"It's so nice up here..." Lisa inhaled the cold night breeze and wrapped her hoodie around tighter. When she looks to her side, he's staring into the dark space, smiling by himself.
"Yeah...I like it. It's...quiet,"
"You don't like the city much, do you?" She chuckled.
"Not that...just that...sometimes it's too loud," He looks down to his fingers. He seems nervous, and Lisa can't think why. She's the one who should feel nervous here – he brought her here and there are no one in sight! But for some strange reason, she's not afraid...
"Very unfortunate for you. My friends always say I'm loud like, all the time!" He laughed a little, looking like an adorably shy little boy. "So what's your story? Like, what do you do – are you studying or..."
"I uh...I work,"
"Where?"
"Just...by myself,"
"Like your own business?"
"Something like that,"
"Oh...you look young though – how old are you?"
"23,"
"Same as me!" She squeaked a little and saw he flinched at her high-pitched voice. "Sorry...told you I'm loud,"
"It's okay," He laughed again. Then it's silence again. Lisa plays with her knotted fingers, feeling awkward all of a sudden. He really doesn't talk a lot...or is he still upset that I lied?
"So um...is your family in Seoul too?"
"No..." O...kay...
"Oh, where are they then?"
"Do you ever wonder...like if you could go anywhere in the world...and live happily...where would you go?"
What a random question. "Well...I've always wanted to go to Paris. I heard it's beautiful there,"
He nodded but his expression shows that he's not impressed by her answer. Why? Well, why do you care? It's your answer –
"But I'm not sure if I wanna live there," She blurts out. "Cus I've never been,"
"It is a beautiful city –"
"Oh, you've been there?"
"No, I saw pictures,"
Lisa laughed at his smirk. "What about you? Where would you go?"
He smiles down to the small rocks he's playing with in his hand. "I don't have big dreams...so probably Jeju. Heard it's quiet there..."
"Wow, you really don't like the city! Jeju's so near...it's achievable, I think!"
"You're a city girl, aren't you?"
"I mean...I grew up in the city – so yes!"
"What's good about it?"
"Well...there are a lot of cafes –"
"There are cafes in Jeju too. I'm thinking of opening one if I move there,"
"Um...yeah...but there are no shopping malls,"
"Ahh...of course you need shopping malls,"
Why does it sound like he's judging her?? Is it bad that she likes to shop and hang out like normal girls do?
"It's where everyone hang out –"
"I don't think 'everyone' hangs out at shopping malls,"
Okay, there's no way she can be polite anymore. This guy is just too self-centered and Lisa's not taking it! "Except for you, of course – and why are you judging?"
"I'm not judging –"
"You clearly ARE judging, I can hear it from your tone. You know what, I don't need to answer your stupid, random questions! I don't need to justify anything to you or – or explain why I enjoy the city more than a quiet place like Jeju –" Lisa huffs in annoyance. "Just because you like being by yourself, doesn't mean everyone else should like it too. Some of us enjoy being normal, thank you very much!"
He looked down and sighed a few laugh as Lisa crossed her arms to her chest. This is clearly a mistake! She thought she saw something in him – no, he's just a pretty face with a bad, trying-to-be-all-mysterious attitude!
"That sounds nice..." What? Lisa looks up to him. "Being normal, I mean," He's staring intently towards the open space again...with that genuine-looking smile curved on his perfect-looking lips -
Suddenly he seemed way older than his age. His now small smile can't hide the frown from her eyes. It's like he's bearing a heavy weight and Lisa can't help but wanting...needing to know. Perhaps he came from a less-fortunate background? Is that why he started working at such a young age?
Only now she felt the guilt for lashing out. Why was she so damn defensive over a question? Of course not everyone hang out at shopping malls – she knew that! Not everyone can afford to.
"It's getting cold. I should send you back,"
He got up and offered a hand to her. Lisa stuttered 'okay' before taking it.
...
He should pat himself at the back for handling it so calmly – from the cliff and all the way here to her apartment. Of course his heart was beating fast when she puts her arms across his waist without needing his guidance, but that's probably because she's a girl...and a damn attractive one at that!
He made up his mind – again! – and he's more sure of it now. That session was indeed necessary for him to move on. No matter what brought his mind or feet to her, he now knew how incompatible they are and how different their world is from each other.
He stopped his bike in front of the lobby foyer like she asked to. This is it. This is the last of it. She'll get off and go back to her reality and he'll go back to his. They'll never meet again and she'll remember him as the jerk that judged her on their first date – if you can even count it as a date!
Wait, that wasn't a date? No, you ass – a date is when you dress up nicely and go have fun together –
Wait, why is she not getting off? He thought she took her time taking off the helmet but...what is she doing back there –
Her arms circled around his waist again and Jungkook's heartbeat races wildly. He felt her leaning her face – or her cheek – on his back, and her grip on his body tightened. What – what's going on??
He got her upset...didn't he? Why is she hugging him like he's the most precious thing in the world right now - and why does he like it?!
"I'm sorry..." He can hear her small voice pleading. "I shouldn't have shouted at you...it's just that...it's frustrating trying to understand...and I wanted to answer something that could impress you...but I didn't know how to,"
She...she wanted to impress me? Why??
"It must've been hard...being by yourself here. Trying to make a living. I should've been more sensitive. But I want you to know...that even if I don't know how far you've gone, I can tell that you're doing great. And you'll do well, I know it! Your parents will be proud of you,"
What? What is she talking about –
"I know I was rude earlier but I really hope you won't push me away. I hope we can be friends...everyone need friends and I can be a great one, I promise!"
Jungkook braves himself to reach for her hands that rested nicely on his stomach. They're cold, and he instinctively rubs on the top to warm them up. It feels nice to be taken care and convinced of like this. She's truly a nice and kind-hearted person to care so much on what he thinks. Even if she got the wrong idea –
An old lady walked past and huffs out – probably annoyed at the sight – and Lisa pulls herself and her arms back. Damn it – I didn't want it to end!!
She got off and hands over the helmet to him. Her cheeks looked flushed as she fixed a strand of hair behind her ear, looking down shyly to the ground. The dimmed light got Jungkook mesmerized by her enchanting features...but he quickly snapped out of it when she looks up to him.
"Ride safe....and um...maybe...if you don't mind...can you text me once you reach? I get worried a lot –" She smiles warmly and Jungkook can't help but just nod...like a fool.
