[Sept-Nov] Festivals of the Dead: Fèt Gede

F'et Gede or The Sacred Dead is the Voodoo equivalent to Mardi Gras and is celebrated in Haiti at the beginning of November.

People dress up and take to the streets where they dance and communion with their ancestors.

The festivals process graveyards with gifts and feed their ancestral dead in hopes of protection for the coming year.  They then party in graveyards and picnic on gravesites in celebration.

Practitioners are possessed by the Gede, spirits, possess the practitioners who perform precise rituals.  During the year, the spirits are invisible, but on the days of F'et Gede, they joined the living and come alive.

Each November the sacred and spectacular celebration that is Fèt Gede is the occasion for a raucous, bawdy, fiery festival that embodies Haitian culture.
