Chapter 70 - Internal Struggles
The first class ended with no issues. Even though Misty and Keith seemed to be very insistent to try and work with the exact opposite person then who was in front of them. But they seemed to give up after a while when they realized that there was no way that it was going to happen. Especially since both groups were on opposite sides of the mat. Which exactly what you dad wanted, which greatly relieved you.
You did also enjoy watching Keith struggle to get out of your dad's grip towards the end. And that was even without your dad being overly aggressive with his grip. He kept squirming and yanking his hand away , but he just couldn't seem to the right angle. Until he finally yanked towards himself and almost fell down.
Misty, on the other hand, was quite the opposite. She was being very prissy the whole time. And she really didn't seem to like it when you grabbed her wrist. She kept acting like you were hurting her, even though you knew that you weren't. Towards the end though, you were wanting to.
The only one who didn't seem to mind who he was working with was Chris. He was focused on the actual tasks for most of class. He had been watching and listening to your dad. Then he would do exactly what he was suppose to. That was until he happen to notice you getting ready to leave. That was when he watched you put your stuff away and head out.
As you walked down the passageway, you slightly smiled to yourself. You actually felt more relaxed now. And a lot more focused. Perhaps your dad had been right when he had told you earlier that a bit of physical activity was a great way to clear the mind and calm down the nerves.
After dinner, the three of you found yourselves back in the lab again. But this time, you were able to concentrate on only each other as you both ran through the drills. First he held for you, then you held for him. You could tell that he wasn't going for power as much as he was for accuracy and focus. You followed his rhythm and did the same as you really paid attention to where you hands and feet were striking and how you were moving with each one.
Once you were done, your dad started to put away the gear for the night. While you went over a few more moves with Luna. You took your time in showing her and having her repeat it back to you so that she could see exactly what it should look and feel like for each one. As the two it you worked, your dad was walking around, cleaning up the room while he watched the two of your carefully.
"You two are quite the pair. I can see why my crew is excited to be in your class. And to be honestly, I'm very impressed with both of you myself." Paul heard Bob say as he stood by the door as he watched him putting away the last of the equipment.
"Thanks." Paul said back with a smile. "It's good to know that I can still impress an old rival."
"We were never rivals. Just friends who pushed the other to their limits. And even and beyond in some cases." Bob said as smiled back at him.
Paul slightly laughed at him as he grabbed his water bottle. "That's the same thing."
"Not to me." Bob said with a smile. "But either way. I wanted to thank you again for doing this for my crew. Their all buzzing about it now. I haven't seen them this excited since we saved the hatcheries."
Paul grinned as he slightly laughed at Bob. "I guess they don't have a lot to be excited about then."
"No I suppose not." Bob said with a smile. "But after what we have gone through in the past. I don't mind it being so boring."
"I hear ya." Paul returned with a smile. "I just wish it would stay boring."
"Aye. That would be great." Bob returned as you and Luna walked over after finishing up.
"You two work well with each other." Your dad said to you and Luna as you both stopped in front of him.
"Thanks." You returned with a smile. "It helps that Luna is a quick study."
Luna smiled back at you. "It also helps when you have great teachers as well."
"Awe. Thank you." You returned with a smile.
"We'll stop here for now though." Your dad said as he placed his hand on his hip. "We can pick it back up tomorrow night."
"You know, this seems to be very one sided though." Bob said as he looked at your dad.
"How do you figure?" Your dad asked as he looked back at him.
"None of them seem to be even close to your strength." He said bluntly.
"No their not." Your dad answered as he glanced down and crossed his arms in front of himself. "But that's alright. Everyone needs to start off somewhere."
"But didn't you want to burn off some aggression? If their nowhere near your strength or skill, your not going to get anything out of it." Bob said as he gave Paul a serious look.
"It's fine. I don't really want to hurt any of your crew members." Your dad said as he avoided Bob's gaze.
"How about if I work with you then?" Bob asked.
"Now why would you want to do that?" Paul asked as he gave Bob a curious look.
"Well, no one else aboard this ship knows how to fight like we do. And I could use a good sparring partner myself. It's been a long time since someone has actually challenged me." Bob said back with a slight smirk.
Then he relaxed as he talked with his hands. "And this time of day works for me. In fact I would prefer it. I'm not a big fan of having an audience. If that's okay with you. And besides, you look like you need someone who can take your hits. You have been tensing up more each day since we left."
"Are you sure that your up for it?" Your dad asked him as he crossed his arms in front of himself.
"With you? Always." Bob said with a friendly smirk.
"Well alright then." Paul said to Bob as he held out his hand. "We'll start it tomorrow then."
"Sounds good." Bob said as he clasped Paul's hand in a firm handshake.
The rest of the week went pretty much the same way. Breakfast, then the labs, lunch, help teach class, dinner, have practice, and finally a shower before heading to bed. The only thing that changed was that the class was one whole group now, as they started to work together in pairs as they went through the strikes and blocks. This gave them all a chance to spar at the same time as they worked with each other.
This seemed to work very well for them. Well, for most of them anyway. You had seen the tension flair up a couple of times between Keith and Chris when your dad tried to get them to work together. Which after the second time when they almost went to full blows, they were never paired up again. But neither of you were paired up with directly with them. Or even with Misty for that matter.
In fact you didn't directly work with any of them. Instead your dad would demonstrate with you. Then you would both walked around and watch the others and would correct their form when it was off. Sometimes you were demonstrate with one of them so that they would both see it and get the idea. But it was only for one or two strikes with each.
By doing it that way, both of you got a chance to observe everyone as they went through the moves. And you didn't get stuck with someone who would cause problems for either of you. Which worked great in the beginning. You were able to keep them from hurting each other or themselves with the wrong strike or block all while working on their form. Then after awhile, they all started to catch on and were able to repeat a lot of the same moves with almost exact precision.
You and your dad were very impressed with how quickly they were picking it up. It actually made the classes easier. And your dad was even able to keep adding in more moves and didn't feel like they were being overwhelmed. This pleased both of you and even showed both of you that the crew was much better and stronger due to it. And at one point you were starting to really get into it. That was until your dad mentioned to you before class started, that he wanted to go over the two neck grab escape.
When you dad first brought it up to you, you were fine with it. But as the time for class approached and as everyone started to come in. Your body was starting to tension up again from the thoughts that started racing through your head. And they only seemed to increase as your dad stood in front of you to perform the grip.
But as you felt yourself already starting to get stressed about it. You thought back to the last time that you had done this move. It had been with Ignis in the training room at the citadel with Korn watching. The only problem was that, was that Ignis had been able to break you through it in a unique way. You really didn't have that option now.
As your dad stood in front of you. He seemed to see you starting to struggle a bit with it. Because as he stood there watching you, he could see you tensing up. You were already gripping your hands into fists as you stood there rigidly in front of him. And this was even before he had even done anything. He could even see that you were starting to breath heavily as you took your stance.
"Are you sure you're okay with this?" He asked as he studied you. "I can use someone else if you want."
"No." You said as you nodded your head as you tried to calm back down by clearing your head. "I'm fine. It's just nerves."
"Alright." He quietly replied to you before he loudly looked away and addressed the group.
"These next two moves are escapes that you use if you were grabbed from behind as your opponent tries to put you in a cross chest or a head lock." He explained as he turned his back to you as he placed your arm across his chest and placed your hand in his arm pit.
Then he proceeded to talk about the moves as the two of you did them. "The trick with this one is not to panic. But instead, to turn your head as you tuck your chin in and away from their elbow. Then your going to hook both of your thumbs under their arm and push up. As you are pushing up, your going to move your inside foot around and behind theirs as you slip out and move behind them.
"Then as you move behind them, your going to grab their wrist with your matching arm and pulled it back with you as you twist it behind them. Then once your behind them, your going to slam their arm into their back as you shove them off of you. As they move away, get back into your stance and put your guard up in case they try to turn back around and grab you again." He finished as he stood back in his stance with his arms up in front of him as you took a couple of steps forward.
"The same moves would go if it was head lock maneuver." Your dad said as he had you grabbed his neck.
Then again as he slowly ran through it, as he described it. "Tuck, hook, lift, step, grab, move, shove, guard. Does everyone have it? Or do you need to see it again?"
"I missed that." You heard Keith say. "Can you go over that again?"
You looked away from the class as you rolled your eyes. Of course he wasn't paying attention again. He never did seem to be when your dad was going over a new maneuver. Because every time he would have your dad go over it at least once.
"Which one?" Your dad asked as he gave him a slightly stern look.
You could tell by your dad's tone that he was starting to lose his patience with him as well. Now your dad had to problems going over something if someone had questions about it. But it seemed like Keith was asking just to be a dick about sometimes. Especially when he would ask to see it over and over again.
Of course when your dad would ask him if he got or not after repeating it, he would always blow it off like he had gotten it the first time. Which was true in some case. But for the most part, he would royal mess it up on the first few tries. Or he would completely forget what he was suppose to be doing all together.
"Can you go over both at a normal speed?" He asked in his usual slick tone. "I hadn't quite catch what the holders suppose to be doing during all of that."
You froze for a minute before you turned and looked back at your dad. You had had a feeling that you weren't going to be able to just get away with only being the aggressor for this one. You could feel the tension shot up as you looked at your dad. But you fought to keep calm as you gave your dad a determined look as he questioning looked at you.
"You ready?" Your dad asked as searched your face.
You simply nodded as you tried to stay calm and focused. Then you tried to think of Ignis, his voice, his touch, his smell. All of these you needed if you were going to be able to do this. If not, you weren't sure if you could keep your wits about you.
"I want everyone to watch carefully. We're only doing this once." He said as he scanned everyone. "Understood?"
"Yes sir." They all responded.
Well everyone, except Keith, who slightly smiled as he watched. He seemed to be enjoying this way to much. You couldn't help but to glance at him as he stared you right in the eyes. You weren't sure what he was thinking. But he face wasn't a very friendly one.
You hadn't been paying attention to your dad when he started, since you had still been looking at Keith as you tried to read his expression. And unfortunately, the distraction caused you to be caught off guard as your dad grabbed your wrist and whipped you around as he put you into the cross chest grab. Which, in almost a panic, you quickly broke out of as you did the escape. You stood there for a moment as you tried to focus again as your heart was now pounding in your chest from the motion.
But then as your dad turned around and grabbed your wrist again. You were caught off guard as he quickly whipped you around as he twisted your arm around to your back and wrapped his other arm around your neck. Only this time, instead of your training kicking in, your whole body started to freak out. You heart rate shot through the roof, your vision started to go, and your whole body started to shake. You could once again smell that spicy cologne and could hear his voice in your ear as your vision blacked out.
"What the matter sweetheart? Can't you get out?" You heard the old seductive voice say again.
You gasped as you felt your blood run cold from hearing those words. How the hell? Was he really here? But how?
You tightly closed your eyes as felt your whole body starting to disintegrate out from under you. You tried to picture Ignis, but you couldn't. You couldn't even remember what he sounded like now. No smell, no voice, and no touch came to your rescue this time as you couldn't even picture Ignis face. The only thing that came to your mind was pure terror as you could hear, smell and even feel your old counselor once again touching you. And it was that terror that completely took over as you completely collapsed into a sea of darkness.
"Are you sure that she didn't hit her head on anything before she collapsed?" You heard the ship's doctor ask.
"This isn't a hit to the head doc. Or at least not one that can be seen." You heard your dad answer. "No this is much deeper. And most of it now is all in her head."
Then you heard your dad sigh. "And it's for something that I thought that we had gotten her past. If I had known that there was even the slightest chance that she would go down like that again. I never would have done that."
"I see. Well unfortunately, mental trauma can return at any time. Sometime even several years later. And in some cases, it can even come back with a greater impact. So there is nothing saying that it won't happen again either. That's why it's almost impossible to treat mental health patients. And especially when you never know what is going to set them off. Some triggers can be obvious. Where others aren't even directly related to trauma." You heard Doc explain as you slowly opened your eyes as you laid still.
You mean this can happen again? You thought as you felt your heart rate increase again.
"You mean this can happen again?" You heard your dad echo your question out loud to the doc. "Then how are we suppose to help her then?"
"Most patients who have suffered a traumatic event in their life, see a psychologist or a psychiatrist so that they have a person that they can talk to about the event. They certainly can't solve the problem. But they can give the person someone to talk to about it who is unbiased to the event and aren't people who are involved." Doc said. "The last person she worked with seemed to have been able to help her. Perhaps you can have her see them again."
"Perhaps. But the person who had helped her wasn't a doctor." Your dad replied.
"A hypnotist then?" Doc asked.
"No." You replied from the bed
"It was my boyfriend." You replied as you closed your eyes as you curled up into tight ball as you tried to control your body as it started to shake again.
You couldn't help the tears now that were threatening to fall as you felt your heart cracking. You would have given anything to have Ignis there holding you. Sure it had only been just over two weeks since you last talked to him. But at the moment, it felt like a lifetime ago. You curled up tighter as you thought about him. You hadn't missed him as much as you did at that moment.
"What's his name?" You heard doc ask as you felt a hand on your back. "I might want to meet this young man someday."
You opened back up your eyes and watched your dad sit down beside you as he continued to rub your back. Doc was standing as he looked back down at you with his kind eyes. You could see that he was honestly concerned about you. You gave him a slight smile.
"His name is Ignis. Ignis Scientia." You replied.
"Scientia?" Doc returned with a surprised look.
"Yeah." Your dad replied as he looked at doc as well. "Do you know the name?"
"I do. But the name was Korn, not Ignis." He replied.
"Really? That's his uncle. But how would you know his uncle?" You asked as you sat up and gave him a curious look.
"We had to contact him at one point for someone completely different once." Doc returned as shifted his feet.
"Oh yeah?" Your dad asked as he also gave Doc a curious and searching look. "And who was that for?"
"Its of no consequence now." Doc said as he adjusted his glasses. "And besides, that was a long time ago."
"Yeah, okay." Your dad said as he gave him a suspicious look. "But any way. I have a call to make."
"Are you up for a walk?" Your dad asked as he looked at you. "I think that there's someone you really need to see right now."
You looked up and gave him a curious look. "Who?"
"You'll just have to wait and find out." Your dad said with a smile.
"But what about dinner?" You asked as you looked back and forth between your dad and the doctor.
"Chef Henry said that he would gladly cover for you tonight." Doc replied as he gave you a slight smile. "He told me that you looked like you needed a night off anyway."
"Oh." You said as you dropped your eyes. "Okay."
"Let's head out. You can rest in your stateroom afterwards." Your dad said as he helped you stand up.
"But what about Luna and practice?" You asked as you stood up.
"Don't worry about them tonight." Your dad replied as he looked at you. "After this I just want you to relax. Okay?"
You nodded your head as you dropped your gaze back down. Truth be told, you really didn't want to do anything for the rest of the night anyway. But at the same time, you did need to clear your head again. You didn't want to go backwards. Not now. Not when Ignis was nowhere near you to be able to help you out. So for now, you had to figure it out on your own.
"So, when your ready, I want you to hit the enter button." Your dad was telling you as you sat in the chair that was facing his laptop in his stateroom. "I'll have Henry send up some food for you. But in the meantime, take as much time in here as you need. And we'll see you after practice. Okay?"
"Okay. But who is it that I'm suppose to see?" You asked a you gave him a curious look.
"Why don't you hit the enter button and find out." Your dad said with a smile.
You gave your dad a curious look. Then you hit the enter button. Then your heart skipped a beat as there was a pair of dark green eyes that were perfectly outlined with silver rimmed glasses looking back at you. Your breath caught as you looked at the image of Ignis on the screen. But then you saw the image move as he slightly smiled at you after he took a deep breath himself.
"Ignis?" You half whispered.
"Hi love." He said with a smile. "I wasn't expecting to hear from you just yet. So this is a pleasant surprise."
"Yes it is." You half whispered back as you fought off the tears as they started to roll down your cheeks.
"I'll leave you two be." Your dad said from the door as he was getting ready to leave the room. "Talk all you want. The line is secure and you shouldn't have any interruptions for a while."
You quickly turned and faced your dad. "Thank you."
"Your welcome kiddo." Your dad returned with a simple smile.
"Ignis." Your dad called out to Ignis.
"Sir?" Ignis returned as he looked at Paul.
"Tell your uncle I owe him one." Paul answered.
"I will." Ignis returned as he slightly nodded.
"Consider it a pay back for you setting up the investigation in Altissia." You both heard Korn say as he popped up behind Ignis for a moment.
"Will do." Paul returned. "But we can talk about that later. Let's let these two talk."
"I couldn't agree more. Later then." Korn returned as he walked away from Ignis.
"Just close my laptop and stateroom when your done." Your dad said to you as he opened up the door.
"Okay. You replied as you gave your dad a half smile.
He then nodded and walked out of the room and closed the door completely behind himself. You smiled then turned back to look at Ignis as he smiled back at you. You could already see the concerned look on his face. You figured that your dad must have said something about what happened in order to get Korn to agree to let you and Ignis talk like this. And as you watched him study you, you were positive that that was the case.
"Your sure are a sight for sore eyes." He said as he half whispered.
"That's suppose to be my line." You slightly laughed as you chocked back the tears.
"Now that would depend on who you are talking about." He returned as he gave you his loving look. "Dear gods have I missed you."
"Here too." You replied as the tears started to pour. "It seems like forever since we talked."
"Indeed. And it seems that you have run across a few issues since you've been away." He replied as he leaned in closer to the screen.
You dropped your gaze for a moment as you thought about everything that had happened since you had left. "You might say that."
"Do you want to talk about it?" He asked.
You looked back up at him. You wanted to tell him everything that had gone on. But you were a bit afraid that he might get jealous if he knew that there was a guy on board that you kept falling on to. You didn't see him as the jealous type.
But then again, he had been very upset with you and Noctis for just a kiss. And being this far away, it's not like you could just go over and see him. So after looking at him as he watched you. You decided to just leave out the parts were you fell on Chris. But you would tell him everything else.
"I would like that a lot." You said with a smile. "But only after you tell me what has been going on there since I left."
Suddenly you noticed that Ignis got uncomfortable. Which if you didn't know him as well as you did, you might have missed it. Since it was only in his eyes that gave him away as they slightly blinked as he took a deep breath. It looked like you weren't the only one having a few issues.
"Are you sure you want to know?" He asked as he dropped his gaze.
"Well when you put it like that, now I really want to know." You returned as you moved up closer to the screen.
Ignis looked back at you and saw you gave him an encouraging smile. He gave you a slight smile back. Then he leaned back up towards the screen and shifted in his chair as he got more comfortable.
"Alright then." He said in his usual smooth tone. "But we may be here a while."
Over the next several hours the two of you talked about what had been going on since you had each seen the other. You shared with him everything that had happened in Altissia, minus the vision at the alter. He shared with you that Noctis had decided to head out on a camping trip for a couple days. Ignis, Gladio, and even Prompto had all gone with him. It gave them all a chance to work closer with each other as a team. And it also gave Ignis a chance to found out that it was way more difficult to cook outside then he thought that it was going to be.
Mainly because it was more difficult to find enough food to feed them all each night. Let alone it was more difficult to clean up after everything was finished for the night. Even though they had decided to stay at one of the havens that was right near a fishing spot. Which apparently Noctis wanted to try his hand at fishing again. And after he lost a few lures and snapped a few lines, he was finally able to catch enough fish for Ignis to cook up for the four guys.
You watched how Ignis talked about it. You could almost tell that for part of the trip, he had actually had some fun. Even though he wouldn't say whether he did or not. It didn't seem to be the 'camping' part of the trip. Or even the outdoors part that bothered him. In fact he looked like he had enjoyed that part quite a bit.
What seemed to be bother him was the cleaning aspect of it. Because apparently one night it had rained really hard and it left everything wet and soggy. Which didn't really affect the camping gear. But it had turned the dirt around the haven into nothing but a very muddy mess. This really upset Ignis since they got trashed out as they hunted some of the local game.
You tried not to laugh as he described how everyone kept slipped in the mud as they tried to take down a garula. They got it in the end. But Ignis said that the mud was caked on everything. All four of them had to take a dip in the pond just to get the majority of it off. That part really had him uncomfortable.
"How many showers did you take when you got back?" You asked as you tried to cheer him up.
"Two. One before I soaked in a bath. And one after." He replied as he sat back and crossed his arms.
"I bet the bath felt good to." You said with a smile. "These showers here have nothing on a good soak in a hot tub."
Ignis smiled back. "Sounds like someone else could use a soak."
"You have no idea." You replied back as you brought both of your knees up to your chest and placed your feet on the seat as you wrapped your arms around them. "Between the cooking in the kitchen and the workouts in the gym, I'm nothing but sore muscles."
"Perhaps we could meet up at my place when I get back and break in the new hot tub." You said with a smile as you tilted your head to the side.
Then you watched with amusement as he slightly narrowed his eyes as he looked at you. "Perhaps."
Then after a moment he sat back up and leaned towards the screen. "Now tell me what's been going on. I told you everything from here. Now I want to know what's been going on there. And don't say that its nothing because I know better. My uncle won't have agreed to this if it was nothing. Not that I haven't enjoyed seeing you. But its usually bad when he goes against his own rules like this."
You dropped you head and rested your chin on your knees as you quietly answered. "It happened again."
"What did?" He asked as he crossed his fingers in front of himself.
"I froze again. My dad and I were demonstrating the neck grab escapes for the class." You started to explain as you looked down. "It was fine at first when he was the one being grabbed. But then when Keith said that he wanted to see it again."
"Who's Keith?" Ignis asked in a firm tone as he interrupted you.
"Oh just some guy on board who likes to stir up trouble for Chris." You replied without thinking.
"Who's Chris?" Ignis asked in a firmer tone.
"Oh, he's one of the quartermasters onboard." You answered as you looked at Ignis.
"Really." Ignis said in a very flat tone.
But as you looked at him, you saw something in his eyes that you didn't like. He was given you a hard look. Suddenly you became nervous. Was that jealousy in his eyes? Did he honestly think that there was something going on?
"Their both in the class that we're teaching." You continued as you tried to relax. "Their usually fine as long as their not paired up."
"You seem to know a lot about them." Ignis said still in his flat tone.
"It's hard not to, when your teaching them." You said as you tried to brush it off.
"Indeed." He said in a low tone.
"Your jealous." You quietly said as you looked at him. "Aren't you?"
"What gives you that idea?" He said in an almost cold tone.
"Really?" You said as you almost laughed at him. "Your the one who is being cold. And then you ask that?"
"Then what would you have me say? That it's fine. That there no issues with these guys acting like that? Because it seems to me that they might be doing it to get someone's attention." Ignis said in a harsh voice.
"But it's nothing like that." You said as you tried to calm him back down.
"If it's nothing, then why did you get nervous when I asked you about them?" He returned with more force.
"Because I was afraid that you were going to act exactly like this!" You said sternly back.
Then as you looked at him with a stern look. He did something that you never expected. With a stern look back. He reached up and closed the lid on his laptop. Which ended the call.
