21 - Shade

We hide in different ways in this world. We pay for everything with cash, even if that means using cash to buy prepaid credit cards. I cover my ears and tail, unless I am in a place where people know I have them. We use different names in different places with different people, to avoid what Husband calls "large patterns" -- he believes several people each doing one strange thing is better than two people doing many strange things.

When we mine or harvest, we use our Gatherer's Sneak, which seems to work as well in Earth as in Eorzea. Husband compares it to something in a story called a Somebody Else's Problem field: people see what we do and simply do not care.

But this will not work in someone's home, or someone's car, or following someone or listening to what someone says. For this we use our Rogue Sneak, and pass silently, unnoticed, like a breeze or a spirit or a shade. We can learn secrets this way, or at least things people would not otherwise tell us, like what one mother told her children about me, even though she had never met me and the things she was telling were not true.

I have talked with Husband about being spies, since they probably make more money than we do at the diner. He thought of several problems with that. One is that spies commonly work for governments, and he does not think governments should learn of us. Another is that we do not know when our stealth does not work...I found in one woman's house that her cat could see me even if she could not, and we do not know about other beastkin or security cameras.

One of the biggest problems, though, is that our stealth does not work well with doors and locks. Even in Eorzea, opening chests or doors in dungeons caused enemies to notice us, and that is when the chests and doors are unlocked. Here, many things are locked, and we do not know how to open locks -- there was no "lockpicking" skill there. We are trying to find out how to learn this lockpicking.

Husband has mentioned a game he used to play called Elder Scrolls Online. It seems there was much sneaking and lockpicking in that game. Perhaps he would have liked visiting the world in that game called Tamriel before we came to Oklahoma, to learn the skills there. He did make a joke about "lizard women"; perhaps he meant there are au ra.

That is definitely not an au ra. I hope that is not something he would cross the multiverse for.
