Chapter 48 - Apologies
"Dad!" You cried as you ran out of the kitchen and straight towards your dad as he stood in the living room as he removed his blazer.
"There's my girl." He said right as you threw your arms around him and hugged him tight.
He wrapped his arms around you and gave you a kiss on the head. "Hey kiddo."
"Your never allowed to leave my sight again." You said as you squeezed him before you leaned back enough to look at him.
"You understand me?" You said in a demanding voice as you stared hard at him.
Paul slightly chuckled at you. "So now my daughter is giving me orders. I didn't think that would start just yet."
"I'm serious dad." You said with more force. "You really scared me last night. And not just once. But twice."
"I know." Your dad quietly said as he ran his fingers across your face as he moved your hair behind your ear. "I know."
"I can't lose you." You said as a tear streamed down your face as you were starting to lose your composure. "Your all I have left."
"I'm not going anywhere for a long time." He said as he pulled you in close. "At least, not if I have anything to say about it."
You closed your eyes as you felt comfort in his embrace. Then you looked over at Tracy and saw her give you both a loving look as she watched the two of you. Then she dropped her gaze and started looking at the floor. You noticed that she looked tired and beat up. What with the bags under her eyes and the bandages on her neck and forehead. You could almost say that she looked like a bus had hit her.
Now you knew that she should probably be in bed resting. But you had to know. You just had to know why. And it might as well be now that they start explaining.
"So what am I suppose to call you now?" You asked Tracy in a stern voice.
Your dad loosen his grip on you as he felt you start to tense up. He knew that this was coming. But he had hoped for a few minutes of peace before they had to get into this with you.
Tracy slightly smiled before she dropped her gaze again. She wasn't sure where you were going with this. But she had already known that there would be a lot of explaining to do no matter which way it went. So with a sigh, she figured that she might as well just lay out everything to you.
"My real name is Tracy Sullivan." She said as she looked you in the eyes. "I'm an undercover agent for the Intelligence Department. And I have been working for Korn for many years now. I have also worked with both of your parents on various missions after attending the academy with them."
Then Tracy dropped her gaze. "At least I did. Until the Niflheim mission. During which my team and myself were taken hostage. They had held us for almost three months. Until my team helped me escape with my life. But it was at the cost of their own. Since then I have been under protective custody by the agency and have had to use my assumed name of Sara Long to protect my identity."
She slowly looked up at you with a slight smile. "But you can still call me Sara. If your more comfortable with that."
"I would be more comfortable if I had known the truth from the beginning." You said as you released your dad and took a step back from him.
"But that wasn't possible." Your dad said to you as he watched you back up and cross your arms in front of yourself. "She was, and still is, under protective custody."
"But you knew." You pointed out. "Why didn't you say something?"
"I didn't know." Your dad corrected as he watched you. "I had figured it out on my own right after the holiday party."
"Then why didn't you say anything then?" You asked as you could feel your heart rate start to increase. "All you had to do was talk to me."
"It's not that simple." Your dad tried to argue back.
"No? But it was simple enough to let her stay in our home." You said as you were starting to loose your temper.
"That's different." He argued back.
"How's that different?" You almost shouted.
"It's my house!" He shouted.
"I live there too!" You shouted back.
"Or have you forgotten that part!" You said as tears started. "Not that you even thought about asking me how I felt about it or anything. Sure mom has been gone for a few years now. But I'm not about to let someone else come in and replace her."
"Trust me (Y/n), I never..." Tracy started to say.
"I don't want to hear anything else from you." You said in a strained voice to Tracy. "You have done nothing but lie to me from the moment we meet. How and I suppose to trust you when all you have done is lie?!"
"Now you've gone to far." Paul said sternly back.
"No." You quietly said to him as tears started flowing. "You did. By hiding things from me again."
Paul stopped in mid-breath as he started to realize what Korn was talking about. He had indeed kept you in the dark too long. He then stood there in shock as he watched you turn and run from him as you headed up the stairs to Ignis' room.
"(Y/n)." He called after you.
"Let me explain." You heard him say as you ran up the stairs.
"(Y/N)!" He shouted right as you slammed the outer door shut.
Paul then closed his eyes as the sound of the door slamming seemed to echo through the house. He knew you were right. He had kept it a secret from you. Even after you made him promise not to keep any more secrets. But he had had no choice in this case. Otherwise you would be at risk yourself. Not that you weren't already.
"I'll check on her after I serve breakfast." Ignis quietly said as he turned to walk away.
"I'm sorry for bringing our problems here." Paul said to Ignis as he was turned towards the kitchen. "You shouldn't have had to see that."
"It's fine." Ignis quietly said over his shoulder. "It not like that was the only time that voices have been raised in this house. But you should really figure out how to make up with her before your trip. Otherwise it's going to be a long quiet ride."
Paul looked at Ignis with surprise. And while he stood still and watched. Ignis walked back into the kitchen to finish breakfast. Since when did the kids become the adults? Paul couldn't help but wonder. Then he heard Ignis start to cook again as he heard the click of the stove starting up again.
"I'm so sorry Paul." Tracy said as she dropped her gaze. "I didn't wanted this to happen. And I never wanted to make her upset with you."
Paul walked over to Tracy and put his hands on her arms. "You have no reason to apologize. (Y/n) and I have had our fair share of arguments over the last few years. But I've learned that if I just give her a bit to cool off. Then I'll be able to talk to her. Trust me. This isn't anything different then what we have faced over the last few years."
"This can't be easy for her." Tracy said as she dropped her head.
"No. I'm afraid that this is far from easy for her. At least not emotionally. Not with losing her mom at such a young age. That was one of the reasons why we went to Altissia. I just couldn't help her in certain areas. But I knew that her god mother could." Paul said as he slid one hand around her waist.
"And she has every right to be upset with me." He said absently as he ran his fingers through her hair as he moved it behind her ear. "We had made a promise to not keep anymore secrets from each other."
"And I broke that promise." Paul said as he dropped his hand and his gaze as he fought with his own emotions.
"But you had to." Tracy said as she put her hand on his cheek.
"Not with her. She's much smarter then what most people think she should be." Paul said before he slowly met her eyes again. "And my daughter has seen more action in the last five years then anyone on the security force. With the exception of the glaives and us of course. Plus she knows more about being vigilant then most adults. I should have trusted her enough to tell her the truth from the beginning."
"Trust isn't something that is easily given." Paul heard from behind Tracy. "But it is something that can easily be broken."
They both turned theIr heads and saw Korn standing there with a half smile. "You and your daughter though have a very unique bond with each other. And I am certain that you will make amends with her. But perhaps a good breakfast will help you think of of the best way to do that."
"Perhaps your right." Paul said as he slid his hand down to Tracy's hand. "And maybe a cup of coffee will be enough to wake me back up again."
"Well let's just hope it will be keep you up long enough for you to talk to her." Korn said with as smile. "Then you can rest up on the office sofa bed if you like."
"Sounds good." Paul agreed as he rolled his head as he fought to stay awake.
It seemed that the nap in the waiting room just wasn't enough. Sure he had gotten them here. But he know that that wouldn't last long. For Paul could already feel pure exhaustion started to sneak back up on him again.
You weren't sure how long you had been laying in Ignis' bed as you were curled up under the covers as you snuggled up with his pillows. You hadn't slept or anything since crawling into his bed. You were way to upset for that. No instead you were in his bed so that you would be engulfed with his scent. You knew that it would help you calm back down.
Of course this didn't stop your head from spinning from what Tracy had said about the Niflheim mission. You thought that you had learned everything about that mission. The reports and documentation that you had seen on it, showed that the only people to escape were your mom and dad, and baby Prompto. Everyone else had either been killed or had gone missing.
But perhaps instead of missing, they had really meant that they were captured. Or weren't they sure when the reports were written? She had said that they were held for almost three months. Hell, that's about how long your parents had been in their clutches as well. Until you got them out of course.
You closed your eyes as you recalled the cold dark cells that they had put you and your parents in. They were nothing more than two metal bunk beds and a bucket to pee in. No windows, or blankets, or even running water. It had been like being a caged animal.
You shuddered to think what it must have been like to be there for almost three months. One day had been enough for you. And you weren't even sure if it had even been that. You had been unconscious when you had first arrived there after all.
Suddenly you were broken out of your thoughts when the door opened up. You tightened up your grip on the pillows and slid further under the sheets. You really didn't want to talk to your dad right now. And you definitely didn't want to see Tracy.
You closed your eyes and tried to pretend to be asleep as they came in. You heard them walk-in followed by the door being closed and locked. You shifted slightly as they walked over and sat on the bed. Then you felt them slide the sheet down so that they could see your face.
You were a bit confused, as you felt their fingers slid gently across your face as they moved your hair behind your ear. But then you felt a gentle kiss on your cheek. Then another as they moved further down towards your neck. Then another towards the back of your ear. You smiled then as you knew who it was, as they kissed right behind your ear.
Then you slightly moaned as they kissed it again with more force. Then you felt their hand reach under your chin and turn your head as they brought your lips up to meet theirs. You deeply exhaled as you welcomed the kiss. Then they pulled away. You slowly opened your eyes and were greeted with your favorite emerald eyes as they looked back down at you.
"I figured that would get you to look at me." Ignis said as he ran his fingers through your hair after he laid down beside you on the bed.
"Well, you figured right." You answered back and gave him a quick peck before you wrapped your arm across his chest.
He laid back on his back and draped his arm around you as you snuggled up to him. For like you, he wasn't tired. But he did enjoy just laying with you. And right now that seemed to be just what you needed. Nothing more, but nothing less.
"Are you feeling a bit better?" He quietly asked after a few moments.
"I am. Now that your here." You quietly said as you ran your fingers across his chest.
"I'm glad." He quietly responded then gave you a kiss on the head. "I don't like seeing you upset like that."
"I'm sorry you saw that." You quietly said as you dropped your head. "I don't like getting like that. But sometimes he just makes me so mad."
"It's okay to get upset." Ignis said as he gently rubbed your back. "But you should still talk to him about it. He had a good reason for not telling you. It may not be one you like. But it is the truth. Those deep into protective custody like that aren't suppose to tell anyone who they really are, unless they are on their actual detail. Which neither of you are on. And besides, I thought that you liked her?"
"I 'did' like Sara." You quietly responded. "I just don't know who Tracy is. So I can't really say if I like her now or not."
"They only changed her name you know." Ignis said as he started dragging his fingertips across your back which caused a string of tingles to go flying across your skin where he touched you. "They never changed her personality or the person that she really is."
"But who is that?" You asked as you started to drag your fingertips over his chest. "I mean, I don't really know that much about her."
"Then perhaps," he started as he looked at you, "you should get to know her. I think that you might find that not only does she really care about your dad. But she really cares about you as well."
"And how do you know that for sure?" You asked as you looked up at him.
"Because," Ignis said as he rolled on his side, "she told us."
You gave him a surprised look. "She did?"
"Indeed." He quietly responded.
"She has apparently been watching you growing up for most of your life. So it was hard for her to not worry and care about you and your brother." He said as he ran his hand across your check.
"She was watching us? Like a stocker?" You asked as you were starting to get a little weirded out.
Ignis laughed at you as you gave him a startled look.
"No. More like a hidden bodyguard." He said as he leaned over and gave you a slow passionate kiss.
You placed a hand as his cheek as you kissed. You loved to kiss him. But this one seemed to be a bit more passionate than usual. And not in the heated sense. But more like a last kiss sense.
You laughed at yourself as you figured that you were just being silly again. For that didn't make any sense. He wasn't going anywhere. He still had his training, school, and Noctis that would keep him here. Let alone his uncle and you. So why would it be a last kiss?
So with a slight smile, you deepened the kiss by moving closer to him as you moved the bedding out of the way. Right as you moved the sheets out from in between you two, he reached around your waist and pulled you closer to him. You reached your hand around his neck and ran your fingers through his hair on the back of his head. He deeply exhaled as he slightly shuttered while he pulled you flush against him. Then just as his hand was starting to explore you as it started to run down to your butt, there was a knock on the door.
"Yes?" Ignis asked as he quickly pulled away and turned his head towards the door.
"Could you let me in Ignis?" You heard your dad say from the door. "I need to talk to my daughter."
"Yes sir." Ignis responded as he released you.
Then much to your dismay, he got off of the bed as he headed for the door. You signed then pulled the bedding back over yourself and the pillow back in front of you as you tried to bury yourself in the bed again. Ignis paused at the door as he watched you hide again. He thought for a moment of leaving the door locked and rejoining you back in bed again.
But then he pushed the thought out of his head. He didn't think your dad would appreciate it. Let alone his uncle would definitely not approve and might even try to see if he could send him out to Cartanica earlier. Both of which he didn't like or what to happen. He only had a few months left with you and he wanted to enjoy each one of them with you. And spent as much time with you as he could.
Ignis took a long deep breath and heavily exhaled as he collected himself again. Then he dropped his head as he opened up the door. Paul stood there for a moment as he looked at Ignis. He could tell that something was bothering him as he stood there quietly holding open the door. But he wasn't there to talk to him at the moment. But perhaps later on he would find out.
"Could we have a few moments Ignis?" Paul asked as he watched Ignis.
"Of course sir." Ignis said without looking up. "I'll just wait downstairs."
"Thank you." Paul said as he watched Ignis walk out of his room then stop in the hallway.
"Please don't upset her again." Ignis said over his shoulder. "I just got her to calm down."
"I appreciate that." Paul said as he gave Ignis a curious look. "But I have no intention of upsetting her."
"Thank you." Ignis said.
Then without another word, Ignis looked away from Paul as he continued down the hallway as he headed for the living room. Paul watched him until he stepped out onto the walkway. Paul then slightly smiled as he walked into the room. He was glad to see that you had found someone who cared for you, as much as he did. Perhaps even more to a certain degree.
"You sure have a strong bodyguard there." Your dad said as he walked over to the bed.
"He's not my bodyguard." You quietly said as he sat on the edge of the bed.
"Well you could have fooled me." He said as he slightly pulled the comforter down so that he could see your face. "As protective as he is of you. I would consider him one."
"Again, he's not my bodyguard." You said as you looked at your dad as he smiled at you. "He's my boyfriend."
"I know." Paul said as he leaned over on one side as he watched you. "And it shows that he really cares for you."
You slightly blushed as you dropped your head. You knew that he did. For you felt the same way for him.
"And I know that you care a lot for him as well." Paul said as he smiled at you. "Which is the same way I feel about Tracy."
Your smile disappeared as you looked further down. "I know. And she seems to really care a lot for you as well. I just.............I just don't want.............I don't want anyone to replace mom." You said as you fought with the right words.
"No one will ever replace your mom." You heard your dad say.
You couldn't help the tears as they started to stream from your eyes as you could once again see her face as she smiled back at you with her (e/c) eyes. With her long (h/c) hair as it laid softy across her back as she brushed her hair in front of the mirror.
"Your mom was one of a kind. And no women alive can hold a candle to her." Your dad said as he rubbed your leg. "Except perhaps you."
You looked up at him with tears in your eyes and saw him giving you a sincere smile. You watched his eyes start to water themselves as he moved your hair behind your ear. You smiled back at him. Then you sat up in the bed.
"I didn't mean to make you upset. And your right. I should have thought about you first." Your dad said as he dropped his head for a moment. "And I'm sorry that I didn't talk to you first about her staying over like she has been. It is your home. And you have just as much of a right to say who can stay and who can't."
"Really?" You asked as you looked up at him.
"Well," he said as he slightly rolled his eyes, "to a degree that is."
You gave him a curious look. "What's that suppose to mean?"
"Your still not having boys stay in your room." Paul said back with a smile. "Even if it is Ignis."
"I think your mother might come back to life and kill me if I did that." Paul said in a joking tone as he gave you a somewhat serious look.
You slightly laugh at him. "Well let's not have that."
"Right." He said as he smiled back.
Then he dropped his head again. "And I don't want anything to happen to you. Which is why I never said anything about who Sara really is."
"I know." You said as you moved the bedding off to the side again and sat Indian style on the bed. "And I understand why you didn't say anything."
You then looked down and started playing with the edge of the sheet. "I was just upset is all. And I'm sorry I lashed out like that towards both of you. It was very rude of me and it never should have happened. Perhaps I should be the one to make a few changes myself."
Your dad slightly smiled at you. Then he reached his hand over and placed it on your side.
"Come here." He said as he started to pull you over to him.
You then slide over to him and tightly wrapped your arms his neck. He wrapped his arms around your waist completely and pulled you in close. Then he ran one hand up to the back of your head and cradled it as he pulled you against himself as he gave you a strong embrace.
"You truly are your mother." He whispered in your ear.
Then he gave you a kiss on your cheek. As the tears started to stream down your cheeks again.
"And don't ever change." He whispered. "Not for anyone. If they can't accept you for who you are. Then their not worth your time."
"I think someone remembers some of their lessons with Camela." You whispered back as you fought to speak through the tears.
"That actually was more from Tracy than Camela." He said as he rubbed your back. "She told me to never try and change you. But instead, accept you for the amazing person that you are. And she's right. You are amazing. And that is something I never want to change."
"I love you dad." You quietly said as you choked through the tears.
"I love you too kiddo." He said back then gave you a kiss on the head.
Then after a few moments he pulled away and looked at you. "Shall we join the others? I hate to keep your bodyguard waiting."
You smirked back at him as you released him.
"Again." You teased back. "He's not my bodyguard. He's my boyfriend."
"Is there really a difference?" He said with smile.
You half laughed as you dropped your head. Perhaps he was right.
"Come on." He said as he stood up again. "Let's head down."
"Right." You smiled back and got up yourself.
As you exited Ignis' bedroom you heard voices coming from downstairs.
"Thank you for calling. We just need to ask her a few questions is all." You heard a strange voice say.
You looked down into the living room area and saw two gentleman in suits and one police officer in uniform. Immediately your heart rate shot through the roof. What the hell where they doing here? Then you looked over at the dining room table and saw someone with Tracy as they were hovered over something.
"What's going on?" You asked your dad as you started down the stairs.
"I was just wondering the same thing." Your dad said as he picked up the pace a bit as he descended the stairs.
"I'm sure that won't be a problem. Anything we can do to assist with the investigation." Korn said to the investigators. "In fact when she's ready you can use my office."
"Thank you." The senior investigator replied.
"Ignis, would you mind showing them to the study?" Korn said to Ignis as he stood off to the side.
"Yes sir." Ignis said.
"This way please." Ignis said as he started to lead them away.
You each exchanged a quick smile as he passed you as he walked them to the office.
"Did you call them?" Paul asked Korn as he walked up to him.
"I did." Korn said as he turned to face Paul. "We already know that they needed to talk to Sara. But we can't have them take her in. So I invited them to come here to talk to her and gather her fingerprints."
"Is that wise?" Paul asked as he watched them turn the corner as they headed for the office that was below Ignis room.
"Wiser then trying to fight them like you did last night." Korn said as he gave Paul a hard look.
"I wasn't fighting them. I was just laying down the rules." Paul said as he crossed his arms.
"Uh-ha. Sure." Korn said with a skeptical tone. "Either way, we don't want to interfere with their investigation. They might have an insight in this that we don't. I've also told them about the kids getting attacked last night. They wanted to see them as well so that they can chat with them.
"Now why the hell did you tell them about that?" Paul asked as we was starting to get upset now.
"Because if Ignis is right, which he's usually never wrong. It was nothing more then gang activity. Which is none of our concern." Korn stated as he watched him. "Not that we're not doing our own investigation. But as of right now, they have the lead."
Paul sighed as he rolled his eyes and crossed his arms. "Fine. But Sara still needs to get some sleep. We were up most of the night."
"She can rest as soon as they are done." Korn said as he watch the energy seem to drain from Paul. "And I might suggest you join her when she does. You look like your about to drop."
"I must look bad if you noticed." Paul joked back. "But yeah. I'll take you up on that offer. I don't think the coffee is working anymore. Of course in the meantime, I was hoping to take a look outside and see if I can find the blunt now that its morning. Plus I want to call the team and have them start to search the hotel next door to see if they can find the spent shell."
"Sounds good." Korn said as he looked at you.
"And in why don't you eat something." Korn said to you. "I believe that Ignis left yours in the kitchen for you."
"That's okay. I'm not...."
Grrrrrrooooowl went your stomach.
Your dad looked at you as he raised up one eyebrow.
"Fine." You said as you rolled your eyes and headed into the kitchen to grab your breakfast.
As you walked in, you saw that everything had been cleaned up and put away already. With the exception of two covered plates that were sitting on a hot plate on the island. You smiled as you looked at it. It looked like he might have waited to eat with you. Then just as you were getting ready to remove the lid from one of them, Ignis walked in.
"Good." He said with a smile as he walked up behind you. "I'm glad you decided to eat."
"My stomach insisted." You said with a smile as he wrapped his arms around your waist as you still had the lid in your hand.
"Well I'm glad." He said then gave you a kiss on the cheek. "Because I'm famished."
"Why did you wait then? You could have eaten with everyone else." You said as you put the lid back down and turned to face him.
"The cook always eats last." He said as he met your gaze as he pulled you close to him again as he tighten up his arms. "And besides, what kind of gentleman would I be if I made you eat on your own."
You turned around and smiled big at him as you wrapped your arms around his neck.
"What did I do to deserve you?" You asked as he smiled at you.
"Darling." He started as he leaned his head closer to yours. "That's a question that I have been asking myself about you, for several years now."
"And what is the answer?" You whispered as you leaned in closer so that your lips just barely brushed his.
"I'm not one hundred percent certain." He whispered back as he pulled you closer. "But I think, its love."
"I think so too." You said as you felt your heart soar.
Then you leaned in and passionately kissed him. Both of you deeply exhaled as you embraced the tender moment between the two of you. Each of you enjoying each other as you slowly kissed. Never had you felt so loved in your life, as you did at that moment. You knew then that you were meant to be with him. No matter what.
"Ignis, (y/n)?" You heard your dad call from the living room.
"Yeah?" You asked as you pulled away breathlessly.
"After you two are done eating, I could use your help." He called back.
"Sure thing. dad." You said as you looked up at Ignis as his eyes seemed to be real emeralds as they shined back at you.
"I'll grab the plates." He said with a smile.
"And I'll grab the drinks." You smiled back.
******Author Note******
Okay. Now that you and your dad are on the same page now. It's time to investigate the pool and see if there are any clues as to who would want to take out Korn. And why.
I hope that you enjoyed the calmer chapter. Even if It did have some high emotions. At least there weren't bullets and bombs this time.
But be sure to keep an eye out for the next chapter as the investigation starts into all of the recent attacks, starting with the assassination attempt on Korn.
Thanks for reading. :)
