Chapter 34 - Kitchen Helper
RICK nodded and gave Ignis a huge smile. "Welcome to the dive team Ignis."
Ignis simply smiled back at Rick. "Thank you."
You felt your heart soar as you heard those words. Ignis stood there and grinned back at his uncle as if in shock. Korn smiled back at him with a proud look. Finally you couldn't stand it and grabbed him around the waist and gave him a big hug.
"Congratulations." You said as you squeezed him. "I'm so happy for you."
Ignis smiled as his rubbed your back with his hand. Then you released him with a huge grin on your face. He smiled back at you and grabbed your hand. He gave it a slight squeeze as he gave you overjoyed look. You smiled back and slightly nodded.
"I do hope that your ready for some long workouts." The coach said as he looked at Ignis.
"Are you kidding?" You chimed in. "This guy can handle anything that you throw at him." You said as you gave Ignis a confident smile.
Ignis smiled back at you, then turned back to the coach. "What will these workouts entail?" Ignis asked as his face became straight again.
"Well, we practice for one hour everyday after school and for two hours every saturday. This is done before swim practice starts. You will still be required to race in the pool as well as compete on the board, so don't miss any practices." Rick explained as he watched Ignis' reaction to see if he was going to back down.
Ignis simply nodded then turned to his uncle. Korn smiled and nodded back.
"Not to worry." Koran said to his nephew. "As I promised, I'll ease up on your studies during the swim season. Besides, it sounds like you're going to be pretty busy for the next few months."
"But." Korn said then he turned to you. "This doesn't mean that you will be relaxing though. In fact as of today, you'll be starting your studies with me." He said as he gave you a very serious look.
You gave him a bit of a shocked expression.
"Since you'll be staying at the citadel for awhile, we might as well get you going on you lessons." He said as he reached over and grabbed your arm as he pulled you away from Ignis.
"Let's walk and I'll explain what you'll be required to do." Korn said as he released your arms and put his other hand on your back as he turned you towards the door that led out of the pool.
You nervously looked back at Ignis as you were being escorted away. Ignis simply nodded at you then turned back to the coach.
"You will be receiving training in several different areas to include cooking. Which will start today, with you making breakfast for us." Korn said in a casual voice as if he was giving instructions to one of the servants. Then he stopped and dropped his hand as he turned back to look at Ignis and Rick.
"Ignis." He called over, which instantly made Ignis look up. "Please see our guest to the door when you are done. Then join us in the dining room for breakfast. But do take your time. Miss (y/n) will be cooking this morning and this may take a while."
As you looked at Ignis, you thought that you saw a hint of concern cross his face as he looked at you. But it was gone before you could really register it.
"Yes sir". Ignis responded quickly and slightly nodded to him.
"Thank you again for stopping by Mr. Clifton." Korn said to the coach.
"And I do hope that you can help out my nephew. Just mind that he does seem to get distracted sometimes." Korn said as he turned and looked at you with the last phrase.
You were taken back by his words.
"There won't be any cause for concern." Rick reassured him. "The training schedule keeps them pretty busy."
"Good." Korn answered back as he looked at you.
Then he pushed you towards the door again.
"Have a good day then." He called back as he opened the door for you to exit.
You chanced one last glance back at Ignis, but you didn't get his attention since he was talking to Rick. So you turned your attention back to Korn as you thanked him while you walked out of the door as you headed for the kitchen. You signed as you walked, for you had a feeling that you and Ignis weren't going to be spending much time with each other for the next few months, at least not by yourselves. The thought made you a bit nervous and worried which, out of habit, made you start to rub your hands together.
Korn glanced over at you and watched how you nervously wrung your hands together as you walked down the hallway. He knew that you were nervous and very unsure about everything now. He had seen the same reaction from a certain little blond with glasses after receiving the news about his late brother. But he knew that the best thing for you would be to stay as busy as possible so that you didn't fall into depression from worrying about your parents.
Besides, it would give you something to do that would help you move forward with your training. He just hoped that you would be able to keep up the pace with Ignis considering the circumstances. But of course that didn't mean that he was going to go easy on you. In fact, he figured that he was going to have to be harder, just to ensure that you stayed focused. Not and ideal approach, but necessary in this case.
"Stop wringing your hands." He ordered coldly as he tried to snap you out it. "Your hands should always be kept at your sides. Not fumbling in front of you"
You nervously dropped your hands to your sides as you walked. But you never raised your gaze. Instead you clutched your hands into fists.
So much for a warm start to training. You though as you continued down the hallway. Although, I'm starting to see why Ignis never smiled when I first met him?
"For your training this morning, I want to see how well you can handle yourself in the kitchen. This includes setting the table and ends when you having everything cleaned up and put away." Korn said as he opened the door that led you to the main foyer. You thanked him again as you walked through the door as he held it open for you.
"I will keep this morning simple though, considering that it's just breakfast." Korn continued as you both walked across the foyer as you headed towards the kitchen that was in the living quarters. "But I will expect more with each meal. Plus I'll add in other challenges for you to overcome, like being out of ingredient or a not having a certain kitchen item. For a good retainer must be able to overcome any issue that comes about."
You quietly walked beside him as you listened.
This seems more like a reality show then a training session. You thought as you absently walked up and grabbed the door so that you could hold it open for him to walk through. But if what Ignis told me about him is true. I should expect to be constantly challenged, and pushed harder as we go along.
You kept your gaze down as he walked through the door. You wanted to ask questions. But at the moment, you weren't quite sure what you would ask. Besides, he didn't seem to want you to talk anyway. It was more like he was demanding the silence from you as he walked and talked with you.
This might not be as much fun as I thought it was going to be. You thought to yourself as you followed behind him as you let the door shut behind you. Of course it might help if I knew more about him. Besides that he trains like a hard ass.
"May I ask you..." You started to say.
"Right now, you should be listening and not asking questions." Korn said as he looked at you to watch your reaction.
You immediately stopped talking and dropped your gaze more. You felt embarrassed and angry with yourself that you had even tried to talk. You wanted to argue back, but your parents had always taught you to be respectful, so you would do as he says. Even if it meant being silent and acting as if you were no more than a servant yourself. After all, wasn't that part of the training, learning to be silent and listen? Korn slightly smiled then turned to face back towards the hallway.
"Starting today you will cook all of your own meals. It's not the kitchen staffs' responsibility to make sure that your fed. You will also be responsible for keeping your suite clean. This will be inspected by me everyday to ensure that you are cleaning correctly. If I don't find it to my satisfaction, you will have to clean it again as well as another room of my choosing." Korn said as you continued to walk back to the living quarters.
As you approached the door, you once again opened the door for him.
Korn walked through without so much as a thank you. Which was starting to bother you, but you kept your gaze down so that you could see how this was going to go. For it almost felt like you were being thrown into a cinderella world or perhaps bootcamp. But either way, it was definitely not what you had expected.
"You will do well to continue holding the door for everyone else as well, not just for me. You will always be the last one through the door from now on." Korn said as you followed behind him.
"This is to remind you that you are no longer a guest at the citadel, but a trainee instead." He explained as he glanced back at you.
You glanced back up at him for a moment. Only to have his eyes look coldly at you. You dropped your gaze again.
Wow, the floor has a warmer glow to it then he does. You thought as you saw the sunlight shine on the floor through the doorways along the hallway.
Suddenly he turned into the dining room that was just off of the hallway. You raised you gaze and glanced around the room. The long table and high back chairs immediately reminded you of the first time that you had been in this room. King Regis and Noctis had sat at one end while you and your parents had sat at the other.
But this time, the room had a warmer glow to it then it did that night. That night, the room had a cooler glow since it had been brightly lite with the overhead chandelier and the numerous wall lights. That morning, the curtains were drawn to allow the warm sunshine to pour in through the double doors that led out to the garden. The sight took your breath away as it brought a smile to your face. You walked up and stopped behind the chair that you had sat in the last time you had been in the room as you took in the view.
You had never seen a more beautiful sight. For it seemed like a lifetime ago since you had seen the sun. So much had happened last night that you never thought it was going to end. The thought of it all caused a tightening in your chest. For it had been around this time yesterday that you had arrived at the farm house to start the weapons training with everyone. Which means that it had been twenty-four hours since you last saw your parents.
You dropped your gaze as your eyes started to glaze over again. You could see your dad's face once more as he smiled at you just before you left.....
"It looks like you three will be plenty tired after today's events."
You felt your lip start to quiver as you tried to keep from crying again.
If I had known how true that statement was going to be, I wouldn't have left. You thought as you clutched your hands at your sides.
Korn had stopped in his tracks and was watching you as you fought with yourself. He glanced out the window, then turned back to you. He could picture what you were thinking about. But he knew that he had to distract you again before you became fixated with the pain. He had seen Ignis go down that path, and it had almost taken him. He didn't want another experience like that.
"Let's go." Korn sternly said so that you would snap out of it. "Kitchen's this way."
You jerked back up as you were brought back out of your trance. You took a labored breath and wiped your eyes with your hand, but you didn't reply or look at him. Instead you simply turned towards him and the kitchen as you dropped your hands back down with your gaze to the floor. It's not like you could do anything now to change what had happened. All you could do now was wait and see what the future had enstored for you.
You barely heard what Korn was telling you as you were lost in your own thoughts. It was like hearing him from a distance. You knew he was talking, but you couldn't seem to comprehend what he was saying. Everything around you seemed to just be a dream, a really bad dream.
After walking into the kitchen Korn started giving you instructions. "You will be cooking all of your meals in here, to include packing your own meals for school. You will be preparing dinner with the rest of the staff, but you will only be cooking for Ignis and myself. You will not help with preparing the King's or Prince's meals. The staff will not assist you with preparing the meals, they will simply be in the room as well as they are preparing their meals. Consider it as sharing a kitchen counter if you will." Korn was saying before he turned around and looked at you and saw that you weren't really pay attention.
"(Y/n)?" He called. But you didn't respond. "(Y/N)!" He shouted at you.
You quickly jerked your gaze back up and looked at him. You stared at him for a minute before you realized that he had been talking to you.
"Did you hear a single thing that I just said?" He angered asked as he crossed his arms and stared hard at you.
You dropped your gaze again as you could feel your cheeks getting red.
"No. I'm sorry." You quietly said as you could feel your eyes starting to water again.
"Never say your sorry to me again." He said in a low growl. "Being sorry is an excuse and we don't have time for excuses."
"Yes sir." You quietly said. "I'm sorry I upset you."
"STOP SAYING YOUR SORRY!" He shouted at you.
You jerked back slightly as you closed your eyes.
Fuck. He's really pissed now. You thought to yourself as you felt your heart start to race. What is it that Ignis is always saying? Oh yeah.
"My apologies." You quietly said as you kept your eyes shut.
"It won't happen again sir." You said as you slowly opened your eyes.
"Good." He said in a lower tone. "As I was saying, you will be preparing breakfast and dinner for both Ignis and myself. The kitchen staff will not help in any way. You will simply be sharing a kitchen with them. You will be doing this until the swim season is over. If you do well, then you and Ignis will both prepare the meals. If not, you will continue to prepare the meals by yourself. Do you understand?" He asked as he gave you a hard look.
"Yes sir." You said without looking at him.
He quickly walked up and stood in front of you. He grabbed your chin and forced you to look at him.
"You will look at me when you talk to me." He said in a harsh voice. "No more looking away. No more murmuring towards anyone. You will look them straight in the eye as you talk to them."
You gave him a startled look.
What the hell? Since when did I get to boat camp? You thought as you stared at him.
Then you tightened your jaw as you felt beverage your anger start to build up.
And who the hell does he think that he is to grab and yell at me like this? You thought as you gave him a hard look.
Korn smiled at your reaction, then let go of your chin.
"Good." He said as he stepped back. "For breakfast this morning you will prepare two eggs over easy with two links of sausage, lightly browned, two pieces of bacon, slightly crispy, and two pieces of toast lightly buttered with a hint of cinnamon sugar for each of us. We will be drinking fresh squeezed orange juice and I will also have a cup of coffee, Ebony to be precise, with one sugar and two creams." He stood there for a minute.
"Think you can handle that?" He asked as he watched you.
"Yes sir." You said with a bit of an edge in your voice as you stared straight back at him.
I thought he was going to make this a challenge. You thought to yourself as you recalled the items in your head and exactly how he wants them. I could do this order in my sleep.
"Good." He said as he started walking back towards the dining room door.
"We'll be waiting in the garden when you are ready to serve us." He said and walked out the door.
You watched as he walked out with a stern look on your face.
Don't worry. You won't be waiting long. You thought to yourself as you stared at the door.
Then you exhaled and started to relax.
Well first things first. Let's see what I have to work with. You thought as you looked around the kitchen for the first time.
You were in awe as you started to really look around, never had you been in a kitchen quite as elaborate as this one. There were two huge pizza ovens, four standard wall mounted ovens, two steamers, a four basket deep fat fryer, a sixteen burner stove, a huge flat grill, and even a huge open pit grill. All of the counters were made of steel and shined brightly from the lights above them. You noticed all of the potwear was neatly stored under the counters on the steel shelves.
You ran your hands along the cold steel as you walked around the kitchen. You walked towards the back of the kitchen and found their two huge walk-in refrigerators. You opened up one and walked in to see that it was full of fresh fruit, vegetables and spices. You nodded your head when you realized that it was the cooler, which means the other one would be the freezer. You smiled to yourself as you reached down and grabbed a potato and held it.
"You would be the only veggie that Noctis would eat in this whole cooler." You said with a slight chuckle before putting it back down.
Then you looked around and found the eggs, butter, and oranges on the shelves. So, you grabbed a full carton of eggs, a small tub of butter, and a bag of oranges. Then you carried it all out of the cooler and set it down on the closest counter.
Then you entered the freezer to find aspidochelon bacon and sausage. You were greeted by shelves upon shelves of meat. There was even a back section that the butchers would use to store the prepared halves and quarters of the various animals that they had slaughtered and cleaned. Never had you seen so much meat in your life. You were astounded as you looked around. But once you found the prepared bacon and sausage you walked back out.
You looked at the ingredients in your hands and smiled to yourself.
"Alright." You said to yourself after you set the meat on the counter.
"Let's get started." You said as you rolled up your sleeves and washed your hands.

Meanwhile........
"Besure to thank your uncle for me." Rick said to Ignis as they stood at the top platform just outside the main entrance doors.
"I will." Ignis returned. "And thank you again for stopping by."
"Think nothing of it. And it was a pleasure I can assure you." Rick returned with a smile. "I'll see you at practice tomorrow."
"Yes sir." Ignis said as he nodded back to Rick.
Then Rick turned on his heel and went down the stairs as he headed towards his car as it sat at the foot of the stairs. Ignis smiled to himself as he watched him walk away.
I'm glad that I made the dive team. He thought as he walked back inside.
But now I'm worried that (y/n) will be at the mercy of my uncle. I knew what he had in mind, but I had no idea that he would start it today. Ignis thought as he walked across the foyer and towards the door that led to the living quarters.
Once Ignis reached the door, he paused with his hand on the handle. He thought for a moment about the timing of everything from that morning. Then it hit him as if he had been struck by lightening. The whole thing had been planned from the beginning.
The timing of the events was to perfect for it to just be a coincident. He tightly closed his eyes while tightening his grip on the door handle as he became upset with himself that he hadn't thought of it before. The diving test and you starting your training had been planned. Then Ignis got a disheartening feeling.
Was his uncle trying to separate you from him? Why else would he arrange for the coach to come that morning? The group wasn't even suppose to be back from the farm house until this afternoon. Of course that was before the attack on your family had caused the quick departure.
Ignis shook his head.
This has my uncle written all over it. He thought then he yanked the door open.
But what's the motive behind it all? He thought as he entered the hallway.
"Something troubling you Ignis?" Ignis heard as he turned towards the entrance to the living quarters while he was lost on his thoughts.
He looked up to see Jared giving him an inquisitive look.
"It's nothing Mr. Jared." Ignis told him with a slight smile.
"But thanks for asking." Ignis said as he turned to back towards the door leading to the living quarters.
"You know." Jared started to say as he slowly walked towards Ignis as he reached for the door handle.
"Your uncle mentioned that you seemed to be a bit out of sorts." Ignis stopped with his hand on the door handle when he heard those words.
"You know that you can always ask me for guidance if your stuck on something or if you just need someone to talk to." Jared said more in a grandfather kind of way, oppose to his usual calm butler way.
Ignis slowly turned back around and looked at Jared.
"Would you happen to remember when he mentioned that to you?" Ignis asked as he carefully watched Jared's reaction.
Jared thought for a moment. "Hmm. I would say right around the beginning of the school year." He said as he put his hand on his chin. "Yeah. it was right around the first or second week of school. You had been leaving the house shortly after arriving and not getting back until late."
Ignis dropped his head as he thought about the time frame.
That was right after (y/n) got hurt. I was stopping by her house to help her out with her studies. Ignis concluded. But why would he mention it to Jared?
But then he suddenly understood why. Who else had better access to seeing everything that comes and goes in this place then him? Besides, he had been there every time you had came by and when he was dashing out. His uncle had been using Jared as his own personal spy within the walls.
Then his eyes shot wide open.
Then if that's the case. Who else is he using to spy on me? Could he be using Monica and Gina as well? Ignis thought as he slowly looked around as he tried to keep his temper in check. After all of these years, he still doesn't trust me. Despite everything that's happened.
"Are you alright ignis?" Jared asked with a concerned voice.
Ignis looked back up at Jared with slight smile. That disappeared rather quickly.
"Yes. I am." He said then looked towards the door with a stern look.
"Thank you Jared." Ignis said without looking back as he walked over and entered the hallway that would lead him straight to his uncle.
As soon as he entered the hallway, he could smell the tantalizing smell of eggs, bacon, sausage and even toast. He took a deep breath of the smell as he walked towards the dining room. His stomach growled at the smell. He slightly smiled to himself as he remembered that he had not eaten anything since dinner at the farm house.
I haven't even thought about food until this very moment. Ignis mused to himself as he followed the aroma into the dining room. Perhaps she is distracting me a bit. But if its because of her cooking, then I don't mind.
Ignis smiled to himself as he walked into the dining room. He noticed that the table had already been set with three settings. He walked over to the table and looked at the silverware. He slightly smiled as he ran his fingers down the grip of a fork as he recalled watching you setting the table at your house. He remembered how you carefully had set down each utensil.
Ignis was lost in his thoughts when the door to the kitchen opened up. He turned to see you walking out with your back on the door as you pushed it open. You were carrying out a tray that had glasses and what looked to be a pitcher of orange juice. You didn't see him as you carefully turned around once you were through the door.
"Need some help with that?" Ignis asked with a smile.
You slightly jumped at his voice which caused the ice cubes to click against the glass of the pitcher.
"Ahh." You said.
Then you looked up at him with your head slightly tilted to the side with a slight smirk on your face.
Ignis put his hands up.
"Sorry. I didn't mean to startle you." He said with a slight smile.
"Don't say your sorry." You said as you walked over to the table.
"Sorry is an excuse. As I found out today." You quietly said as you started putting the glasses at each setting.
Ignis slightly dropped his head as he watched you put down the last glass.
"I see he hasn't wasting anytime with that lesson." He said as you sat the pitcher on a towel in front of the dishes.
"No he did not." You quietly said as you grabbed the tray.
You tried not to think about how you had been yelled at about that word. Then you turned to walk away. But Ignis caught your arm as you headed back to the kitchen.
"Can I help you out?" He asked again as he rubbed his thumb against your skin.
Your felt your skin tingle under his touch.
"You can't. He gave me strict instructions that I had to do this on my own until after swim season it over." You said with your head down as you slowly removed his hand.
"Besides, I think he want to talk to you. He's been waiting for you in the garden." You said as you pushed the kitchen door open and walked through without looking back.
Ignis stood still for a moment as he watched the door close behind you. He hadn't expected to hear that.
So that was the plan. He thought to himself as he looked towards the garden. Trade out one for the other. I wonder what else he has planned then. He thought as he turned towards the garden.
But just as he was about to head into garden he heard a commotion in the kitchen.
"GINA!" He heard you shout. "What are you doing?"
Ignis quickly turned back around and dashed into the kitchen. When he opened the door he saw Gina standing in front of the flat grill with a spatula in her hand and a shocked look on her face. You were standing there with a frustrated look on your face as you stared down at the now scrambled eggs that were cooking on the grill. Ignis slowly started walked over to where you both were standing.
"Gina?" You asked with a disappointed voice. "Why did you do that? They were perfect."
"No they weren't." Gina returned with disgusted look. "The yellow was still runny." She said then turned back to smashing and scrambling the eggs on the grill. "See. Their all cooked now."
You rolled your eyes as you grunted. "They were suppose to be like that." You quietly said.
Then you walked towards the counter so that you could grab some more eggs. "He didn't ask for scrambled. He wanted them over easy."
"Well I like mine scrambled." She said as she happily pushed the eggs around on the grill.
You looked back at her with a slight grin.
"Well then you can have them." You said as you reached down and grabbed a plate from under the counter.
Gina turned around and looked at you with big bright eyes. "Really?" She asked. "Your not going to be mad at me."
"No." You said as you took the pancake turner from her.
Then you gathered up the eggs from the grill and put them on the plate.
"You did cook them." You said as you finished putting the eggs on her plate.
"So why shouldn't you eat them." You said with a smile as you handed her the plate that was now heaping with eggs.
Gina looked up at you with a huge smile on her face. Then she proudly walked off with the eggs as she headed for the dining room. You followed her with your eyes as she left the room. Then you noticed Ignis walking towards you with a smile as he nodded his head.
"What?" You asked as you turned the pancake turner on its side and cracked the first egg on the edge.
Then you carefully cracked it the rest of the way as you dropped it on the grill.
"I may have started them, but she did finish them. Just not the way that your uncle wants them done." You said as you cracked another egg and put it on the grill near the first.
"He is a bit picky on his food." Ignis said as he walked up behind you.
You continued to put down more eggs so that you would have enough for the three of you. Once all of the eggs were down you stood up and waited. But then you felt his arms wrap around your waist as you stood there. You felt your body slightly heat up from his touch. Then you felt his breath on your neck as he pulled you close.
"It smells wonderful." He said as he brought his head closer to your neck.
You smiled as you felt your heart rate slightly increase.
"Thank you." You quietly said.
"Can I taste?" He ask in deeper voice as he moved his head even closer.
"I think that you can wait until their done." You teased. "They have to cook first."
"But it looks go good." He said in a husky voice.
You could feel his breath on your neck as he lips slightly brushed against it. You felt your breath catch as you realized that it wasn't the eggs he wanted to taste. You felt your heart speed up as he slightly nudged your head to the side so that he had full access to your neck. You were starting to get lost in his touch as he tighten up his grip on you as he pulled you closer.
"Can I?" He asked again as he lips nearly brushed against your neck which caused you to close your eyes.
"What about your uncle?" You softly asked as you placed one hand on his and wrapped your fingers around his.
"He can get his taste from someone else." Ignis said as he placed a gentle kiss on your neck which caused you to shudder against his touch.
This reaction seemed to be like adding fuel to the fire that Ignis had already started. As he let out a deep raspby breath as he paused. Then gently kissed you again as he slightly increased the intensity. You shivered in his arms as the sensation seemed to go straight to your core. He smiled against your neck before kissing your neck again with more intensity. You slightly moaned as you tried to control yourself.
Holy shit. I have to stop that? It's just a kiss. You thought as you felt like you were falling into a sea of bliss.
"He could walk in at any minute." You breathlessly said as you struggled with the heat that was raising up.
"I know." He said as he started to kiss your neck hard again as he felt like he was losing control.
"But I can't help it. Your taste is so addicting." He said then latched onto your neck as he took in a rugged breath.
You felt your body melt against his as you felt the heat coming off of him.
"Please stop." You breathed against him. "Before we can't."
He released his kiss from your neck only to give you one more gentle one. His breath was still hot and rugged against your neck.
"Perhaps later than." He said in a deep voice.
"Perhaps." You said back in a heated voice.
Then he tighten his embrace once more time as he released a deep breath. Then he loosened up his arms and gave you a kiss on your cheek.
"I'll let you go for now." He said as he released you completely.
"But you are going to make this difficult for me." He said as he took a step back.
"How so?" You asked as you glanced back at him as he moved to your side.
"Well with you in the kitchen, I have two of my favorite things in one place." He said as he shot you a seductive look.
"Well then your just going to have to learn how to behave yourself aren't you." You said as you teased him back.
"Just like you at the pool right?" He said with a slick smile.
"Hey. I...um". You stammered at him. "How did you....?"
"You are as easy to read as a book when it comes to your emotions." He said as he started to walked back towards the door.
"Especially when you lowered your eyes on me earlier." He said then slipped out the door.
Your face turned bright red and your heart stopped at his words.
Shit. He saw that? You thought in shock as you stood there afraid to move.
