Chapter 2
I stepped through the door and into the cold, barren landscape that awaited me. Snow littered the ground and old trees lingered above my head, closing me in. I saw but one trail through the land, so I travelled it.
As I was walking, I heard the sudden crackle of breaking wood behind me, and I twirled around in fright. On the ground there was a stick that had been more than broken, it had been obliterated. I looked around wildly to try and find the source of the noise, but none was found.
Now on guard, I continued my trek. It wasn't long before I heard the movements of another being rustling through the leafless woods, but yet again I could find no such creature.
I was now certain that I was being watched. I kept walking on, and eventually came to a small bridge that lay across a fissure so small that it could be jumped across. Above the bridge was a horizontal wooden pole that extended and hung over the crack with several vertical poles extending down from it.
I heard footsteps behind me, and I froze. The sound got closer and closer, until it stopped right behind me. I turned around, not sure of what sort of fate that I had in store.
Standing there I found a short fellow with no meat on his bones--literally. He was a stubby skeleton in a blue parka. His eyes glowed inside his skull as if by magic, and he had a stupid grin on his skinless face.
He stuck out his hand. "Is that how you greet a new friend?"
I reluctantly shook the strange figure's hand, and instantly regretted it. As my hand pressed into his, a rather perverse sound slipped out.
"Ah, the old whoopie cushion in the hand trick. What a classic," he said. "The name is Sans. What's yours, human?"
I didn't answer.
"Oh, you're the silent type I see. What is it, do you not have the GUTS to say your mind?"
I became disappointed in my new acquaintance already.
"Not impressed? Please don't wear that face, it makes me feel like you have a BONE to pick with me."
I became increasingly disappointed with all of the skeleton puns.
"Sheesh, tough crowd. Come on, don't let it get under your SKIN. Let's go through the gate. My brother, Papyrus, made the RIBS too big for the to stop anyone."
That's supposed to be a gate?!
We walked across the tiny bridge. If it wasn't for that stupid "gate" blocking my way I would have totally just jumped across. We kept walking for a little bit after that, and we came to a sort of clearing. There was a broken down shack and a very oddly shaped lamp, but not really much else of notice.
"My brother, he's an interesting one," said the chatterbox named Sans. "He's pretty bent on catching a human, so if you would play along a little bit then that would be great. Oh, here he comes! Quick, behind that conveniently shaped lamp!"
Eh, sure, why not? I hit behind the large lamp, that was for some reason molded in a very human-like shaped. I spied on the conversation from behind it.
Into the clearing came another skeleton, this time a very tall and lanky one. His main defining feature was an orange scarf that he wore. There were also several pokeballs at his waist, which surprised me. This was the one called Papyrus.
"Hey Sans! Have you seen any humans today?"
"Nope," he lied. "Not one. Maybe they're chilled to the BONE knowing that I'm on sentry duty."
"Stop with those disastrous puns! And of course you haven't seen any, you're always just lazing around! That's okay though, because that leaves more for the great Papyrus to find! Yes, the day shall soon come when I become part of the Royal Guard! Then, I'll be famous and everyone will love me!"
"Mhm, alright bro. Whatever you say."
"It's true! It will be at least! Whatever, you wouldn't understand anyways! I'll see you later... NUMBSKULL!"
At that, Papyrus scurried off into the woods.
"BONEHEAD!" Sans yelled after him. "You can come out now," Sans said to me.
That was certainly an interesting interaction. I came out of hiding.
"Yep, that was my brother. He's cool, huh? Anyways, see you later I guess." He tucked his gloved hands in his pockets, and stood there absentmindedly.
Is he going to do anything? I waited around a little more to see if he would do anything, but sure enough he didn't. Okay then, time to move on.
I walked through the winding forest, the cold not bothering me as I was used to Mt. Silver, but I wasn't finding much. That was the case, at least, until I walked in front of a crudely made cardboard sentry post.
"Something moved! I saw it!" Out of the box rose a humanoid dog. His mask covered eyes darted around, as if he was looking for something.
Maybe he can't see me. To test my theory I tried moving.
"There it is! Movement! Come on out Tyrunt!" He released a small T-Rex-like pokemon. Now the two of them were both scanning for movement.
Oh yay, he has a pokemon too, and it's a very... fitting one. I let out one of my own, a Snorlax. The lazy giant bear plopped down in between them and me and obstructed our sights of each other.
"Something moved, didn't it Tyrunt? Crunch!"
The little brown dinosaur jumped blindly forward and bit my Snorlax. However, it didn't even bother or hurt the lazy pokemon.
"What is it Tyrunt? Did you find something?"
Tyrunt growled.
"I don't understand, I don't see any movement. Did a wall suddenly appear in front of us."
As funny as this was, it wasn't getting us anywhere. "Heavy Slam."
Snorlax rolled over onto the two of them, winning the battle without any further trouble.
I recalled my pokemon and looked at the two on the ground. Tyrunt was definitely fainted, but the dog was still conscious.
"Oh, I see. You're a trainer! Sorry, I mistook you for an enemy human!" He pushed himself up off the ground. "I'm Doggo."
I looked at the strange dog. If only you knew... I nodded and walked off.
After that I ran into a familiar crew. Sans and Papyrus were talking, but they heard my footsteps and looked my way.
"Oh yeah, I have something to show you, Papyrus."
"What is it? Is it that?"
They looked past me. I looked back to see what they were looking at, and it was just a rock.
"Don't tell me Sans, you want me to use Rock Smash on that rock?"
"No no no, in front of the rock."
They looked at me, then at each other, then at me, then each other, and back and forth until it finally occurred to Papyrus what he was looking at.
"Is that a human?!"
"Yep."
"Wow! A human, in the flesh! I better set up my puzzles to trap him!" He now talked directly to me. "Human! When you've prepared yourself come and challenge my puzzles, so I can ultimately stump and trap you!" He ran off somewhere, ignoring the perfect chance to catch me.
"Yeah, he has a bit of a thick SKULL when it comes to this sort of thing. He's a cool guy though." He then just stood there, not doing anything after finishing stating his thoughts.
I'm not sure that you're much better. When did you get here anyways?! I shrugged, then moved on. I followed the path of the skinny skeleton, and I found him waiting for me. On three sides around us there were sheer drops down into nothingness, and the only way to go was a small footpath behind the skeleton. And of course, Sans was somehow magically there as well.
"Human! Solve my puzzle!"
I looked around but saw no puzzle.
"That's right! It's an invisible maze! If you touch the walls, then you get shocked!"
Nope. I let out Charizard and hopped on his back. He understood my intentions, and lifted off the ground. We flew over the puzzle and the dangerous drops like they were nothing.
"Hey! You can't do that! Come back here and solve the puzzle!" Papyrus ran after me by foot, but was no match for Charizard's air speed, especially since he had to deactivate several other puzzles that he had planned for me on his way.
I found a nice looking town, and so I swooped down and landed there. It was a quiet town of mostly log cabins, and it was labeled with a sign that said "Snowdin." Walking through the streets were more varieties of humanoid monsters, who were just living out their lives normally.
I walked through the town, not really seeing anything in particular that I wanted to do. With my experience, half the doors in the town were probably locked anyways. There really was nothing that caught my interest in the town, so I just kept on walking, and I made it out without problems.
However, as I kept pressing forward, a thick fog formed around me, and I stopped.
"Human!" said a familiar skeleton voice. "You may not like puzzles, and may have thrown away hours of my time that I spent making those puzzles, but that's okay! Why? Because I, Papyrus, will simply catch you the old fashioned way! Go, Duskull!"
A glowing red eye pierced through the fog and stared at me, awaiting my next move.
This time I decided to use my Venusaur, simply because I hadn't used it in this world yet. "Petal Blizzard." Flower petals erupted out of my Venusaur's large flower and pelted towards the ghost in the mist. The force of the attack and the breeze that it created managed to both knock out the Duskull and temporarily blew away the fog.
"Not half bad," said Papyrus, clearly shaking in his boots. "But can you deal with this!"
He sent out a Cubone, which my Venusaur simply slapped away with its vines.
"Oh, so you really are pretty strong! If you keep pressing me, then I might have to use my special attack!"
Next a Mandibuzz was brought into battle. I wondered why he would have a Mandibuzz, but then I saw the bone in its hair and I made the mental connection. She too was swatted away.
"I guess that I'll have to use my special attack after all! Are you ready? Do you really think that you can handle this?!"
I stood there, waiting patiently for him to just get it over with.
"Very well! Here it goes! My special attack!" He let out a Marowak, and soon as he did, the two of them engaged in some sort of overly complicated secret handshake. It took at least a minute to finish, but when they finally did, they high fived. "Bone Club! Get it?! We have a secret handshake because we're in a club about bones, which you aren't in? Ha, hilarious right?!"
I mean it's a little funny. I didn't show any amount of amusement.
"Oh alright, you win! You might not be very cool, or like puzzles, but at least you don't seem like a bad person! I'll let you go... just this once, okay?!" He winked.
I nodded.
"Alright! I'll let you pass then!" He brought back his Marowak, then let out his fainted Mandibuzz. "Defog!"
As if my magic, the Mandibuzz temporarily awoke and activated its move, only to once again pass out after clearing the fog.
"I'll be at my home in Snowdin if you ever want to hang out again! See you later human!" The very loud skeleton ran off after that, and I was allowed to continue on my journey.
