Chapter 13 - Whispers in the Night

"WELL, I think that gives us a great head start on the project." Jason said through your computer speakers as he smiled at you with his heart stopped style.

"Yeah." You replied as you forced yourself to look away.

You had learned really quick not to fall for his charm. Otherwise you would never get him to do his own work. When Brady had first told you about how Jason could bat his eyes at a teacher to get out of work, you thought that he had been joking. But the first week in class had shown you that was very much true. Because the professor was very quick to give into the three of you working on a project, that should have had only two people involved.

"Sooooo, when are you coming back hooooome?" You heard Jason ask in his sweet voice.

Which told you he was gearing up to try and swoon you again. You slightly sighed as you braced yourself against him. Then you looked back at him. Only to see him giving you his biggest puppy dog eyes. Which almost instantly melted your heart. And would have, if you hadn't quickly closed your eyes for a moment before you looked back at him.

"I'll be back next weekend." You said as you slightly smiled back at him. "My dad said that we'll be leaving on saturday if nothing crazy happens between now and then."

"Crazy huh?" Jason slyly said as he stroked his chin with his fingers.

"Don't even think about it Jay." Brady said through his screen. "You and I already have to make up for the swim practice you missed last friday from your pouting."

"Pouting? From what?" You asked as you gave them both a confused look.

"Well you see..." Brady started to say with a smirk on his face.

"I was not pouting. I was simply stunned at the sudden news is all." Jason said as he tried to brush it off. "And besides, we're talking to her now. So there's no reason to bring that up again. Now is there?"

"You were pouting because of me?" You asked as you gave him a stunning look. "But why?"

"Because you never told us that you were going out of town." Jason quickly said as he gave you a pouty face.

"Which I have apologized for several times now." You replied as you rolled your eyes.

"But you still left." He pouted back.

"Uuuugh. Your worse than Noctis." You groaned as you leaned back and placed your hands behind you to brace yourself up.

"What was that?" You heard Noctis ask as a dark figure approached you.

Great. You thought as you looked over at the figure as Noctis' face came into view from the light of the computer screen as he sat down beside you. "Hey."

"Hey." Noctis said as he got comfortable beside you and looked right at you. "What were saying about me?"

"Jason's still upset that we left like we did." You explained as you looked at Noctis.

"Not we, you." Jason firmly stated. "You never told us that you were leaving."

"I forgot about it until the last minute." You said as you slouched back on your hands as you leaned back. "I was more focused on other things at the time."

"Like what?" Jason questioned as he gave you his usual devilish grin.

"You know. School. Work." You explained as you were starting to lose patience with having to explain it, yet again. "And like I said, we had made plans to come camping two weeks prior to leaving. But a lot had happened in class and at work before we left."

"Speaking of that...." Noctis started to say before he leaned over and put his lips right beside your ear. "Someone said that they were going to explain what had happened that night at the restaurant."

"I know. And I will." You quietly said back to Noctis. "But not right now. Okay?"

"Alright." Noctis said as he gave you a firm look. "I'm still holding you to it."

"I know." You replied as he moved away from you again. "And I'm getting off now."

"No rush." Noctis said as he stood up. "Prompto's finishing up in the shower as we speak. Once he's done, it's your turn."

"Okay. Perfect." You smiled back at him.

"There's a shower there? But I've never seen a shower at any of the haven's that we have camped at." Jason said in shock.

"You? Camping? In the woods?" You asked as you gave Jason a stunned look as Noctis walked away. "I find that hard to believe."

"What? You don't think that my gorgeous self can't handle getting dirty every once in a while?" Jason said as he whipped his head back and ran his fingers through his hair.

"That's not what I meant." You said as you sat up and rested your head in your hands with your elbows on your knees while you sat Indian-style.

"I'll have you know that I'm one of the top Eagle Scouts in Insomnia."

And you would have believed him, if Brady hadn't started shaking his head as he looked down. Which told you that he may be a scout, but he certainly hadn't gotten Eagle on his own. Which of course made you wonder just how much of it he had actually done on his own. Compared to how much had he charmed the rest of the guys into, to get through the hard stuff.

"Something tells me that you aren't telling the whole truth about that." You said as you crossed your arms as you looked at him.

"I must certainly am telling the truth." Jason replied in a hurt tone. "Just ask Brady."

"He actually is one." Brady said as he slowly looked up. "In fact he's the current Senior Patrol Leader for the senior troop leaders. Only the Scoutmaster outranks him."

"Really?" You asked unconvinced. "Can you honesty say that you actually remember anything about camping?"

"Of course I do." Jason said as he leaded closer to the screen. "I'm not just good looks you know."

Even Brady rolled his eyes at that comment as Jason gave you ha devilish grin back.

"Well, either way. I have to go. It's late and I don't want the computer light to attract attention to the camp. And besides it is almost dusk here." You said as you put your books back in your bag as you tried to avoid his eyes. "Same time tomorrow?"

"We can't tomorrow." Brady chimed in.

"Huh?" You asked as you quickly gave Brady a stunned look.

Which didn't seem to faze Brady. But it did send Jason into a frenzy. He started stumbling over his words as he gaped at Brady.

"But...wha.....huh?"

"Using real words might help Jay." Brady said in a calm tone as he started putting his books away as well.

"Fine.'' Jason said as he straightened back out and put back on his usual boyish face. "And what do we have tomorrow that is more important than seeing my princess?"

"We'll discuss it after we hang up." Brady said in a firm tone before he looked back at you. "Until next time (y/n), stay safe. And we'll see you back online in two days."

"But what do you have to do tomorrow?" You asked as you curiosity was peaked.

"Yes, won't you enlighten us?" Jason asked in a somewhat demanding tone.

"It has to do with a promise that we made to someone." Brady said in firm tone, which made Jason freeze as he seemed to be instantly understand. "Or did you forget about it?"

"And what is that suppose to mean?" You asked as you gave them both a confused look.

"It's nothing for you to worry your pretty little head about." Jason said as he quickly recovered from being stunned and put on his usually charmed look as he brushed his hair out of his face. "Now don't let Princey steal you away from us. You hear?"

"What?" You asked as you gave them a perplexed look from the sudden change. "What are you..."

"We'll talk to you in two days my darling." Jason said in a more flashier style then usual, which made you nervous.

"Until then," Jason continued as he looked at you and gave you a serious look, "stay safe."

Then before you could say or do anything else, they both signed off. Which left you staring at a blank screen. And more confused than you had been at the beginning of the conversation. It was obvious that something was up. But it was very clear that they weren't about to tell you anything about it. Which told you that there was only one person who was capable of making someone act like that.

Which made you quickly close your computer and put it back in your bag. Then you stood up to put your bag back in your tent. But as you walked over to the tent, you glanced around to see if you could spot the only person that you knew could be responsible for Jason and Brady acting strangely. And once you stopped him, you quickly dashing in and dropped off your bag by your sleeping bag. When you came back out, you made a beeline straight to him.

"Hey dad." You said in a sweet voice as you clasped your hands behind your back in an attempt to keep your hands steady.

"Hey kiddo." Your dad said as he turned and looked at you. "Prompto just got back if you want to grab your stuff for your shower."

"That sounds fine. But, can we talk first?" You asked as you gave him a worried look. Please tell me he hasn't figured out something about what had happened the other day and not told me about it.

"Sure." Your dad said as he searched your face and saw the underlying concern in your eyes.

Then he turned to King Regis, who he had been talking with. "If you'll pardon me your majesty."

"Of course." King Regis said as he nodded back to your dad before he turned and nodded at you.

You gave King Regis a slight nod before you walked away from them and over to the side of the camp where no one could hear you. Your dad walked beside you and kept glancing at you until you stopped right at the edge of camp. Then he searched your face as the two of you turned to face each other. He wasn't sure what to expect, and he certainly wasn't prepared for the question that you were about to ask.

"You did you ask Jason and Brady to help you out with some crazy surveillance at the school?" You asked while searching his face.

Your dad gave you a flat look as he scanned your face for a minute. It appeared as if he was debating if he should respond or not. Which automatically told you that he had done something. All you had to do now was figure out what and to what extent.

"Now why would you ask such a random question? Your dad asked as he continued to search your face.

"Oh I don't know." You said as you rolled your eyes before you gave him a hard look. "Perhaps the fact that they can't meet up with me tomorrow because of some promise that they made to someone. You wouldn't happen to know anything about that would you?"

Your dad relaxed as he leaned on one foot and crossed his arms in front of him. "Now how am I suppose to know who they make promises to? Do I look like their dad?"

"Of course not." You quickly said as you continued to search his face.

The certainty that you had earlier, was quickly starting to fade as he stood there look impatiently at you. Nothing about his posture told you that he had had anything to do with them. Which made you start to wonder who else it could be.

Perhaps it wasn't him. But if it's not him, then who? You thought as you looked away from your dad as you tried to think of someone else. Korn perhaps? No. He's to busy to bother with something so trivial as this. Maybe Tracy? No it can't be Tracy. She wouldn't do that. Would she?

"Would you mind telling me what's going on?" Your dad said as narrowed his eyes at you. "You have been acting strange ever since you started attending that University. Did something happen that I should know about?"

Suddenly you flashed back to your last dream of hands and ecstasy. Then you could practically smell that spicy scent as Loqi's smiling face flashed in front of your face. You slight shook your head as you tried to clear your head again and focus on your dad instead. You didn't want to tell him. Not yet anyway.

At this point he would just simply fly off the handle and drag you back to Insomnia. Then he would probable drive to the school to hunt Loqi down and beat the shit out of him in some alley somewhere. Which was the last thing you wanted. Especially since you still weren't one hundred percent sure if he had indeed been in your room or not.

"No." You lied as you dropped your gaze from him as you tried to hide your eyes from him.

You knew that your dad was amazing at reading your body language. And that he was practically psychic when it came to reading someone's face and seeing the truth before they said a single word. Dealing with him on his own in Altissia had taught you that. And it also explained how he knew everything about you without you saying a thing.

Of course, there was also the fact that he had eyes everywhere with the surveillance cameras and police that were constantly roaming the streets. And you didn't think that there was single person in Altissia who didn't know who he was. He just seemed to be everywhere. Especially when it came to places where you went.

"If your trying to reassure me, your failing miserably." You heard your dad say as he stood perfectly still in front of you as you started to nervously shift your feet.

You hated to lie to your dad. But what were you suppose to say. 'I think someone snuck into my room and fingering me while I slept.' He would flip out.

And without hard evidence, your dad would go to the extremes all over again. In fact your biggest fear was that he would take you back to Altissia, and away from your home and friends all over again. Which you didn't mind your god mother or Weskham. But you felt like you had just gotten back. And you really didn't feel like leaving all over again.

"I'm just wondering dad." You said as you slouched your shoulders. "Jason and Brady said that they wouldn't be on tomorrow because of a promise to someone."

"Did they say who it was with?" Your dad asked as he narrowed his eyes at you.

"No." You said as you looked down and shook your head. "All they said was that they wouldn't be on tomorrow."

"Then why would you think that I had something to do with that?"

"Because it sounds like something that you would do." You said as you looked back up at your dad with a firm look.

"Fair enough." Your dad said as he nodded at you. "But this time I have no idea what their doing."

Your dad then stepped up to you. As he did, you nervously dropped your head. You were afraid to look at him for fear that he might see the truth in your eyes. And you certainly weren't ready to share that truth with him at this moment.

"And in case you haven't noticed, I'm a bit busy with keeping the camp secure and free of boredom and unfriendly monsters." He said as he reached over and lifted up your chin so that you had to look at him as he gave you a reassuring smile.

You couldn't help but to give him a slight smile back as he pulled you into his arms. He may not have anything to do with what was currently going on in Insomnia. But you just couldn't shake the feeling that he knew more about it then what he was leading you on to believe. But it didn't look like he was about to give you any information at the moment though.

"How about you gather up your shower stuff and we'll head down to the shack so that you can clean up for the night?" Your dad quietly asked as he slowly rubbed your back.

"Okay." You replied as you decided to follow him and drop the whole thing for the moment.

~~~~~~~~~~0~~~~~~~~~~
"Did they find out anything?" Paul asked as he held his phone to his ear as he looked out over the lake and watched the closest Catoblepas as it lazily looked around as it searched for fish to eat.
"They are actually quite resourceful. I'm a bit surprised that you haven't offered these two jobs with us after they graduate." Paul heard Tracy's sweet voice say through his phone. "These two would be a great asset to the team."
"I'll consider it." Paul said as he glanced down for a moment.
He really didn't like to hear her praising some other guys while he was so far away from her. Even though that he knew that she would never do anything with guys that were young enough to be their own sons. But it did nothing to the jealousy that was nagging him as he stood outside of the shack and waited for you to finish up your shower.
All he wanted at that moment was to wrap his arms around her and pull her close as he kissed her. But he knew that it wouldn't end there. He wouldn't simply be satisfied until his hands and lips had touched and kissed every inch of her soft skin as he explored her delicate curves. And the thought of it was starting to tighten up his pants as he pictured her moaning back at him as he slowly devoured her.
"Well, if I were you, I would give it a serious consideration." Tracy's voice said with a serious tone. "Because these two seem to on the right track over here with one particular student. We haven't been able to catch him doing anything odd just yet. But he does seem to frequent the café a lot."
"Brian's café?" Paul asked as he mind snapped out it the erotic train of thought that had been playing out in his head.
"One in the same love. In fact I think Brian was considering to offer him a job since he's there so much. But he wanted me to ask you if he should or not first."
Paul thought about it for a moment. If he does have anything to do with her acting strangely, it would be easier to keep an eye on him if he is somewhere that I already have under surveillance. And especially since the school had only allowed me certain freedoms while she is on school campus. Perhaps this could work out in our favor.
"What would he be doing?" Paul asked Tracy as he started glancing around the area surrounding the shack once again.
"Brian was thinking about having him cooking in the back with him and possible washing dishes. This way (y/n) and him aren't constantly having to stop and wash dishes."
"Are the camera's installed in the kitchen and back area yet?"
"They just finished that up today. And I think they did a great job of disguising them. Even I had a hard time spotting them."
"Good." Paul said with a slight sigh.
He had been stressing the fact that you had been able to point out every single camera in Altissia that he had had installed while he was in charge of security. And the last thing that he needed was for you to notice them again at your work. He really didn't want another blow out like when you freaked out from the fact that you were under constant surveillance. Which was why he had had Tracy handle it this time. Her scouting and observation skills were the best out of everyone he knew.
"Tell Brian to go ahead and hire him. It'll help out in more ways than even he will know about." Paul said as he had his back to the shack's front door, that suddenly opened as you stepped out of the shack and into the early evening light.
"Hire who? Did Brian find someone else to help out around the café?" You asked with a somewhat excited tone. "That would be helpful. The place is getting to be too busy for just the two of us to handle anymore."
"I'll call you later." Paul quickly said to Tracy before he hung up the phone and turned towards you. "All done?"
"Yeah." You replied as you gave your dad a confused look. "Who were you talking to?"
"Tracy of course." Your dad said before he nodded towards the shack. "Did you turn off everything and clean up?"
"Of course." You said as he walked past you and opened up the door to do a quick glance inside before he closed the door again and locked it back up.
Then he turned and started to lead the way back to the camp. "Shall we?"
"Sure." You said as you fell in step with him. "But your ignoring my question."
"What question?" Your dad asked without looking at you.
"What question? You know what question. Who did Brian hire? Do I know them?" You asked as you tried to read his face.
"I have no idea." Your dad said as he kept walking. "You'll just have to see for yourself once we get back."
"But you just said....." You started to argue back before your dad interrupt you.
"Brian just asked Tracy and I if we thought you would mind if he hired another student from your school to work at the café." He said without looking at you.
"So there's a chance that I might?" You asked as you were starting to run faces through your head of all the students that you had had classes with.
"There is." He said before he looked right at you. "But there is also the chance that you don't. There are a lot of students at Central U. So you won't know until we get back and you see for yourself."
"Yeah." You said as you walked away from your dad and looked at the ground in front of yourself. "I suppose your right."
"But we still have a few days before you have to worry about that." Your dad said as he watched you carefully. "Tonight you need to rest up. The King and I want to show the three of you a few new fighting moves that will require our feather friends that we've been taking care of."
"Really?" You said as you quickly looked at your dad. "We're going to fighting our birds?"
"It won't be against them. But instead, with them." Your dad said back with a slight smile.
"Oh thank the six." You replied as you gave him a relieved look. "And how are we going to do that?"
"I'll show you." Your dad said as he smiled back at you. "Tomorrow. Okay?"
"Yeah. Okay." You said as you beamed at him.
He smiled back at you and wrapped his arm around your waist. Then he slightly pulled you closer to him as the two of you continued to walk back to camp. You smiled back at him and wrapped your arm around his waist as well. Then you grinned even more as he kissed the top of your head.
"I love you kiddo." He quietly said as you continued to walk.
"I love you too dad." You replied as you gave him a slight squeeze.
~~~~~~~~~~0~~~~~~~~~~

The next morning seemed to come way too early. But then again, you hadn't really sleep that well the night before since you were too excited to sleep. And all you heard was Prince as he tried to snuggle as close to you as possible from the outside of the tent. Your dad ended up giving up and letting Prince into the tent just so the three of you could get some sleep. Even if that meant sleeping right next to a snoring chocobo.

But after a quick breakfast for everyone, you soon found yourself out in the field again, sitting astride Prince as you waited for instructions from your dad. As you sat there though, you could feel the excitement of it all coming back. Especially since Prompto looked like he was just as excited to begin as you. Noctis and Gladio on the other hand look slightly bored. Which made you wonder if they had had similar training already.

Their faces told you that wasn't the case though as your dad started to explained to everyone what he wanted you to do. "So today you'll be starting off by working on how to hop into the saddle without your bird stopping as it jogs along. The reason for this is to show you how you can use the birds to make a quick escape from a fight out in the field if you have to. Now in order for this to work, you have to use a certain whistle that only your bird will respond to."

"A whistle?" You asked as you watched your dad walk up to each of the guys and hand them a small, silver, straw-looking whistle that was no bigger than your middle finger. "Don't you just whistle with your lips to get them to come to you?"

"That would work if they were dogs or in a close enough proximity to you." Your dad said as he held out a whistle to you for Prince. "But what if your hurt? Whistling might not be an option for you. Where if you use this whistle, you can hopefully blow enough air through it to at least let his attention."

"Oh." You quietly said as you looked again at the metal pipe as it shined in your hand.

"Now each bird has a different pitch or rhythm that they like. That is how they know who you are trying to call. Without that, you would simply get over loaded with birds and it might not include your bird." He said as he looked at everyone.

"What do you mean?" Prompto asked.

"I'll show you what I mean." Your dad said before he turned his bird away from everyone and rode a bit away from everyone before he got off of his bird.

Then he turned around and walked back towards the group. You watched the bird as it simply cocked his head at him at first before it started scratching at the ground as if it was looking for worms to snack on. But you noticed that it didn't make any effort to follow your dad like Prince had been doing ever since you had saved him. Instead, his bird didn't seem to be even slightly interested in what he was doing as he walked back over and stood in front of the group.

"Now," he began as a he placed his hands on his hips. "I want each of you to first figure out what whistle will get your bird's attention."

"And you going to do this by trying different patterns and pitches with the whistle." He said as he held his up so that everyone could see his. "They can be one long low whistle, to several short high pitched ones. But you won't know until your bird starts heading towards you."

"Like this." Your dad said as he put the whistle to his lips and started going through a couple different patterns and pitches.

But it wasn't until he did one long one and two short whistles at a medium pitch that the bird finally looked up and came trotting over to him. Once the bird reached him. Your dad held out his hand and the bird walked up and pushed his head on your dad's hand. You couldn't help but to smile as your dad grinned at the bird as he started to pet the bird before he turned back to the group.

"Now I want you to do the same thing with your bird. Use the whole field so that your bird doesn't get confused from all of the different whistles going. His majesty and I will keep an eye on you. We certainly don't want another attack from sabertooth around here. We've already seen that they're not very happy with us being here." Your dad said as his bird reached his head over your dad's shoulder so that he could pet him.

Your dad gave his bird a quick glance before he started scratching his neck. His bird instantly started cooing at him as he closed his eyes and simply enjoyed the affection from your dad.

You couldn't help but to smile yourself at how easily your dad had been able to do that with his bird. It just showed you that there was still a lot more that your dad knew that he had never let on to before. Which made you secretly pray that he would be able to show you all of his secrets one day.

"Now spread out and get started. This is the first lesson for the day. We have a couple others after this one." Your dad said as he dropped his hand and took a step away from his bird, who seemed to straighten up and puff out his chest as if he was in charge.

"Right." You said as you turned your attention to Prince. "You heard him boy. Let's go find a place and get started."

Kwek! Prince replied as you moved him away from camp and more towards the lake.

You wanted to stay away from the woods for fear of the sabertooth. Once had been more than enough for you on this trip. And Prince seemed to agree as he lightly jogged over to the nice clear spot. But once you stopped and climbed off of him, he gave you a confused look.

You smiled at him as you started to walk away from him. "Good boy. Stay there. Okay?"

Kwek! Prince called back and started walking towards you.

"No." You said as you stopped and held out your hand as you tried to get him to stop moving.

Which he did as he cocked his head to the side again. Kwek!

"I know you want to follow. But you can't yet." You pleaded with him as you heard the faint sound of whistles going off behind you. "Okay?"

Kwek! Prince called again and dropped his head as he started scratching the ground.

Good. I think he gets it. You thought as you turned back around and started walking away from him again.

Prince saw this and slowly started following you again. But then when you turned around, he quickly dropped his head and started scratching the ground again. You gave him a confused look as he scratched up a rock and found a worm that he immediately started to nibble on. You smiled as you shook your head at him and turned around again as you started walking away once again.

I guess he must have smelled the worm. You thought as you walked away.

Once again, Prince lifted his head and started to follow you. Then when you stopped, he dropped his head again and started scratching at the ground as he acted like he hadn't moved. Which made you curious. So you started walking away again. Only to turn around and see that the distance hasn't changed one bit.

What the hell? You thought as you stood there scratching your head as you tried to figure it out.

But that was when you noticed the overturned rock from the worm and realized that you were nowhere near it anymore. You sighed as you looked from the rock to Prince, who was scratching at the ground as he looked for more worms. You knew then that he had been following you the whole time as if this was a game.

Okay. If you want to play like that. Let's play. You thought as you turned your back again to Prince and slowly started to walk away, only this time you kept glancing over your shoulder.

And sure enough as soon as you moved, he looked up and started following you. Which made you smile. He was certainly attentive to you. Too bad that wasn't part of the exercise.

That was when you got an idea and took off running away from Prince. Who quickly sped up and started chasing you. You couldn't help but to glance back at him and start to laugh as Prince was running after you. That was until he got close to you and you quickly changed directions and started running the other way.

Kwek! Prince called and quickly changed directions and was soon chasing after you again.

You laughed at him again before you changed directions. Prince quickly followed and soon both of you were darting in different directions as you played the funniest looking game of red light green light between a person and a bird.

"Is that suppose to be part of the exercise?" Prompto asked Noctis as they paused and watched you.

"I don't think so." Noctis said as he slighty shook his head. "But they do seem to be enjoying themselves doesn't they."

"It looks like she really is a natural when it comes to these birds." King Regis said to Paul as they stood off to the side and watched everyone. "I've never seen anyone take to these birds as quickly as she has."

"Neither have I." Your dad answered as he watched you with a smile. "But then again, she's no ordinary kid either."

"She most certainly is not. And I have a feeling that she's going to be break all kinds of records as she grows up. She could even possibly break some of your records." King Regis continued as they watched you and Prince continued with your makeshift game of tag.

"And I wouldn't have a problem that." Your dad said as he grinned at you as you laughed and played with Prince.

**********Author Note**********

I do apologize that this too much longer then I had intended. But after a bit of personal struggle with my true love and husband, I had to take a slight break so that I could try and mend wounds that I had no idea I would open. I had never intended to open those wounds and I never want to see them again. Luckily enough, he doesn't either.

And now with the training taking a different twist, you start to learn more about Prince then you thought you never would. That is until you notice something in the rocks that you real wish that you hadn't seen. Which leads to more then just a simple practice session.

Thanks for reading. :)
