Around Every Corner

It was the next day and everyone the train shortly after the sun went up and after making sure everyone were alright and ready to move. While all of them seemed ready to move, everyone could tell Mark and Omid were not in the best conditions due to thei wounds and felt like this would become a problem for them. Christa even suggested them staying at the train until Omid and Mark will be in a better condition to move. Kenny brushed this idea off, though and insisted on them going into Savannah.

The group of ten people found themselves on the streets of Savannah not long after leaving the train and walked down the empty streets of the town in question in silence. Abandoned cars and traffic lights were the only things the group saw ever since they walked into the streets. Kenny led his group as he was the faster one to walk. If it wasn't for Omid's wounded leg and Mark's wounded shoulder, he would sprint his way all over to the docks. Omid limped and whenever he spotted a wrecked car, he leaned against it to aid him in his walking and Mark continued to clutch his wound.

Lee shifted his gaze his to Christa, breaking the silence between the group by asking her, "How's Omid?"

"His leg's pretty bad." Christa replied in worry for her boyfriend.

"I'm fine." Omid inisisted, trying to straighten his posture to walk like a normal person again.

"You're not fine, you need to rest." Christa dismissed this and looked over her shoulder at Lee, "He needs to rest."

"It won't hurt to stop for just a damn minute." Travis muttered under his breath.

Lee sighed and shifted his gaze to Mark, "What about you, Mark?"

"I'm fine." Mark replied, trying to make himself sound normal even if the group knew they were something wrong with him from the tone of his voice.

"I don't know." Jack shook his head with an uncertain look on his face, "You don't look fine to me, man."

Mark shifted his gaze to him and shook his head at him in return, trying not to worry him, "I'm fine. I'll make it to the docks."

Jack sighed and glanced at Kenny, "Ken. how much farther to the riverfront?"

"Should be just a few more blocks up ahead." Kenny gave him his reply.

Christ raised her brow, "And there'll be boats there?"

"There'll be boats. Have to be. Have to be." Kenny replied. Fromt he tone of his voice, everyone didn't know whether he really believed his own words or if tried to reassure himself in this. Before their conversation could continue, a church bell echoed across the entire town, making everyone stop dead in their tracks.

Travis stopped in his tracks with an alarmed look on his face, "What the hell?"

"We're not alone?" Ben asked nervously.

"This city might not be as dead as we thought." Jack stated.

"Keep moving." Kenny turned around to face his group, "No one's ringing that bell, it's automatic, on a timer."

"What kind of church bell goes off at twenty past the hour?" Lee replied, leaving the group silent as he checked his watch. He looked up at the church and his eyes widened when he saw someone run along the rooftop out of the sight, "Someone's up there!"

Ben narrowed his eyes at the church, 'Are you sure? I don't see anything."

"Neither do I." Jack said, having set his eyes on the church as well.

"Maybe you were just seeing things, Lee." Mark suggested.

"No. I know what I saw." Lee shook his head. Just then, Clementine's walkie-talkie came to life.

"If I were you, I'd get out of the street. Now." The male voice from the day before uttered.

"I thought you said that thing didn't work!" Christa asked as she turned around to face Lee. So did everyone else in the group with only Kenny and Jack not being suprised by this. Lee didn't answer to her as he grabbed the walkie-talkie and placed it close to his mouth.

"Hello? Hello? Are you there?!" He asked, receiving no answer from the unknown man. All he got in reply was static, disturbing a few members of his group a bit in the process.

"Is someone trying to fuck with us?" Omid questioned.

Chuck rested his shovel on his shoulder as he looked over his shoulder at something, "Ask not for whom the bell tolls..."

Kenny sighed as he turned around to look at the eldery man, "What are you yammerin' on about?"

"It tolls for thee..." Chuck finished what he was saying. The group turned around towards where Chuck was looking at, one by one and all. They all froze at the sight in front of them. The noise of the bell had brought a large horde of walkers towards them.

Travis gasped, "Fuck..."

"Everybody, run!" Lee shouted, feeling the andrenaline kick in.

Not wasting any time, the group started running down the street, making their way away from the walkers. Travis fired his pistol at the approaching undead as while Jack fired previously Andre's and now his shotgun at the undead around him., looking ready to pull out his police baton at any second if he needed to. Ben pulled out her revolver, ready to open fire at any second even if his grip on it was really shaky.

Chuck swung his shovel at each walker which got in his way, nearly taking off their head in the process as Mark stayed close to him, holding his spanner in ready as he was ready to swung it even if he knew it would leave him more pained in his shoulder while Kenny fired his pistol at one walker, killing it as he went further down the street. A walker trapped underneath a car grabbed onto his Kenny's ankle, making him fall to the ground and drop his gun. He grabbed onto a pole and tried to pull himself towards the weapon.

"Kenny!" Lee shouted in worry for his friend as he aimed his pistol at the walker trapped underneath a car and fired, killing it.

Kenny crawled away from the now deceased walker and looked at Lee with a grateful look on his face, "Little too close, don't ya think?"

"Ben!" Clementine's voice rang from across the street as Lee immediately shifted his gaze to her. He saw the walkers surrounding her and Ben, closing in like a pack of coyotes.

"Ben, help her!" Lee shouted as Ben closed his eyes in panic and ran off, leaving Clementine alone. There was one thing Ben wished he could ran away from as he left Clementine behind. He wished he could ran away from his own cowardice. Lee shook his head as he quickly pulled out his pistol and started to make his way towards Clementine, "Goddamn it!"

The thought of Clementine being in danger awoke something supernatural in Lee as he shoot down almost every walker heading towards Clem without any problem. When they were only one walker left, he pressed the trigger but only heard a click. Clementine screamed in fear, covering her eyes as the walker was only a few steps away from her.

"No!" Lee shouted, pushing himself into run towards Clementine. Fortunely for them, the undead was taken down by someone else before it could reach Clementine. The walker dropped down the ground like a ragdoll as Lee made his way to the scene, seeing who just saved Clementine. It was Chuck.

"Get her the hell out of here! I'll catch up with ya!" Chuck replied as he gave Lee an assuring nod, silently letting him know he'll be fine.

Lee nodded back at him, feeling some hesitation rise within him as he didn't want to leave Chuck alone with all these walkers around him. This hesitation left his body a few seconds later as he knew he had to take Clementine to safety. He clutched Clementine's hand and the two fled the scene, making their way back to their group.

"Move your asses! River Street's right up ahead!" Kenny shouted to his group as he stopped in the middle of the street, allowing his group to catch a break.

"That's not all..." Ben said as more walkers approached them from the opposite direction.

"For fuck's sake. Is this some kind of sick joke?" Jack asked as Travis and a regretful Ben stood right behind him.

"Give us a fucking break!" Kenny added.

"Wait, where the hell's Chuck?" Christa asked, having noticed one member of their group was missing. Her question made everyone turn around and look around themselves to see where Chuck was right now. They saw him fighting off the walkers who had trapped Clementine earlier all by himself.

"Shit, he's in trouble! We gotta help him!" Omid stated.

"We can't." Kenny replied, "We gotta go now."

Mark glanced at Kenny, "What do you mean? We can't just leave him!"

Travis stared at Chuck as Chuck took out another walker with his shovel, wondering what he should do right now. He knew leaving Chuck with all these walkers around him was wrong and something was telling him to rush in and help. His mind flew back to the situation with the woman back in Macon as well. Back then, they left her behind to be eaten by the walkers because there was no way they could save her.

But this situation was something different. Unlike this woman, Chuck could still be saved and he was not going to let him die. Travis shook his head, knowing he had to do something to help Chuck as he knew leaving him behind with so many walkers surrounding him meant a certain death to him. He knew he couldn't go there alone as it would be too risky for him, considering how many walkers were surrounding the area now. He had to take someone with him and he knew the right person for the job.

"Jack!" He called out to the blonde haired young man, wanting to gain his attention as Jack glanced at him, "You're with me. Let's go!"

"What?" Jack asked, taken aback by the sudden request as Travis wasted no time and pushed himself into run towards Chuck. Jack shook his head, knowing he had no other way but to follow him right now as he followed Travis, "Dammit..."

"Go! We'll catch up to you!" Travis replied as he pulled out his pistol and aimed it at the walker standing in his way to Chuck. He fired it, killing it with a single shot to the head while Jack pulled out his police baton and slammed it against the walker in front of him.

"They are going to get themselves killed!" Kenny shouted.

"What are we going to do about them?" Mark asked in worry for them.

"They knew what they were getting into, they'll be fine but we've gotta move!" Kenny replied, shaking his head at the turn of events especially because Jack got split up from the group. He pushed himself into run and opened a gate and ushered the others inside before slamming it shut.

As the rest of their group made their way to safety, Jack and Travis continued to make their towards Chuck. Travis fired his pistol two more times at the walkers standing in his way, hitting the two undead square in the head. He knew he had to watch out with his ammo, considering how low his group was on it since they were forced to leave the motel and how reloading his pistol in the middle of the group of walkers was a bad idea.

He pulled out his hatchet, intending to use it to take care of the walkers in his task of getting to Chuck and saving him from now. He swung his hatchet at the walker in front of him and quickly pulled his hatchet away from it's head. The walker dropped to the ground like a ton of bricks and Chuck appeared in Travis' view. Not wasting any time, he quickly ran up to Chuck.

Chuck swung his shovel at the walker in front of him, killing it and shifted his gaze to Travis, "What are you doing son?"

"We're not leaving you behind." Travis replied.

Chuck looked away from Travis after the younger man gave him his answer. He looked around himself seeing Jack was nowhere to be seen, "Where's your friend?"

Travis' eyes widened upon hearing him mention the police officer, "Jack!?"

He quickly looked around himself in worry for Jack, seeing his friend was nowhere to be seen. He instead saw a large group of walkers coming in his and Chuck's way. It was when the walker in front of the group was brought down to the floor as someone swung their police baton at it. The walker fell down to the ground like a ton of bricks with a hole in it's head and Jack appeared where it used to stand, holding his shotgun in one hand and his police baton in the other one. Not wasting any time, the blonde haired young man quickly made his way to Travis and Chuck

Travis sighed in relief as Jack made his way to him and Chuck, "Jack . I was getting worried. What happened?"

"I got separated from you a few moments ago." Jack gave him an explanation, "Those things surrounded me, but I managed to fight my way to you and Chuck."

"I'm sorry to interrupt your conversation." Chuck cut their conversation short, "But I think we should make escaping the streets our first priority."

"Right." Jack nodded at him, putting his police baton on the slot in his belt, "What do we now? Catching up to the others isn't the option right now as we will have to fight off all of these things to reach them?"

"What about the sewers?" Travis suggested, "They won't reach us there."

Jack gave him a nod, "Great idea, Travis."

"It's the best we can do right now if we want to keep ourselves alive." Chuck added in his own agreement, "Let's go. We need to find a manhole before they will reach us."

Not wasting any time, Travis and Chuck pushed themselves into run away from the walkers as Jack stayed behind them to make sure the walkers won't get too close to them. The group of three quickly looked around themselves in search of a manhole, knowing they had to hurry because the walkers were getting closer to them. Fortunely for them, they didn't had to search for long as they spotted the manhole on the other side of the street.

"Come on, you two!" Travis shouted as soon as he laid his eyes on the manhole. He ran over to it and lifted the cover of the manhole up with a groan before placing it aside.

"You two go first." Jack said as he aimed his shotgun towards the approaching walkers, "I'll stay here and keep the walkers if they will get close to us."

"Okay." Travis nodded at him and went down the ladder leading into the sewers, getting himself away from the undead on the streets.

He landed feet first down into the sewers and took a quick look around. He nodded his head to himself. He couldn't hear any walkers in the sewers so far. He knew he had to keep the possibility of the walkers being in the sewers, though as it could change when he and his group will go further into the sewers. Chuck made his way down the ladder into the sewers a few seconds later.

Travis exchanged glances with Chuck before looking up at the ladder, "Jack now!"

"I'm coming!" Jack's voiced sounded above them. Not wasting any time, the police officer tossed his shotgun into the sewers and climbed down the ladder, joining Chuck and Travis in the sewers. He picked up his shotgun, getting himself back on his feet and nodded his head at them. Travis and Chuck nodded back at him.

Travis shifted his gaze between Chuck and Jack, "You two?"

"I'm alright." Chuck nodded as he shifted his gaze between Jack and Travis with a grateful look on his face, "Thanks to you two. Thank you for coming to save me. You didn't have to risk your life for me, though."

"I know. We did it because it was the right thing to do. You may have just joined our group, but that doesn't change the fact that you're one of us and we're not leaving our people behind." Travis gave him his reply.

Chuck nodded at him, "What do you think happen with the rest?"

"I think I saw them running through one gate after I got split up from Travis." Jack replied as Travis and Chuck nodded in understanding, "They should be safe right now."

"Good. At least the rest of our group made it to safety." Travis said, gladdened by this news.

Jack set his full attention on Travis, "Don't try to pull off crap like this again."

Travis raised his brow, "What? But didn't you say...?"

"I know what I said after Macon." Jack told him, "I'm talking about something else. You didn't even gave me an early heads up of your plan. Try to let me know about stuff like this sooner the next time."

Travis nodded at him, "Yeah. Alright. Sorry, man..."

"We should get going." Chuck told the two younger men, "If we hurry, we'll find our way to our group faster."

Travisnodded in agreement and looked around himself to get to know his surroundings better, seeing there was a single path ahead of him, Jack and Chuck. "A shame we don't have any flashlight right now. It's really dark in here."

"We should keep our guard up." Chuck said, "This way we won't get jumped by anything."

"That's what I was thinking." Travis once again nodded in agreement as he pushed himself into walk, beginning to head further into the sewers. He held his pistol in ready just in case if anything was going to attack him and his group, "Let's go."

Chuck nodded and followed Travis, holding his shovel in ready, "Right behind you."

"Yeah. Same here." Jack nodded as he followed Travis as well, keeping himself behind them.

-----

The rest of the group had just reached safety, having ran into what appeared to be backyard of some house. Lee stopped on his tracks and looked around himself, trying to get a better understanding of his surroundings. He and his group were currently situated behind some kind of mansion. The whole property was surrounded by an iron fence at the back and bricks walls around the sides that looked strong enough to keep the undead at bay for the time being.

Save for a large tree, a shed and an old dog house, there wasn't anything much else to the backyard of the property. The windows of the mansion were all boarded up as well, meaning whoever had been here more than likely wanted to ensure the safety from the inside. He pushed himself out of his observation of his new surroundings a few seconds later, having heard Omid collaps on the ground with a painful yelp.

You okay?" He asked, turning around to look at the fallen Omid as the rest of the group dispersed around the backyard.

"You've opened up your wound. You're bleeding!" Christa replied as she kneeled in front of him, inspecting his injury.

Mark looked down at Omid and shook his head, adjusting his shoulder, "This doesn't look good. His wound is going to get infected unless we'll find any medication to treat it. We need to get into the mansion and treat it quickly if we'll find something meds inside."

"Yeah. I would like it..." Omid nodded painfully and looked up at Mark, "What about you, man? You don't look so good yourself."

Mark shook his head, "Just worry about your leg..."

Lee shifted his gaze to look at Kenny who was working at getting the door to the mansion open, "Kenny. How's that door going?"

Kenny looked away from the door for a second and glanced at Lee, "I'm working on it. I'm working on it!"

"Well work faster, would you?" Christa said, "You know they can smell blood."

"I'm working as fast as I can right now." Kenny explained, annoyed by the tone she used right now.

"Let me take a look at it." Mark stepped closer to Kenny, "Perharps I'll find a way to get it open."

Kenny nodded at him as he stepped to the side, allowing Mark to work alongside him, "Alright."

"What about Travis, Jack and Chuck?" Ben asked, bringing up the matter of the people they have left behind on the streets as he did his best not to look at either Clementine or Lee right now. Kenny was on this list as well, "Are just going to leave them on the streets for the walkers?"

Clementine looked up at them, "Lee. Will they be alright?"

Lee looked down at her and reassured her, "Don't worry, Clem. Jack knows to how handle himself out there and so does Travis from what I've seen from this so far . I'm certain Chuck can take care of himself as well, despise him joining us yesterday. I'm sure they'll find a way to reach our group in no time."

Clementine nodded at him , slightly less worried for them, "Okay."

"How you'll go see how Omid is doing right now and wait for the others to find a way into the house?" Lee suggested.

"Okay." Clementine gave her another nod and went off to Omid and Christa.

Lee silently watched Clementine make her way to Omid and Christa for a few seconds before shifting his attention to Ben who was working on trying to get the window open right now. He frowned at the teenager, remembering the stunt he pulled off back on the street and walked over to him, wanting to have a talk with him.

"Ben?" He called out for Ben as Ben bit his bottom lip at the sound of his voice.

He slowly turned around to face Lee, "Yeah?"

"About what happened back there on the street..." Lee started to say.

Ben looked at him with a ashamed look on his face, "I know. I don't know what happened. I just... froze up. Hasn't that ever happened to you?"

"Just hear what I'm saying to you. You put that girl in danger again, it won't be walkers you have to worry about." Lee threatened, adding a glare to clarify his point.

Ben nodded at him with a nervous look on his face, "I hear you."

Lee loosened up, "Think we can get in through one of these windows?"

"Man, I don't think so." Ben gave him an honest answer, running his hand along the barricaded window, "Whoever owned this place had them all barred up.

"Yeah...looks pretty solid." Lee nodded in agreement and shifted his gaze to Kenny and Mark, "Kenny. Mark. Find a way in yet?"

Kenny shook his head, "Door's locked up tight. Too heavy to force it without making a whole lot of noise."

"We thought we could use the pet door to get inside, but it won't open becau..." Mark started to say.

Kenny shook his head, letting out an irritated sigh, "Who the hell ever heard of a locked doggy door?"

"I was about to say this." Mark went back to what he was saying before Kenny cut him off, "It's radio-controlled, the dog wears a collar with a chip in it so the door only opens when the dog gets close to it."

"I can vouch for it." Omid added from where he sat, "My neighbor had one just like that."

Kenny chuckled, "Well, shit. Everyday's a school day."

"Alright so..." Ben rubbed the back of his head, "Where's the dog?"

Mark looked around himself and saw a dog's house in the corner. A grave with a wooden cross buried next to it. He frowned as he pointed his good hand towards the grave, "I think I know where it is."

Kenny looked in the direction Simon had just pointed towards and sighed, "Well. Shit."

Ben crossed his arms with an uncomfortable look on his face, "So, who's who's going to, you know?"

"I'll do it." Lee replied, knowing someone had to do this as he let out a sigh after those words left his mouth. He moved forward towards the grave and grabbed a shovel that was stored next to the shed. He stopped in front of the grave right after and was about to dig out the first handful of dirt when Omid's voice interrupted him.

"Hey, be careful." Omid said, "Digging up dead things isn't what it used to be, you know what I mean?"

"Yeah, I hear you." Lee nodded, shoveling out the dirt.

Mark made his way to Lee and stopped next to him with his spanner in ready, "I'll take care of the problem just in case if something will be alive down there."

"Okay. Thanks." Lee nodded at her with a grateful look on his face, "Just try not to leave yourself in a bigger pain."

Lee tossed away another amount of dirt and when his gaze fell upon the grave again, he saw a hunk of meat sticking out of the mud. The dirt was showing him bits of a dog figure, "Whatever it is, it's been here a while."

"Ew, I can smell it from here." Clementine said, disgusted by the smell, "Gross!"

"Clementine, honey, come sit with us. Let Lee work." Christa said.

Lee proceeded to shovel out the dirt until there was a hole in the ground. He could see a dog in the hole or rather what remained of it. It's fur was gone, it's skeleton was showing and it barely had any flesh. Most of it must have been devoured by maggots and larvae. It didn't took him to long to notice a collar around it's neck.

Ben stepped away from the grave, "Oh, God, the smell."

"Jesus Christ." Mark shook his head when when the terrible smell hit him. He expected the smell to be unpleasant, but he didn't expect it to be this bad. Everyone else from the group seemed to be affected by this terrible smell as well.

Lee got himself on his knees and approached the carcass. He picked up the collar with a disgusted frown on his face. He pulled it back, but it was stuck. He was about to unstrap the collar from around it's neck, but the solution came when the dog's head fell off with a sickening snap. The group let out a disgusted groan in a perfect synchronization as they backed away from the carcass.

Mark shook his head, "Okay, that is not cool!"

"Tell me when this is over." Ben said, glancing away from the grave as he fought off an urge to vomit. Christa gagged, trying to hold back a vomit, but it turned out to be stronger than her. She vomited into nearby bushes, earning concerned looks from her group.

Clementine looked at her in worry, "You okay?"

"Yeah." Christa replied, "It's just the smell."

Omid raised his brow, "Are you sure you're..."

"I said I'm fine, okay?" Christa insisted, cutting him off as Lee walked over to the door and dangled the collar next to the dog door.

"Here goes nothing." He muttered to himself as a green light lit on top of the door, followed by the clicking sound.

"Yes! Goddamn!" Kenny smiled widely as Lee kneeled down to take a look inside the mansion.

"See anything?" Mark asked.

"No." Lee shook his head, "Looks like it's been empty a while."

"Whatever you're gonna do, do it fast." Christa said as the sound of the walkers could be heard nearby.

"Okay, lemme see if I can reach up in there." Lee said as he tried to stick his hand through the door and reach the door handle on the other side, but his arm wasn't long enough to grab on to it, " It's no good, I can't get it."

Mark shifted his gaze to Ben, "Do you think you can try, kid? You have long arms."

"I dunno." Ben replied with an uncertain look on his face, "I can try, though."

He was interrupted when Clementine crawled through the hole, not giving her group enough time to react. Everyone immediately tensed up, having not been expecting her to do it as she did it without a warning.

"Clem, are you okay? Say something!" Lee asked in worry, receiving no answer from Clementine. Everyone stared at the door nervously, growing more nervous for Clementine with each passing second. The door opened a few seconds later and Clementine walked into their view.

She tossed her arms in the air, "Ta-da!"

Lee looked at Clementine with a mixture of pride and sterness on his face, giving her a gentle warning, "Good work, Clem, but don't go shooting off like that without asking first. Okay?"

Clementine looked at him with a slightly saddened look on her face, taken aback by the sterness in his voice, "I was just trying to help!"

"I know, and you did good!" Lee praised Clementine, "You just had me worried there for a minute."

"Can we maybe have this conversation inside?" Omid asked as Christa and Jessica helped him up, "My leg's starting to hurt like hell."

Lee nodded and stepped into the house, "Everybody in. Keep your eyes open."

Lee walked into the mansion and was followed by the rest of her group. He, Kenny and Ben stopped looked around themselves, trying to locate any threats for their group in the mansion. After taking a quick look around the mansion, they saw just how dusty the entire place was, making them realize there wasn't a single living soul in this place for a long time.

They walked further into the mansion, the rest of their group following them. Christa wrapped Omid's arms around their necks to help him walking as Mark kept himself closer to them with his hand once again set on his pained shoulder. They set their eyes on the sofa in the living room shortly after they entered the mansion. It was perfect for Omid and Mark to rest. They slowly walked over to the sofa and gently set him down on it, allowing him to take some rest while Mark sat down next to him.

"This place looks empty." Mark stated, eyeing his surroundings.

"We shouldn't let this lower our guard." Kenny declared, "We should split up around this place and search top to bottom to make sure we're the only people here."

"Ken's right." Lee agreed with Kenny .

"I'll take the upstairs." Kenny declared and shifted his gaze to Ben, "You go with me."

"Okay." Ben replied in understanding. Kenny started to make his way towards the staircase leading to the second floor of the mansion as Ben followed him, leaving everyone else on the lower floor. Lee looked around himsef, knowing it would be for the best if he searched this part of the house himself and got to work with this...
