Chapter 38
The Impure King burst out of the Miasma fog and sent an attack straight at both Bon and her, completely engulfing them in the white globs. Kiara shivered. Having the globs around her hand was more than enough but the feeling of them surrounding her was just gross. Though even under all the Miasmashe was able to see Rin draw his sword and flare up.
Kiara smiled as she watched Rin slice the Impure King and his flames encompass the beast. She was almost completely engulfed when a flaming shurkin hit the mass surrounding her a familiar red and blonde haired woman jumped onto the rock and started chanting. Once she was done the entire mass set on fire and both Bon and Kiara were released.
"Shura!" Rin exclaimed.
"Don't worry, I'll take care of him! That monster's too powerful for an ordinary human to handle! You're the only one who can! Remember what you told me, you swore on Shiro's grave you'd be like him and he was right to save your life! So are you ready to prove it?!"
Rin smiled, "Hell yeah!"
"Go get him." Bon said between breaths.
Kiara grinned, now that she didn't have to worry about the Impure King, she would be able to help Rin more. She turned her sword back into a necklace and walked over to him and outstretched her hand. "You're gonna need some help getting to a good spot to attack. I can help you with that."
"How can you help with that. It's way up in the air."
"My dad's the Crow demon." Kiara said, the smoke at her back slowly growing and morphing before two giant wings made of smoke stretched out. She glanced behind her, slightly surprised to see the wings. Holy shit that worked. I would of looked insanely stupid if it didn't. Clearing her throat she turned back to face Rin. "I'm sure I can help you with height problems. Not to mention this way you don't have to risk getting engulfed by the Impure king and having to fight your way out. Time is of the essence here. "
Rin looked at the wings, then as her hand. He nodded and grabbed her hand.
"Alright, flying can't be too hard, can it?" She asked, and Rin looked at her with slight fear in his eyes.
"Wait, do you mean you've never flown before?!"
"Hah. Yep!" And just like that they were off. If she was being honest she kind of thought the wings were just for show. But damn, she can fly. She'd freak out over that later. For now she needed to get Rin closer to the Impure King.
Once they got close she threw Rin at the demon and watched as he sliced at it, but instead of the Impure King taking damage, trendles reached out and tried to grab Rin as he fell towards the ground. Luckily before they got to him he sliced them and they burned up.
Before Rin hit the ground though, Kiara swopped down and caught him lifting him back into the air and away from the trendles.
"This isn't going to be easy." Kiara said, a few seconds later the barrier started to fall.
"The barrier... that could only mean... Suguro!" Rin shouted, looking over his shoulder towards the spot where Bon and Shura were.
Kiara looked over her shoulder as well, seeing that Bon had passed out. She gritted her teeth, "We have to beat this guy down! The barrier's starting to fall, which means the Miasma's going to spread."
"Watch out!" Rin shouted, bringing Kiara's attention to a trendle of the Impure King speeding straight towards them. Just before it could get to them Kiara flew to the side, just barely avoiding the attack. "More incoming!"
Kiara continued to dodge the trendles, Rin slicing the ones that got to close to them. They were placed on the defensive for a few minutes, until a ball of fire appeared beside Kiara out of thin air.
"I can not bare to watch this any longer!" A voice said, coming from he flames and Kiara watched as it spread and changed into the shape of some kind of bird.
"Who're you?" Kiara asked. "A demon?"
"Hm. Demon, angel, Yo-oh. What does it matter? Those are human terms which have no meaning to me. You two on the other hand... what does one call a human wrapped in Devine flames? And another human surrounded by the fog of the abyss? I am Ochukuma. The guardian the purifies the unclean. And the Impure King is an enemy of mine from long ago. The sword you in the Devine flames hold in your hand was once my lord's personal weapon. If you truly wish to defeat the impure king, I can instruct you how to harness the power of the flame and channel it."
"Damn, man, that's a lot of big words. Okay sure, show me how!" Rin said
"Then let us begin." Ochukuma said, dissolving into flames and rushing straight towards Rin's sword, now much smaller and hovering just above the tip of the blade. It turned blue as it mingled with Rin's own flames. "I shall now chant the mantra and sutra. You must repeat them after me."
"Wait, what are we doing?" Rin asked.
"We are about to call fourth the Kasho Zhanmai. The Kasho Zhanmai will incinerate everything in this world. With the addition of the demonic flame, it shall purify the Impure King, along with every living thing on this mountain."
"Wait, purify?? Rin asked, "Like burn the whole mountain? Dude there's a lot of people up here!"
"What of it? They are of no importance. Those who set foot in the Impure King's castle or were touched by his minions have all been contaminated. They must all be cleansed without exception. For the Impure King can regenerate from even the tiniest speck. Come." Ochukuma said, moving the sword forwards and in turn causing Kiara to move forwards as well since she was still holding Rin.
"Hold on!" Rin said.
"Rin." Kiara said. "We have to do it."
"What? What about everyone on the mountain!? Are you okay with them being incinerated?"
"Of course not! But... if that's what it takes to save the greater amount of the world... we have to do it. Besides, there's no time to think about it. We have to destroy the Impure King before it destroys us."
"We can no longer afford to dawdle. Begin!" Ochukuma and Rin started chanting, and brilliant blue flames gathered around it. Kiara took this as a cue to send Rin flying towards the Impure King, and the moment he was out of her hands she watched from her spot in mid air as Rin landed the attack on the Impure King, causing the demon to be incinerated in blue flames.
From where she was, she felt Rin's fear start to die down, but she didn't have much time to think before a wave of blue flames washed over her. But it didn't burn like she expected it to. No, it was just warm. A tiredness started to settle over her and she slowly got closer to the ground, landing not too far from where Shura and Bon were. Her form turned back to normal as she relaxed, her tail hanging behind her limply.
She took a deep breath and looked around, seeing the morning sun bathing the now Impure King free mountain. In front of her Rin sheathed his sword.
"Okumura." Bon said from behind her, and she turned to see him walking up to Rin.
"Suguro, Shura. I... I did it. I controlled my flames. I still gotta fine tune a few things, but I can decide what get burnt and what doesn't now!" He looked at his sword with a grin.
"Hey, Okumura, Bon, Hoshino!" A voice shouted and the group looked over towards the source to see Konekomaru running up to them. Along with a lot of the other exorcists.
"Koneko. Shima, you're okay." Bon said.
"Konekomaru! Dude, you won't believe it, I can control my power! I made my flames burn the Impure King all up and nothing else!"
"Well that explains it." Shima said. "Man, it was super weird when your flames hit us. We were covered in 'em but we didn't feel nothing. Didn't even tingle."
"Those blue flames of yours cleansed everything they touched. Everything that was afflicted by the miasma. Even me. Thank you for saving everyone. Your powers are truly amazing."
"Awe shucks." Rin laughed as he placed a hand on the back of his head. "Keep talking like that and I'm gonna start blushing."
"And Hoshino, I didn't know you could fly! We saw you in the air carrying Rin as you two avoided the Impure King's attacks. Wicked cool, man!"
"Right! Funny thing actually, I didn't know I could fly until I did!"
"Wait, you mean you offered to fly Rin up without knowing that you could?!" Bon shouted.
"Hell yeah I did!" Kiara exclaimed.
"Don't act so nonchalant about that!" Bon shouted.
Kiara just laughed, until she heard some sniffling and looked to see Konekomaru starting to cry.
"Oh Okumura. I was wrong. Thank you, please forgive me." He said, bowing his head.
"Woah! W-why're you crying!" Rin exclaimed. "Did I scare ya again?"
"Nah dude. He keeps his feelings bottled up inside then let's them rip. The usual- ah!" He let out a shout when he turned and looked at Bon. "Holy Hell, how'd you make it out alive?! I already got used to you being gone. You know I'm kiddin."
"Sorry if I made you worry." Bon said.
Shima chuckled. "Worry about you, never."
"Rin!" A voice shouted, and Kiara turned to see Yukio walking out from the edge of the forest, an absolutely enraged expression on his face.
"Oh, shits gonna go down." Kiara said.
"Oh, hey Yukio! I was wondering where you were!" Rin said.
"Shura." Yukio growled. "What is my brother doing here? Who let him out of his cell?"
"Remember my apology from before? That's for this." Shura answered.
"See, Yukio! I saved everybody here like a frikkin' boss! Bet your head's spinnin' now, ain't it?" Rin laughed. "Soon I'll leave you behind. Eatin' my dust."
Kiara watched as Yukio walked up to Rin and flat out punched him in the face. "Wow. Such brotherly love." She stated, hearing Shima's muffled laughed from beside her.
"You idiot! Do you understand the mess you're in?"
"Yeah, I understand." Rin answered. "Don't you worry. I get it, sure I'm the spawn of Satan, I can't escape that or my power. I've always been afraid of it. Facing it, accepting it. But now... now I understand how wrong I was." He unsheathed his sword and erupted into flames. "Take a good look. This is me, Yukio. This is who I am." His flames flickered and he gritted his teeth, groaning in pain. "If I'm not... cool with myself... I'm not gonna get anywhere. Yukio... we're brothers. I need you to be cool..." His flames extinguished and he fell forwards.
"Rin!"
"Okumura!" Bon shouted.
"He'll be fine." Kiara said, walking up to him. "He just overexerted himself." Kiara said, kneeling beside him. "Speaking of overexertion, I think Imma pass out too. See ya." She gave them a peace sign before falling to the ground, the world turning black around her.
They had fought, and they had won. They deserved a nice rest.
