Chapter 75 - Tenebrae Promises
You figured that you must have fallen asleep on your dad for the rest of the train ride. Since you don't remember anything about the last part of the trip except your dad moving under you when you heard the announcement that you were arriving in Tenebrae. You slowly opened your eyes as the train pulled to a stop. Then as you dad shifted under you, you slowly sat back up and looked around. You couldn't see anything outside the windows as the train came to a complete stop since it was night time now.
"Well, it looks like we're here." Your dad said while he stretched out as he sat up.
"Wonderful. And since it's so late. You can stay with me at the Fenestala Manor tonight. Then you will be well rested before you head out in the morning if you like. The first train back to the Port will be leaving at dawn." Luna said with a smile as she stood up and grabbed her bag.
"That's very kind of you to offer." Your dad began as he stood up and grabbed his bag. "But your brother might have an issue with that. Him and I don't exactly see eye to eye."
"Let me handle my brother." Luna said with a smile. "You just keep a level head about you. We are under the empire's rule here you know."
"I know that all too well." Your dad replied as he looking around nervously.
"But your protected, as long as you're with me." Luna replied with a smile. "Which is why I must insist that you stay with me at the manor. I can't protect you unless your inside the manor's walls."
"It's alright dad." You said as you gave him a comforting look. "It will only be for tonight. Tomorrow we can get up early and head back to the train."
Your dad gave you a nervous sigh as he looked at the two of you. "Fine. But only for tonight."
"Of course." Luna replied.
Then the three of you departed from the train and walked across the platform. After crossing the platform, you desended down the stairs and over to the first bridge that would take you to Tenebrae's main entrance. You tried to make out the surrounding area as you walked beside your dad. But it was simply too dark to see anything past the bridge and walking path as you followed Luna as she lead the way to a second bridge. Your dad was walking really close to her as he kept looking at everyone. You weren't sure anymore though if he was doing it for her or for the two of you.
As you you coming across the second bridge, you came to the main entrance. You were blown away by the beautiful structure of the buildings on either side of large entrance. The thin line-like gateway made it look more like the gate to a garden, opposed to a city. As you approached, two guards moved out of the shadows and blocked the doorway.
"We're sorry, but we can't let you in." One of the guards said. "If you want to enter you'll have to come back tomorrow during our visiting hours which are from dawn to dusk."
"What?" You asked with a questioning look. "Don't you know who....?"
Suddenly two medium sized, long haired, dogs came running up. One was as white as snow, while the other was as black as night. You froze in your tracks as they came up. You knew better than the run or make any sudden movements as they came up. Because if you did, they might think that you were a threat.
But instead of checking everyone out as they came up. They went straight to Luna and both stared at her with their tails wagging happily. Luna beamed brightly at them both as she knelt down and started to pet both of them. You couldn't help but to smile as both dogs started wagging their tails more as they got excited. Then in a quick moment, both dogs quickly jumped up and started to lick her face.
"Miss, you really shouldn't .......?" The first guard started to argue as he was getting ready to grab both dogs.
But right as he stepped forward, the green shawl fell from her head as the dogs slightly pushed her back as they started to get playful. She started laughing at them and happily sat back on her heels as she continued to pet them.
"Lady Lunafreya?" The guard said in shock.
"You really shouldn't let them do that Luna." You heard a smooth voice say. "You'll teach them bad habits."
"Their just happy to see me is all." Luna replied as she nuzzled the white dog's nose.
You then turned and saw three people come walking up to the three of you. One was a woman who looked like she was a bit older than your dad. But she seemed nice as she beamed at Luna. But she didn't say anything as she stood just behind the guy in the middle. Instead she had a look of great relief as she watched Luna. Which told you everything that you needed to know, she was no threat to any of you.
The guy in the middle was a different story. He had pure white hair and was almost a whole foot taller than the woman. His face was a lot younger. But his look wasn't anywhere near as pleasant as her's. He almost had a scour on his face as he gave your dad a hard stare. You noticed that he gripped his sword's hilt that was attached to his waist by a dark purple belt that contrasted his white and grey outfit.
On his other side was a blonde kid about Ignis' age with green eyes, who seemed to be staring holes into you as you stood there quietly. You weren't sure who he was , or why he was looking at you like that. But at the same time, you weren't sure if you wanted to know. So you tried to keep you gaze from him for the time being.
"Welcome home Luna." The guy in the center said in a cold tone as he continued to stare at your dad. "I'm glad that you made it home safely. Despite your present company."
You were slightly taken back by his words as he stared hard at your dad. But as you looked at your dad, you saw the same look back. You had learned through your lessons with Korn a bit about the mission where Niflheim had almost captured your dad the first time. And as you watched the two of them. You got the feeling that he had been apart of that, since there was a lot of tension there.
"The company was perfect Ravus." Luna said as she stood back up. "And you should be kinder to our guests."
"Tst. He is far from a guest to me. Not after the shit he's done. And let's not forget the fact that he works for the man responsible for our mother's death." Ravus said as he narrowed his eyes at your dad.
"Like I told you before, that was not his fault. He had to leave in order to protect Prince Noctis." Your dad said back. "What would you have done?"
"I WOULD HAVE FUCKING STAYED AND FOUGHT!" Ravus thundered at Paul. "Not ran like a coward!"
"And put Luna at risk?" Paul asked.
"She was already at risk!" Ravus roared back.
"Enough Ravus!" Luna yelled at him. "I won't stand here and listen to you arguing about this again."
"Tst. Whatever. I'm done with him anyway." Ravus said in a tense voice as he turned on his heel and walked back towards the manor with the blonde kid right at his side.
Luna sighed after he was out of ear shot. "I apologise for my brother's behavior. He wasn't like that when we were younger. He use to be very kind and gentle. He was adored by everyone. But ever since our mother was killed, I'm afraid that he just hasn't been the same. And especially towards anyone who is from insomnia. He seems to blame all of you for the attack. Even if you had nothing to do with it."
"Lucky us." Paul said as he crossed his arms in frustration.
"Well thank the stars that your back my Lady." The woman said.
"Thank you Maria." Luna replied to her. "I would like you to meet Mr. Paul (l/n) and his daughter (y/n) (l/n). They were my escorts back."
"Thank you for keeping her safe." Maria replied as she bowed deeply to you and your dad. "We are truly in your debt."
"It was our pleasure Ms. Maria." Your dad replied as he bowed to her in return.
"Pardon my saying so, but aren't you a bit young to be on a security detail?" Maria asked as she looked at you.
"Don't let her age fool you." Your dad said with a smile. "This young lady has been training for years."
"Really?" Maria asked.
"And she's a really good chef and retainer as well." Luna said with a smile.
You dropped your head down as you tried to hide the heat as it was rising up in your cheeks. "Thank you for saying so."
"Well that remains to be seen." Maria said as she looked at you with searching eyes. "But I shall let Gentiana be the judge of that."
"Who's Gentiana?" You asked Luna under your breath.
"You've meet her once before." Luna returned with a smile. "Come with me and I can properly introduce you. She was the one who had gotten me to Insomnia. But she had to leave to take care of something for me which is why she wasn't with us on the trip back."
"Come on. Let's go see if she's in the garden." Luna said with a huge smile as she excitedly reached over and grabbed your hand.
"Oh. Okay." You quickly said as she started pulling you along.
"Her highness seems to be very comfortable with (y/n)." Maria said with a smile as she watched Luna excitedly drag you across the courtyard and into the manor.
"Well they have been spending the last few weeks with each other." Your dad said with a smile as he started to follow Maria as she headed for the manor. "And with how well Luna gets along with people. It's only natural for that to happen."
"Not with Luna." Maria said as she casually walked across the courtyard. "Now it is true that Luna is very good with people. But typically she keeps her full composure about her. She is truly relaxed around (y/n). I haven't seen her like this since she got to spend time with Prince Noctis when he was recovering from some very serious injuries."
Your dad dropped his head as he slightly smiled. "Then I suppose it will be a good thing that they will be studying and traveling together in a couple years."
"How's that?" Maria asked as she gave your dad a curious look.
"Oh, it's just that they were talking about (y/n) coming in about two years and studying under Lady Luna while she's doing her first two years of college." Your dad said under his breath as he slightly glanced at Maria.
"Really?" Maria said with a slight smile. "And Lady Lunafreya liked that idea?"
"She did." Your dad said with a smile.
"That would be wonderful for her to have someone she trusts during her accession." Maria said in a thoughtful tone. "She will be put to the test during then. And she will need someone who is strong and supportive."
"What is it that she has to do for her accession?" Your dad asked as he gave Maria a curious look.
"Luna has to travel to all of the temples of the previous kings and the resting places of the gods and ask for their favor. This way she can call upon them if the time presents itself that they need to once again help out mankind. Every royal highness must do this if they ever wish to become the next Oracle." Maria said as they walked through the front door and into the long high ceiling entrance.
"That sounds like Prince Noctis' accession." Paul said and slightly smiled at Maria.
"It is very similar." Maria agreed. "But it is the Oracles plea with each one that allows him to receive their gift. Without it, he will only be looking at a weapon that can never be touched and a god who won't help him."
"What if the past kings and gods reject her?" Your dad asked as he gave her a curious look. "What would happen then?"
"You should not state such things." Maria quickly said to him in a harsh tone.
"But what if?" He asked again. "What if it doesn't work?"
Maria stopped in her tracks and gave Paul a dreaded look. "Then the gods have truly given up on us and we are all doomed to die at their hands. Because without their help. We will never see the light of day again and will be totally consumed by darkness."
You couldn't help but to laugh at Luna as she quickly lead you through the gates and into the courtyard that stretched out in front of the manor. You hadn't seen her that happy since her snowy dance with Noctis. She smiled broadly at you before she herself laughed as she made you run to the front stairs. You liked how the white brick stairs beautifully accented the dark stone the made up the walls that had up the manor itself. She then slightly laughed as you both ran up the stairs and to the front door. Then she released you as the doors were opened wide by two smiling butlers.
You both then giggled as you ran through the entrance way. You followed her as she ran ahead and towards the far end of the room. Then she headed out the back door that seemed to lead back outside and into a garden.
But right as you approached the back door that lead outside. You were stopped in your tracks as her brother suddenly appeared as he stepped in front of you. You stopped short and looked up at him. Your heart jumped as he looked at you.
He stepped forward as he glared down at you. You stepped back from him as you tried to catch your breath. You weren't sure what he wanted. But based on his look, it was something serious. Which made you nervous, as he moved in closer and gave you a hard stare.
"You seem familiar to me for some reason." He said in a cold tone.
You nervously rubbed the back of your head as you looked down. "Yeah. I get that a lot. I just have one of those faces I guess."
Fuck! Where had we meet? You thought as you tried to rack your brain.
Then your heart almost stopped. Wait a minute. Didn't Luna say that he was training to be a company commander for the Nif? Oh dear six. Please tell me he wasn't in that throne room when I had made my escape?
"Is this your first time being outside of Insomnia?" He asked as he tried to look you in the eyes.
"Yep." You replied as you smiled.
"And what was it you were doing on the detail?" He asked as he searched your face.
"She was my retainer Ravus." You heard Luna say from behind you. "She helped me out while Gentiana was away."
"And where was Gentiana?" He asked in a somewhat cold tone as he looked at Luna.
"I was tending to a personal matter." You heard a soothing female voice say from behind you.
You turned around and came face-to-face with a beautiful straight black haired women. As she came walking over from the garden, her black and white dress moved effortlessly around her trim body. You slightly gasped as you remembered meeting her during the winter festival when she came up with Luna so that she could see Noctis. She gave Ravus a slight smile before turning to Luna.
Luna smiled broadly back at her. Then Luna walked over and grabbed your hand again. You were thrown off a bit as she started to move you towards the garden. But before you could move more than three feet you were stopped in your tracks once again.
"I'm not done talking with her." Ravus said as he grabbed your other hand.
You were jerked to a stop as Ravus held you firm. Then you felt him pulling you back towards him.
"I want to learn a bit more about this girl that was your, 'so called' retainer." Ravus said in a firm tone and he started to tug harder on you.
You weren't sure what to do as you stood in place as they pulled you from both sides if you were the rope in the middle of a tug of war. You wanted to let go of both of them. But you were a bit nervous to do that to her brother. She had told you that he didn't want her fighting. So if he figured out that you were more than just a simple retainer, it might cause a few issues for everyone involved.
"Would someone mind explaining what this is about?" Your dad asked as he came walking up with Maria.
"Just asking a few questions is all. "Ravus said as he whipped his hand away as he turned towards Paul.
"And why are you concerned about her?" Ravus said with a stern look.
"Because it looked like you were going to pull her apart." Paul said in a straight voice.
"Far from it." Ravus said as he started walking away. "I wouldn't waste the energy on someone as weak as her."
Your jaw dropped slightly from his words. The fuck?
Then as you felt your temper start to take over. You then quickly closed your mouth and clenched your hands into a tight fists as you felt your temper start to take over.
Weak! You thought as you could feel the tension in you start to tighten up. Your calling me weak? I'll fucking show you weak asshole!
Your dad slightly raised his eyebrow at you as a means of getting you to not react. Which wasn't easy, considering that you wanted to punch the guy dead in the face just to prove to him how wrong he is. But as Ravus walked away, your dad approached you and tried to block your line of sight. But you looked around your dad and stared hard at Ravus as he turned the corner and headed down the hallway on the right.
"If your going to study here, you're going to have to learn how to deal with him." Your dad said as he blocked your view again as he crossed his arms in front of himself.
"I know one way I can deal with him." You said under your breath.
"And I don't think you have any idea who you're trying to tangle with if you go that route." Your dad quietly said to you. "There's a reason he's training to be a commander (y/n). Your not the only one who has been training for years to accomplish a certain goal."
You dropped your head as you knew that he was probable right about Ravus. Plus he did have one major thing on you. And that was that he was at least a whole head taller than you and way stronger, based on his grip on your wrist earlier.
"Everyone must be hungry after your long trip." Maria said as she looked at the three of you. "How about we head to the dinning room for dinner. It should be ready by now. The chef has been whipping up a feast to welcome you back my lady."
"That sounds perfect." Luna said with a smile to Maria before she turned to you. "Than after dinner I can show you the garden. It's beautiful and even has a table near the entrance that you can sit at if you like. You can even call your boyfriend there is you want. This way you can have some privacy."
You dropped your head for a moment as she grabbed your hand with both of hers. It would be nice to see something relaxing while talking to Ignis again. If he wants to talk that is. You still weren't sure, since you hadn't heard your phone go off yet.
"Yeah." You quietly said as you kept your gaze down.
"Don't worry." Luna said to you with a smile. "I'm sure he'll answer this time."
You slightly smiled as you looked at her. "I hope so."
You couldn't believe your eyes as you looked out over the huge garden that was filled with bright blue flowers. You couldn't help but to close your eyes as you inhaled the sweet fragrance. You had never smelled anything so beautiful in all your life. You couldn't help but to smile as you let the scent fill your senses as it calmed you down.
After a few minutes you opened your eyes again and saw that Luna was standing beside you doing the same thing with a huge smile on her face. You couldn't help but to smile at her before you turned back to the flowers. You then closing your eyes again as you let your whole body relax and absorb as much of it as you could.
"Their scent is heavenly." You said as you slowly opened your eyes. "What are they?"
"Their called sylleblossoms." Luna answered as she picked one and held it out to you.
"Of all the flowers in the world. These are the flowers that I love the most." Luna said as she smiled at you as you carefully took the flower from her. "They always remind me of home. Which is silly since their only grow here."
"That's not silly." You replied with a smile as you twirled the flower slowly around in your fingers. "It's a good thing to have something like this to remind you of home and of those you love."
"Just like your ring?" She asked as she smiled back at you.
You smiled as you started rubbing your ring as you spun it around your finger. "Yeah."
"Okay kiddo. It's ready to go." You heard your dad say from the patio area of the garden.
You turned around and looked at the patio. You saw that your dad had his laptop set-up on the table that was just outside the door. He was standing there beaming at you as you gave him a unsure look. Suddenly you felt nervous all over again. You didn't think that you could handle him turning you away again.
"But....?" You started to ask when your dad gave you a huge smile.
"And there is someone on, who really wants to talk to you." He said as he turned the computer around so that you could see that there was someone on the screen.
"There you are." You slowly walked up to the computer and saw Korn looking back at you. "You have caused quite the stir around here young lady."
"Hi Mr. Scientia." You nervously greeted Korn as he sat there smiling at you with a relieved look. "Is something wrong?"
"I might ask you the same thing. Ignis has been going crazy trying to get a hold of you. But your phone kept going straight to voicemail." Korn explained as he sat back.
"My voicemail?" You asked as you gave him a confused look. "Why my voicemail? I don't understand."
"Neither do we." Korn said as you heard someone moving behind Korn.
"(Y/n)?" You heard Ignis' voice say in a strained tone. "Did you get a hold of her?"
Korn then looked off to the side as you slowly sat down in the chair that was right in front of the computer as if in a daze. "More like, her dad got a hold of her for us."
Then your heart leaped as Ignis' face popped up beside Korn. "(Y/n)! Oh thank the six your okay."
"Of course I'm okay." You said as you gave them both a confused look.
"Then why haven't you been answering your phone?" Ignis asked in an almost plea as he gave you a strained look.
"Because it hasn't been ringing." You said as you gave him a hurt look.
"I don't understand." Ignis said as he was now the one with the confused look. "I've been trying to get a hold of you ever since you left your message. In fact I called right after I saw your name pop up on my screen. But it only rang once before it went to your voicemail. Did something happen?"
"You tell me?" You asked back with a slightly hurt voice. "Why didn't you pick up?"
"I was fighting to get my phone back from Noctis when you called." Ignis said as he turned the computer towards himself as he sat down. "He was trying to grab my phone from me."
"Now why would he do that?" You asked as you sat back.
"Well." Ignis said as he put this head down. "He has been going crazy ever since I told him about what happened the last time we talked."
"Oh, where you hung up on me?" You asked with a hurt voice as you sat back in the chair and brought both knees up to your chest.
Ignis dropped his head for a moment. "I never should have done that. I had let my emotions cloud my judgement. I never should have hung up like I did. And for that I'm sorry."
"But why did you hang up?" You quietly asked as you wrapped your arms around your legs.
"I was upset that I couldn't do anything to help you." Ignis said before he looked back up at you. "How could I? You were on a ship in the middle of the ocean. It's not like I could just drive over and get you."
"No, I suppose you couldn't." You dropped your gaze as you tighten up your grip. "But you still could have called me back."
"I tried love." Ignis said with a stressed tone. "Once I saw that you called me. I knew that you were where I could call you again. Which is what I have been doing ever since. In fact Noctis has been trying as well, same thing with everyone else. But no one has been able to get a hold of you. Until now that is."
"But my phone hasn't gone off once." You said as you gave him a hurt look.
"Is your phone dead or something?" Ignis asked as he looked at you.
"I don't think so." You said as you loosen up your grip.
I don't think my phone is dead. You thought as you sat there. That would explain the lack of noise from it though.
That was when you realized that not only had you not hear it ring. But you also hadn't heard it make any other sound as well. Which was odd. Since it would usually go off from random updates from some of your mobile games.
You then looked over and saw your bag sitting by the chair where you had left it before walking out into the field. Could it have been off this whole time? You then got up and went over to your bag. You knelt down and opened it up as you started looking for your phone.
"(Y/n)? Is everything alright?" You heard Ignis' voice say from the computer speakers.
"I'm checking my phone." You said right as you felt the hard casing for your phone.
You grab your phone and pulled it out as well as the green silk shawl that got caught up in the case. Then you went back over and sat back down on the chair as you looked at the blank screen. You removed the shawl and started tapped on the screen. But nothing happened. Was it dead?
You then pressed the power button. Perhaps it just needed to restart. But as the start up screen came up immediately, you knew exactly what happened. You phone had been off this whole time. You then couldn't help but to gasp and put your hand over your mouth. For your phone started going crazy with notifications of missed calls, and new voicemails and texts.
You brought your knees back up to your chest as the tears started rolling down your cheeks. You looked at screen with blurry eyes as you saw that not only had Ignis and Noctis tried to get a hold of you. But also Monica, Gladiolus and even Marge.
"Well at least I know now that you didn't intently ignore me this time." You heard Ignis say in a relieved tone.
"I......my phone.......I didn't......." You looked back up at him as you tried to say as your throat was closing up as the tears poured.
"It's okay love." Ignis said in a soft tone. "You obviously didn't know."
You then felt your heart swell as you watched a single tear roll down his cheek. "I'm just glad to be able to talk to you again."
"Me too." You replied as you wrapped your arms back around your legs. "So much has happened. And it has been driving me nuts that I haven't been able to talk to you about it."
"Then let's talk." He replied with a smile as he sat back and got comfortable in his chair.
"We'll leave you two alone now." Your dad said to you as he stood beside Luna.
"Come to my room when you're done. I can't wait to hear how Noctis is doing." Luna said with a smile.
"Okay." You replied to them both. "Thank you."
"Anytime kiddo." Your dad replied.
Then your dad gave you a quick kiss on your head before he looked at Ignis. "Take all the time you need tonight. I know you two have a lot to get caught up on."
"Thank you." You replied in unison.
Your dad slightly laughed at the two of you. "Like nothing happened. I wish your mother and I could of made up that easily. Of course you two have a unique relationship. And one that most people envy."
You dropped your head as you tried to hide the heat rising in your cheeks.
"Don't lose that." He continued. "You both will need that later. But for now, we'll take our leave. Come find me if you need me. Just not too soon. I have a call to make myself."
"Okay." You replied as you looked up and smiled at your dad.
Then he turned and followed Luna as they headed back into the manor. You smiled at them before you turned back to Ignis. You smiled at him as he was reclined back as he watched you. You could feel your body finally starting to relax as you looked into his dark green eyes as smiled back.
"You looked as beautiful as always love." Ignis said in his smooth accented voice. "I've really missed you."
"Me too." You replied as you moved your hair behind your ear as you smiled back at him. "I can't wait to be home."
"You and me both." Ignis said with a slight smile. "I hope you realize that I'm not going to let you leave the area without me again."
"Can the same go for you?" You shyly smiled back.
"Six knows that I wish it could." Ignis returned with longing voice. "But perhaps we could arrange to meet up somewhere along the way."
"But I already have the perfect disguise." You said with a smile.
"How so?" Ignis asked as he gave you a curious look.
"We had picked up a little something in Cartanica." You said as you smiled at him as you put the green shawl over you head and tied it around your chin so that it covered up you head. "We got it from one of the street vendors as we walked around checking out the place."
"That color suits you." Ignis said as he gave you a sensual look as he slightly smiled at you.
"Thank you." You said as you returned the same look.
"Did you learn anything about the place while you walked around?" He asked as he looked at ever feature of your face as it was framed perfectly in the oval of the shawl.
"I did. And I took a lot of pictures as well." You said with a smile as you dropped one leg as smiled back at Ignis.
"Then tell me about it." He said with a sweet smile as he gave you his loving look back. "I would also like to hear about the ship as well. I heard that they were a research vessel and were conducting several experiments."
"The ship was great." You beamed back. "I got to cook in their galley and serve the officers for them. Plus I got to navigate by the stars and even help out during a really storm that made over half the ship's crew sick."
"Really?" Ignis said with a surprised look.
"Yeah." You said with a smile. "But I'll tell you about Cartanica first."
"Sounds good." Ignis said as he sat up so that he hear better.
