell you, did he?" She gives Dart a very angry look and crosses her arms.
Dart raises his hands and smiles. "I just wanted to see my two favorite women together and I figured it would be fun to see how long it would take for Jo to figure it out."
Jo snaps out of her shocked state and says: "I was about to run away. It's thanks to Ivette's kindness when she greeted me, that I didn't." Dart looks shocked and Ivette smirks.
"The dumb things my brother does when he is really in love. I have only seen it once before and that didn't end well. You're lucky she is so strong or you would have been single again. Idiot." The girls laugh together and Dart tries to get rid of the pain in his chest, thinking about losing Jo. Ivette leans over to Jo to look at the ring and says: "Wow. I have never seen a ring like this before. My brother did good. Where did you find this Dart?"
Dart tells her honestly about seeing the ring the day after the Summer Dance and dreaming of giving it to Jo one day. Ivette's eyes soften and she puts her hand over Dart's. "You finally found her. I have told you for years that she was out there. I'm so happy to know I was right." Dart gets a bit emotional and grabs Jo's hand. Jo squeezes it and smiles at Ivette. Ivette says:"Yeah, it's clear to see how much you two love each other, it makes me all mushy."
They laugh together and then Ivette starts the interview. Most of the answers are already written down and she asks Dart to read them over for her. Dart nods and says: "You know me well, that saves a lot of time."
Ivette nods and says: "Now onto the questions for the 'special' part of the three-page spread."
Dart looks surprised and says: "Three pages?" Special part?"
Ivette smiles and says: "Did you think we were going to ignore the fact that you got engaged? That there is a woman crazy enough to want to marry you? Besides, as much as our readers like to get to know the men we write about on a personal level, they love hearing about his feelings for the woman he loves even more. And so would I." Ivette winks at Jo and relaxes in her seat. "Are you ready, brother?"
Dart nods and waits for the first question. "When did you realize you were in love with her?"
Dart blushes a little and says: "The moment I saw the Summer Dance poster for the first time, if I have to be really honest. Everything that happened after that, has made me love her more and on a deeper level." Jo lifts up his hand and kisses it softly.
"What about you Jo?"
Jo looks up at Ivette and her eyes cloud over for a second. Dart squeezes her hand and she says: "It was the same moment actually. I saw his defeated look and wanted to run after him. It broke my heart to see him so sad. That's when I knew I was feeling things for him that went deeper than I initially thought. The Summer Dance itself sealed the deal though, that was one special night on so many levels."
Ivette smiles at them and says: "Wow. I wish the readers could see what I am seeing right now. But I will do my best to make them feel it through the words."
She asks about the first gift Dart gave her and Jo shows her the necklace with the two charms on it. Dart talks about the saddest time in their relationship, his favorite part of Jo's body and cheesecake. The cheesecake story makes Jo blush and Dart grins at his sister. Ivette says: "Yeah, I know it's for the magazine and all, but I don't need any details about my brother's sex life. This is about all I can handle on that front. I would like to ask Jo a few more things though, but that's just for me."
She stops the recorder and puts away all of her things, before looking at Dart and saying: "Go find something else to do already." He chuckles and walks off to talk to Jake. Jo starts to get nervous, not sure what Ivette wants to ask her. Ivette leans forward and sees Jo is getting nervous. "Don't worry Jo. I am not going to check if you're right for my brother, I know you are. I just want to make sure he is right for you."
Jo's eyes widen and asks: "What? Why?"
Ivette looks down at the table and says: "I don't know any details, but I know a bit about your past. About your ex to be frank. And I just can't quite get how you can go from a guy like that to a guy like my brother. Because Dart is so... physical... and very experienced in that area..." She can't find the right words and Jo places her hand on top of Ivette's.
"Are you asking me if he treats me right sexually? If his past and his experience weighs down on me?" Ivette looks into Jo's eyes, trying to make sure Jo loves Dart just as much as he does her. Jo smiles and says: "I see. You are a lot like your brother. You are worried he has made it all perfect in his head, but that I am not totally on the same page, right? You are worried I will break his heart."
Ivette sits up with a shocked look, knowing Jo saw right through to her. "It's okay, Ivette. I love the connection you have with him, but please listen to me. I love him more than I have ever loved anyone before. To be truly honest, I don't think I ever truly have loved anyone, before Dart. And as you have probably heard or read somewhere already, I judge people by how they treat me. Always."
She takes a breath and continues. "I think his experience helped me, on a level that a 'normal' guy never could. Imagine telling someone you like, but just met, that any kind of physical contact might not be possible. Most guys would just walk away. He didn't. He had the experience and the restraint to do things at my pace and he even took a few steps back when that was necessary. That's the most wonderful gift anyone could have ever given me."
She clears her throat and drinks some water. "I was convinced I was never going to have a normal relationship ever again. He is perfect for me. He makes me stronger, better, prettier, happier and I feel loved and safe with him. He is it, no one else will do." Jo feels her cheeks and realizes she's crying. Dart being Dart, notices it and rushes over to kneel down next to her chair. He pulls her close, kissing her salty cheeks. Jo tries to smile through her tears and Dart looks over to Ivette, who is wiping away her own tears.
He looks confused and Ivette smiles at him, stopping the recording device on the table. Jo looks at the table in surprise, thinking all she said was off the record. Ivette looks her in the eyes and says: "It's not going to be printed, but he needs to hear this. This is...wow." She gets up and says: "I am going to freshen up, you listen to this Dart."
Dart looks at Jo and she says in a soft voice: "It's okay. I might cry again though." Dart sits down and plays the recorded file and tries his hardest not to cry yet, wanting to hear every word Jo said. He covers his face with both of his hands, the second the recording stops, unable to stop his tears. Jo gets up and crawls onto his lap, wrapping her arms around him. He cries on her shoulder as she strokes his hair, crying again herself.
They are so focused on each other, that they don't notice Jake, Maria, and Ronnell running around and setting things up. Dart lifts his head from Jo's shoulder and wipes a tear from her cheek with his thumb. Jo kisses his cheeks, slowly moving to the corner of his mouth, he quickly moves his lips to hers and plants small, soft kisses on her lips, over and over, until they slowly get a grip on their emotions.
He whispers: "There are no words to describe how hearing that made me feel. You are everything to me and to hear you say the same thing... God I love you so much." They kiss passionately, until someone taps Jo on her shoulder.
