[Sept-Nov] Festivals of the Dead: El Dia de Los Muertos

Dia de Los Muertos or Day of the Dead is celebrated in Mexico.

Originally celebrated in the summer, but moved to coincide with Allhallowtide in Spain, it is celebrated from October 31st to November 2nd. Celebrated all over Mexico in a variety of different customs which vary from region to region, El Dia de Los Muertos is a joyful holiday spent with family and tales of the dead are told.

The holiday dates back hundreds of years to an Aztec festival dedicated to Mictecacihuatl, the goddess of the afterlife and underworld. The traditions include building altars, eating special food, and visiting the graves of the departed often with offerings and gifts. People leave flowers and candles, often cleaning and maintaining the graves of their deceased loved ones in hope and to encourage visits by the souls as it is usually believed that the souls hear the prayers and comments of the living directed to them. It is also believed that the veil between the living and the dead is lifted during the festival. The colourful celebrations and decorations are meant to accompany the visits of the souls and ghosts of the ancestors.
