3. strange gift
Laptop, NPC, script, actress, film crewーAlthough you knew it was highly impossible, those words alerted you that you might be trapped in some kind of a show, and whoever those people typing in the chat screen are, knew your name, and by the way they're talking, it seems that they knew you from watching the previous seasons?
You laughed in disbelief, but in front of your childhood friend, that laugh sounds like you were mocking him for protecting a stranger. His face flushed in anger and he opened his mouth in frustration.
"How can you laugh when you almost harm a person?" He glared at you, holding the silent girl closer to his chest.
You didn't answer, mainly because you're too absorbed in your own thought. Your intense and silent gaze creeped him out, more so when you kept clenching on the scalpel. He frowned, knowing that you have always been peculiar, so he decided to leave with the girl in his arms before you ended up becoming more unstable than you are right now.
In the end, you were left all alone on the ground. Staring at the scalpel in your hand and recalling the way how you almost stab her. Although you don't want to do it, such an action felt normal to you, as if you were used to it, and you can't help but wonder; have you ever harm a person in the 'previous seasons'? Somehow, you had a vague image of a man lying under you when you raised the scalpel, but you aren't sure.
Hence, you decided to observe the situation first. With that in mind, you got up from the ground and wiped away the dirt and dried leaves that stuck to you.
In the real world, a middle age man sat comfortably on the chair as he observed the monitors in the virtual world. He frowned, contemplating something before he turned to the woman beside her.
"She's not following what we modified her to do." He grumbled.
The woman beside him, whose face is oddly similar to the female NPC, doesn't answer.
"The NPC was supposed to verbally abuse the male lead, and according to Shu Shu's characteristic, she would stand up for him, causing love to blossom, but what is this?" He scowled. "The NPC's just sitting there looking like she had just seen a ghost!"
"It can't be helped," the woman finally answered. "Mistakes are bound to happen. We barely know anything about the VR."
"Even though the VR was made by your boyfriend?" He sneered.
The woman finally looked away from the screen, moving her head towards the middle age man, looking rather intimidating.
"Don't get me wrong Mr. Zhong. I invited you here to be our newest scriptwriter because I have trust in your skill," she then hit the table with her fist. "Not for you to be the boss of me and mocking me whenever you can."
The scriptwriter went silent at her words, there was an expression of annoyance, guilt, and embarrassment but he remained silent, refusing to apologize.
The woman turned away coldly. Since he's older than her, then she will overlook this just once.
Ever since that incident, you have been observing your childhood friend and that girl name Shu Shu from afar, and as expected, the more you observe, the more it feels like you were looking at something that came straight out of romance drama.
Not to mention those comments on top of their heads that were gushing about their relationships.
Sharing umbrella under the rain, eating lunch together during recess, sharing the same hobby, tripping at the staircase and then being rescued. The sight of them are brimming with young love that you feel slightly envious. Of what? You don't know, but you just feel jealous and empty.
How the hell can they be so happy while you feel so miserable and confused here?
With that thought, you confirmed that you, indeed, have a rotten heart, and so, making your way home, you decided to vent your frustration on your 'pets', letting the starving dog and cat mauled on the mice ferociously.
The sound of it squeaking and the way its body was teared apart soothed the turbulent in your heart and mind, and you silently agreed with your childhood friend; you really are crazy.
You watched as the mice you let go in the room gradually disappeared in the stomach of the predators, and the cat who have had its filled licked its fur in satisfaction. You extended your hand to touch it when it suddenly jumped and hissed at you.
Well, this was a natural reaction considering what you had done to it.
Still, understanding that your action is wrong and wanting to correct it is a two different thing. You got up from the floor and went out of the room, deciding to do your homework now that you have nothing to do.
You opened your bag, fishing out for your textbook when all of a sudden, what you grabbed was a palm-sized cotton doll that looked oddly similar to a voodo.
The doll was soft and its eyes are buttons. There is a heart-shaped sewing on its chest.
You frowned, wondering whose sick joke is this to put it in your bag. Eventually, you shrugged it off and placed it on top of your nightstand, focusing back on searching for your textbook as you decided to ignore it.
You immediately found the textbook you were looking for so you wasted no time leaving your bedroom.
Once the door was closed, you didn't move. Instead, you stood before the door, your grip around the doorknob remained tight, as if you were preventing something from going out. Your mind unconsciously went back to that doll, recalling back the way you held it.
Yeah, you must have been under some sort of illusion when you felt it twitching under your touch.
