Dazed
Danny's POV:
I can feel myself being dragged out of unconsciousness. Slowy, I'm beginning to become more aware of my surroundings. I can hear faint beeping somewhere in this room. What the hell is that? I didn't set my alarm clock last night, did I? The sound screamed in my ears, making my head pound. Ugghh, how much did I have to drink last night? I could also feel somone loosely grasping my hand.... Wait that's usually not there at home
Keen to see where the f*ck I was, I tried to open my eyes. Why was my left one so painful? I ran my free hand over the bulging lump that was my eye, wincing at the sharp pain as it contacted with my hand. I painfully opened my other eye only to be blinded by a bright light, my eye instinctly shutting....wait, I wasn't dead, was I?
I opened my eye again, but slower this time. Now that I was able to keep it open, I took in what I saw around me.
I was in a white room. I turned my head to the left and saw what was making such a racket. It was a heart rate monitor, with a lead connecting me to it. Oh. I was in a hospital. What happened last night? Why was I here?
Rolling my head back to it's previous position, I turned to look to my right to see that it was a young dark-haired woman, slumped back fast asleep, that held my hand. It was Aoife. And that's when last night's memories came flooding back.
I remember going round to see Irma because she texted me saying that she wanted us to break up, had accused me of cheating on her with Bo when I hadn't. I went over to her's when she told me not to, and I ended up being punched to the floor and beaten up by that prick. I remembered phoning Aoife, and her coming to pick me up. I remember that determined look she held in her gaze that soon turned into one of sympathy as I sobbed uncontrollably into her shoulder. I don't remember anything after that. But I'll never forget the heartache.
Desperate to stretch my aking limbs, I attempted to sit up in the bed, not prepared for the consequences. I cried out in agony as sharp pain snapped through my body. I layed back down defeated, taking heavy, shaky breaths. I gripped onto Aoife's hand tighter, desperately searching for comfort.
Sensing my discomfort, Aoife stirred from her sleep, startled by the rough contact. She blinked a few times before settling her gaze upon my now trembling body. Her gaze turned sympathetic.
"Hey, hey Dan it' s ok, shhhhh calm down" she said soothingly. ""Don't be scared, you're ok" a worried frown drawn apon her face. She leaned forward to wipe my tears away. I didn't realise that I was crying....
"I-i-it-t h-h-hurts so f-f-f*cking m-much" I confessed between sobs, gripping her hand even tighter. I'd never been in so much pain before.....
"Ok, ok I know Dan. I can't even imagine the agony your in" she said sadly. "The doc said that you can go home later on today, if you get the all clear" she said cheerfully.
I nodded and gave her a faint smile. After my panic attack, I suddenly felt really tired. My eye was closing on it's own accord.
"You go to sleep Dan, you'll feel much better afterwards" she rubbed the back of my hand with her thumb slowly.
"You won't leave me here alone, will you?" I pleaded for her not to go.
"Dan I wouldn't dream of it! If the docs need anything, they'll have to come find me!" She chuckled. Mmm I wanted to be sure though..
"Promise?" I whispered
"I Promise" she whispered back, a grin creeping to her face.
I fell asleep with a smile on my face, god we were so childish...

Aoife's POV
Within five minutes Dan was out like a light, fast asleep. My heart bleeded for him. Seeing him so scared, confused and in agony really upset me. I agreed to stay with him, my hand grasped tightly in his. Dr Wiltrow walked in.
"Helo, Miss Quinn, has he woken up yet?" He asked kindly, nodding at the sleeping young man beside me.
"Yes, he woke up for a bit a while ago. I told him to go back to sleep though, as he was the one who woke me up up earlier, as he was in agony."
"Ahhh, he must've tried to move himself, poor lad. I'll give him another dose of painkillers to ease the pain. When he wakes up again, a nurse will check him, provid you with his medication and you can go home!" He exclaimed cheerfully.
"Oh thank you so much! I'll give you a shout when he wakes up"
With that he left. A few minutes later, I recieved a text from Andi, one of Dan's sisters
New text from Andi:
Hey Aoifs, how're you doing? Good I hope! How's the casualty? Mark texted us all to say what happened, he must look such a state! Hope you're okay xxx
I chuckled at Andi's text. She was literally the female version of Dan. We had always got on as children aswell. I replied immediately:
New text to Andi:
Hey Ands, yeah I'm great ta. I think Dan's seen better days though. He'll be back to normal in a few days apparently, he has just been severely concussed and battered. Xxx
New text from Andi:
Awww well, these things happen I guess. Thanks for looking out for him. I'm sending yis my love. Hope to see yis soon xxxx
Awwww she's so cute! With that, Dan stirred in his sleep again. He was waking up. He opened his eye with a groan, fixing his gaze on me.
"H-h-hey you kept your p-promise" he croaked with a silly grin on his face. Judging by his voice, his throat was dry and irritated.
"Of course! I told you that I wouldn't leave ye! Do ye feel a bit better now?" I asked, taking in the pained expression on his face.
"I-i-i'm f-f-fine, it's just that my head's pounding and everywhere hurts..." He said, voice cracking.
"Ok, I'm gonna go fetch the doc to give ye a check over and then we'll hopefully be allowed to go home"
Dan's face lit up at the word 'home'. "Okay" he whispered tiredly.
So I turned the door handle and proceeded out to look for the doc. I eventually found him and took him back to where Dan was.
"Good morning Daniel, how are you feeling today"
"To be truly honest, I feel like shit...." He confessed. I giggled at his response.
"I see" he said with a grin, " although the drugs should help the pain, you will feel extremely tired as it's a classic side effect to concussion... vomiting and coughing are classic side-effects too. If you are up to it, you will be discharged in a few hours time" he explained.
"Oh yes, I understand. I would like to go home today please"
"Very well. Nurse Erin will prepare your medication and help Miss Quinn dress you" he said with a smirk. Oh my God.....
"Of course. Thanks for looking after me doc"
"It's a pleasure Daniel." And with that, he left. Danny gave me a cheeky smirk.
"So you're gonna help me get dressed are ye?
"Well it' s the doc's orders I suppose" I said, returning his smirk. He started giggling like a naughty schoolboy. But that soon turned into a hoarse, wheezy coughing fit, pain clear on his pale features.
"Bloody hell Dan! It wasn't that funny!" I exclaimed, rubbing my hand up and down his arm to sooth him. Eventually, his coughing subsided.
"Don't make me laugh again" he croaked hoarsely, a mock serious look on his face.
"I can't promise that" I said with a mischievous look. A nurse who I guessed was Erin walked into the room.
"Hello, I'm Erin. So Daniel-" she started but Danny interrupted
"It's Danny" he stated, an annoyed expression on his face. She laughed heartily, obviously sensing that he didn't like someone calling him by his full name.
" Sorry Danny, I've made up your medication for the next few days, which I'll give to..." she looked at me, gesturing for my name.
"Aoife" I said with a small smile
"Sure, hey that's a beautiful name, an Irish name too isn't it?" She asked curiously.
"Ye it is, we're both Irish" I said flashing her a smile, glancing at Danny who nodded in agreement.
"Ahhh I thought I recognized the accent" she said with a wink. "Where abouts in Ireland are you from?"
"We're from Dublin" Dan said throatily.
"Oh Dublin's lovely! I've been there a few times" She exclaimed excitedly.
"Cool! So where abouts are you from" I asked politely.
"I come from a small town in North Wales called Bala" she said proudly"
"Oh you're Welsh? I thought your accent sounded familiar" commented Danny. "I guess we Celtics always find each other everywhere we go" he chuckled.
"haha I suppose we do" she smiled in agreement. "Crap! I'm so sorry, I get so easily distracted!"
"It's no problem at all" I said kindly.
"The meds will obviously help a lot with the pain, but they'll also have side-affects, as Dr Wiltrow told you earlier. Before you go though, we have to dress you, we can't have you walking around London with a hospital gown!" She added jokingly. "Unfortunately though we only have the clothes you came in, but we have washed them all for you"
"Thank ye very much" said Danny gratefully.
"However, we'll have to get you stood up to change you. It's important that you tell us if you feel faint, okay?" She said, worry clear in her gaze.
"I think I'll be okay" said Danny, glancing uncertainty at me.
"We won't let you fall Dan" I reassured him.
So Erin pressed the button on the bed to move Dan into a sitting position. He winced quietly, determined to suffer in silence.
"You ok so far?" I asked, knowing that he clearly wasn't.
"I-i-i'm f-f-f-fine" he lied, determination clear in his eyes. He nodded at Erin "carry on".
She took hold of his legs, pulling them to her side of the bed and off the side. I took hold of his shoulders and turned him away from me to face her. His body trembled, he was clearly uncomfortable. Again he stayed silent.
"Dan? Are you sure you're ok?"
"Yeah" came his unusually short reply. He really wasn't going to give up. Erin grabbed his right underarm, motioning for me to go do the same. I walked round to join them on the other side of the bed, grasping the other arm.
"Right Danny, on three, we're gonna pull you up, but you've gotta use your legs to stand up, we won't let go okay?"
He nodded, gulping roughly. I could tell that he was bracing himself for indescribable pain. He was terrified.
"1, 2, 3- UP!"
We heaved Dan's body up and off the bed. Somehow, Danny found his strength and supported his weight on his legs. We both still had a tight grip on his arms, just incase his legs gave way.
He stood rigidly, nearly afraid to move. He hadn't made a peep. I glanced up to read his expression.
His eyes were closed and he took deep, shaky breaths. He was trying to convince us that he was ok, that he wasn't in pain. But I knew him, he wasn't ok. He was going through his own personal hell. Erin glanced at me worriedly.
"Danny are you ok?" She asked as his body began to tremble in our arms.
"I t-t-think that I'd better sit down for a while" he mumbled, barely audioable.
We gently lowered him down to the bed, sitting him upright. After sitting in silence, Dan spoke up.
"That was better than what I thought it was gonna be" he confessed.
"But it still hurt though" I pressed
"Yeah, but it's expected really, isn't it?" He asked Erin uncertainly
"Yes well you'll be in pain for a few days, maybe a few weeks, considering your injuries"
Dan stayed silent, deep in thought.
"Do you want to try to walk?"
He nodded in agreement before suprisingly standing up by himself. We both took hold on him and he proceeded to take one step, two steps, three steps. I must admit, he didn't look very graceful, but it was progress. We let go of him and he shuffled forward a bit more. Erin smiled her approval.
"Looks like you can move yourself, how does getting you changed sound?" She asked.
"Sure, go ahead." I could tell that he was tiring, but he tried not to show it. He flashed me a smile "I guess we're going home"
"I guess we are, we'll get you dressed first though. We don't want everyone to see your bits hahaha"
"I suppose so" he smirked.
So I proceeded to take his hospital gown off, while Erin fetched his clothes. I scanned my eyes over his slim torso, gasping at what I saw.
Big purple bruises painted his ribs that stuck out horrificly. He had lost a lot of weight since I last saw him. You could count every rib. A trail of deep stitched up cuts spreaded from his torso up to his chest. His back was also littered in blotchy red marks and bruises. Dan noticed me staring.
"They look horrible, don't they?" His voice small, nearly ashamed. His eyes filled to the brim with unshedded tears. "This is all my fault.... I deserve it" His voice cracked and the tears dripped down his cheeks. I immediately wrapped my arms around his topless body, hugging him to me. He tensed up at first but then painfully wrapped his arms around me. I reached up and wiped away his tears.
"Dan, this wasn't your fault. It was that stupid b*tch's fault for using you. You did nothing wrong."
"It's j-j-just so unfair..."
"I know"
Erin returned with Dan's clothes. I motioned for him to lift his arms (which he did very reluctantly) to slip his t-shirt on. I could imagine that his body literally screamed at him in agnony. I proceeded to pull his arms through his jacket sleeves. Erin managed to get the jeans onto his feet, but we ended up having ease them up for him. I stuffed his beanie on his unstyled hair and shoved on his boots for him. We were ready to go home.
"Well, I'll just go and get you some forms to fill in and I'll send you on your way" Erin explained, leaving the room. I turned my attention to Dan, who had sat back down on the bed again, hunched up stiffly. He stared at the floor, blankly. He looked shattered.
"Dan?" He turned his head to gaze at me. "You're gonna be ok, I promise. I won't let anyone hurt ye".
"Ye can't promise thay though. Irma knows where I live. She could easily send that Tim round to give me another beating... And I'd be on my own" Fear glowed in his eyes. He was scared to go home, scared of being left alone.
"Dan you really think I'm just gonna drop you off home and buger off? I'd be a crap friend if I did that" I reassured him. No way was I leaving him on his own. A smile smile spreaded to his face, but then he turned serious again.
"I don't want to cause you any trouble though..."
"Dan, of course you won't! I'm staying over at yours and that's it! Mark and Glen will be round to see you soon, they're dead worried" he chuckled at my reaction and I could tell that he wanted to see his band mates. Erin entered the room with a mountain of forms and a biro.
"Right Danny, if you sign here, here and here for me..." she pointed to three different parts of the form "and here, here and here". Danny took the biro in his shaking hand and signed the forms. "Alright, if you've got no more questions, you're free to go" Erin smiled at us.
"Urmmm, I think we're ok thanks" I answered. I think all Dan wanted to do was sleep.
"Very well, I'll leave you guys to it then" she said, taking the forms and walking towards the door."See ya guys"
"Thank you, see yis " I called after her. I turned back towards Dan, who had started nodding off. I shook his shoulders.
"Dan, c'mon we'll go home now" he jumped, startled, settling his bloodshoted gaze at me. I had never seen him look so rough.
"Yeah s-s-sure. Let's go" with that, he stood up shakily, reaching his arms out towards me for support. I moved so that I was side-ways with him, I pulled him into me and slung his arm around my shoulders, as I had done the other day. I looked up questionably at to see if he was ok. He gave me a nod so shuffled towards the door, down the corridor to reception and finally outside. The coolness of the wind hit us like a slap in the face. Danny hadn't said a word. He was leaning heavily against me. He was tiring yet desperate to stay upright, a determined look on his face.
"Have a rest Dan, the taxi will be here in a bit" I reassured him, sitting him down on a nearby bench and plonking myself down beside him. He immediately shuffled towards me, shivering. He was searching for warmth. Wrapping an arm around him and rubbing his back, I pulled my phone out of my pocket with my free hand. I called a taxi. It would be here in 10 minutes.
Dan now clung onto me, trembling violently. He was freezing. Across the road, I spotted a coffee shop. A cup of coffee would warm him up, I thought.
"Dan I'm gonna go get us some coffee, do ya wanna come with?"
"Ye I'll come, I don't wanna cease up" he whispered hoarsely. Drinking something would do a world of good to his throat too.
The trip across the road was painfully slow. Danny shuffled stifly beside me. The cold was definitely getting to him. We orded two black coffees and went back to sit on the bench, waiting for the taxi, which arrived a few minutes later.
I sat Danny in the car and hopped in beside him, giving the taxi driver the directions to Dan's. For most of the journey, Danny stared into space, ignoring everything and everyone around him. Suddenly he turned paler than usual and began sweating. He turned to face me with a panicked look.
"I feel like I'm gonna be sick" he confessed hoarsely, a hand to his stomach. Then he started gagging like he was going to throw up.
"Sir, could ye stop the car for a sec?" As we were on a motorway, the driver hastily pulled over on the hard shoulder. I dragged Dan out of the car, just as the creamy-yellow liquid shot out of his mouth. I knelt by him for several minutes as he threw up continuously. Eventually, his vomiting subsided and he fell back against me with a loud groan. I guess this was one of the side-effects of his medication. The driver helped me sit him back in the taxi. Giving him an apologetic look, I clambered in beside Dan, wrapping my arm around him to comfort him. He responded by leaning into me, sliding down in his seat to rest his head heavily on my shoulder, closing his eyes. He was fast asleep almost immediately. The driver looked at us worriedly.
"I'm guessing he's been through a lot recently?" He stated, glancing at Danny's broken body that slumped heavily against me.
"Yeah, he was beaten up by his cheating ex's hubby yesterday. Suffered extreme trauma to his head, hence why he's a bit out of it" nodding to his unconscious body.
"Oh I see... Must have taken hell of a beating"
"He certainly did. I was the one to find him.." I could feel the tears brimming in my eyes, recalling Dan's state the other night.God knows what would've happened to him if he hadn't called me for help...
"Oh you poor thing, it really hurts to see your friends in pain..."
I didn't really have a chance to answer him as we pulled up outside Dan's apartment. I gently shook him awake. He turned to look at me, dazed.
"Dan, we're home" I explained. His gaze showed a little understanding and stifly pulled out himself upright. I payed the taxi fair, thanking the driver. We said our goodbyes before I heaved Dan onto his legs and out the car. I searched his pockets for his keys before swiftly unlocking the door, dragging Danny's barely conscious body into his apartment. He layed down on th sofa and within minutes he was asleep.
I sat down on the opposite sofa, texting Evie, Mark, Glen and Dan's family to explain that we were now at Dan's apartment and that I would stay with Dan to watch over him. Without waiting for anyone's reply, I gave into tiredness, letting sleep take over, yet again.
