Valentine's Day Blues

"Good Morning Flower!" Ruby bursted into her room, giggling. She let Flower sleep in, since she woke up with a mild headache earlier on, and asked if she could rest up for a bit more. Ruby agreed, letting her get the rest she deserved.

"Cmon sleepyhead! We made waffles! A Valentine's Day treat, from me!" She giggled out.

Silence.

Ruby pouted a bit, walking up besides the bed.

"Flower? Hellooo?" She waved a bit. No response.

She bit her lip nervously, before looking down.

"Sorry Flower..." she whispered. She grabbed the blanket, and with one pull, she lifted it up into the air. She looked down, grinning happily to make her girlfriend's morning a bit better than it was.

"Wakey Wakey, Eggs and-"

"FLOWER!"

-

"Pin! How are you feeling?" Fries stood up from his garden as he saw Pin approaching him. She waved a bit.

"Ah, I'm feeling so much better than before, though my eye is bothering me, heh..." she patted the bandage that was still wrapped around her eye.

" Thanks for the concern Fries."

Fries smiled warmly towards her, as he stood up, and brushed the dirt off of his knees. He put the trowel in his hands down, as he walked closer to her.

"I still can't believe that the Freesmarter's would do something like that.." he muttered. Pin snickered.

"Honestly, I never knew that they had that kind of attitude in them."

Fries rolled his eyes, as he picked up a small rag and wiped his hands clean from the dirt that stained them. She watched him quietly, leaning on the small garden fence that Fries built.

"You should've seen Coiny; he was crying non-stop one moment, and pouting angrily the next. He was freaked out, but after we thought you were gone for good, he acted like a kid." He chuckled a bit, shaking his head. Pin laughed a bit, as she watched Fries pick up a small pitcher with water, and began to water the growtatoes. Her eyes sparkled in amazement.

"Fries! They're growing!" She grinned.

"Does that mean-"

"No, not yet Pin." He raised his eyebrow.

"These are for me, and then, the rest is for all of you. I have to keep an eye out for Gelatin, because knowing him.." he grunted. Pin nodded, already understanding what he meant.
Gelatin was very sneaky when it came to stuff like this, but besides that, he was very witty and a bit gullible, especially when Firey was around.

Oh well, she has to figure out what she could do with him later.

She watched as Fries took care of the small plants, before she heard footsteps coming from behind. She turned around, and smiled when she saw Coiny walking up to her, grinning mischievously. She raised an eyebrow, as she walked on over to him.

"What's with the smile?" She questioned. Coiny laughed a bit, before leaning close to Pin.

"Well, I did Golf Ball a favor and...well..." he grinned. Pin couldn't help but smile, as she began to hint towards what he did.

"I may or may not have forged a note to TB about her feelings-"

"You WHAT?!" She screamed out. Coiny quickly covered her mouth, snickering. She put a hand over his, and began to laugh a bit, muffling a few words that escaped her lips. She removed his hand, and looked up at him.

"Golf Ball is going to end you, you know that right?" She wrapped her fingers around his hand, interlocking their fingers together. He looked down at his hand, before looking back at her, smiling.

"Well, before I'm killed by a small ball who didn't even know what a kiss was, why don't you give your Co-Captain a kiss?" He winked. Pin's cheeks bloomed a deep red, as she rolled her eyes playfully.

"Fine, fine..." she whispered. She leaned in, and gave him a small peck on his lips. Coiny wrapped his arms around her waist, as he smiled, kissing her more passionately. Pin let out a muffled giggle, as she turned her face away from his.

"Coiny, that tickles!" She laughed out. Coiny smiled, as he held her in his arms. Pin sighed happily, letting her head rest on his shoulder.

"Also, Happy Valentines Day Captain~" He winked. Pin's eye widened as she shot up, confusion filling her mind.

"SINCE WHEN WAS IT VALENTINES DAY?!" She yelled out, her voice echoing through the city. Coiny flinched a bit, before putting his hand on her arm, calming her.

"Hey, hey, it's okay. You were out for a while..." he smiled. Pin grunted as she fell into his arms, hugging him.

"I'm so sorry Coiny, I didn't...I-"

"Don't." He smiled, holding her hand in his.

"It's okay, I promise."

Pin sighed sadly. Of course, on a day that was supposed to celebrate romance and relationships; she forgot.

She stayed his arms, before quick footsteps were heard in the distance. The two looked up, and noticed a small figure running towards them, telling angrily.

"COINY!! I'M GOING TO KILL YOU!"

Pin snickered.

"Yikes; is she really that mad?"

She looked towards her side, and noticed that Coiny was already scuttling away, laughing. Golf Ball quickly caught his eye, before she rammed herself against him. The collision sent the two flying onto the ground, as Golf Ball quickly stood up and put her foot on Coiny's stomach, keeping him down. He didn't mind; his laughs echoed through the streets as Golf Ball glared at him.

"WHY DID YOU DO THAT?!" Golf Ball screeched. Her cheeks were as red as a rose bush, as she pressed her foot harder against his stomach.

"WHY DID YOU WRITE THAT?!"

Coiny wiped his eyes, before looking at her, trying to contain his laughter.

"I TOLd You that the cure to what you have is TENNIS BALL! But, if you want to stay sick, then just..." he shrugged. Golf Ball pressed her foot down, and he winced a bit. Her eyes were blazing with rage as she stared down at him, her cheeks becoming more redder and redder.

"Oh, come on Golf Ball." Pin commented, as she came up to the two.

"I'm sure TB likes you that way-"

"I don't have TIME for this Pin!" She growled, as she lifted her foot off of Coiny. He took a deep breath in, as he sat up, putting an arm around his stomach. Golf Ball stood beside him, angrily.

"I just-" she paused.

"I don't know- I think..I-" she tried to think of the words, but her mind was blank. As she let out a heavy sigh, she looked up.

"You know what? I can't think about this right now."

Can't think about it? Pin looked down at Coiny, before looking back at Golf Ball, confusion in her eyes.

"What do you mean?" She crossed her arms. Golf Ball looked back up at her, her eyes gleaming with exhaustion and stress.

"Oh, haven't you heard?" Golf Ball dusted herself off.

"Flower is ill. Extremely ill, to the point she can't even move. She is confined to bed rest until I find out what happened to her, and maybe, how I can help cure her." She rolled her eyes.

"Ruby isn't helping; she's freaking out, to a point where I just want to lock her OUT of the room." She lamented.

This made Pin's heart drop, and spill all over the pavement below her feet. The petals. The lilies.
Her plan.

She put on a worried expression, as she looked down at Coiny. Coiny had the same expression, before he looked back at Golf Ball.

"Is she...gonna be okay?" His voice was soft, concern filling his tone. Golf Ball rubbed her temples, before looking up.

"I'm pretty sure she'll be okay; maybe it's some sort of severe stomach virus? Or a flu..."

"What are her symptoms?"

The three turned to face Fries, who overheard the conversation and decided to come and join in. He crossed his arms, as Golf Ball closed her eyes in thought.

"She's showing the common symptoms of the flu..vomiting, a very high fever...but what's strange is that her heartbeat is abnormal..." she opened her eyes.

"She's been complaining about a migraine, and she freaks out at moments, saying that some objects are different colors..."

"Color disturbances, huh?" Fries muttered. Golf Ball nodded.

"And whats weird, is that she's extremely unresponsive..." She began to ramble to the three.

"I've run multiple tests, but every time I've tried to get a response, she just...doesn't."

"What did she eat." Fries voice was stern, as he was trying to analyze the symptoms that Flower had. Golf Ball thought for a moment.

"Well, from what I remember...she ate the sandwiches and tea we gave her. But, I don't remember what else, since Ruby told me this afternoon that she wasn't feeling well..."

Fries shook his head, as he looked back towards Coiny and Pin.

"We have to go see her."

"Why?" Coiny tilted his head, confused as to why they would go see someone as snarky as Flower. Pin nudged him, quickly shutting him up.

"I think I know what's wrong, but I have to see her first, and know what she ate." He looked back at Golf Ball.

"Where is she?"

"She's back in the clubhouse; I couldn't bring her back to the lab, she couldn't even WALK." She sighed in frustration. Fries grabbed Coiny and Pin's arms, and began to walk ahead.

"Well, what are we waiting for? Let's go."

The wrenching sounds of vomiting echoed through the house as Pencil opened the door, concern written all over her face. Flower clutched the small bucket that she had wrapped in her arms, as she continue to heave up nothing but bile, and a few off-colored liquids. Ruby sat beside her, her arms shaking as her eyes were shining with tears. She noticed Pencil, and looked towards her, struggling to keep her tears inside of her eyes.

"T-This is the seventh time." She muttered, her voice trembling from fear. Pencil glanced over at the small clock that hung on the wall.

"She threw up seven times...in the span of fifteen minutes." Pencil turned back towards Ruby, disbelief rising in her tone. Ruby nodded, her face turning a bit pale after hearing the terrible sounds escape from her girlfriend. But...

The sounds had stopped.

Flower held out the bucket, her arms trembling wildly. Pencil quickly took the bucket, and looked away in disgust.

"I'll...take this out. Don't worry about it." She offered, and Ruby nodded, quickly grabbing the small, pink handkerchief from her bedstead and carefully wiping Flower's mouth from the drool that was going down her chin. Her eyes immediately filled with tears as she looked down at her girlfriend.

Her face was cadaverous; beads of sweat were clearly visual, and her petals were all tattered and wrinkled; pale, and very, very dry. Ruby wiped her eyes, and put down the handkerchief. She looked back, and gently took Flower's hand, caressing it gently.

Flower's eyes were closed, yet her breathing was heavy, and awfully raspy. The pain was unbearable; she couldn't handle any more of it. She felt something soft brushing up and down her hands, and as she slowly opened her eye, it revealed to be Ruby. A weak smile grew on Flower's face, as Ruby looked at her.

She didn't smile back. Instead, tears began to pour down her cheeks, as the gem began to feel sobs bubbling up in her throat. She carefully put her hand on Flower's cheek, and let the soft touch of her hand console Flower. She cleared her throat.

"S-So..." Her voice was quiet. Flower continued to let out wheezes of pain, but she left her eye open, letting Ruby know that she was listening.

"D-..." Ruby paused.

"Do you need anything...?"

Flower looked at her, and after letting out a soft sigh, she slowly shook her head no. Ruby nodded, as she looked down, letting more tears roll down her glimmering cheeks.

"I..I'm sorry I wasn't a good girlfriend to you..." She whimpered out. Flower's eyes widened a bit, as she continued to listen.

"I'm sorry I was so fearful, I should've been the one watching over you and taking care of you, I should've been more mature, I shouldn't have acted like an idiot, I-"

"Ruby." A hoarse voice croaked out, making Ruby jump a bit. She looked down, and realized that it was Flower who spoke. Her voice..

"Don't...you dare..." She wheezed.

"Say that..."

She closed her eyes, and slowly took a deep breath in, trying to collect her jumbled thoughts from her numbed mind. Ruby held her hand, letting her fingers close around hers. They sat in silence, the wheezing being the only thing that wouldn't break it.

The others? Well...they were outside. Occasionally, they would all check in, but they would leave, feeling the worry eat at them more than before.

But a sudden knock at the door made the two jump. Ruby looked down at Flower, and Flower slowly nodded, giving her approval to let whoever was on the other side of the door, in. Ruby slowly got down from the bed, and trudged over to the door, opening it slowly.

"Ruby?"

The small gem looked through the crack of the door, and saw the small scientist standing there, with three more objects behind her. Ruby opened the door, and saw that it was Fries, Pin and Coiny.

"Oh.." She quickly stepped aside, as the four walked in, their eyes immediately going towards Flower's direction. Flower's eyes greeted them back, as she let out a sigh. Golf Ball turned towards Ruby.

"How long has t been since she puked." She asked lowly.

"About...five minutes.." Ruby whispered.

Fries went up towards her, and looked down at Flower. Flower gulped a bit, as she noticed him standing over her, inspecting her face. Her vision suddenly tilted, as her eyes began to go downwards. She mumbled in confusion, before coughing a bit.

"Flower?" Fries's voice made everyone in the room turn towards him. Flower struggled to make eye contact with him, her eyes drooping down and going dark. She mumbled, as her entire body began to tremble.

"G-Golf Ball?" Fries stepped back a bit. Golf Ball quickly ran over, and quickly began to listen to her heart using her a stethoscope. Her face fell, as she looked down at Flower.

"Abnormal heartbeat..." She whispered.

"I..Its so slow..."

Ruby shook her head, as she quickly climbed into the bed beside Flower, tears stinging in her eyes.

"Flower..? F-Flower, please..." her voice began to fade away, as she grabbed Flower's hand and held it close to her.

"Please, don't...don't die, please..." She cried out. Her fingers closed around her hand, as she began to sob. She repeated those words, as she held her hand close to her chest, refusing to let it go. Flower's body began to twitch even more, as blood began to trickle out of her mouth.

"WHAT'S WRONG WITH HER?!" Pin cried out, stepping back from shock.

act.

Ruby began to shake her head even more, sobbing.

"FLOWER, STOP IT! STOP!!" Tears began to splash down onto the sheets, as Flower continued to violently jolt and twitch, her eyes beginning to roll into the back of her head. She let out choked wheezes and painful coughs, as everything around her began to fade away. This lasted for a good minute, before Flower finally collapsed onto the bed, breathing heavily. Ruby looked down at her, shock and fear glimmering in her eyes.

By this point, everyone had come in to see what was happening. The freesmarters, coiny, pin...

Everyone.

"R-..Ruby..." Flower let her fingers interlock around Ruby's hand, as she gave it a gentle squeeze. Ruby shook her head, as she scooped up Flower with her free arm, holding her close. Flower let a small smile grow on her face, as she looked at Ruby. Her free hand slowly went up, and wiped a tear from Ruby's cheek, shaking.

"H..Have you ever...met someone...who.." She coughed a bit.

"Changed...your life...for the better.."

Ruby nodded, and let a smile grow on her face.

"Y-Yes, yes, I have, love! I met you! Y-You made my life so much better!" Her voice was trembling, as she looked down at her girlfriend.

"W-Well.." Flower winced a bit, a sudden wave of pain hitting her. Ruby panicked.

"F-FLOWER?!"

Flower let out a small whimper, as she began to shake her head, tears beginning to roll down her cheeks.

"R-Ruby, please-" she rasped out.

"I-...I don't want to die..." She looked up at her, her eyes widened and bloodshot, yet filled with pain and fear.

"I-I'm so scared..."

Ruby held back a sob, as she hugged her close, holding her hand tightly.

"D-Don't say that love..." She sniffed, rocking her gently.

"I-I'm here with you..."

She continued to rock her, not even noticing that she was starting to hum, and soon, sing.

"I-...If I could..begin to be...half of what, you think of me..." She looked down at her lovingly, feeling her heart pound with sadness.

"I could do about anything..."

"I...Could even learn....how to love..." Flower whimpered out, slowly finding her pitch. She looked up at Ruby, tears rolling down her flushed cheeks, yet, a sad smile was growing on her face.

"W-When I see..the way you act..." Her throat began to close up, as she felt Flower wince harshly once more.

"Wondering w-..when..I'm coming back...." Her grip on Ruby's hand began to loosen, as Flower let out a choked whimper.

"I-I could..do about anything..." Ruby closed her eyes, rocking Flower ever so gently.

"I-I could....even...l..." Flower's voice began to fade away.

"learn...h..how....to love..." She took a shaky breath in, the room around her suddenly glowing white.

"t-..to...love..."

Silence suddenly filled the room, as Flower let her final breath escape her lips. Her hand slipped out of Ruby's grip, as her body went limp in Ruby's arms. Ruby stared down at her girlfriend, her eyes widened in shock. A stream of tears began to pour down her face, as she began to tremble. She looked up.

"L...Like...You...."

A loud sob suddenly escaped her lips, as she scooped up the limp corpse of her girlfriend, and sobbed into her soft, delicate petals, her world around her, crumbling into pieces.
